The $γ$ ray emission originating from in-flight annihilation (IA) of positrons is a powerful observable for constraining high-energy positron production from exotic sources. By comparing diffuse $γ$ ray observations of INTEGRAL, COMPTEL and EGRET to theoretical predictions, we set the most stringent constraints on electrophilic feebly interacting particles (FIPs), thereby proving IA as a valuable probe of new physics. In particular, we extensively discuss the case of MeV-scale sterile neutrinos, where IA sets the most stringent constraints, excluding $|U_{\mu4}|^{2} \gtrsim 10^{-13}$ and $|U_{\tau4}|^{2} \gtrsim 2\times 10^{-13}$ for sterile neutrinos mixed with $μ$ and $τ$ neutrinos respectively. These constraints improve existing limits by more than an order of magnitude. We briefly discuss the application of these results to a host of exotic positron sources such as dark photons, axion-like particles, primordial black holes (PBHs) and sub-GeV dark matter (DM).

In this paper, we explore the effects of General Relativity modification on the Mass-Radius relations of Neutron Stars induced by the presence of the Quintessence field. We consider, in particular, the Kiselev model, according to which the Quintessence field, being present in the entire Universe, might also be present around massive objects. Considering the Equation of State (EoS) for Baryonic matter BSk22 derived by A. Y. Potekhin et al., we infer the upper limit for NS masses in the presence of Quintessence. The presence of Quintessence generates a peculiar effect for which the Mass-Radius relation is unvaried and therefore the presence of Quintessence is indistinguishable from ordinary matter, at least for the Kiselev model studied in this paper.

In this paper, we investigate Schwarzschild-like black holes within the framework of metric-affine bumblebee gravity. We explore the implications of such a gravitational setup on various astrophysical phenomena, including the presence of an accretion disk, the deflection angle of light rays, the establishment of greybody bounds, and the propagation of neutrinos. The metric-affine bumblebee gravity theory offers a unique perspective on gravitational interactions by introducing a vector field that couples to spacetime curvature. We analyze the behavior of accretion disks around Schwarzschild-like black holes in this modified gravity scenario, considering the effects of the bumblebee field on the accretion process. Furthermore, we scrutinize the deflection angle of light rays as they traverse the gravitational field, highlighting potential deviations from standard predictions due to the underlying metric-affine structure. Investigating greybody bounds in this context sheds light on the thermal radiation emitted by black holes and how the modified gravity framework influences this phenomenon. Moreover, we explore neutrino propagation around Schwarzschild-like black holes within metric-affine bumblebee gravity, examining alterations in neutrino trajectories and interactions compared to conventional general relativity. By comprehensively probing these aspects, we aim to unravel the distinctive features and consequences of Schwarzschild-like black holes in the context of metric-affine bumblebee gravity, offering new insights into the nature of gravitational interactions and their observable signatures.

A stochastic process that is consistent with a GWB has been recently reported by the independent analyses of pulsar timing array (PTA) data sets collected over a decadal timescale by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav), the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA), the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA), and the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array (CPTA) collaborations. We investigate the modifications in the neutrino flavor oscillations under the influence of the GWB reported by the PTA collaborations and we discuss how such effects could be potentially revealed in near-future neutrino detectors, possibly helping the discrimination of different models for the GWB below the nHz frequency range.

The study of neutrino pair annihilation into electron-positron pairs ($ν{\bar ν}\to e^-e^+$) is astrophysically well-motivated because it is a possible powering mechanism for the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, we estimate the gamma-ray energy deposition rate (EDR) arising from the annihilation of the neutrino pairs in the equatorial plane of a slowly rotating black hole geometry modified by the broken Lorentz symmetry (induced by a background bumblebee vector field). More specifically, owing to the presence of a dimensionless Lorentz symmetry breaking (LSB) parameter $l$ arising from nonminimal coupling between the bumblebee field with nonzero vacuum expectation value and gravity, the metric solution in question differs from the standard slowly rotating Kerr black hole. By idealizing the thin accretion disk temperature profile in the two forms of isothermal and gradient around the bumblebee gravity-based slow rotating black hole, we investigate the influence of spontaneous LSB on the $ν{\bar ν}$-annihilation efficiency. For both profiles, we find that positive values of LSB parameter $l>0$ induce an enhancement of the EDR associated with the neutrino-antineutrino annihilation. Therefore, the process of powering the GRBs jets around bumblebee gravity modified slowly rotating geometry is more efficient in comparison with standard metric. Using the observed gamma-ray luminosity associated with different GRBs types (short, long, and ultra-long), we find, through the analysis of the EDR in the parameter space $l-a$ ($a^2\ll1$), some allowed ranges for the LSB parameter $l$.

We investigate the modifications in the neutrino flavor oscillations under the influence of a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB), in a scenario in which General Relativity is modified by an additional Chern-Simons (CS) term. Assuming that the dark matter halo is in the form of axions, the CS coupling modifies the pattern of the neutrino flavor oscillations at Earth up to a total suppression in some frequency range. At the same time, the SGWB in the halo could stimulate the axion decay into gravitons over a narrow frequency range, leading to a potentially detectable resonance peak in the enhanced SGWB strain. A consistent picture would require these features to potentially show up in neutrino detection from supernovae, gravitational wave detectors, and experiments aimed at the search for axions in the Milky Way halo.

Black holes can accumulate a large amount of energy, responsible for highly energetic astrophysical phenomena
Recently, fast magnetic reconnection (MR) of the magnetic field was proposed as a new way to extract energy and in this paper, we investigate this phenomena in a bumblebee Kerr-Sen BH. We find that the presence of the charge parameter strongly changes the simple Kerr case, making this extraction mechanism possible even for not extremely rotating black holes ($a \sim 0.7$). We also show that, under appropriate circumstances, MR is more efficient compared to the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We finally compare these results with quintessence black-hole solutions not finding and enhancement respect to Kerr solution.

The detection of very high-energy neutrinos by IceCube experiment supports the existence of a comparable gamma-ray counterpart from the same cosmic accelerators. Under the likely assumption that the sources of these particles are of extragalactic origin, the emitted photon flux would be significantly absorbed during its propagation over cosmic distances. However, in the presence of photon mixing with ultra-light axion-like-particles (ALPs), this expectation would be strongly modified. Notably, photon-ALP conversions in the host galaxy would produce an ALP flux which propagates unimpeded in the extragalactic space. Then, the back-conversion of ALPs in the Galactic magnetic field leads to a diffuse high-energy photon flux. In this context, the recent detection of the diffuse high-energy photon flux by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) allows us to exclude at the $95\%$ CL an ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγ}\gtrsim 3.9-7.8 \times 10^{-11}~\mathrm{GeV^{-1}}$ for $m_{a}\lesssim 4\times10^{-7}~\mathrm{eV}$, depending on the assumptions on the magnetic fields and on the original gamma-ray spectrum. This new bound is complementary with other ALP constraints from very-high-energy gamma-ray experiments and sensitivities of future experiments.

We revise the supernova (SN) axion emission induced by the nucleon EDM coupling and refine accordingly the SN 1987A bound. Furthermore, we calculate the axion flux from a future Galactic SN and show that it might produce a peculiar and potentially detectable gamma-ray signal in a large underground neutrino detector such as the proposed Hyper-Kamiokande. The possibility to detect such a signal offers a way to search for an oscillating nucleon EDM complementary to CASPERe, without relying on the assumption that axions are a sizeable component of the dark matter. Furthermore, if axions from SN produce an observable signal, they could also lead to an amount of cosmological extra-radiation observable in future cosmic surveys.

Furthermore, both sterile neutrinos and dark photons may decay into positrons on their route to Earth. Such positrons would annihilate with electrons in the Galactic medium and contribute to the photon flux in the 511 keV line. Using the SPI (SPectrometer on INTEGRAL) observation of this line improves the bounds on the mixing parameters for these particles by several orders of magnitude below what is already excluded by the SN 1987A energy-loss argument.

In this paper, we study the spin transitions of neutrinos caused by the interaction with a gravitational field. We consider a model with a scalar field (describing screening effects) conformally coupled to matter and neutrinos. The presence of screening effects suppresses the neutrino spin-flip probability as compared with General Relativity predictions. Such a result could be used, combined with neutrino astronomy, for testing modified theories of gravity and, in turn, screening effects invoked to bypass the solar system and Lab tests. Such an analysis has been also extended to the case of the quintessence field surrounding a black hole. Here we investigate the flavor and spin transitions, showing that also in such a case exists a suppression of the effect compared to General Relativity prediction.

If these neutrinos decay after the active neutrino decoupling, they generate extra neutrino radiation, but also contribute to entropy production. Thus, they alter the value of the effective number of neutrino species $N_{\rm eff}$ as for instance measured by the cosmic microwave background (CMB), as well as affect primordial nucleosynthesis (BBN), notably ${}^4$He production. We provide a detailed account of the solution of the relevant Boltzmann equations. We also identify the parameter space allowed by current Planck satellite data and forecast the parameter space probed by future Stage-4 ground-based CMB observations, expected to match or surpass BBN sensitivity.

The effect of the latter is to increase the minimum photon-sphere radius ($R_{ph}$), increasing in such a way the maximum energy deposition rate near to $R_{ph}$. The rate turns out to be several orders of magnitude greater than the rate computed in the framework of General Relativity. In Cosmology and in Fundamental Physics there is a crucial question like: where the elusive substance that we call Dark Matter is hidden in the Universe and what is it made of?, that, even after 40 years from the Vera Rubin seminal discovery does not have a proper answer. Actually, the more we have investigated, the more this issue has become strongly entangled with aspects that go beyond the established Quantum Physics, the Standard Model of Elementary particles and the General Relativity and related to processes like the Inflation, the accelerated expansion of the Universe and High Energy Phenomena around compact objects. Even Quantum Gravity and very exotic DM particle candidates may play a role in framing the Dark Matter mystery that seems to be accomplice of new unknown Physics. Observations and experiments have clearly indicated that the above phenomenon cannot be considered as already theoretically framed, as hoped for decades. The Special Topic to which this review belongs wants to penetrate this newly realized mystery from different angles, including that of a contamination of different fields of Physics apparently unrelated. We show with the works of this ST that this contamination is able to guide us into the required new Physics. This review wants to provide a good number of these "paths or contamination" beyond/among the three worlds above; in most of the cases, the results presented here open a direct link with the multi-scale dark matter phenomenon, enlightening some of its important aspects. Also in the remaining cases, possible interesting contacts emerges.

For a mixing with tau flavour, this bound is much stronger than the ones from laboratory searches. Moreover, we show that in the viable parameter space the decay of such "heavy" sterile neutrinos in the SN envelope would lead to a very energetic flux of daughter active neutrinos; if not too far below current limits, this would be detectable in large underground neutrino observatories, like Super-Kamiokande, as a (slightly time-delayed) high-energy bump in the spectrum of a forthcoming Galactic SN event.
