We investigate the physical properties of accretion flows around Konoplya-Zhidenko (KZ) black hole, proposed by deforming Kerr spacetime to address the inaccuracies in the observation of gravitational waves resulting from a binary black hole merger. The dynamical equations describing the general relativistic viscous accreting flow are solved self-consistently to find the transonic accretion solutions in terms of global constants, such as energy ($E$), angular momentum ($\mathcal{L}$), viscosity parameter ($α$), spin ($a_{k}$), and deformation parameter ($η_0$). We obtain five distinct types of accretion solutions (O, A, $\text{A}^{\prime}$, W, and I-types) and observe that those solutions are not unique but rather continue to exist for wide range of parameter spaces in the $\mathcal{L}-E$ plane. Furthermore, we find that the viscous accretion flows can harbor shock waves when relativistic shock conditions are satisfied. Consequently, the shock-induced global accretion solutions are obtained and the effect of $η_0$ on shock properties, such as shock radius ($r_{\rm sh}$) and change in electron temperature ($T_{\rm e}$) across the shock front are investigated. Moreover, we calculate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of accretion flow using the relativistic thermal bremsstrahlung emission coefficient and study the modification of SEDs due to the increase of $η_0$ for both shock-induced and shock-free solutions. In addition, it has been noticed that the observable quantities, like quasi-periodic oscillation frequency ($ν_{\rm QPO}$) and bolometric disc luminosity ($L$), are strongly depend on $η_0$. Finally, we phenomenologically show that the KZ black hole is consistent with the observed high-frequency QPOs, commonly observed in black hole binaries and black hole candidates.

In this paper, we study the properties of accretion flow including its spectral features in Johannsen and Psaltis (JP) non-Kerr spacetime. In doing so, we numerically solve the governing equations that describe the flow motion around the compact objects in a general relativistic framework, where spin ($a_{k}$) and deformation parameters ($\varepsilon$) demonstrate the nature of the central source, namely black hole (BH) or naked singularity (NS). With this, we obtain all possible classes of global accretion solutions ($i. e.$, O, A, W and I-type) by varying the energy ($E$) and angular momentum ($λ$) of the relativistic accretion flow, and examine the role of thermal bremsstrahlung emission in studying the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the accretion disc. We divide the parameter space in $λ-E$ plane in terms of the different classes of accretion solutions for BH and NS models. We further calculate the disc luminosity ($L$) corresponding to these accretion solutions, and observe that I-type solutions yield higher $L$ and SEDs than the remaining types of solutions for both BH and NS models. For BH model, SEDs for W and I-type solutions differ significantly from the results for O and A-type solutions for low $E$ values. On the contrary, for NS model, SEDs for different accretion solutions are identical in the whole parameter space of $λ$ and $E$. We also examine the effect of $\varepsilon$ on the SEDs and observe that a non-Kerr BH yields higher SEDs than the usual Kerr BH. Finally, for accretion solutions of identical $E$ and $λ$, we compare the SEDs obtained from BH and NS models, and find that naked singularity objects produce more luminous power spectra than the black holes.

We study the properties of a low-angular momentum, inviscid, advective accretion flow in a deformed Kerr spacetime under the framework of general theory of relativity. We solve the governing equations that describe the flow motion in terms of input parameters, namely energy ($E$), angular momentum ($λ$), spin ($a_{\rm k}$) and deformation parameter ($\varepsilon$), respectively. We find that global transonic accretion solutions continue to exist in non-Kerr spacetime. Depending on the input parameters, accretion flow is seen to experience shock transition and we find that shocked induced accretion solutions are available for a wide range of the parameter space in $λ-E$ plane. We examine the modification of the shock parameter space with $\varepsilon$, and find that as $\varepsilon$ is increased, the effective region of the parameter space is reduced, and gradually shifted towards the higher $λ$ and lower $E$ domain. In addition, for the first time in the literature, we notice that accretion flow having zero angular momentum admits shock transition when spacetime deformation is significantly large. Interestingly, beyond a critical limit of $\varepsilon^{\rm max}$, the nature of the central object alters from black hole (BH) to naked singularity (NS) and we identify $\varepsilon^{\rm max}$ as function of $a_{\rm k}$. Further, we examine the accretion solutions and its properties around the naked singularity as well. Finally, we indicate the implications of the present formalism in the context of astrophysical applications.

Thanu Padmanabhan was a renowned Indian theoretical physicist known for his research in general relativity, cosmology, and quantum gravity. In an extraordinary career spanning forty-two years, he published more than three hundred research articles, wrote ten highly successful technical and popular books, and mentored nearly thirty graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He is best known for his deep work investigating gravitation as an emergent thermodynamic phenomenon. He was an outstanding teacher, and an indefatigable populariser of science, who travelled very widely to motivate and inspire young students. Paddy, as he was affectionately known, was also a close friend to his students and collaborators, treating them as part of his extended academic family. On September 17, 2021 Paddy passed away very unexpectedly, at the age of sixty-four and at the height of his research career, while serving as a Distinguished Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. His untimely demise has come as a shock to his family and friends and colleagues. In this article, several of them have come together to pay their tributes and share their fond memories of Paddy.

The ongoing conjecture that the presence of horizon may induce chaos in an integrable system, is further investigated from the perspective of a uniformly accelerated frame. Particularly, we build up a model which consists of a particle (massless and chargeless) trapped in harmonic oscillator in a uniformly accelerated frame (namely Rindler observer). Here the Rindler frame provides a Killing horizon without any intrinsic curvature to the system. This makes the present observations different from previous studies. We observe that for some particular values of parameters of the system (like acceleration, energy of the particle), the motion of the particle trapped in harmonic potential systematically goes from periodic state to the chaotic. This indicates that the existence of horizon alone, not the intrinsic curvature (i.e. the gravitational effect) in the background, is sufficient to induce the chaotic motion in the particle. We believe the present study further enlighten and balustrade the conjecture.

We analyze the motion of a {\it massless} and {\it chargeless} particle very near to the event horizon. It reveals that the radial motion has exponential growing nature which indicates that there is a possibility of inducing chaos in the particle motion of an integrable system when it comes under the influence of the horizon. This is being confirmed by investigating the Poincar$\acute{e}$ section of the trajectories with the introduction of a harmonic trap to confine the particle's motion. Two situations are investigated: (a) {\it any} static, spherically symmetric black hole and, (b) spacetime represents a stationary, axisymmetric black hole (e.g., Kerr metric). In both cases, the largest Lyapunov exponent has upper bound which is the surface gravity of the horizon. We find that the inclusion of rotation in the spacetime introduces more chaotic fluctuations in the system. The possible implications are finally discussed.

If gravity is an emergent phenomenon, as suggested by several recent results, then the structure of the action principle for gravity should encode this fact. With this motivation we study several features of the Einstein-Hilbert action and establish direct connections with horizon thermodynamics. We begin by introducing the concept of holographically conjugate variables (HCVs) in terms of which the surface term in the action has a specific relationship with the bulk term. In addition to g_{ab} and its conjugate momentum \sqrt{-g} M^{cab}, this procedure allows us to (re)discover and motivate strongly the use of f^{ab}=\sqrt{-g}g^{ab} and its conjugate momentum N^c_{ab}. The gravitational action can then be interpreted as a momentum space action for these variables. We also show that many expressions in classical gravity simplify considerably in this approach. For example, the field equations can be written in a form analogous to Hamilton's equations for a suitable Hamiltonian if we use these variables. More importantly, the variation of the surface term, evaluated on any null surface which acts a local Rindler horizon can be given a direct thermodynamic interpretation. The term involving the variation of the dynamical variable leads to TδS while the term involving the variation of the conjugate momentum leads to SδT. We have found this correspondence only for the choice of variables (g_{ab}, \sqrt{-g} M^{cab}) or (f^{ab}, N^c_{ab}). We use this result to provide a direct thermodynamical interpretation of the boundary condition in the action principle, when it is formulated in a spacetime region bounded by the null surfaces. We analyse these features from several different perspectives and provide a detailed description, which offers insights about the nature of classical gravity and emergent paradigm.

Thermal properties of a static horizon, (like the entropy S, heat content TS etc.) can be obtained either from the surface term of the Einstein-Hilbert action or by evaluating the Noether charge, corresponding to the diffeomorphisms generated by the timelike Killing vector field. We show that, for a wide class of geometries, the same results can be obtained using the vector field which produces an infinitesimal coordinate transformation between two physically relevant reference frames, viz. the freely falling frame near the horizon and the static, accelerated, frame. In particular, the infinitesimal coordinate transformation from inertial coordinates to uniformly accelerated frame can be used to obtain the heat content and entropy of the Rindler horizon. This result offers insight into understanding the observer dependent degrees of freedom which contribute to the entropy of null surfaces.
