Rapidly rotating neutron stars are similar to highly flattened ellipsoids. Observed spectra of flattened stars must exhibit effects of non spherical shape and the gravitational darkening. We examined in detail the influence of both effects on the observed central energies and profiles of lines of highly ionized iron, FeXXV and FeXXVI. We note that the gravitational darkening effect do not change the central energy of lines. What is important, spectra of neutron stars that rotate with different frequencies and are seen at various inclinations angles differ significantly. The appearance and the depth of lines strongly depends on the parameters like the inclination angle of the star or the frequency of the star rotation. In this paper we clearly show that the gravitational darkening effect should be included in realistic model of the atmospheres of the neutron stars.

In this paper, we discuss the influence of the gravitational darkening effect on the emergent spectrum of a fast-rotating, flattened neutron star. Model atmosphere codes always calculate spectra of emergent intensities and fluxes emitted from the unit surface on the star in plane-parallel geometry. Here we took a step beyond that and calculated a small sample grid of theoretical spectra integrated over the distorted surface of a sample rotating neutron star seen by a distant observer at various inclination angles. We assumed parameters like two dimensionless angular velocities $\barΩ^2=0.30$ and 0.60, the effective temperature of a nonrotating star $T_{\rm eff}=2.20\times 10^7\,$K, the logarithm of the surface gravity of a spherical star $\log(g)=14.40$ (cgs), and inclination angles from $i=0^\circ$ to $i=90^\circ$ with step $Δi=10^\circ$. We assumed that the atmosphere consists of a mixture of hydrogen and helium with $M_{\rm H}=0.70$ and $M_{\rm He}=0.30$. At each point on the neutron star surface, we calculated true intensities for local values of parameters ($T_{\rm eff}$ and $\log(g)$), and these monochromatic intensities are next integrated over the whole surface to obtain the emergent spectrum. In this paper, we compute for the first time theoretical spectra of the fast-rotating neutron star. Our work clearly shows that the gravitational darkening effect strongly influences the spectrum and should be included in realistic models of the atmospheres of rotating neutron stars.

A large fraction of accreting black hole and neutron stars systems present clear evidence of the reprocessing of X-rays in the atmosphere of an optically-thick accretion disk. The main hallmarks of X-ray reflection include fluorescent K-shell emission lines from iron ($\sim 6.4-6.9$ keV), the absorption iron K-edge ($\sim 7-9$ keV), and a broad featureless component known as the Compton hump ($\sim 20-40$ keV). This Compton hump is produced as the result of the scattering of high-energy photons ($E \gtrsim 10$ keV) of the relatively colder electrons ($T_e \sim 10^5-10^7$ K) in the accretion disk, in combination with photoelectric absorption from iron. The treatment of this process in most current models of ionized X-ray reflection has been done using an approximated Gaussian redistribution kernel. This approach works sufficiently well up to $\sim100$ keV, but it becomes largely inaccurate at higher energies and at relativistic temperatures ($T_e\sim10^9$ K). We present new calculations of X-ray reflection using a modified version of our code XILLVER, including an accurate solution for Compton scattering of the reflected unpolarized photons in the disk atmosphere. This solution takes into account quantum electrodynamic and relativistic effects allowing the correct treatment of high photon energies and electron temperatures. We show new reflection spectra computed with this model, and discuss the improvements achieved in the reproducing the correct shape of the Compton hump, the discrepancies with previous calculations, and the expected impact of these new models in the interpretation of observational data.

Magnetized stars exhibit periodic variations of their longitudinal global magnetic fields, $B_e$, owing to rotation. Here, we present the second catalog of averaged stellar magnetic rotational phase curves and their parameters derived from a compilation of the published observational data and personal communications for 350 stars of various spectral types, which were published up to the end of December 2019. Magnetic Ap and Bp stars constitute the most numerous subset in the catalog (215 objects). Phase curves were obtained by fitting either a sinusoid or a double sine wave to series of the observed $B_e$ measurements using the least squares method. For some stars, we present magnetic phase curves derived from time series of the surface magnetic field, $B_s$, or obtained improved values of the rotational period, $P_{\rm rot}$. We have also identified eight stars in our catalog that host planets or planetary systems.

In this paper we show that X-ray spectral observations of the ATHENA mission, which is planned to launch in 2031, can constrain the equation of state of superdense matter. We use our well-constrained continuum fitting method for mass and radius determination of the neutron star. Model spectra of the emission from a neutron star were calculated using the atmosphere code ATM24. In the next step, those models were fitted to a simulated spectra of the neutron star calculated for ATHENA's WFI detector, using the satellite calibration files. To simulate the spectra we assumed three different values of effective temperatures, surface gravities and gravitational redshifts. There cases are related to the three different neutron star masses and radii. This analysis allows us to demonstrate the precision of our method and demonstrate the need for a fast detector onboard of ATHENA. A large grid of theoretical spectra was calculated with various parameters and a hydrogen-helium-iron composition of solar proportion. These spectra were fitted to the simulated spectrum to estimate the precision of mass and radius determination. In each case, we obtained very precise mass and radius values with errors in the range 3--10% for mass and in the range 2--8% for radius within the 1-sigma confidence error. We show here that with the ATHENA WFI detector, such a determination could be used to constrain the equation of state of superdense neutron star matter.

Since its discovery more than half a century ago Przybylski's star (HD101065) continues to excite the astronomical community by the unusual nature of its spectrum, exhibiting exotic element abundances. This star was also the first magnetic chemically peculiar A-type star for which the presence of rapid oscillations was established. Our analysis of newly acquired and historic longitudinal magnetic field measurements indicates that Przybylski's star is also unusual with respect to its extremely slow rotation. Adopting a dipolar structure for the magnetic field and using a sine wave fit to all reported longitudinal magnetic field values over the last 43yr, we find a probable rotation period P_rot ~ 188yr, which however has to be considered tentative as it does not represent a unique solution and has to be verified by future observations. Additionally, based on our own spectropolarimetric material obtained with HARPSpol, we discuss the impact of the anomalous structure of its atmosphere, in particular of the non-uniform horizontal and vertical distributions of chemical elements on the magnetic field measurements and the pulsational variability. Anomalies related to the vertical abundance stratification of Pr and Nd are for the first time used to establish the presence of a radial magnetic field gradient.

Thermal dominated X-ray spectra of neutron stars in quiescent transient X-ray binaries and neutron stars that undergo thermonuclear bursts are sensitive to mass and radius. The mass-radius relation of neutron stars depends on the equation of state that governs their interior. Constraining this relation accurately is thus of fundamental importance to understand the nature of dense matter. In this context we introduce a pipeline to calculate realistic model spectra of rotating neutron stars with hydrogen and helium atmospheres. An arbitrarily fast rotating neutron star with a given equation of state generates the spacetime in which the atmosphere emits radiation. We use the Lorene/nrotstar code to compute the spacetime numerically and the ATM24 code to solve the radiative transfer equations self-consistently. Emerging specific intensity spectra are then ray-traced through the neutron star's spacetime from the atmosphere to a distant observer with the Gyoto code. Here, we present and test our fully relativistic numerical pipeline. To discuss and illustrate the importance of realistic atmosphere models we compare our model spectra to simpler models like the commonly used isotropic color-corrected blackbody emission. We highlight the importance of considering realistic model-atmosphere spectra together with relativistic ray tracing to obtain accurate predictions. We also insist on the crucial impact of the star's rotation on the observables. Finally, we close a controversy that has been appearing in the literature in the recent years regarding the validity of the ATM24 code.

We obtained the very good fit with the reduced $χ^2$ per degree of freedom equal 1.08 for P13, 1.01 for ULX1, and 1.14 for ULX5.The normalization of our model constrains the distance to the source. The resulting distances are $D=3.41^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$, $6.55_{-0.81}^{+0.69}$ and $2.60^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$~Mpc for P13, ULX1 and ULX5 respectively. The distances to P13 and ULX5 are in perfect agreement with previous distance measurements to their host galaxies. Our results confirm that P13, ULX1 and ULX5 may contain central hot neutron star. When the outgoing emission is computed by integration over the emitting surface and successfully fitted to the data, then the resulting model normalization is the direct distance indicator.

Global magnetic fields of flare stars can evolve rapidly, in time scale of hundreds or dozens of days. We believe, that such changes result from rapid superposition of local magnetic fields generated by differential rotation of those stars. We discuss possible mechanisms of generation and dissipation of local and global magnetic fields in sample flare stars OT Ser and YZ CMi. We propose mechanism of magnetic braking of these stars, in which differential rotation generates local magnetic fields, and eventually energy accumulated in local fields is radiated away by flares. We obtained estimates of the rotational energy and the energy of the global magnetic field of OT Ser and YZ CMi. We also show that the energy of the local magnetic fields dissipated during superflare of YZ CMi on 9 February 2008 (UT 20:22:00) did not influence the global magnetic field of this star.

Up to now global magnetic field were discoverd and measured in stars of many types and their behavior partially was studied. Magnetic behavior of Ap Bp stars is the most thoroughly studied. The catalog contains information about 182 such objects. The main goals for the construction of the catalog are: 1. Review and summarize our kowledge about magnetic behavior of different types of stars. 2. The whole data are uniformly presented and processed which will allow one to perform statistical analysis of the variability of the (longitudinal) magnetic fields of stars. 3. The informations are presented in the most convenient form for testing different theoretical models of different kind. 4. The catalog will be useful for the development of observational programs.

Apparent variability of the longitudinal magnetic fields in most stars is caused by rotation, which quantitavely changes projection of the magnetic field configuration on the line of sight. This is a purely geometrical effect and is not related to possible intrinsic changes of the field. In some stars we observe changes of the magnetic phase curve with time, which means that parameters of the magnetic field change. Such changes occur in some objects in time scale of several years, which is few orders of magnitude faster than predicted by theory. Those changes imply need for improvement of the theory of magnetic field evolution. We demonstrate changes of the rotational phase curves in few stars.

We study the appearance of the neutron star - accretion disk system as seen by a distant observer in the UV/X-ray domain. The observed intensity spectra are computed assuming non-spherical geometry of the whole system, in which outgoing spectrum is not represented by the flux spectrum, the latter being valid for spherically symmetric objects. Intensity spectra of our model display double bumps in UV/X-ray energy domains. Such structure is caused by the fact that the the source is not spherically symmetric, and the proper integration of intensity over emitted area is needed to reproduce observed spectral shape. Relative normalization of double bump is self consistently computed by our model. X-ray spectra of such a type were often observed in LMXB with accretion disk, ultra luminous X-ray sources, and accreting black hole systems with hot inner compact corona. Our model naturally explains high energy broadening of the disk spectrum observed in some binaries. We attempted to fit our model to X-ray data of XTE~J1709-267 from {\it XMM-Newton}. Unfortunately, the double intensity bump predicted by our model for LMXB is located in soft X-ray domain, uncovered by existing data for this source.

[Abridged] Context. The high-energy radiation from black-hole binaries may be due to the reprocessing of a lamp located on the black hole axis, emitting X-rays. The observed spectrum is made of 3 components: the direct spectrum; the thermal bump; and the reflected spectrum made of the Compton hump and the iron-line complex.
Aims. We aim at computing accurately the complete reprocessed spectrum (thermal bump + reflected) of black-hole binaries over the entire X-ray band. We also determine the strength of the direct component. Our choice of parameters is adapted to a source showing an important thermal component.
Methods. We compute in full GR the illumination of a thin disk by a lamp along the rotation axis. We use the ATM21 radiative transfer code to compute the spectrum emitted along the disk. We ray trace this local spectrum to determine the reprocessed spectrum as observed at infinity. We discuss the dependence of the local and ray-traced spectra on the emission angle and spin.
Results. We show the importance of the angle dependence of the total disk specific intensity spectrum emitted by the illuminated atmosphere when the thermal disk emission if fully taken into account. High spin implies high temperature in the inner regions, so the emitted thermal disk spectrum covers the iron-line complex. As a result we locally observe absorption lines produced in the hot disk atmosphere. Absorption lines are narrow and disappear after ray tracing the local spectrum.
Conclusions. Our results mainly highlight the importance of considering the angle dependence of the local spectrum when computing reprocessed spectra, as was already found in a recent study. The main new result of our work is to show the importance of computing the thermal bump of the spectrum, as this feature can change considerably the observed iron-line complex.

Compton scattering is the dominant opacity source in hot neutron stars, accretion disks around black holes and hot coronae. We collected here a set of numerical expressions of the Compton scattering redistribution functions for unpolarized radiation (RF), which are more exact than the widely used Kompaneets equation. The principal aim of this paper is presentation of the RF by Guilbert (1981) which is corrected for the computational errors in the original paper. This corrected RF was used in the series of papers on model atmosphere computations of hot neutron stars. We have also organized four existing algorithms for the RF computations into a unified form ready to use in radiative transfer and model atmosphere codes. The exact method by Nagirner and Poutanen (1993) was numerically compared to all other algorithms in a very wide spectral range from hard X-rays to radio waves. Sample computations of the Compton scattering redistribution functions in thermal plasma were done for temperatures corresponding to the atmospheres of bursting neutron stars and hot intergalactic medium. Our formulae are also useful to the study Compton scattering of unpolarised microwave background radiation in hot intra-cluster gas and the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We conclude, that the formulae by Guilbert (1981) and the exact quantum mechanical formulae yield practically the same redistribution functions for gas temperatures relevant to the atmospheres of X-ray bursting neutron stars, $T \le 10^8$ K.

This paper presents a series of 95 new measurements of the longitudinal (effective) magnetic field $B_e$ of the Ap star $γ$ Equ (HD 201601). Observations were obtained at the coudé focus of the 1-m reflector at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS) in Russia over a time period of 4190 days (more than 11 years). We compiled a long record of $B_e$ points, adding our measurements to all published data. The time series of magnetic data consists of 395 $B_e$ points extending for 24488 days, or over 67 years. Various methods of period determination were examined for the case in which the length of the observed time series is rather short and amounts only to ~69 percent of the period. We argue that the fitting of a sine wave to the observed $B_e$ points by least squares yields the most reliable period in the case of $γ$ Equ. Therefore, the best period for long-term magnetic variations of $γ$ Equ, and hence the rotational period, is $P_{\rm rot}=35462.5 \pm 1149$ days $= 97.16 \pm 3.15$ years.

The Stark-induced shift and asymmetry, the so-called pressure shift (PS) of $H_α$ and $H_β$ Balmer lines in spectra of DA white dwarfs (WDs), as masking effects in measurements of the gravitational red shift in WDs, have been examined in detail. The results are compared with our earlier ones from before a quarter of a century (Grabowski et al. 1987, hereafter ApJ'87; Madej and Grabowski 1990). In these earlier papers, as a dominant constituent of the Balmer-line-profiles, the standard, symmetrical Stark line profiles, shifted as the whole by PS-effect, were applied to all spectrally active layers of the WD atmosphere. At present, in each of the WD layers, the Stark-line-profiles (especially of $H_β$) are immanently asymmetrical and shifted due to the effects of strong inhomogeneity of the perturbing fields in plasma. To calculate the Stark line-profiles in successive layers of the WD atmosphere we used the modified Full Computer Simulation Method (mFCSM), able to take adequately into account the complexity of local elementary quantum processes in plasma. In the case of the $H_α$ line, the present value of Stark-induced shift of the synthetic $H_α$ line-profile is about twice smaller than the previous one (ApJ'87) and it is negligible in comparison with the gravitational red shift. In the case of the $H_β$ line, the present value of Stark-induced shift of the synthetic $H_β$ line-profile is about twice larger than the previous one. The source of this extra shift is the asymmetry of $H_β$ peaks.

We re-analyzed SUZAKU data of the black hole candidate 4U 1630-472 being in the high/soft state. We show that the continuum X-ray spectrum of 4U 1630-472 with iron absorption lines can be satisfactorily modeled by the spectrum from an accretion disk atmosphere. Absorption lines of highly ionized iron originating in hot accretion disk atmosphere can be an alternative or complementary explanation to the wind model usually favored for these type of sources. We model continuum and line spectra using a single model. Absorption lines of highly ionized iron can origin in upper parts of the disk atmosphere which is intrinsically hot due to high disk temperature. Iron line profiles computed with natural, thermal and pressure broadenings match very well observations. We showed that the accretion disk atmosphere can effectively produce iron absorption lines observed in 4U 1630-472 spectrum. Absorption line arising in accretion disk atmosphere is the important part of the observed line profile, even if there are also other mechanisms responsible for the absorption features. Nevertheless, the wind theory can be an artifact of the fitting procedure, when the continuum and lines are fitted as separate model components.

We present angle-dependent, broad-band intensity spectra from accretion disks around black holes of 10 M$_\odot$. In our computations disks are assumed to be slim, which means that the radial advection is taken into account while computing effective temperature of the disk. We attempt to reconstruct continuum and line spectra of X-ray binaries in soft state, i.e. dominated by the disk component of multitemperature shape.
We follow how the iron line complex depends on the external irradiation, an accretion rate and a black hole spin. Full radiative transfer is solved including effects of Compton scattering, free-free and all important bound-free transitions of 10 main elements. Moreover, we include here the fundamental series of iron lines from helium-like and hydrogen-like ions, and fluorescent K$_α$ and K$_β$ lines from low ionized iron. We consider two cases: non-rotating black hole, and black hole rotating with almost maximum spin a=0.98, and obtain spectra for five accretion disks from hard X-rays to the infrared. In non irradiated disks, resonance lines from He-like and H-like iron appear mostly in absorption. Such disk spectra exhibit limb-darkening in the whole energy range. External irradiation causes that iron resonance lines appear in emission. Furthermore, depending on disk effective temperature, fluorescent iron K$_α$ and K$_β$ lines are present in disk emitting spectra. All models with irradiation exhibit limb-brightening in their X-ray reflected continua. We show, that the disk around stellar black hole itself is hot enought to produce strong absorption resonance lines of iron. Emission lines can be observed only if heating by external X-rays dominates over thermal processess in hot disk atmosphere. Irradiated disks are usually brighter in X-ray continuum when seen edge on, and fainter when seen face on.

Model equations allow for multiple Compton scattering of radiation on free electrons, and for large relative photon-electron energy exchange at the time of scattering. We present spectra in specific intensities integrated over the disk surface. Theoretical outgoing intensity spectra show soft X-ray excess below 1 keV, and distinct K_alpha and K_beta fluorescent lines of iron. We demonstrate the existence of the Compton Shoulder and claim that it can contribute to the asymmetry and equivalent widths of some observed Fe K_alpha lines in AGN. Our models exhibit the effect of limb-brightening in reflected X-rays.

We re-examine the effects of Compton scattering on the emergent spectra of hot DA white dwarfs in the soft X-ray range. Earlier studies have implied that sensitive X-ray observations at wavelengths $λ< 50$ Åmight be capable of probing the flux deficits predicted by the redistribution of electron-scattered X-ray photons toward longer wavelengths. We adopt two independent numerical approaches to the inclusion of Compton scattering in the computation of pure hydrogen atmospheres in hydrostatic equilibrium. One employs the Kompaneets diffusion approximation formalism, while the other uses the cross-sections and redistribution functions of Guilbert. Models and emergent spectra are computed for stellar parameters representative of HZ 43 and Sirius B, and for models with an effective temperature $T_{\rm eff} = 100 000$ K. The differences between emergent spectra computed for Compton and Thomson scattering cases are completely negligible in the case of both HZ 43 and Sirius B models, and are also negligible for all practical purposes for models with temperatures as high as $T_{\rm eff} = 100 000$ K. Models of the soft X-ray flux from these stars are instead dominated by uncertainties in their fundamental parameters.

We analyzed archival X-ray spectra of MXB 1728-34 obtained in 1996-99 by the Proportional Counter Array on board of the RXTE satellite. X-ray spectra were fitted to our extensive grids of model atmosphere spectra to determine the effective temperature T_eff on the neutron star surface, logarithm of surface gravity log(g), and the gravitational redshift z simultaneously. We have chosen fitting by numerical model spectra plus broad Gaussian line, modified by interstellar absorption and the absorption on dust. We arbitrarily assumed either hydrogen-helium chemical composition of a model atmosphere, or H-He-Fe mixture in solar proportion. The statistically best values of log(g), and z subsequently were used to determine mass and radius of the neutron star. We obtained the best values of the parameters for the neutron star in X-ray burst source MXB 1728-34: mass either M=0.40 or 0.63 M_sol (for H-He or H-He-Fe models, respectively), radius R=4.6 or 5.3 km, log(g)=14.6 or 14.6 and the gravitational redshift z=0.14 or 0.22. All the above parameters have very wide 1-sigma confidence limits. Their values strongly support the equation of state for strange matter in MXB 1728-34.

Measurements of the stellar longitudinal magnetic field B_e were performed with the hydrogen line polarimeter and the 6-m optical telescope of Special Astrophysical Observatory on 20/21 August 1989. We obtained a single 3-hour series of 1720 rapid B_e measurements for this star with the average time resolution of 6.6 sec. The averaged value of <B_e> on this night equals -750 \pm 22 G. Both the power spectrum and the amplitude spectrum of the B_e time series essentially are flat. However, they show the presence of a marginally significant magnetic period at P_B = 3.596 min. which is real with the probability 67 %. The amplitude of the magnetic field variations with this period equals 347 \pm 31 G. We did not detect variations of B_e field in gamma Equ with the well-known photometric period, P_phot=12.44 min.

This paper presents the set of plane-parallel model atmosphere equations for a very hot neutron star (X-ray burst source). The model equations assume both hydrostatic and radiative equilibrium, and the equation of state of an ideal gas in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The equation of radiative transfer includes terms describing Compton scattering of photons on free electrons in fully relativistic thermal motion, for photon energies approaching m_e *c^2. Model equations take into account many bound-free and free-free energy-dependent opacities of hydrogen, helium, and the iron ions, and also a dozen bound-bound opacities for the highest ions of iron. We solve model equations by partial linearisation and the technique of variable Eddington factors. Large grid of H-He-Fe model atmospheres of X-ray burst sources has been computed for 10^7 < T_eff < 3*10^7 K, a wide range of surface gravity, and various iron abundances. We demonstrate that the spectra of X-ray bursters with iron present in the accreting matter differ significantly from pure H-He spectra (published in an earlier paper), and also from blackbody spectra. Comptonized spectra with significant iron abundance are generally closer to blackbody spectra than spectra of H-He atmospheres. The ratio of color to effective temperatures in our grid always remains in the range 1.2 < T_c/T_eff < 1.85. The present grid of model atmospheres and theoretical X-ray spectra will be used to determine the effective temperatures, radii and M/R ratios of bursting neutron stars from observational data.

Mass distribution of white dwarfs in this sample exhibits the peak at M = 0.562 M_sol (carbon core stars), and the tail towards higher masses. We have found, that the number distribution of all chemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength is described by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this type hold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemical peculiarity. The exponential form of the above distribution function can break down below about 100 Gs, the latter value representing approximately the resolution of our analysis for A type stars.
