The purpose of this work is to spectroscopically analyse the classical Cepheid V708 Car. A preliminary check of the spectrum of V708 Car showed that this is a lithium-rich supergiant. We also found that V708 Car has an unusual chemical composition in that the abundances of various elements correlate with their condensation temperatures. We tried to find an explanation of this feature, which is unusual for classical Cepheids. For the spectroscopic analysis, we used methods based on the assumption of local and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium. We determined the fundamental parameters of our program star V708 Car. This long-period Cepheid has a mass of about 12 M$_{\odot}$. We derived the abundances of 27 chemical elements in this star. They are clearly correlated with their condensation temperature: the higher the condensation temperature, the lower the abundance (there are exceptions for sodium and barium, however). We explain this peculiar chemical composition of the V708 Car atmosphere by the gas-dust separation in the envelope of this star. A similar mechanism leads to the observed peculiarities of the chemical composition of $λ$ Boo, W Vir, and asymptotic giant branch stars.

While looking for recently discovered distant Cepheids with an interesting chemical composition, we noticed one star (OGLE GD-CEP-1353) with extremely large equivalent widths of spectral lines of heavy elements. The aim of this work is to perform an abundance analysis, and to find a possible explanation for the found chemical anomaly. Quantitative analysis of the equivalent widths and synthetic spectrum synthesis were used to derive abundances in this star. Both local and nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE and NLTE) approximations were used in our analysis. Abundances of 28 chemical elements from carbon to thorium were derived. While light and iron peak elements show abundances typical for distant Cepheids (located in the outer disk), the s-process elements are overabundant about one dex. r-process elements are slightly less overabundant. This makes the star a unique Cepheid of our Galaxy.

Classical Cepheids (CCs) are solid distance indicators and tracers of young stellar populations. Our aim is to provide iron, oxygen, and sulfur abundances for the largest and most homogeneous sample of Galactic CCs ever analyzed. The current sample covers a wide range in Galactocentric distances (RG), pulsation modes and periods. High-resolution and high S/N spectra collected with different spectrographs were adopted to estimate the atmospheric parameters. Individual distances are based on Gaia trigonometric parallaxes or on near-infrared Period-Luminosity relations. We found that Fe and alpha-element radial gradients based on CCs display a well-defined change in the slope for RG larger than 12 kpc. Radial gradients based on open clusters, covering a wide range in age, display similar trends, meaning that the flattening in the outer disk is an intrinsic feature of the radial gradients since it is independent of age. Empirical evidence indicates that the radial gradient for S is steeper than for Fe. The difference in the slope is a factor of two in the linear fit. We also found that S is, on average, under-abundant compared with O. We performed a detailed comparison with Galactic chemical evolution models and we found that a constant Star Formation Efficiency for RG larger than 12 kpc takes account for the flattening in both Fe and alpha-elements. To further constrain the impact that predicted S yields for massive stars have on radial gradients, we adopted a "toy model" and we found that the flattening in the outermost regions requires a decrease of a factor of four in the current S predictions. Sulfur photospheric abundances, compared with other alpha-elements, have the key advantage of being a volatile element. Therefore, stellar S abundances can be directly compared with nebular S abundances in external galaxies.

The technique of line depth ratios (LDR) is one of the methods to determine the effective temperature of a star. They are crucial in the spectroscopic studies of variable stars like Cepheids since no simultaneous photometry is usually available. A good number of LDR-temperature relations are already available in the optical domain, here we want to expand the number of relations available in the near-infrared in order to fully exploit the capabilities of current and upcoming near-infrared spectrographs.
We used 115 simultaneous spectroscopic observations in the optical and the near-infrared for six Cepheids and optical line depth ratios to find new pairs of lines sensitive to temperature and to calibrate LDR-temperature relations in the near-infrared spectral range. We have derived 87 temperature calibrations valid in the [4800-6500] K range of temperatures. The typical uncertainty for a given relation is 60-70 K, and combining many of them provides a final precision within 30-50 K. We found a discrepancy between temperatures derived from optical or near-infrared LDR for pulsations phases close to phi ~ 0.0 and we discuss the possible causes for these differences.
Line depth ratios in the near-infrared will allow us to spectroscopically investigate highly reddened Cepheids in the Galactic centre or in the far side of the disk.

The neutron capture element promethium does not have stable isotopes and the maximum half-life time is about 18 years. Thus its presence in this peculiar star would indicate an ongoing process of irradiation of its surface layers with free neutrons. Unfortunately, almost all promethium lines are heavily blended with lines of other neutron capture elements and other species. We selected and analysed three lines of promethium (Pm I and Pm II) and came to the conclusion that at present it is impossible to definitely claim the presence of this element in Przybylski's star atmosphere.

Mapping the Galactic spiral structure is a difficult task since the Sun is located in the Galactic plane and because of dust extinction. For these reasons, molecular masers in radio wavelengths have been used with great success to trace the Milky Way spiral arms. Recently, Gaia parallaxes have helped in investigating the spiral structure in the Solar extended neighborhood. In this paper, we propose to determine the location of the spiral arms using Cepheids since they are bright, young supergiants with accurate distances (they are the first ladder of the extragalactic distance scale). They can be observed at very large distances; therefore, we need to take the Galactic warp into account. Thanks to updated mid-infrared photometry and to the most complete catalog of Galactic Cepheids, we derived the parameters of the warp using a robust regression method. Using a clustering algorithm, we identified groups of Cepheids after having corrected their Galactocentric distances from the (small) effects of the warp. We derived new parameters for the Galactic warp, and we show that the warp cannot be responsible for the increased dispersion of abundance gradients in the outer disk reported in previous studies. We show that Cepheids can be used to trace spiral arms, even at large distances from the Sun. The groups we identify are consistent with previous studies explicitly deriving the position of spiral arms using young tracers (masers, OB(A) stars) or mapping overdensities of upper main-sequence stars in the Solar neighborhood thanks to Gaia data.

Classical Cepheids are the most popular distance indicators and tracers of young stellar populations. The key advantage is that they are bright and they can be easily identified in Local Group and Local Volume galaxies. Their evolutionary and pulsation properties depend on their chemical abundances. The main aim of this investigation is to perform a new and accurate abundance analysis of two tens of calibrating Galactic Cepheids using high spectral resolution (R$\sim$40,000-115,000) and high S/N spectra ($\sim$400) covering the entire pulsation cycle. We focus our attention on possible systematics affecting the estimate of atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances along the pulsation cycle. We cleaned the line list by using atomic transition parameters based on laboratory measurements and by removing lines that are either blended or display abundance variations along the pulsation cycle. The spectroscopic approach that we developed brings forward small dispersions in the variation of the atmospheric parameters ($σ$($T_{\rm eff}$)$\sim$50 K, $σ$($\log{g}$)$\sim$0.2 dex, and $σ$($ξ$)$\sim$0.2 km/s) and in the abundance of both iron ($\lesssim$ 0.05 dex) and alpha elements ($\lesssim$0.10 dex) over the entire pulsation cycle. We also provide new and accurate effective temperature templates by splitting the calibrating Cepheids into four different period bins, ranging from short to long periods. For each period bin, we performed an analytical fit with Fourier series providing $θ= 5040/{T_{\rm eff}}$ as a function of the pulsation phase. The current findings are a good viaticum to trace the chemical enrichment of the Galactic thin disk by using classical Cepheids and a fundamental stepping stone for further investigations into the more metal-poor regime typical of Magellanic Cepheids.

Radial abundance gradients provide sound constraints for chemo-dynamical models of galaxies. Azimuthal variations of abundance ratios are solid diagnostics to understand their chemical enrichment. In this paper we investigate azimuthal variations of abundances in the Milky Way using Cepheids. We provide the detailed chemical composition (25 elements) of 105 Classical Cepheids from high-resolution SALT spectra observed by the MAGIC project. Negative abundance gradients, with abundances decreasing from the inner to the outer disc, have been reported both in the Milky Way and in external galaxies, and our results are in full agreement with literature results. We find azimuthal variations of the oxygen abundance [O/H]. While a large number of external spirals show negligible azimuthal variations, the Milky Way seems to be one of the few galaxies with noticeable [O/H] azimuthal asymmetries. They reach ~0.2 dex in the inner Galaxy and in the outer disc, where they are the largest, thus supporting similar findings for nearby spiral galaxies as well as recent 2D chemo-dynamical models.

For the first time, a direct NLTE analysis of carbon and nitrogen lines in the spectra of nine RR Lyrae stars was carried out. We have determined the abundances of these elements together with oxygen, and have shown that the nitrogen content is increased in metallicity deficient program stars. We conclude that this is a sign of the first dredge up, which occurred at the previous stage of the red giant branch, and brought material processed in an incomplete CNO cycle to the surface of the star. This effect is significantly enhanced by thermohaline (extra-) mixing, which is more effective for metal-poor RR Lyrae stars. This is clearly seen in the plot showing that C/N ration in our sample of stars gradually decreases as metallicity decreases from about --0.2 to --2. Oxygen abundance depends on metallicity in a similar way to what we see in the Population II stars.

The iron abundance [Fe/H] and key elements (Li, C, O, Mg, Si) indicative of the planet formation, as well as the dependencies of [El/Fe] on $T_{cond}$, were analyzed. The iron abundances determined in our sample stars with detected massive planets range within -0.3<[Fe/H]<0.4. The behaviour of [C/Fe], [O/Fe], [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] relative to [Fe/H] is consistent with the Galactic Chemical Evolution trends. The mean values of C/O and [C/O] are <C/O>= 0.48 +/-0.07 and <[C/O]>=-0.07 +/-0.07, which are slightly lower than solar ones. The Mg/Si ratios range from 0.83 to 0.95 for four stars in our sample and from 1.0 to 1.86 for the remaining 21 stars. Various slopes of [El/Fe] vs. Tcond were found. The dependencies of the planetary mass on metallicity, the lithium abundance, the C/O and Mg/Si ratios, and also on the [El/Fe]-Tcond slopes were considered.

We collected over 6000 high-resolution spectra of four dozen field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables pulsating either in the fundamental (39 RRab) or in the first overtone (9 RRc) mode. We measured radial velocities (RVs) of four strong metallic and four Balmer lines along the entire pulsational cycle and derived RV amplitudes with accuracies better than 1$-$2~\kmsec. The new amplitudes were combined with literature data for 23~RRab and 3~RRc stars (total sample 74 RRLs) which allowed us to investigate the variation of the Bailey diagram (photometric amplitude versus period) when moving from optical to mid-infrared bands and to re-cast the Bailey diagram in terms of RV amplitudes. We found that RV amplitudes for RRab are minimally affected by nonlinear phenomena (shocks) and multi-periodicity (Blazhko effect). The RV slope ($\log P$--A(V$_r$)) when compared with the visual slope ($\log P$--A($V$)) is shallower and the dispersion, at fixed period, decreases by a factor of two. We constructed homogeneous sets of Horizontal Branch evolutionary models and nonlinear, convective pulsation models of RRLs to constrain the impact of evolutionary effects on their pulsation properties. Evolution causes, on the Bailey diagram based on RV amplitudes, a modest variation in pulsation period and a large dispersion in amplitude. The broad dispersion in period of the Bailey diagram is mainly caused by variation in RRL intrinsic parameters (stellar mass, chemical composition). Empirical evidence indicates that RV amplitudes are an optimal diagnostic for tracing the mean effective temperature across the RRab instability strip.

Those stars are located at Galactocentric distances smaller than 1 kpc. All investigated stars show near-to-solar elemental abundances. By combining these new data with our previous studies, this result suggests that the radial distribution of iron abundance on a logarithmic scale gradually increases from the outskirts of the Galactic disc to Galactocentric distances of about 2-4 kpc, reaching there a maximal value of about +0.4 dex, and then declines sharply to about the solar value at the Galactic Center.

The ratio of the first overtone (1O) / fundamental (F) periods of mixed-mode Cepheids that pulsate simultaneously in these two modes (F/1O) is metallicity-dependent. It can therefore be used to characterize the systems that host such variable stars. We want to take advantage of the F/1O double-mode Cepheids listed in the Gaia DR2 catalogue to derive the metallicity gradient in the Milky Way disk. The metallicity is derived from the ratio of the first overtone and fundamental periods provided by Gaia DR2 while the Gaia DR2 parallaxes are used to determine the Galactocentric distances of the stars. From a visual inspection of the light curves, it turns out that a large fraction (77%) of the Galactic F/1O double-mode Cepheids in Gaia DR2 are spurious detections. Gaia DR2 provides 3 new bona fide F/1O Cepheids. Combining them with the currently known F/1O Cepheids and using the Gaia DR2 parallaxes for the entire sample, we can derive the metallicity gradient in the Milky Way disk. We find a slope of -0.045$\pm$0.007 dex/kpc using a bootstrap method, and of -0.040$\pm$0.002 dex/kpc using a total least squares method. These results are in good agreement with previous determinations of the [Fe/H] gradient in the disk based on canonical Cepheids. The period ratio of F/1O Cepheids allows for a reliable determination of the metallicity gradient in the Milky Way, and in turn, in other systems that would be difficult to reach via classical spectroscopic methods.

We gathered more than 1130 high-resolution optical spectra for more than 250 Galactic classical Cepheids. The spectra were collected with different optical spectrographs: UVES at VLT, HARPS at 3.6m, FEROS at 2.2m MPG/ESO, and STELLA. To improve the effective temperature estimates, we present more than 150 new line depth ratio (LDR) calibrations that together with similar calibrations already available in the literature allowed us to cover a broad range in wavelength (between 5348 and 8427 angstrom) and in effective temperatures (between 3500 and 7700 K). This means the unique opportunity to cover both the hottest and coolest phases along the Cepheid pulsation cycle and to limit the intrinsic error on individual measurements at the level of ~100 K. Thanks to the high signal-to-noise ratio of individual spectra we identified and measured hundreds of neutral and ionized lines of heavy elements, and in turn, have the opportunity to trace the variation of both surface gravity and microturbulent velocity along the pulsation cycle. The accuracy of the physical parameters and the number of Fe I (more than one hundred) and Fe II (more than ten) lines measured allowed us to estimate mean iron abundances with a precision better than 0.1 dex. Here we focus on 14 calibrating Cepheids for which the current spectra cover either the entire or a significant portion of the pulsation cycle. The current estimates of the variation of the physical parameters along the pulsation cycle and of the iron abundances agree quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. Independent homogeneous estimates of both physical parameters and metal abundances based on different approaches that can constrain possible systematics are highly encouraged.

Context: Cepheids are excellent tracers of young stellar populations. They play a crucial role in astrophysics as standard candles. The chemistry of classical Cepheids in the Milky Way is now quite well-known. Despite a much larger sample, the chemical composition of Magellanic Cepheids has been only scarcely investigated. Aims: For the first time, we study the chemical composition of several Cepheids located in the same populous cluster: NGC 1866, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). To also investigate the chemical composition of Cepheids at lower metallicity, four targets are located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Our sample allows us to increase the number of Cepheids with known metallicities in the LMC/SMC by 20%/25% and the number of Cepheids with detailed chemical composition in the LMC/SMC by 46%/50%. Methods: We use canonical spectroscopic analysis to determine the chemical composition of Cepheids and provide abundances for a good number of $α$, iron-peak and neutron-capture elements. Results: We find that six Cepheids in the LMC cluster NGC 1866 have a very homogeneous chemical composition, also consistent with red giant branch (RGB) stars in the cluster. Period--age relations that include no or average rotation indicate that all the Cepheids in NGC 1866 have a similar age and therefore belong to the same stellar population. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical models accounting for luminosity and radial velocity variations. Using distances based on period-luminosity relations in the near- or mid-infrared, we investigate for the first time the metallicity distribution of the young population in the SMC in the depth direction. Preliminary results show no metallicity gradient along the SMC main body, but our sample is small and does not contain Cepheids in the inner few degrees of the SMC.

Atmospheric parameters and chemical compositions for ten stars with metallicities in the region of -2.2< [Fe/H] <-0.6 were precisely determined using high resolution, high signal to noise, spectra. For each star the abundances, for 14 to 27 elements, were derived using both LTE and NLTE approaches. In particular, differences by assuming LTE or NLTE are about 0.10 dex; depending on [Fe/H], Teff, gravity and element lines used in the analysis. We find that the O abundance has the largest error, ranging from 0.10 and 0.2 dex. The best measured elements are Cr, Fe, and Mn; with errors etween 0.03 and 0.11 dex. The stars in our sample were included in previous different observational work. We provide a consistent data analysis. The data dispersion introduced in the literature by different techniques and assumptions used by the different authors is within the observational errors, excepting for HD103095. We compare these results with stellar observations from different data sets and a number of theoretical galactic chemical evolution (GCE) simulations. We find a large scatter in the GCE results, used to study the origin of the elements. Within this scatter as found in previous GCE simulations, we cannot reproduce the evolution of the elemental ratios [Sc/Fe], [Ti/Fe], and [V/Fe] at different metallicities. The stellar yields from core collapse supernovae (CCSN) are likely primarily responsible for this discrepancy. Possible solutions and open problems are discussed.

We conducted an analysis of the distribution of elements from lithium to europium in 200 dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood ~20 pc with temperatures in the range 4800-6200 K and metallicities [Fe/H] higher than -0.5 dex. Determinations of atmospheric parameters and the chemical composition of the dwarfs were taken from our previous studies. We found that the lithium abundances in the planet-hosting solar-analog stars of our sample were lower than those in the stars without planetary systems. Our results reveal no significant differences exceeding the determination errors for the abundances of investigated elements, except for aluminium and barium, which are more and less abundant in the planet-hosting stars, respectively. We did not find confident dependences of the lithium, aluminium and barium abundances on the ages of our target stars (which is probable because of the small number of stars). Furthermore, we found no correlation between the abundance differences in [El/Fe] and the condensation temperature (Tcond) for stars in the 16 Cyg binary system, unlike the case for 51 Peg (HD 217014), for which a slight excess of volatile elements and a deficit of refractories were obtained relative to those of solar twins. We found that one of the components of 16 Cyg exhibits a slightly higher average abundance than its counterpart (<[El/H](A-B)> = 0.08+/-0.02 dex); however, no significant abundance trend versus Tcond was observed. Owing to the relatively large errors, we cannot provide further constraints for this system.

This star falls within a region of the inner thin disc poorly sampled in Cepheids. Our spectral analysis shows that iron, magnesium, silicon, calcium and titanium LTE abundances in that star support the presence of a plateau-like abundance distribution in the thin disc within 5 kpc of the Galactic center, as previously suggested by \cite{Maret15}. If confirmed, the flattening of the abundance gradient within that region could be the result of a decrease in the star formation rate due to dynamic effects, possibly from the central Galactic bar.

A robust classification of Cepheids into their different sub-classes and, in particular, between classical and Type II Cepheids, is necessary to properly calibrate the period-luminosity relations and for populations studies in the Galactic disc. Type II Cepheids are, however, very diverse, and classifications based either on intrinsic (period, light curve) or external parameters (e.g., [Fe/H], |z|) do not provide a unique classification. We want to ascertain the classification of two Cepheids, HQ Car and DD Vel, that are sometimes classified as classical Cepheids and sometimes as Type II Cepheids. To achieve this goal, we examine both their chemical composition and the presence of specific features in their spectra. We find emission features in the Hα and in the 5875.64 Å He I lines that are typical of W Vir stars. The [Na/Fe] (or [Na/Zn]) abundances are typical of thick-disc stars, while BL Her stars are Na-overabundant ([Na/Fe]>+0.5 dex). Finally, the two Cepheids show a possible (HQ Car) or probable (DD Vel) signature of mild dust-gas separation that is usually observed only in long-period type II Cepheids and RV Tau stars. These findings clearly indicate that HQ Car and DD Vel are both Type II Cepheids from the W Vir sub-class. Several studies have reported an increase in the Cepheids' abundance dispersion towards the outer (thin) disc. A detailed inspection of the Cepheid classification, in particular for those located in the outer disc, will indicate whether this feature is real or simply an artefact of the inclusion of type II Cepheids belonging to the thick disc in the current samples.

A large number of high-dispersion spectra of classical Cepheids were obtained in the region of the CaII H+K spectral lines. The analysis of these spectra allowed us to detect the presence of a strong Balmer line, H$ε$, for several Cepheids, interpreted as the signature of a blue companion: the presence of a sufficiently bright blue companion to the Cepheid results in a discernible strengthening of the CaII H + Hepsilon line relative to the CaII K line. We investigated 103 Cepheids, including those with known hot companions (B5-B6 main-sequence stars) in order to test the method. We could confirm the presence of a companion to WW Car and FN Vel (the existence of the former was only suspected before) and we found that these companions are blue hot stars. The method remains efficient when the orbital velocity changes in a binary system cannot be revealed and other methods of binarity detection are not efficient.

Recently an increasing number of studies were devoted to measure the abundances of neutron-capture elements heavier than iron in stars belonging to Galactic Open Clusters (OCs). OCs span a sizeable range in metallicity -0.6<[Fe/H]<+0.4), and they show abundances of light elements similar to disk stars of the same age. A different pattern is observed for heavy elements. A large scatter is observed for Ba, with most OCs showing [Ba/Fe] and [Ba/La] overabundant with respect to the Sun. The origin of this overabundance is not clearly understood. With the goal of providing new observational insights we determined radial velocities, atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of 27 giant stars members of five OCs: Cr 110, Cr 261, NGC 2477, NGC 2506 and NGC 5822. We used high-resolution spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph at ESO Paranal. We perform a detailed spectroscopic analysis of these stars to measure the abundance of up to 22 elements per star. We study the dependence of element abundance on metallicity and age with unprecedented detail, complementing our analysis with data culled from the literature. We confirm the trend of Ba overabundance in OCs, and show its large dispersion for clusters younger than ~4 Gyr. Finally, the implications of our results for stellar nucleosynthesis are discussed. We show in this work that the Ba enrichment compared to other neutron-capture elements in OCs cannot be explained by the contributions from the slow neutron-capture process and the rapid neutron-capture process. Instead, we argue that this anomalous signature can be explained by assuming an additional contribution by the intermediate neutron-capture process.

These data were combined with our previous NLTE results for the stars observed with Max Planck Gesellschaft telescope with the aim to investigate oxygen abundance distribution in Galactic thin disc. We find the slope of the radial (O/H) gradient value to be equal -0.058 dex/kpc. Nevertheless, we found that there could be a hint that the distribution might become flatter in the outer parts of the disc. This is also supported by other authors who studied open clusters, planetary nebulae and H II regions. Some mechanisms of flattening are discussed.

We aim to identify the birth place of the young pulsar PSR J0826+2637 in order to determine its kinematic age and give constraints on its radial and spatial (kick) velocity. Since the majority of neutron star (NS) progenitors are in associations or clusters, we search for a possible origin of the NS inside such stellar groups. We trace back the NS and the centres of possible birth associations and clusters to find close encounters. The kinematic age is then given by the time since the encounter. We use Monte Carlo simulations to account for observational uncertainties and the unknown radial velocity of the NS. We evaluate the outcome statistically. In order to find further indication for our findings, we also search for a runaway star that could be the former companion if it exists. We find that PSR J0826+2637 was probably born in the small young cluster Stock 7 ~3 Myr ago. This result is supported by the identification of the former companion candidate HIP 13962 (runaway star with spectral type G0Ia). The scenario predicts a near-zero radial velocity of the pulsar implying an inclination angle of its motion to the line-of-sight of 87+/-11 deg. We also present the chemical abundances of HIP 13962. We do not find enhanced alpha element abundances in the highly evolved star. However, the binary supernova scenario may be supported by the overabundance of r-process elements that could have been ejected during the supernova and accreted by the runaway star. Also, a high rotational velocity of v sin i ~29 km/s of HIP 13962 is consistent with evolution in a pre-SN binary system.

Context: Galactic abundance gradients set strong constraints to chemo-dynamical evolutionary models of the Milky Way. Given the PL relations that provide accurate distances and the large number of spectral lines, Cepheids are excellent tracers of the present-day abundance gradients. Aims: We want to measure the Galactic abundance gradient of several chemical elements. While the slope of the Cepheid iron gradient did not vary much from the very first studies, the gradients of the other elements are not that well constrained. In this paper we focus on the inner and outer regions of the Galactic thin disk. Methods: We use HR spectra (FEROS, ESPADONS, NARVAL) to measure the abundances of several light (Na, Al), alpha (Mg, Si, S, Ca), and heavy elements (Y, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, Eu) in a sample of 65 Milky Way Cepheids. Combining these results with accurate distances from period-Wesenheit relations in the NIR enables us to determine the abundance gradients in the Milky Way. Results: Our results are in good agreement with previous studies on either Cepheids or other tracers. In particular, we confirm an upward shift of approximatively 0.2 dex for the Mg abundances, as has recently been reported. We also confirm the existence of a gradient for all the heavy elements studied in the context of a LTE analysis. However, for Y, Nd, and especially La, we find lower abundances for Cepheids in the outer disk than reported in previous studies, leading to steeper gradients. This effect can be explained by the differences in the line lists used by different groups. Conclusions: Our data do not support a flattening of the gradients in the outer disk, in agreement with recent Cepheid studies and chemo-dynamical simulations. This is in contrast to the open cluster observations but remains compatible with a picture where the transition zone between the inner disk and the outer disk would move outward with time.

We undertake a statistical analysis of the radial abundance distributions in the Galactic disk within a theoretical framework for Galactic chemical evolution which incorporates the influence of spiral arms. 1) The mean mass of oxygen ejected per core-collapse SNe (CC SNe) event (which are concentrated within spiral arms) is $\sim$0.27 M$_{\odot}$; 2) the mean mass of iron ejected by `tardy' Type Ia SNe (SNeIa; progenitors of whom are older/longer-lived stars with ages $\simgt$100 Myr and up to several Gyr, which do not concentrate within spiral arms) is $\sim$0.58 M$_{\odot}$; 3) the upper mass of iron ejected by prompt SNeIa (SNe whose progenitors are younger/shorter-lived stars with ages $\simlt$100 Myr, which are concentrated within spiral arms) is $\leq$0.23 M$_{\odot}$ per event; 4) the corresponding mean mass of iron produced by CC SNe is $\leq$0.04 M$_{\odot}$ per event; (v) short-lived SNe (core-collapse or prompt SNeIa) supply $\sim$85% of the Galactic disk's iron.
The inferred low mean mass of oxygen ejected per CC SNe event implies a low upper mass limit for the corresponding progenitors of $\sim$23 M$_{\odot}$, otherwise the Galactic disk would be overabundant in oxygen.
The low mean mass of iron ejected by prompt SNeIa, relative to the mass produced by tardy SNeIa ($\sim$2.5 times lower), prejudices the idea that both sub-populations of SNeIa have the same physical nature. We suggest that, perhaps, prompt SNeIa are more akin to CC SNe, and discuss the implications of such a suggestion.

Line ratios in high dispersion spectra of the variable yield values of <Mv>=-3.40+-0.02 s.e.(+-0.04 s.d.), average effective temperature Teff=6195+-24 K, and intrinsic color (<B>-<V>)o = +0.506+-0.007, corresponding to a reddening of E(B-V)=0.25+-0.01, or E(B-V)(B0)=0.26+-0.01. The skewed light curve, intrinsic color, and luminosity of FF Aql are consistent with fundamental mode pulsation for a small amplitude classical Cepheid on the blue side of the instability strip, not a sinusoidal pulsator. A distance of 413+-14 pc is estimated from the Cepheid's angular diameter in conjunction with a mean radius of <R>=39.0+-0.7 Rsun inferred from its luminosity and effective temperature. The dust extinction towards FF Aql is described by a ratio of total-to-selective extinction of Rv=Av/E(B-V)=3.16+-0.34 according to the star's apparent distance modulus.

Additionally, its gradient across the Galactic disk is poorly constrained. We measure the abundance of yttrium and barium using the synthetic spectrum method from UVES high-resolution spectra of eight distant open clusters, namely Ruprecht 4, Ruprecht 7, Berkeley 25, Berkeley 73, Berkeley 75, NGC 6192, NGC 6404, and NGC 6583. The barium abundance was estimated using NLTE approximation. We confirm that Barium is indeed over-abundant in most clusters, especially young clusters. Four high-resolution spectra of the double-mode Cepheid V371 Per, obtained for the first time, showed the presence of the abnormally strong Li I 6707.76 A line. Our analysis of the light element abundances indicates that the star did not go through the evolutionary dredge-up stage. Large distance from the galactic plane and the low metallicity suggest that V371 Per may belong to the thick disc (or to the halo) of the Galaxy, which is consistent with its low metallicity [Fe/H]=-0.42 and the enhancement of the alpha- and s-elements relative to iron. Line splitting is observed in one of the spectra, which can be due to the non-radial pulsations.

The systematically smaller Hipparcos parallax for Polaris appears discrepant by comparison.

The aim of the present study is to determine the Li abundances for a large set of the FGK dwarfs and to analyse the connections between the Li content, stellar parameters, and activity. Atmospheric parameters, rotational velocities and Li abundances were determined from a homogeneous collection of the echelle spectra with high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio. Rotational velocities vsini were determined by calibrating the cross-correlation function. Effective temperatures Teff were estimated by the line-depth ratio method. Surface gravities log g were computed by two methods: iron ionization balance and parallax. LTE Li abundances were computed using the synthetic spectrum method. The behaviour of the Li abundance was examined in correlation with Teff, [Fe/H], vsini and level of activity in three stellar groups of different temperatures. The stellar parameters and Li abundances are presented for 150 slow rotating stars of the lower part of MS. The studied stars show a decline in the Li abundance with decreasing temperature Teff and a significant spread, which should be due to the differences of age. A correlation between Li abundance, vsini and level of chromospheric activity is seen for stars with 6000>Teff>5700 K, and it is tighter for stars with 5700>Teff>5200 K. Stars with Teff<5200 K do not show any correlation between log A(Li) and vsini. The relationship between chromospheric and coronal fluxes in active stars with detected Li as well as in less active stars gives a hint that there exist different conditions in the action of the dynamo mechanism in those stars. We found that the Li-activity correlation is evident only in a restricted temperature range and the Li abundance spread seems to be present in a group of low chromospheric activity stars that also show a broad spread in chromospheric vs coronal activity.

In fact, this is the first time that such a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of barium abundances in the galactic disc is carried out. As a result, we conclude that the Ba abundance distribution can be characterized by a zero gradient. This result is compared with derived gradients for other elements, and some reasons are briefly discussed for the independence of the barium abundances upon galactocentric distances.

In this study, we present the luminosity calibrations, where, for the first time, the effects of the effective temperature, microturbulent velocity, surface gravity, and the abundance have been disentangled. The calibrations are derived on the basis of a dataset of high-dispersion spectra of 60 yellow supergiants with highly reliable luminosities and accurate atmospheric parameters. This allowed to bring the uncertainty of the triplet-based absolute magnitudes down to 0.26 mag. The calibrations are suitable for spectral types F0-K0 and luminosity classes I-II, covering absolute magnitudes Mv from -1.0 to -10 mag.

We propose a statistical method for decomposition of contributions to iron production from various sources: supernovae Type II and the subpopulations of supernovae Type Ia -- prompt (their progenitors are short-lived stars of ages less then $\sim$100 Myr) and tardy (whose progenitors are long-lived stars of ages $>$100 Myr). To do that, we develop a theory of oxygen and iron synthesis which takes into account the influence of spiral arms on amount of the above elements synthesized by both the supernovae Type II and prompt supernovae Ia. We solve this task without of any preliminary suppositions about the ratio among the portions of iron synthesized by the above sources.
The relative portion of iron synthesized by tardy supernovae Ia for the life-time of the Galaxy is $\sim$35 per cent (in the present ISM this portion is $\sim$50 per cent). Correspondingly, the total portion of iron supplied to the disc by supernovae Type II and prompt supernovae Ia is $\sim$65 per cent (in the present ISM this portion is $\sim$50 per cent).
The above result slightly depends on the adopted mass of oxygen and iron synthesized during one explosion of supernovae and the shape (bimodal or smooth) of the so-called Delay Time Distribution function.
The portions of iron mass distributed between the short-lived supernovae are usually as follows: depending on the ejected masses of oxygen or iron during one supernovae Type II event the relative portion of iron, supplied to the Galactic disc for its age, varies in the range 12 - 32 per cent (in the present ISM 9-25 per cent); the portion supplied by prompt supernovae Ia to the Galactic disc is 33 - 53 per cent (in ISM 26 - 42 per cent).

The new Cepheids do not add much information to the radial gradient, but provide a substantial increase in azimuthal coverage. We find no azimuthal dependence in abundance over an 80° angle from the galactic center in an annulus of 1 kpc depth centered on the Sun. A simple linear fit to the Cepheid data yields a gradient d[Fe/H]/dRG = -0.055 \pm 0.003 dex/kpc which is somewhat shallower than found from our previous, smaller Cepheid sample.

We present the results of a detailed spectroscopic study of the long period ($P=0.856$ days) RR Lyrae star, KP Cyg. We derived abundances of many chemical elements including the light species, iron-group elements and elements of the s-processes. Most RR Lyrae stars with periods longer than 0.7 days are metal-deficient objects. Surprisingly, our results show that KP Cyg is very metal rich ([Fe/H] $= +0.18\pm 0.23$). By comparison with a number of short period ($P=1\sim 6$ days), metal-rich CWB stars, we suggest that KP Cyg may be a very short period CWB star (BL Her star) rather than an RR Lyrae star. As seen in some CWB stars, KP Cyg shows strong excesses of carbon and nitrogen in its atmosphere. This indicates that the surface of KP Cyg has been polluted by material that has undergone helium burning (to enhance carbon) and proton capture (to transform carbon into nitrogen). We also note that UY CrB, whose period is 0.929 days, also shows an enhancement of C and N, and that two carbon cepheids of short period, V553 Cen and RT TrA, show similar excesses of carbon and nitrogen.

Included is Polaris, which is displaying unusual fluctuations in its growing light amplitude, and a short-period, double-mode Cepheid, HDE 344787, with an amplitude smaller than that of Polaris, along with a selection of other classical Cepheids in need of additional observations. The observations are being used to establish basic parameters for the Cepheids, for application to the Galactic calibration of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation as well as studies of Galactic structure.

Small-amplitude variability at a level of ΔV = 0.016+-0.002 is indicated, with a period of P=123.04+-0.06 d. A weaker second signal may be present at P=177.84+-0.18 with ΔV = 0.007+-0.002, likely corresponding to fundamental mode pulsation if the primary signal represents overtone pulsation (123.04/177.84 = 0.69). The star, with a spectroscopic reddening of E(B-V) = 1.02, is associated with heavily-reddened B-type stars in its immediate vicinity that appear to be outlying members of an anonymous young cluster centered ~10 arcmin to the west and 1661+-73 pc distant. The cluster has nuclear and coronal radii of r_n=3.5 arcmin and R_c=14 arcmin, respectively, while the parameters for HD 18391 derived from membership in the cluster with its outlying B stars are consistent with those implied by its Cepheid-like pulsation, provided that it follows the semi-period-luminosity relation expected of such objects. Its inferred luminosity as a cluster member is M_V=-7.76+-0.10, its age (9+-1)x10^6 years, and its evolutionary mass ~19 M_{\sun}. HD 18391 is not a classical Cepheid, yet it follows the Cepheid period-luminosity relation closely, much like another Cepheid impostor, V810 Cen.

Extremely high precision for the inferred effective temperatures (10-40 K) is achieved by using the line-depth ratio method. The new data are combined with atmospheric values for 164 classical Cepheids, observed at 675 different pulsation phases, taken from our previously published studies. The derived values are correlated with unreddened B-V colours compiled from the literature for the investigated stars in order to obtain an empirical relationship of the form: (B-V)o = 57.984 - 10.3587(log Teff)^2 + 1.67572(log Teff)^3 - 3.356(log (g)) + 0.0321(Vt) + 0.2615[Fe/H] + 0.8833((log (g))(log Teff)). The expression is used to estimate colour excesses E(B-V) for individual supergiants and classical Cepheids, with a precision of +-0.05 mag. for supergiants and Cepheids with n=1-2 spectra, reaching +-0.025 mag. for Cepheids with n>2 spectra, matching uncertainties for the most sophisticated photometric techniques. The reddening scale is also a close match to the system of space reddenings for Cepheids. The application range is for spectral types F0--K0 and luminosity classes I and II.

One part of this sample consists of local giants, within 100 pc, with atmospheric parameters either estimated from our spectroscopic observations at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio, or retrieved from the literature. The other part of the sample includes 523 distant stars, which we have estimated atmospheric parameters from high resolution but low signal-to-noise Echelle spectra. This new sample is kinematically unbiased, with well-defined boundaries in magnitude and colours. We revisit the basic properties of the Galactic thin disk as traced by clump giants. We find the metallicity distribution to be different from that of dwarfs, with less metal-rich stars. We find evidence for a vertical metallicity gradient of -0.31 dex/kpc and for a transition at 4-5 Gyr in both the metallicity and velocities. The age - metallicity relation (AMR), which exhibits a very low dispersion, increases smoothly from 10 to 4 Gyr, with a steeper increase for younger stars. The age-velocity relation (AVR) is characterized by the saturation of the V and W dispersions at 5 Gyr, and continuous heating in U.

The aim of this paper is to provide the fundamental parameters and abundances for a large sample of local clump giants with a high accuracy. The selection of clump stars for the sample group was made applying a color - absolute magnitude window to nearby Hipparcos stars. The abundances of carbon and nitrogen were obtained from molecular synthetic spectrum, the Mg and Na abundances were derived using the non-LTE approximation. The "classical" models of stellar evolution without atomic diffusion and rotation-induced mixing were employed. The atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H], Vt) and Li, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca and Ni abundances in 177 clump giants of the Galactic disc were determined. The underabundance of carbon, overabundance of nitrogen and "normal" abundance of oxygen were detected. A small sodium overabundance was found. A possibility of a selection of the clump giants based on their chemical composition and the evolutionary tracks was explored. The theoretical predictions based on the classical stellar evolution models are in good agreement with the observed surface variations of the carbon and nitrogen just after the first dredge-up episode. The giants show the same behavior of the dependencies of O, Mg, Ca, Si (alpha-elements) and Ni (iron-peak element) abundances vs. [Fe/H] as dwarfs do. This allows one to use such abundance ratios to study the chemical and dynamical evolution of the Galaxy.

We used red clump stars to measure the surface mass density of the Galactic disk in the solar neighbourhood. High resolution spectra of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the ELODIE spectrograph at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars, and nearby Hipparcos counterparts were also observed. We determined their distances, velocities, and metallicities to measure the gravitational force law perpendicular to the Galactic plane. As in most previous studies, we applied one-parameter models of the vertical gravitational potential. We obtained a disk surface mass density within 1.1kpc of the Galactic plane, Sigma_{1.1kpc}=64+/-5 Msun_pc^{-2}, with an excellent formal accuracy, however we found that such one-parameter models can underestimate the real uncertainties. Applying two-parameter models, we derived more realistic estimates of the total surface mass density within 800pc from the Galactic plane, Sigma_{0.8kpc}=57-66 Msun pc^{-2}, and within 1.1kpc, Sigma{1.1kpc}=57-79 Msun pc^{-2}. This can be compared to literature estimates of \sim40 Msun pc^{-2} in stars and to 13 Msun pc^{-2} in the less accurately measured ISM contribution. We conclude that there is no evidence of large amounts of dark matter in the disk and, furthermore, that the dark matter halo is round or not vey much flattened.
A by-product of this study is the determination of the half period of oscillation by the Sun through the Galactic plane, 42+/-2Myr, which cannot be related to the possible period of large terrestrial impact craters \sim 33-37Myr.

This gap coincides with a jump in the microturbulent velocity Vt and the well-known Li depression near 5600 K in field dwarfs and open clusters. As the principal cause of the observed discontinuities in stellar properties we propose the penetration of the convective zone into the inner layers of stars slightly less massive than the Sun and related to it, a change in the temperature gradient.

We have performed the detailed analysis of 174 high-resolution spectra of FGK dwarfs obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Abundances of Fe, Si and Ni have been determined from equivalent widths under LTE approximation, whereas abundances of Mg have been determined under NLTE approximation using equivalent widths of 4 lines and profiles of 5 lines. Spatial velocities with an accuracy better than 1 km/s, as well as orbits, have been computed for all stars. They have been used to define 2 subsamples kinematically representative of the thin disk and the thick disk in order to highlight their respective properties. A transition occurs at [Fe/H]=-0.3. Stars more metal-rich than this value have a flat distribution with Zmax<1 kpc and sigma_W<20 km/s, and a narrow distribution of [alpha/Fe]. There exist stars in this metallicity regime which cannot belong to the thin disk because of their excentric orbits, neither to the thick disk because of their low scale height. Several thin disk stars are identified down to [Fe/H]=-0.80. Their Mg enrichment is lower than thick disk stars with the same metallicity. We confirm from a larger sample the results of Feltzing et al (2003) and Bensby et al (2003) showing a decrease of [alpha/Fe] with [Fe/H] in the thick disk interpreted as the signature of the SNIa which have progressively enriched the ISM with iron. However our data suggest that the star formation in the thick disk stopped when the enrichment was [Fe/H]=-0.30, [Mg/Fe]=+0.20, [Si/Fe]=+0.17. A vertical gradient in [alpha/Fe] may exist in the thick disk but should be confirmed with a larger sample. Finally we have identified 2 new candidates of the HR1614 moving group.

Line depth ratios measured on high resolution (R=42000), high S/N echelle spectra are used for the determination of precise effective temperatures of 181 F,G,K Main Sequence stars with about solar metallicity (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5). A set of 105 relations is obtained which rely Teff on ratios of the strengths of lines with high and low excitation potentials, calibrated against previously published precise (1%) temperature estimates. The application range of the calibrations is 4000--6150 K (F8V--K7V). The internal error of a single calibration is less than 100 K, while the combination of all calibrations for a spectrum of S/N=100 reduces uncertainty to only 5-10 K, and for S/N=200 or higher, to better than 5 K. The zero point of the temperature scale is directly defined from reflection spectra of the Sun with an uncertainty about 1 K. The application of this method to investigation of the planet host stars properties is discussed.
