Analyses for the NICER data indicate that there is no significant variation of the compact star radii within the mass range of 1.4 to 2.0 solar masses. Yamamoto et al. [Phys. Rev. C 108, 035811 (2023)] concluded recently that ``this feature cannot be reproduced by the hadronic matter due to the softening of the equation of state (EoS) by hyperon mixing, suggesting the possible existence of quark phases in neutron-star interiors.'' Using a collection of 162 purely nucleonic, hyperonic, and quarkish EoSs from CompOSE database and some other works, we verify that hyperons indeed lead to a significant difference in radii of stars of 1.4 and 2.0 solar masses, which diminishes in the presence of quarks. We compare the shapes of the mass-radius curves and show that hyperons and quarks in the neutron star cores prefer a particular curve shape with backbending. It is argued that the shape {is controlled by the density dependence} of the nuclear symmetry energy. We draw attention to the existence of a class of purely hadronic relativistic mean-field EoSs with scalar-field dependent hadron masses and coupling constants that satisfy the known constraints on the EoSs including the analyses of the new NICER data and the above requirement of no significant variation of the neutron star radii.

We study self-consistent approximations such as the $Φ$-derivable and virial approaches to dilute strongly interacting systems in equilibrium. We consider a system of non-relativistic fermions of one kind interacting via a pair potential Thermodynamical quantities are expressed in terms of various spectral functions. We review the $Φ$ derivable approximation scheme demonstrating the exact conservation of the Noether and the Botermans-Malfliet fermion number densities, and then for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams we show the coincidence of these two number densities. As examples of test pair potentials, we consider the Yukawa central nucleon-nucleon potentials within Walecka, CD Bonn, and Reid parameterizations, and the corresponding classical Lennard-Jones potentials. Expressions for the second and third virial coefficients are derived and analyzed for $Φ$ described by the tadpole and sandwich diagrams. Next, we focus on the virial approach to the equation of state. Classical, semiclassical, and purely quantum approaches are studied in detail. Then, different extrapolations of the virial equation of state are considered including the van~der~Waals form and excluded-volume models. We derive the expression for the second virial coefficient using the effective range approximation for the scattering amplitude and compare the result with the purely quantum result using the experimental phase shifts. Attention is focused on the problem of anomalously large value of the nucleon-nucleon scattering length appearing due to the presence of the quasi-bound state in nucleon-nucleon scattering, which can be destroyed in the matter because of the action of the Pauli blocking. We present results for the second virial coefficient subtracting this term. We discuss the validity of such a procedure to describe the equation of state of the nuclear matter in the virial limit.

Presence of hyperons in neutron stars leads to a softening of the EoS that results in a decrease of the maximum neutron-star mass below the measured values of masses for PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 pulsars if one exploits ordinary relativistic mean-field (RMF) models (hyperon puzzle). However, within an RMF EoS with a sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and coupling constants, the maximum neutron-star mass remains above $2M_{\odot}$ even when hyperons are included. Also, other important constraints on the equation of state, e.g. the flow constraint from heavy-ion collisions are to be fulfilled. We demonstrate how a satisfactory explanation of all existing observational data for the temperature-age relation is reached within the "nuclear medium cooling" scenario with a relativistic-mean-field EoS with a sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and coupling constants including hyperons.

We extend relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson-baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar field $σ$, including hyperons and $Δ(1232)$ baryons, to incorporate a possibility of the charged $ρ$ meson condensation in neutron star matter. The influence of the $ρ^-$ condensation on the equation of state proves to be strongly model dependent. In our models of one type (KVORcut-based ones) the $ρ^-$ condensation arises by a second-order phase transition above a critical density and the maximum value of the neutron star mass diminishes only slightly. The matter composition changes more significantly. In our models of other type (MKVOR*-based ones), if the system is considered at fixed density, the $ρ^-$ condensation arises by a second-order phase transition at the baryon density $n=n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm II)}$ and at a slightly higher density $n=n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm I)}$ there occurs a first-order phase transition. In a neutron star matter starting with a density $n<n_{c,ρ}^{(\rm II)}$ there appears a region of a mixed phase, or the system is described by Maxwell construction, that results in a substantial decrease of the value of the maximum neutron star mass. Nevertheless in the models under consideration the observational constraint on the maximum neutron star mass is fulfilled. Besides, in MKVOR*-based models the appearance of the $ρ^-$ condensate is accompanied by a strong rearrangement of the matter composition. Dependence of the results on a choice of the $ρ$ meson scaling functions for the effective $ρ$ meson mass and coupling constants is also investigated.

We propose the existence of a lower bound on the energy of pure neutron matter (PNM) on the basis of unitary-gas considerations. We discuss its justification from experimental studies of cold atoms as well as from theoretical studies of neutron matter. We demonstrate that this bound results in limits to the density-dependent symmetry energy, which is the difference between the energies of symmetric nuclear matter and PNM. In particular, this bound leads to a lower limit to the volume symmetry energy parameter $S_0$. In addition, for assumed values of $S_0$ above this minimum, this bound implies both upper and lower limits to the symmetry energy slope parameter $L$, which describes the lowest-order density dependence of the symmetry energy. A lower bound on the neutron-matter incompressibility is also obtained. These bounds are found to be consistent with both recent calculations of the energies of PNM and constraints from nuclear experiments. Our results are significant because several equations of state that are currently used in astrophysical simulations of supernovae and neutron star mergers, as well as in nuclear physics simulations of heavy-ion collisions, have symmetry energy parameters that violate these bounds. Furthermore, below the nuclear saturation density, the bound on neutron-matter energies leads to a lower limit to the density-dependent symmetry energy, which leads to upper limits to the nuclear surface symmetry parameter and the neutron-star crust-core boundary. We also obtain a lower limit to the neutron-skin thicknesses of neutron-rich nuclei. Above the nuclear saturation density, the bound on neutron-matter energies also leads to an upper limit to the symmetry energy, with implications for neutron-star cooling via the direct Urca process.

With an increase of the baryon density the filling of Fermi seas of hyperons and $Δ$ isobars becomes possible. Their inclusion into standard relativistic mean-field models results in a strong softening of the equation of state and a lowering of the maximum neutron star mass below the measured values. We extend a relativistic mean-field model with scaled hadron masses and coupling constants developed in our previous works and take into account now not only hyperons but also the $Δ$ isobars. We analyze available empirical information to put constraints on coupling constants of $Δ$s to mesonic mean fields. We demonstrate that if the effective nucleon mass stops to decrease with a density increase at densities $n>n_*>n_0$, where $n_0$ is the nuclear saturation density, the equation of state stiffens for these densities and the limiting neutron star mass increases. The stabilization of the nucleon mass can be realised if in the equation of motion for the scalar mean-field there appear a term sharply varying in a narrow vicinity of the field value corresponding to the density $n_*$. We show several possible realizations of this mechanism getting sufficiently stiff equations of state. The appearance of hyperons in dense neutron star interiors is accounted for. The obtained equations of state remain sufficiently stiff if the reduction of the $φ$ meson mass is incorporated. Thereby, the hyperon puzzle can be resolved.

An equation of state of cold nuclear matter with an arbitrary isotopic composition is studied within a relativistic mean-field approach with hadron masses and coupling constants depending self-consistently on the scalar mean-field. All hadron masses decrease universally with the scalar field growth, whereas meson-nucleon coupling constants can vary differently. More specifically we focus on two modifications of the KVOR model studied previously. One extension of the model (KVORcut) demonstrates that the equation of state stiffens if the increase of the scalar-field magnitude with the density is bounded from above at some value for baryon densities above the saturation nuclear density. This can be realized if the nucleon vector-meson coupling constant changes rapidly as a function of the scalar field slightly above the desired value. The other version of the model (MKVOR) utilizes a smaller value of the nucleon effective mass at the nuclear saturation density and a saturation of the scalar field in the isospin asymmetric matter induced by a strong variation of the nucleon isovector-meson coupling constant as function of the scalar field. A possibility of hyperonization of the matter in neutron star interiors is incorporated. Our equations of state fulfill majority of known empirical constraints including the pressure-density constraint from heavy-ion collisions, direct Urca constraint, gravitational-baryon mass constraint for the pulsar J0737-3039B, and the constraint on the maximum mass of the neutron stars.

We study relativistic mean-field (RMF) models including nucleons interacting with scalar, vector and iso-vector mean fields and self- and cross- mean-field interaction terms. Usually, in such a models the magnitude of the scalar field increases monotonically with the nucleon density, and the nucleon effective mass decreases. We demonstrate that the latter quantity stops to decrease and the equation of state stiffens, provided the mean-field self-interaction potential rises sharply in a narrow vicinity of the values of mean fields corresponding to nucleon densities $n> n_{*}>n_0$, where $n_0$ is the nuclear saturation density. As the result the limiting neutron star mass increases. This procedure offers a simple way to stiffen the equation of state at densities above $n_{*}$ without altering it at densities $n\le n_{0}$. The developed scheme allows an application to neutron stars of the RMF models, which are well fitted to finite nuclei but do not fulfill the experimental constraint on the limiting neutron star mass. The exemplary application of the method to the well-known FSUGold model allows us to increase the limiting neutron star mass from $1.72~M_\odot$ to $M \geq 2.01~M_\odot$.

Depending on the sign of the interaction there arises either the new exciton collective mode below the pair-breaking threshold or the diffusive excitation mode above the threshold. The Landau parameters which control the interaction strength are evaluated for various systems: the dilute fermion gases, degenerate electron liquid, metals, atomic nuclei and neutron matter. The interaction removes also the square-root singularity in the phase space of pair breaking processes. The Larkin-Migdal approach to a cold superfluid Fermi liquid is generalized for a non-equilibrium system. The Schwinger-Keldysh diagram technique is applied. The developed formalism is applicable to the pairing in the states with arbitrary angular momenta. We consider the white body radiation problem by calculating probabilities of different direct reactions from a piece of a fermion superfluid. The closed diagram technique is formulated in terms of the full Green's functions for systems with the pairing correlation. The cutting rules are used to classify the diagrams representing one-nucleon, two-nucleon, etc. processes in the matter. The important role of multi-piece diagrams for the vector-current conservation is demonstrated. In the case of equilibrated systems, dealing with dressed Green's functions, we demonstrate correspondence between calculations in the Schwinger-Kadanoff-Baym-Keldysh formalism and the ordinary Matsubara technique. As an example we consider neutrino radiation from the neutron pair breaking and formation processes in case of a singlet pairing. Necessary correlation effects are included. The in-medium renormalization of normal and anomalous vertices is performed.

Neutrino emission in processes of breaking and formation of neutron and proton Cooper pairs is calculated within the Larkin-Migdal-Leggett approach for a superfluid Fermi liquid. We demonstrate explicitly that the Fermi-liquid renormalization respects the Ward identity and assures the weak vector current conservation. The systematic expansion of the emissivities for small temperatures and nucleon Fermi velocity, v_{F,i}, i=n,p, is performed. Both neutron and proton processes are mainly controlled by the axial-vector current contributions, which are not strongly changed in the superfluid matter. Thus, compared to earlier calculations the total emissivity of processes on neutrons paired in the 1S_0 state is suppressed by a factor ~(0.9-1.2) v_{F,n}^2. A similar suppression factor (~v_{F,p}^2) arises for processes on protons.

A new scheme for testing nuclear matter equations of state (EsoS) at high densities using constraints from neutron star phenomenology and a flow data analysis of heavy-ion collisions is suggested. An acceptable EoS shall not allow the direct Urca process to occur in neutron stars with masses below $1.5~M_{\odot}$, and also shall not contradict flow and kaon production data of heavy-ion collisions. Compact star constraints include the mass measurements of 2.1 +/- 0.2 M_sun (1 sigma level) for PSR J0751+1807, of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M_sun from the innermost stable circular orbit for 4U 1636-536, the baryon mass - gravitational mass relationships from Pulsar B in J0737-3039 and the mass-radius relationships from quasiperiodic brightness oscillations in 4U 0614+09 and from the thermal emission of RX J1856-3754. This scheme is applied to a set of relativistic EsoS constrained otherwise from nuclear matter saturation properties with the result that no EoS can satisfy all constraints simultaneously, but those with density-dependent masses and coupling constants appear most promising.

A QCD-motivated dynamical-quasiparticle model with parameters adjusted to reproduce the lattice-QCD equation of state is extrapolated from region of high temperatures and moderate baryonic densities to the domain of high baryonic densities and zero temperature. The resulting equation of state matched with realistic hadronic equations of state predicts a phase transition into the quark phase at higher densities than those reachable in neutron star interiors. This excludes the possibility of the existence of hybrid (hadron-quark) stars. Pure quark stars are possible and have low masses, small radii and very high central densities. Similar results are obtained for a simple bag model with massive quarks, fitted to reproduce the same lattice results. Self-bound quark matter is also excluded within these models. Uncertainties in the present extrapolation re discussed. Comparison with standard bag models is made.

Thereby the large variety of scaling functions for masses and couplings can be reduced to a restricted set of functions with a constrained dependence on a scalar field. We show how by choosing properly the latter scaling functions one may stiffen or soften the equation of state at high densities and simultaneously increase the threshold density for the direct Urca process without any change of the description of nuclear matter close to the saturation density. The stiffening of the equation of state might be motivated by recent neutron star mass measurements, whereas the increase of the threshold density for the direct Urca process is required by the analysis of neutron star cooling data. We demonstrate that if a rho meson is included in a mean-field model as a non-Abelian gauge boson, then there is a possibility for a charged rho-meson condensation in dense nuclear matter. We show that such a novel phase can be realized in neutron star interiors already for sufficiently low densities, typically $\sim 3÷4 n_0$, where $n_0$ is the nuclear saturation density. In the framework of the relativistic mean field model the new phase arises in a second-order phase transition. The appearance of a $ρ^-$ condensate significantly alters the proton fraction in a neutron star but changes moderately the equation of state. The neutrino emissivity of the processes involving a $ρ^-$ meson condensate is estimated.

Kaon polarization operator in dense baryonic matter of arbitrary isotopic composition is calculated including s- and p-wave kaon-baryon interactions. The regular part of the polarization operator is extracted from the realistic kaon-nucleon interaction based on the chiral and 1/N_c expansion. Contributions of the Lambda(1116), Sigma(1195), Sigma*(1385) resonances are taken explicitly into account in the pole and regular terms with inclusion of mean-field potentials. The baryon-baryon correlations are incorporated and fluctuation contributions are estimated. Results are applied for K- in neutron star matter. Within our model a second-order phase transition to the s-wave K- condensate state occurs at $rho_c \gsim 4 ρ_0$ once the baryon-baryon correlations are included. We show that the second-order phase transition to the p-wave $K^-$ condensate state may occur at densities $ρ_c \sim 3÷5 ρ_0$ in dependence on the parameter choice. We demonstrate that a first-order phase transition to a proton-enriched (approximately isospin-symmetric) nucleon matter with a p-wave K- condensate can occur at smaller densities, $ρ\lsim 2 ρ_0$. The transition is accompanied by the suppression of hyperon concentrations.

Abstract:
Production of negative strangeness in reactions of inelastic anti-neutrino scattering on a nucleus provides information on the modification of strange degrees of freedom in nuclear matter. Production of negative strangeness in reactions of inelastic anti-neutrino scattering on a nucleus provides information on the modification of strange degrees of freedom in nuclear matter. We calculate cross-sections of the reaction channels $\barν_{e(μ)}\to e^+(μ^+) + K^{-}$ and $\barν_{e(μ)} + p \to \Lb + e^+(μ^+)$ and investigate their sensitivity to the medium effects. In particular, we consider effects induced by the presence of a low-energy excitation mode in the $K^-$ spectrum, associated with the correlated $Λ$-particle and proton-hole states, and the renormalization of the weak interaction in medium. In order to avoid double counting, various contributions to anti-neutrino scattering are classified with the help of the optical theorem, formulated within the non-equilibrium Green's function technique.

We consider massive photon decay reactions via intermediate states of electron-electron-holes and proton-proton-holes into neutrino-antineutrino pairs in the course of neutron star cooling. These reactions may become operative in hot neutron stars in the region of proton pairing where the photon due to the Higgs-Meissner effect acquires an effective mass $m_γ$ that is small compared to the corresponding plasma frequency. The contribution of these reactions to neutrino emissivity is calculated; it varies with the temperature and the photon mass as $T^{3/2}m_γ^{7/2} e^{-m_γ/T}$ for $T < m_γ$. Estimates show that these processes appear as extra efficient cooling channels of neutron stars at temperatures $T \simeq (10^9-10^{10})$ K.
