We present the results of a systematic search of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) 2-min cadence data for new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars observed during the Cycle 2 phase of its mission. We find seven new roAp stars previously unreported as such and present the analysis of a further 25 roAp stars that are already known. Three of the new stars show multiperiodic pulsations, while all new members are rotationally variable stars, leading to almost 70 per cent (22) of the roAp stars presented being $α^2$ CVn-type variable stars. We show that targeted observations of known chemically peculiar stars are likely to overlook many new roAp stars, and demonstrate that multi-epoch observations are necessary to see pulsational behaviour changes. We find a lack of roAp stars close to the blue edge of the theoretical roAp instability strip, and reaffirm that mode instability is observed more frequently with precise, space-based observations. In addition to the Cycle 2 observations, we analyse TESS data for all known roAp stars. This amounts to 18 further roAp stars observed by TESS. Finally, we list six known roAp stars that TESS is yet to observe. We deduce that the incidence of roAp stars amongst the Ap star population is just 5.5 per cent, raising fundamental questions about the conditions required to excite pulsations in Ap stars. This work, coupled with our previous work on roAp stars in Cycle 1 observations, presents the most comprehensive, homogeneous study of the roAp stars in the TESS nominal mission, with a collection of 112 confirmed roAp stars in total.

We report about HD 213258, an Ap star that we recently identified as presenting a unique combination of rare, remarkable properties. Our study of this star is based on ESPaDOnS Stokes I and V data obtained at 7 epochs spanning a time interval slightly shorter than 2 years, on TESS data, and on radial velocity measurements from the CORAVEL data base. We confirm that HD 213258 is definitely an Ap star. We found that, in its spectrum, the Fe II λ6149.2 Å line is resolved into its two magnetically split components. The mean magnetic field modulus of HD 213258, <B> ~ 3.8 kG does not show significant variations over ~2 years. Comparing our mean longitudinal field determinations with a couple of measurements from the literature, we show that the stellar rotation period must likely be of the order of 50 years, with a reversal of the field polarity. Moreover, HD 213258 is a rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star, in which high overtone pulsations with a period of 7.58 min are detected. Finally, we confirm that HD 213258 has a mean radial velocity exceeding (in absolute value) that of at least 99% of the Ap stars. The radial velocity shows low amplitude variations, which suggests that the star is a single-line spectroscopic binary. It is also a known astrometric binary. While its orbital elements remain to be determined, its orbital period likely is one of the shortest known for a binary roAp star. Its secondary is close to the borderline between stellar and substellar objects. There is a significant probability that it may be a brown dwarf. While most of the above-mentioned properties, taken in isolation, are observed in a small fraction of the whole population of Ap stars, the probability that a single star possesses all of them is extremely low. This makes HD 213258 an exceptionally interesting object that deserves to be studied in detail in the future.

Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has provided stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We have used TESS data to study rotational modulation in the light curves of a sample of chemically peculiar stars with measured large-scale magnetic fields (mCP stars). In general, mCP stars show inhomogeneous distributions of elements in their atmospheres that lead to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations commensurate with the rotational period. We analyzed the available TESS data from 50 sectors for eight targets after post-processing them in order to minimize systematic instrumental trends. Analysis of the light curves allowed us to determine rotational periods for all eight of our targets. For each star, we provide a phase diagram calculated using the derived period from the light curves and from the available measurements of the disk-averaged longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$. In most cases, the phased light curve and $\langle B_{\rm z}\rangle$ measurements show consistent variability. Using our rotation periods, and global stellar parameters derived from fitting Balmer line profiles, and from Geneva and Strömgren-Crawford photometry, we determined the equatorial rotational velocities and calculated the respective critical rotational fractions $v_{\rm eq}/v_{\rm crit}$. We have shown from our sample that the critical rotational fraction decreases with stellar age, at a rate consistent with the magnetic braking observed in the larger population of mCP stars.

Numerous magnetic hot stars exhibit gyrosynchrotron radio emission. The source electrons were previously thought to be accelerated to relativistic velocities in the current sheet formed in the middle magnetosphere by the wind opening magnetic field lines. However, a lack of dependence of radio luminosity on the wind power, and a strong dependence on rotation, has recently challenged this paradigm. We have collected all radio measurements of magnetic early-type stars available in the literature. When constraints on the magnetic field and/or the rotational period are not available, we have determined these using previously unpublished spectropolarimetric and photometric data. The result is the largest sample of magnetic stars with radio observations that has yet been analyzed: 131 stars with rotational and magnetic constraints, of which 50 are radio-bright. We confirm an obvious dependence of gyrosynchrotron radiation on rotation, and furthermore find that accounting for rotation neatly separates stars with and without detected radio emission. There is a close correlation between H$α$ emission strength and radio luminosity. These factors suggest that radio emission may be explained by the same mechanism responsible for H$α$ emission from centrifugal magnetospheres, i.e. centrifugal breakout (CBO), however, whereas the H$α$-emitting magnetosphere probes the cool plasma before breakout, radio emission is a consequence of electrons accelerated in centrifugally-driven magnetic reconnection.

Mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are late-B upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars distinguished by large overabundances of heavy elements, slow rotation, and frequent membership in close binary systems. These stars lack strong magnetic fields typical of magnetic Bp stars but occasionally exhibit non-uniform surface distributions of chemical elements. The physical origin and the extent of this spot formation phenomenon remains unknown. Here we use 2-min cadence light curves of 64 HgMn stars observed by the TESS satellite during the first two years of its operation to investigate the incidence of rotational modulation and pulsations among HgMn stars. We found rotational variability with amplitudes of 0.1-3 mmag in 84 per cent of the targets, indicating ubiquitous presence of starspots on HgMn-star surfaces. Rotational period measurements reveal six fast-rotating stars with periods below 1.2 d, including one ultra-fast rotator (HD 14228) with a 0.34 d period. We also identify several HgMn stars showing multi-periodic g-mode pulsations, tidally induced variation and eclipses in binary systems.

Eclipsing binary stars are rare and extremely valuable astrophysical laboratories that make possible precise determination of fundamental stellar parameters. Investigation of early-type chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binaries provides important information for understanding the origin and evolutionary context of their anomalous surface chemistry. In this study we discuss observations of eclipse variability in six mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars monitored by the TESS satellite. These discoveries double the number of known eclipsing HgMn stars and yield several interesting objects requiring further study. In particular, we confirm eclipses in HD 72208, thereby establishing this object as the longest-period eclipsing HgMn star. Among five other eclipsing binaries, reported here for the first time, HD 36892 and HD 53004 stand out as eccentric systems showing heartbeat variability in addition to eclipses. The latter object has the highest eccentricity among eclipsing HgMn stars and also exhibits tidally induced oscillations. Finally, we find evidence that HD 55776 may be orbited by a white dwarf companion.

We identify 12 new roAp stars. Amongst these stars we discover the roAp star with the longest pulsation period, another with the shortest rotation period, and six with multiperiodic variability. In addition to these new roAp stars, we present an analysis of 44 known roAp stars observed by TESS during Cycle 1, providing the first high-precision and homogeneous sample of a significant fraction of the known roAp stars. The TESS observations have shown that almost 60 per cent (33) of our sample of stars are multiperiodic, providing excellent cases to test models of roAp pulsations, and from which the most rewarding asteroseismic results can be gleaned. We report four cases of the occurrence of rotationally split frequency multiplets that imply different mode geometries for the same degree modes in the same star. This provides a conundrum in applying the oblique pulsator model to the roAp stars. Finally, we report the discovery of non-linear mode interactions in $α$ Cir (TIC 402546736, HD 128898) around the harmonic of the principal mode -- this is only the second case of such a phenomenon.

High resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the strongly magnetic, super-slowly rotating rapidly oscillating Ap star HD166473 are used to investigate the implications of the presence of a variable strong magnetic field on the vertical and surface horizontal distribution of various chemical elements. The analysis of the calculated LSD Stokes $I$ and $V$ profiles confirms the previously reported detection of non-uniform horizontal surface distribution of several chemical elements. To test the vertical abundance stratification of iron peak and rare earth elements, magnetic field measurements were carried out using spectral lines of these elements belonging to neutral and ionised stages. We find clear indication of the existence of a relation between the magnetic field strength and its orientation and vertical element stratification: magnetic field values obtained for elements in different stages close to the magnetic equator are rather similar whereas the dispersion in field strengths is remarkably large in the regions close to magnetic field poles. At the phases of negative and positive extrema the mean longitudinal field strength determined from the analysis of the REE lines is usually stronger than when using Fe and Cr. The strongest mean longitudinal magnetic field, up to $-$4160$\pm$226 G, is detected using the La II line list at the negative extremum, followed by the measurements using the Pr III lines with $\langle B_z \rangle$=$-$3740$\pm$343 G and the Ce II lines with $\langle B_z \rangle$=$-$3372$\pm$247 G. The strongest mean longitudinal magnetic field of positive polarity, up to 3584$\pm$354 G is detected using the Pr III lines, followed by the measurement $\langle B_z \rangle$=2517$\pm$249 G using the Ce II lines.

Since the end of 2018, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) provides high-quality space data on stellar photometry to the astronomical community. We present the results of an analysis of TESS photometric data for known slowly rotating magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars. In general, mCP stars show an inhomogeneous distribution of elements in their stellar atmospheres that leads to spectroscopic (line profile) and photometric (light curve) variations over the rotation period. In the frame of the oblique magnetic rotator (OMR) model, patches of enhanced chemical abundance on the stellar surface reveal the frequency of stellar rotation. Using this approach, we have compiled a list of slowly rotating mCP stars with rotation periods longer than two days from the analysis of the photometric data provided by TESS for the first eight sectors of observations. Slowly rotating mCP stars usually possess a hydrodynamically stable stellar atmosphere where a magnetic field can amplify the process of atomic diffusion and leads to the horizontal and vertical stratification of chemical abundances.

A portion of the upper main-sequence stars, called chemically peculiar (CP) stars, show significant abundance anomalies mainly due to atomic diffusion of chemical elements within the stellar atmospheres of these stars. Slowly rotating CP stars may have hydrodynamically stable atmospheres where the competition between the gravitational and radiative forces leads to atomic diffusion that can be responsible for the abundance peculiarities observed in CP stars. Recently, project VeSElkA (Vertical Stratification of Element Abundances) was initiated with the aim to detect and study the vertical stratification of element abundances in the atmospheres of CP stars. Some results from abundance analysis of several slowly rotating (V$\sin{i}$< 40 km/s) CP stars observed recently with ESPaDOnS are presented here. Signatures of vertical abundance stratification for several chemical elements have been found in the stellar atmospheres of HD~22920, HD~41076, HD~95608, HD~116235, HD~148330 and HD~157087.

HD~63401 is known magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) star that shows a slow rotation and probably possesses a hydrodynamically stable stellar atmosphere. In the latter case the atomic diffusion mechanism enforced by the magnetic field can lead to stratification of elemental abundance with optical depth. HD~63401 was recently observed with the space telescope \textit{TESS}, and its light curve shows distinct variability, which is usually detected in the $α^2$ CVn type stars. Based on the analysis of the light curve we derived its rotational period $P$ = 2.414 $\pm$ 0.018~d and studied variability of the effective temperature with this period. The estimates of the effective temperature and surface gravity were obtained from the best fit of Balmer line profiles observed in seven high-resolution spectra acquired with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS for HD~63401. The same spectra were used to perform an abundance analysis employing the modified ZEEMAN2 code. We have found that He, C, P, V, Y, and Dy are in deficit in stellar atmosphere of HD~63401, while Na, Al, Si, Fe, Zn, and Sr are significantly overabundant.

How magnetic fields contribute to the differentiation of the rotation rates of the Ap stars and affect the occurrence of non-radial pulsation in some of them are important open questions. Valuable insight can be gained into these questions by studying some of the most extreme examples of the processes at play. The super-slowly rotating rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 166473 is such an example. We performed the first accurate determination of its rotation period, (3836 +/- 30)d, from the analysis of 56 measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus <B> based on high-resolution spectra acquired between 1992 and 2019 at various observatories and with various instrumental configurations. We complemented this analysis with the consideration of an inhomogeneous set of 21 determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field <B_z> spanning the same time interval. This makes HD 166473 one of only four Ap stars with a period longer than 10 years for which magnetic field measurements have been obtained over more than a full cycle. The variation curves of <B> and of <B_z> are well approximated by cosine waves. The magnetic field of HD 166473 only seems to deviate slightly from axisymmetry, but it definitely involves a considerable non-dipolar component. Among the stars with rotation periods longer than 1000 d for which magnetic field measurements with full phase coverage are available, HD 166473 has the strongest field. Its magnetic field is also one of the strongest known among roAp stars. Overall, the magnetic properties of HD 166473 do not seem fundamentally distinct from those of the faster-rotating Ap stars. However, considering as a group the eight Ap stars that have accuractely determined periods longer than 1000 d and whose magnetic variations have been characterised over a full cycle suggests that the angles between their magnetic and rotation axes tend to be systematically large.

These data can be used to probe the varying column density of magnetospheric plasma along the line of sight for OB stars, thus improving our understanding of the interaction between surface magnetic fields and massive star winds. They can also be used to map out the brightness inhomogeneities present on the surfaces of Ap/Bp stars, informing present models of atomic diffusion in their atmospheres. The new photometric data on pulsating Ap star HD~27463 obtained recently with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\textit{TESS}) are analysed to search for variability. Our analysis shows that HD~27463 exhibits two types of photometric variability. The low frequency variability with the period $P$ =~2.834274 $\pm$ 0.000008 d can be explained in terms of axial stellar rotation assuming the oblique magnetic rotator model and presence of surface abundance/brightness spots, while the detected high-frequency variations are characteristics of $δ$~Scuti pulsations. From the analysis of Balmer line profiles visible in two FEROS spectra of HD~27463 we have derived its effective temperature and surface gravity, finding values that are close to those published for this star in the \textit{TESS} Input Catalogue (TIC). Knowing the rotation period and the v$\sin{i}$ value estimated from the fitting of Balmer line profiles we found that the rotational axis is inclined to the line of sight with an angle of $i=33\pm8°$. Our best-fitting model of the observed pulsation modes results in an overshoot parameter value $f_{ov} = 0.014$ and values of global stellar parameters that are in good agreement with the data reported in the TIC and with the data derived from fitting Balmer line profiles. This model indicates an age of 5.0 $\pm$~0.4 $\times 10^8$~yrs, which corresponds to a core hydrogen fraction of 0.33.

Recently, high-precision optical 2~min cadence light curves obtained with \emph{TESS} for targets located in the mission's defined first four sectors have been released. The majority of these high-cadence and high-precision measurements currently span $\sim28\,{\rm d}$, thereby allowing periodic variability occurring on timescales $\lesssim14\,{\rm d}$ to potentially be detected. Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) A-type stars are well known to exhibit rotationally modulated photometric variability that is produced by inhomogeneous chemical abundance distributions in their atmospheres. While mCP stars typically exhibit rotation periods that are significantly longer than those of non-mCP stars, both populations exhibit typical periods $\lesssim10\,{\rm d}$; therefore, the early \emph{TESS} releases are suitable for searching for rotational modulation of the light curves of both mCP and non-mCP stars. We present the results of our search for A-type stars that exhibit variability in their \emph{TESS} light curves that is consistent with rotational modulation based on the first two data releases obtained from sectors 1 to 4. Our search yielded $134$ high-probability candidate rotational variables -- $60$ of which have not been previously reported. Approximately half of these stars are identified in the literature as Ap (mCP) stars. Comparisons between the subsample of high-probability candidate rotationally variable Ap stars and the subsample of stars that are not identified as Ap reveal that the latter subsample exhibits statistically (i) shorter rotation periods and (ii) significantly lower photometric amplitudes.

We present first results based on the analysis of nineteen previously known magnetic O, B and A stars observed in 2-minute cadence in sectors 1 and 2 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. We derive precise rotational periods from the newly obtained light curves and compare them to previously published values. We also discuss the overall photometric phenomenology of the known magnetic massive and intermediate-mass stars and propose an observational strategy to augment this population by taking advantage of the high-quality observations produced by TESS.

Project VeSElkA (Vertical Stratification of Element Abundances) has been initiated with the aim to detect and study the vertical stratification of element abundances in the atmosphere of chemically peculiar stars. Abundance stratification occurs in hydrodynamically stable stellar atmospheres due to the migration of the elements caused by atomic diffusion. Two HgMn stars, HD53929 and HD63975 were selected from the VeSElkA sample and analysed with the aim to detect some abundance peculiarities employing the ZEEMAN2 code. We present the results of abundance analysis of HD53929 and HD63975 observed recently with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Evidence of phosphorus vertical stratification was detected in the atmosphere of these two stars. In both cases, phosphorus abundance increases strongly towards the superficial layers. The strong overabundance of Mn found in stellar atmosphere of both stars confirms that they are HgMn type stars.

The new spectropolarimetric spectra of HD157087 obtained recently with ESPaDOnS at CFHT are analysed to verify the nature of this object. The fundamental stellar parameters $T_{\rm eff}$ = 8882 K, $\log{g}$=3.57 have been obtained for HD157087 from the analysis of nine Balmer line profiles in two available spectra. Comparison of the results of our abundance analysis with the previously published data shows a variability of average abundance with time for some chemical species, while the abundance of other elements remains almost the same. The abundance analysis also reveals evidence of a significant abundance increase towards the deeper atmospheric layers for C, S, Ca, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni and Zr. Together with the found enhanced abundance of Ca and Sc this fact contradicts the classification of HD157087 as a marginal Am star. Analysis of the available measurements of radial velocity results in detection of long periodic and short periodic variations. The long periodic variation supports the idea that HD157087 is an astrometric binary system with a period higher than 6 years. The presence of short periodic variation of $V_{\rm r}$, as well as the detection of temporal variation of average abundance suggest that HD157087 may be a triple system, where a short periodic binary rotates around a third star. In this case, the short periodic binary may consist of slowly rotating Am and A (or Ap with weak magnetic field) stars that have similar effective temperature and surface gravity, but different abundance peculiarities.

These models predict that bound remnants survive such events with, according to some simulations, a high kick velocity. We report the discovery of a high proper motion, low-mass white dwarf (LP 40-365) that travels at a velocity greater than the Galactic escape velocity and whose peculiar atmosphere is dominated by intermediate-mass elements. Strong evidence indicates that this partially burnt remnant was ejected following a subluminous Type Ia supernova event. This supports the viability of single-degenerate supernova progenitors.

A new semi-automatic approach is employed to carry out the abundance analysis of high-resolution spectra of HD41076 and HD148330 obtained recently with the spectropolarimetre ESPaDOnS at the CFHT. This approach allows to prepare in a semi-automatic mode the input data for the modified ZEEMAN2 code and to analyse several hundreds of line profiles in sequence during a single run. It also provides more information on abundance distribution for each chemical element at the deeper atmospheric layers. Our analysis of the Balmer profiles observed in the spectra of HD41076 and HD148330 has resulted in the estimates of their effective temperature, gravity, metallicity and radial velocity. The respective models of stellar atmosphere have been calculated with the code PHOENIX and used to carry out abundance analysis employing the modified ZEEMAN2 code. The analysis shows a deficit of the C, N, F, Mg, Ca, Ti, V, Cu, Y, Mo, Sm and Gd, and overabundance of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd and Dy in the stellar atmosphere of HD41076. In the atmosphere of HD148330, the C, N and Mo appear to be underabundant, while the Ne, Na, Al, Si, P, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd and Dy are overabundant. We also have found signatures of vertical abundance stratification of Fe, Ti, Cr and Mn in HD41076, and of Fe, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Y, Zr, Ce, Nd, Sm and Gd in HD148330.

We present results for the estimation of gravity, effective temperature, and radial velocity of poorly studied chemically peculiar stars recently observed with the spectropolarimeter Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for Observations of Stars at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in the frame of the Vertical Stratification of Element Abundances project. The effective temperature and surface gravity values are determined for the very first time for four of the stars from our sample (HD23878, HD83373, HD95608, and HD164584). Grids of stellar atmosphere models with the corresponding fluxes have been calculated using version 15 of the PHOENIX code for effective temperatures in the range of 5000-15,000 K, for the logarithm of surface gravities in the range of 3.0-4.5 and for the metallicities from -1.0 to +1.5. We used these fluxes to fit the Balmer line profiles employing the code FITSB2 that produces estimates of the effective temperature, gravity, and radial velocity for each star. When possible, our results are compared to those previously published. The physical characteristics of 16 program stars are discussed with the future aim to study the abundance anomalies of chemical species and the possible vertical abundance stratification in their stellar atmosphere.

HD76431 is a slow rotating post-HB star that shows an underabundance of helium by 0.5 dex relative to the solar value. These observational facts suggest that atomic diffusion could be active in its atmosphere. We have used the MMT and Bok spectra to estimate the atmospheric parameters of the target star using the model atmospheres and synthetic spectra calculated with TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. The derived values of the effective temperature, surface gravity, helium abundance are consistent with those obtained by Ramspeck et al. (2001b). It appears that NLTE effect are not important for HD76431. We have used Stokes I spectra from ESPaDOnS at CFHT to perform an abundance analysis and a search for observational evidence of vertical stratification of the abundance of certain elements. The results of our abundance analysis are in good agreement with previously published data with respect to average abundances. Our numerical simulations show that carbon and nitrogen reveal signatures of vertical abundance stratification in the atmosphere of HD76431. It appears that the carbon abundance increases toward the deeper atmospheric layers. Nitrogen also shows a similar behaviour, but in deeper atmospheric layers we obtain a significant dispersion for the estimates of its abundance. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of vertical abundance stratification of metals in a post-HB star and up to now it is the hottest star to show such stratification features. We also report the detection of two SiIII and one TiIII emission lines in the spectra of HD76431 that were not detected in previous studies.

A number of prominent spectral lines in the spectra of magnetic A and B main sequence stars are produced by closely spaced doublets or triplets. Depending on the strength and orientation of magnetic field, the PPB magnetic splitting can result in the Stokes $I$ profiles of a spectral line that differ significantly from those predicted by the theory of Zeeman effect. Such lines should be treated using the theory of the partial Paschen-Back (PPB) effect. To estimate the error introduced by the use of the Zeeman approximation, numerical simulations have been performed for Si II and Si III lines assuming an oblique rotator model. The analysis indicates that for high precision studies of some spectral lines the PPB approach should be used if the field strength at the magnetic poles is Bp> 6-10 kG and Vsin(i) < 15 km/s. In the case of the Si II line 5041A the difference between the simulated PPB and Zeeman profiles is caused by a significant contribution from a so called "ghost" line. The Stokes I and V profiles of this particular line simulated in the PPB regime provide a significantly better fit to the observed profiles in the spectrum of the magnetic Ap star HD318107 than the profiles calculated assuming the Zeeman effect.

NGC288 is a globular cluster with a well-developed blue horizontal branch covering the u-jump that indicates the onset of diffusion. It is therefore well suited to study the effects of diffusion in blue horizontal branch (HB) stars. We compare observed abundances with predictions from stellar evolution models calculated with diffusion and from stratified atmospheric models. We verify the effect of using stratified model spectra to derive atmospheric parameters. In addition, we investigate the nature of the overluminous blue HB stars around the u-jump. We defined a new photometric index sz from uvby measurements that is gravity-sensitive between 8000K and 12000K. Using medium-resolution spectra and Stroemgren photometry, we determined atmospheric parameters (T_eff, log g) and abundances for the blue HB stars. We used both homogeneous and stratified model spectra for our spectroscopic analyses. The atmospheric parameters and masses of the hot HB stars in NGC288 show a behaviour seen also in other clusters for temperatures between 9000K and 14000K. Outside this temperature range, however, they instead follow the results found for such stars in omega Cen. The abundances derived from our observations are for most elements (except He and P) within the abundance range expected from evolutionary models that include the effects of atomic diffusion and assume a surface mixed mass of 10^-7 M0. The abundances predicted by stratified model atmospheres are generally significantly more extreme than observed, except for Mg. When effective temperatures, surface gravities, and masses are determined with stratified model spectra, the hotter stars agree better with canonical evolutionary predictions. Our results show definite promise towards solving the long-standing problem of surface gravity and mass discrepancies for hot HB stars, but much work is still needed to arrive at a self-consistent solution.

Modelling of the spectra of magnetic A and B main sequence stars is generally done assuming that all the lines are split by the magnetic field according to the Zeeman effect. However, a number of prominent spectral lines are produced by closely spaced doublets or triplets. Such lines should be treated using the theory of the partial Paschen-Back (PPB) effect. Depending on the strength and orientation of magnetic field, the PPB effect can result in the Stokes IV profiles of a spectral line that differ significantly from those predicted by the Zeeman effect theory. It is important to understand the size and types of errors that are introduced into magnetic spectrum synthesis by treating such lines with the usual Zeeman splitting theory rather than using the correct theoretical treatment of line splitting. To estimate the error introduced by the use of the Zeeman approximation, numerical simulations have been performed for spectral lines of the element silicon, for which a number of important lines are actually in the PPB regime, assuming an oblique rotator model, for various silicon abundances and Vsini values. A comparative analysis of the Stokes IV profiles calculated assuming the PPB and Zeeman splitting has been carried out for a number of both strong and weak SiII and SiIII lines. The analysis indicates that for high precision studies of some spectral lines the PPB approach should be used if the field strength at the magnetic poles is Bp>10kG. In the case of the SiII line 5041A, the difference between the two simulated profiles is caused by a significant contribution from a so called "ghost" line.

Blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars with $T_{\rm eff}$ approximately larger than 11500 K show several observational anomalies. In globular clusters, they exhibit low rotational velocities, abundance anomalies (as compared to cluster abundances), photometric jumps and gaps and spectroscopic gravities lower than predicted by canonical models. It is commonly believed that the low rotational velocities of these stars permit atomic diffusion to be efficient in their atmosphere thereby causing the observed anomalies. Recent detections of vertical stratification of iron (and some other chemical elements) in several BHB stars concur with this framework. In this paper, improved model atmospheres that include the vertical stratification of the elements are applied to BHB stars to verify if they can explain their observational anomalies. The results from theoretical model atmospheres are consistent with the photometric jumps and gaps observed for BHB stars in globular clusters. It is found that iron stratification in the theoretical models and that obtained from observations have similar tendancies. Our results also show that the spectroscopic gravities obtained while using chemically homogeneous model atmospheres to fit observations are underestimated. These results significantly strengthen the belief that atomic diffusion is responsible for these BHB-star anomalies.

Two other BHB stars (B334 in M15 and B176 in M92) also show possible iron stratification in their atmosphere. A dependence of the slope of iron stratification on the effective temperature was also discovered. It is found that the vertical stratification of iron is strongest in BHB stars with Teff around 11,500K. The slope of iron abundance decreases as Teff increases and becomes negligible for the BHB stars with Teff= 14,000K. These results support the hypothesis regarding the efficiency of atomic diffusion in the stellar atmospheres of BHB stars with Teff > 11,500K.

Using spectrum synthesis, mean photospheric chemical abundances are derived for 22 ions of 16 elements. We find good agreement between our derived abundances and those published previously by other authors. For the 5 elements that present a sufficient number of suitable lines, we have attempted to detect vertical chemical stratification by analyzing the dependence of derived abundance as a function of optical depth. For most elements and most stars we find no evidence of chemical stratification with typical 3σupper limits of Δ\log N_elem/N_tot~0.1-0.2 dex per unit optical depth. However, for Mn in the atmosphere of HD 178065 we find convincing evidence of stratification. The magnetic star HD 21699 possesses a unique magnetic field structure where the magnetic dipole is displaced from the centre by 0.4 +/- 0.1 of the stellar radius (perpendicularly to the magnetic axis), as a result, the magnetic poles are situated close to one another on the stellar surface with an angular separation of 55$^o$ and not 180$^o$ as seen in the case of a centred dipole. Respectively, the two magnetic poles form a large "magnetic spot". High-resolution spectra were obtained allowing He I and Si II abundance variations to be studied as a function of rotational phase. The results show that the helium abundance is concentrated in one hemisphere of the star, near the magnetic poles and it is comparatively weaker in another hemisphere, where magnetic field lines are horizontal with respect to the stellar surface. At the same time, the silicon abundance is greatest between longitudes of 180 - 320$^o$, the same place where the helium abundance is the weakest. These abundance variations (with rotational phase) support predictions made by the theory of atomic diffusion in the presence of a magnetic field. Simultaneously, these result support the possibility of the formation of unusual structures in stellar magnetic fields. Analysis of vertical stratification of the silicon and helium abundances shows that the boundaries of an abundance jump (in the two step model) are similar for each element; $τ_{5000}$ = 0.8-1.2 for helium and 0.5-1.3 for silicon. The elemental abundances in the layers of effective formation of selected absorption lines for various phases are also correlated with the excitation energies of low transition levels: abundances are enhanced for higher excitation energy and higher optical depth within the applied model atmosphere.

The observed slow rotation and abundance peculiarities of certain blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars suggests that atomic diffusion can be important in their stellar atmospheres and can lead to vertical abundance stratification of chemical species in the atmosphere. To verify this hypothesis, we have undertaken an abundance stratification analysis in the atmospheres of six BHB stars, based on recently acquired McDonald-CE spectra. Our numerical simulations show that the iron abundance is vertically stratified in the atmospheres of two stars in M15: B267 and B279. One star WF2-2541 in M13 also appears to have vertically stratified iron abundance, while for WF4-3085 the signatures of iron stratification are less convincing. In all cases the iron abundances increase towards the lower atmosphere. The other two stars in our sample, WF4-3485 and B84, do not show any significant variation of iron with atmospheric depth. Our results support the idea that atomic diffusion dominates other hydrodynamic processes in the atmospheres of BHB stars.

Abstract:
The observed abundance peculiarities of many chemical species relative to the expected cluster metallicity in blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars presumably appear as a result of atomic diffusion in the photosphere. The slow rotation (typically $v\sin{i}<$ 10 km s$^{-1}$) of BHB stars with effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}>$ 11,500 K supports this idea since the diffusion mechanism is only effe…

The observed abundance peculiarities of many chemical species relative to the expected cluster metallicity in blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars presumably appear as a result of atomic diffusion in the photosphere. The slow rotation (typically $v\sin{i}<$ 10 km s$^{-1}$) of BHB stars with effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}>$ 11,500 K supports this idea since the diffusion mechanism is only effective in a stable stellar atmosphere. In this work we search for observational evidence of vertical chemical stratification in the atmospheres of six hot BHB stars: B84, B267 and B279 in M15 and WF2-2541, WF4-3085 and WF4-3485 in M13. We undertake an abundance stratification analysis of the stellar atmospheres of the aforementioned stars, based on acquired Keck HIRES spectra. We have found from our numerical simulations that three stars (B267, B279 and WF2-2541) show clear signatures of the vertical stratification of iron whose abundance increases toward the lower atmosphere, while the other two stars (B84 and WF4-3485) do not. For WF4-3085 the iron stratification results are inconclusive. B267 also shows a signature of titanium stratification. Our estimates for radial velocity, $v\sin{i}$ and overall iron, titanium and phosphorus abundances agree with previously published data for these stars after taking the measurement errors into account. The results support the hypothesis regarding the efficiency of atomic diffusion in the stellar atmospheres of BHB stars with $T_{\rm eff}>$ 11,500 K.

Abstract:
It is commonly believed that the observed overabundances of many chemical species relative to the expected cluster metallicity in blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars appear as a result of atomic diffusion in the photosphere. The slow rotation of BHB stars (with T_eff > 11,500K), typically v sin{i} < 10 km/s, is consistent with this idea. In this work we search for observational evidence of vertic…

In this work we search for observational evidence of vertical chemical stratification in the atmosphere of HD135485. If this evidence exists, it will demonstrate the importance of atomic diffusion processes in the atmospheres of BHB stars. We undertake an extensive abundance stratification analysis of the atmosphere of HD135485, based on recently acquired high resolution and S/N CFHT ESPaDOnS spectra and a McDonald-CE spectrum. Our numerical simulations show that nitrogen and sulfur reveal signatures of vertical abundance stratification in the stellar atmosphere. It appears that the abundances of these elements increase toward the upper atmosphere. This fact cannot be explained by the influence of microturbulent velocity, because oxygen, carbon, neon, argon, titanium and chromium do not show similar behavior and their abundances remain constant throughout the atmosphere. It seems that the iron abundance may increase marginally toward the lower atmosphere. This is the first demonstration of vertical abundance stratification of metals in a BHB star.

We present the results of a study of the photospheric abundances of the HgMn star HD 175640, conducted using archival ESO-UVES spectra. A large number of unblended (titanium, chromium, manganese and iron) lines were studied to search for the presence of chemical stratification in the atmosphere of this star. The selected lines are located in the visible region of the spectrum, longward of the Balmer jump, in orders with S/N $\geq$ 300. We derived the abundance of each element by calculating independently the abundance associated each line. We then characterized the depth of formation of each line, and examined the dependence of abundance on optical depth. Titanium, chromium, manganese and iron show no variation of their abundance with optical depth. These four elements do not appear to be strongly stratified in the atmosphere of HD 175640. This indicates that if stratification occurs, it must be in atmospheric layers which are not diagnosed by the spectral lines studied, or that it is too weak to detect using these data. We also report evidence that HD 175640 is an SB1, and furthermore report anomalous shifts of some strong Fe {\sc II} lines, the origin of which is unclear.

The surface magnetic field configuration of the Ap star HD 118022 (78 Vir) has been reconstructed in the framework of the magnetic charge distribution (MCD) method from the analysis of Stokes $IQUV$ spectra obtained using the MuSiCoS spectropolarimeter at Pic du Midi Observatory. Magnetically-sensitive Fe~{\sc ii} lines were primarily employed in the analysis, supposing that iron is evenly distributed over the stellar surface. We show that the Stokes $IQUV$ profile shapes and variations of 78 Vir can be approximately fit assuming a global magnetic field configuration described by a slightly decentered, inclined magnetic dipole of polar surface intensity approximately 3.3~kG. The derived inclinations of the stellar rotational axis to the line of sight $i=24\pm 5\degr$ as well as to the magnetic dipole axis $β=124\pm5\degr$ are in good agreement with previous estimations by other authors, whereas the sky-projected position angle\thanks{$Ω$ increases clockwise from the axis to the North Celestial Pole and relates to the azimuth angle $Θ$ specified by Landolfi at al.~(\cite{Landolfi+93}) as $Ω=360\degr-Θ$.} of the stellar rotation axis $Ω\sim110\degr$ is reported here for the first time. In addition, several lines of Cr~{\sc ii} and Ti~{\sc ii} were studied, yielding evidence for non-uniform surface distributions of these elements, and magnetic field results similar to those derived from Fe.

Three spectral synthesis codes - STARSP, ZEEMAN2 and SYNTHM were used. New lines of the rare earth elements from the DREAM database, and lines calculated on the basis of the NIST energy levels were included. Magnetic splitting and other line broadening processes were taken into account. Enhanced abundances of lithium in the atmospheres of the stars studied are obtained for both the lithium lines. High estimates of 6Li/7Li ratio (0.2 -- 0.5) for the studied star can be explained by Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) production through the spallation reactions and the preservation of the original $^6$Li and $^7$Li by the strong magnetic fields.
