Surface photometry of 50 dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume

Abstract:
Results of surface photometry of 50 galaxies in the Local Volume based on archived images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. Integrated magnitudes in the V and I bands are introduced for the sample galaxies, along with brightness and color profiles. The obtained photometric parameters are compared with the measurements of other authors.

The distance to the giant elliptical galaxy M87 and the size of its stellar subsystem

Stellar photometry in nine fields around the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the Virgo cluster is obtained from archival images of the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting Hertzsprung--Russell diagrams show populated red-giant and AGB branches. The position of the tip of the red-giant branch (the TRGB discontinuity) is found to vary with galactocentric distance. This variation can be interpreted as the effect of metal-rich red giants on the procedure of the measurement of the TRGB discontinuity or as a consequence of the existence of a weak gas-and-dust cloud around M87 extending out to $10^\prime$ along the galactocentric radius and causing $I$-band absorption of up to $0.^m2$ near the center of the galaxy. The TRGB stars located far from the M87 center yield an average distance modulus of $(m-M) = 30.91\pm0.08$, which corresponds to the distance of $D=15.4\pm0.6$ Mpc. It is shown that stars in the field located between M86 and M87 galaxies at angular separations of $37^\prime$ and $40^\prime$ are not intergalactic stars, but belong to the M87 galaxy, i.e., that the stellar halo of this galaxy can be clearly seen at a galactocentric distance of 190 kpc. The distances are measured to four dwarf galaxies P4anon, NGC4486A, VCCA039, and dSph-D07, whose images can be seen in the fields studied. The first three galaxies are M87 satellites, whereas dSph-D07 is located at a greater distance and is a member of the M86 group.

We present an analysis of new observations of a peculiar galaxy PGC 60020, obtained with the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS with a multimode SCORPIO instrument. The observational data includes direct images in the B, V, Rc photometric bands and long-slit spectra in the red range (the Ha line spectral region). Based on the analysis of these data it was found that PGC 60020 belongs to the type of classical polar-ring galaxies. Its main body is an S0 galaxy, around the major axis of which a disk of gas, dust and stars is rotating in the plane inclined at an angle of about 60 degrees to the galactic plane. A loop-shaped structure stretches from the southern part of this disk (possibly, a tidal tail) towards the SDSS J171745.58+404137.1 galaxy.

This paper is devoted to the analysis of new observational data for the group of galaxies NGC 7465/64/63, which were obtained at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) with the multimode instrument SCORPIO and the Multi Pupil Fiber Spectrograph. For one of group members (NGC 7465) the presence of a polar ring was suspected. Large-scale brightness distributions, velocity and velocity dispersion fields of the ionized gas for all three galaxies as well as line-of-sight velocity curves on the basis of emission and absorption lines and a stellar velocity field in the central region for NGC 7465 were constructed. As a result of the analysis of the obtained information, we revealed an inner stellar disk (r ~ 0.5 kpc) and a warped gaseous disk in addition to the main stellar disk, in NGC 7465. On the basis of the joint study of photometric and spectral data it was ascertained that NGC 7464 is the irregular galaxy of the IrrI type, whose structural and kinematic peculiarities resulted most likely from the gravitational interaction with NGC 7465. The velocity field of the ionized gas of NGC 7463 turned out typical for spiral galaxies with a bar, and the bending of outer parts of its disk could arise owing to the close encounter with one of galaxies of the environment.

We present surface photometry and metallicity measurements for 104 nearby dwarf galaxies imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope.
In addition, we carried out photometry for 26 galaxies of the sample and for Sextans B on images of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our sample comprises dwarf spheroidal, irregular and transition type galaxies located within ~10 Mpc in the field and in nearby groups: M81, Centaurus A, Sculptor, and Canes Venatici I cloud. It is found that the early-type galaxies have on average higher metallicity at a given luminosity in comparison to the late-type objects. Dwarf galaxies with M_B > -12 -- -13 mag deviate toward larger scale lengths from the scale length -- luminosity relation common for spiral galaxies, h \propto L^{0.5}_B. The following correlations between fundamental parameters of the galaxies are consistent with expectations if there is pronounced gas-loss through galactic winds: 1) between the luminosity of early-type dwarf galaxies and the mean metallicity of constituent red giant branch stars, Z ~ L^0.4, 2) between mean surface brightness within the 25 mag/sq.arcsec isophote and the corresponding absolute magnitude in the V and I bands, SB_25 ~ 0.3 M_25, and 3) between the central surface brightness (or effective surface brightness) and integrated absolute magnitude of galaxies in the V and I bands, SB_0 ~ 0.5 M_L, SB_e ~ 0.5 M_e. The knowledge of basic photometric parameters for a large sample of dwarf galaxies is essential for a better understanding of their evolution.
