We obtain the largest catalog of multi-mode $δ$ Sct stars in the northern sky to date using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Data Release 20 (DR20). The catalog includes 2254 objects, of which 2181 are new to our study. Among these multi-mode $δ$ Sct stars, 2142 objects are double-mode $δ$ Sct, while 109 objects are triple-mode $δ$ Sct and 3 are quadruple-mode $δ$ Sct. By analyzing the light curves in the $r$ and $g$ bands of the ZTF, we determine the basic parameters of multi-mode $δ$ Sct stars, including the periods and amplitudes. Periods are checked by comparison with the OGLE catalog of double-mode $δ$ Sct stars. On the Petersen diagram, multi-mode $δ$ Sct stars form six sequences. We find that in Galactic coordinates, the periods of 1O/F double-mode $δ$ Sct stars at high latitudes are shorter than those of 1O/F double-mode $δ$ Sct stars in the disk, due to metallicity variations. In the future, our catalog can be used to establish the period--luminosity relation and the period--metallicity relation of double-mode $δ$ Sct stars, and to study the Galactic structure.

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO.

We complement the MALATANG sample of dense gas in nearby galaxies with archival observations of $^{12}\rm CO$ and its isotopologues to determine scaling relations between Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) 12 $μ$m emission and molecular gas tracers at sub-kiloparsec scales. We find that 12 $μ$m luminosity is more tightly correlated with $^{12}\rm CO$ than it is with $^{13}\rm CO$ or dense gas tracers. Residuals between predicted and observed $^{12}\rm CO$ are only weakly correlated with molecular gas mass surface density ($Σ_{\rm mol}$) in regions where $Σ_{\rm mol}$ is very low ($\sim 10~{\rm M_{\odot}~pc^{-2}}$). Above this limit, the $^{12}\rm CO$ residuals show no correlations with physical conditions of molecular gas, while $^{13}\rm CO$ residuals depend on the gas optical depth and temperature. By analyzing differences from galaxy to galaxy, we confirm that the $^{12}\rm CO$-12 $μ$m relation is strong and statistically robust with respect to star forming galaxies and AGN hosts. These results suggest that WISE 12 $μ$m emission can be used to trace total molecular gas instead of dense molecular gas, likely because polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, a major contributor to WISE 12 $μ$m~emission) may be well-mixed with the gas that is traced by $^{12}\rm CO$. We propose that WISE 12 $μ$m luminosity can be used to estimate molecular gas surface density for statistical analyses of the star formation process in galaxies.

The tilt angle of sunspot groups is crucial in the BL type dynamo. Some studies have shown that the tilt coefficient is anti-correlated with the cycle strength. If the anti-correlation exists, it will be shown to act as an effective nonlinearity of the BL-type dynamo to modulate the solar cycle. However, some studies have shown that the anti-correlation has no statistical significance. We aim to investigate the causes behind the controversial results of tilt angle studies and to establish whether the tilt coefficient is indeed anti-correlated with the cycle strength. We first analyzed the tilt angles from DPD. Based on the methods applied in previous studies, we took two criteria to select the data, along with the linear and square-root functions to describe Joy's law, and three methods to derive the tilt coefficients for cycles 21-24. This allowed us to evaluate different methods based on comparisons of the differences among the tilt coefficients and the tilt coefficient uncertainties. Then we utilized Monte Carlo experiments to verify the results. Finally, we extended these methods to analyze the separate hemispheric DPD data and the tilt angle data from Kodaikanal and Mount Wilson. The tilt angles exhibit an extremely wide scatter due to both the intrinsic mechanism for its generation and measurement errors, for instance, the unipolar regions included in data sets. Different methods to deal with the uncertainties are mainly responsible for the controversial character of the previous results. The linear fit to the tilt-latitude relation of sunspot groups with $Δs>2.5$ of a cycle carried out without binning the data can minimize the effect of the tilt scatter on the uncertainty of the tilt coefficient. Based on this method the tilt angle coefficient is anti-correlated with the cycle strength with strong statistical significance.

This is perhaps the first effort, to our knowledge, in calibrating both [CI]-to-H$_2$ conversion factors across the spiral disks at spatially resolved $\sim1\,$kpc scale though such studies have been discussed globally in galaxies near and far. In order to derive the conversion factors and achieve these calibrations, we adopt three different dust-to-gas ratio (DGR) assumptions which scale approximately with metallicity taken from precursory results. We find that for all DGR assumptions, the $α_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$, $α_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$, and $α_\mathrm{CO}$ are mostly flat with galactocentric radii, whereas both $α_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$ and $α_\mathrm{CO}$ show decrease in the inner regions of galaxies. And the central $α_\mathrm{CO}$ and $α_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$ values are on average $\sim 2.2$ and $1.8$ times lower than its galaxy averages. The obtained carbon abundances from different DGR assumptions show flat profiles with galactocentric radii, and the average carbon abundance of the galaxies is comparable to the usually adopted value of $3 \times 10^{-5}$. We find that both metallicity and infrared luminosity correlate moderately with the $α_\mathrm{CO}$ whereas only weakly with either the $α_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ or carbon abundance, and not at all with the $α_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$.

To study the high-transition dense-gas tracers and their relationships to the star formation of the inner $\sim$ 2 kpc circumnuclear region of NGC253, we present HCN $J=4-3$ and HCO$^+ J=4-3$ maps obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). With the spatially resolved data, we compute the concentration indices $r_{90}/r_{50}$ for the different tracers. HCN and HCO$^+$ 4-3 emission features tend to be centrally concentrated, which is in contrast to the shallower distribution of CO 1-0 and the stellar component. The dense-gas fraction ($f_\text{dense}$, traced by the velocity-integrated-intensity ratios of HCN/CO and HCO$^+$/CO) and the ratio $R_\text{31}$ (CO 3-2/1-0) decline towards larger galactocentric distances, but increase with higher SFR surface density. The radial variation and the large scatter of $f_\text{dense}$ and $R_\text{31}$ imply distinct physical conditions in different regions of the galactic disc. The relationships of $f_\text{dense}$ versus $Σ_\text{stellar}$, and SFE$_\text{dense}$ versus $Σ_\text{stellar}$ are explored. SFE$_\text{dense}$ increases with higher $Σ_\text{stellar}$ in this galaxy, which is inconsistent with previous work that used HCN 1-0 data. This implies that existing stellar components might have different effects on the high-$J$ HCN and HCO$^+$ than their low-$J$ emission. We also find that SFE$_\text{dense}$ seems to be decreasing with higher $f_\text{dense}$, which is consistent with previous works, and it suggests that the ability of the dense gas to form stars diminishes when the average density of the gas increases. This is expected in a scenario where only the regions with high-density contrast collapse and form stars.

We present maps of atomic carbon [CI](1-0) and [CI](2-1) at a linear resolution ~1kpc scale for a sample of one HII, six LINER, three Seyfert and five starburst galaxies observed with Herschel. We compare spatial distributions of two [CI] lines with that of CO(1-0) emission, and find that both [CI] lines distribute similarly to CO(1-0) emission in most galaxies. We present luminosity ratio maps of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_[CI](1-0) (hereafter R_[CI]) and f_70/f_160. L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0), R_[CI] and f_70/f_160 are centrally peaked in starbursts; whereas remain relatively constant in LINERs, indicating that star-forming activity can enhance carbon emission, especially for [CI](2-1). We explore the correlations between the luminosities of CO(1-0) and [CI] lines, and find that L'_CO(1-0) correlates tightly and almost linearly with both L'_[CI](1-0) and L'_[CI](2-1), suggesting that [CI] lines, similar as CO(1-0), can trace total molecular gas in our resolved galaxies on kpc scales. We investigate the dependence of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0), L'_[CI](2-1)/L'_CO(1-0) and [CI] excitation temperature T_ex on dust temperature T_dust, and find non-correlation, a weak and modest correlation, respectively. The ratio of L'_[CI](1-0)/L'_CO(1-0) stays smooth distribution in most galaxies, indicating that the conversion factor of [CI](1-0) luminosity to H_2 mass (X_[CI](1-0)) changes with CO(1-0) conversion factor (α_CO) proportionally. Under optically thin and LTE assumptions, we derive a galaxy-wide average carbon excitation temperature T_ex ~ 19.7 \pm 0.5K and an average neutral carbon abundance X[CI]/X[H_2] ~2.5 \pm 1.0 * 10^{-5} in our resolved sample, which is comparable to the usually adopted value of 3*10^{-5}, but ~3 times lower than the carbon abundance in local (U)LIRGs. We conclude that the carbon abundance varies in different galaxy types.

The sample is selected from fields covered by the Herschel-ATLAS survey that are also targeted by the MaNGA optical integral-field spectroscopic survey. The new JCMT observations combined with the multi-wavelength ancillary data will allow for the robust characterization of the properties of dust in the nearby Universe, and the benchmarking of scaling relations between dust, gas, and global galaxy properties. In this paper we give an overview of the survey objectives and details about the sample selection and JCMT observations, present a consistent 30 band UV-to-FIR photometric catalog with derived properties, and introduce the JINGLE Main Data Release (MDR). Science highlights include the non-linearity of the relation between 850um luminosity and CO line luminosity, and the serendipitous discovery of candidate z>6 galaxies.

The prediction of the strength of future solar cycles is of interest because of its practical significance for space weather and as a test of our theoretical understanding of the solar cycle. The Babcock-Leighton mechanism allows predictions by assimilating the observed magnetic field on the surface. But the emergence of sunspot groups has the random properties, which make it impossible to accurately predict the solar cycle and also strongly limit the scope of cycle predictions. Hence we develop the scheme to investigate the predictability of the solar cycle over one cycle. When a cycle has been ongoing for more than 3 years, the sunspot group emergence can be predicted along with its uncertainty during the rest time of the cycle. The method for doing this is to start by generating a set of random realizations which obey the statistical relations of the sunspot emergence. We then use a surface flux transport model to calculate the possible axial dipole moment evolutions. The correlation between the axial dipole moment at cycle minimum and the subsequent cycle strength and other empirical properties of solar cycles are used to predict the possible profiles of the subsequent cycle. We apply this scheme to predict the large-scale field evolution from 2018 to the end of cycle 25, whose maximum strength is expected to lie in the range from 93 to 155 with a probability of 95\%.

All galaxies were mapped in the central 2 arcmin $\times$ 2 arcmin region at 14 arcsec (FWHM) resolution (corresponding to linear scales of ~ 0.2-1.0 kpc). The L_IR-L'_dense relation, where the dense gas is traced by the HCN J=4-3 and the HCO^+ J=4-3 emission, measured in our sample of spatially-resolved galaxies is found to follow the linear correlation established globally in galaxies within the scatter. We find that the luminosity ratio, L_IR/L'_dense, shows systematic variations with L_IR within individual spatially resolved galaxies, whereas the galaxy-integrated ratios vary little. A rising trend is also found between L_IR/L'_dense ratio and the warm-dust temperature gauged by the 70 μm/100 μm flux ratio. We find the luminosity ratios of IR/HCN(4-3) and IR/HCO^+(4-3), which can be taken as a proxy for the efficiency of star formation in the dense molecular gas (SFE_dense), appears to be nearly independent of the dense-gas fraction (f_dense) for our sample of galaxies. The SFE of the total molecular gas (SFE_mol) is found to increase substantially with f_dense when combining our data with that on local (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies and high-z quasars. The mean L'_HCN(4-3)/L'_HCO^+(4-3) line ratio measured for the six targeted galaxies is 0.9+/-0.6. No significant correlation is found for the L'_HCN(4-3)/L'_HCO^+(4-3) ratio with the SFR as traced by L_IR, nor with the warm-dust temperature, for the different populations of galaxies.

We explore the correlations between the luminosities of CO (1$-$0) and [C I] lines, and find that $L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ correlates almost linearly with both $L'_ \mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ and $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$, suggesting that [C I] lines can trace total molecular gas mass at least for (U)LIRGs. We also investigate the dependence of $L'_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$/$L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$, $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$/$L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ and $L'_\mathrm{[CI](2-1)}$/$L'_\mathrm{[CI](1-0)}$ on the far-infrared color of 60-to-100 $μ$m, and find non-correlation, a weak correlation and a modest correlation, respectively. The resulting $\mathrm{H_2}$ masses using these [C I]-based conversion factors roughly agree with those derived from $L'_\mathrm{CO(1-0)}$ and CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor.
