The analysis of photometrical observations of comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 is presented. The broadband observations were carried out for 15 nights from 2012 to 2019 at the Lisnyky observational station of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Apparent magnitudes and dust productivity level $Afρ$ in filter R were calculated. Middle and height dust activity of the comet is characterized by parameter $Afρ$ which varied from 1246 to 17563 cm during all periods of observation. Based on the morphological analysis, four jet-like structures were detected in the coma on almost all dates. Using the geometrical model for the jet structure interpretation during all observation sets, we obtained following results: the nucleus rotation periodof 57\pm2 days, the rotational axis orientation, the locations of active regions for four jet-like structures within a narrow belt near the equator.

We present the results of observations of asteroid (248370) QN$_{173}$ obtained during July 2021 - January 2022 with three telescopes. Our analysis revealed the presence of the dust tail for about half of a year. The direct images of the asteroid were obtained with broad-band filters. No emissions were revealed in the spectra, and the spectrum of the asteroid closely matched that of a C-type asteroid. Created color and linear polarization variations along the tail were analyzed. The asteroid demonstrated a redder color compared to the Sun. Dramatic changes in dust productivity obtained in different filters were not detected. The $g-r$ color changes from $0.2^{m}$ to $0.7^{m}$ over the coma, and the linear polarization degree varies from about $1.2$\% to $0.2$\% and from $-0.2$\% to $-1.5$\% at the phase angle of $23.2^{\circ}$ and $8.16^{\circ}$. The total dust mass ejected until the latest observation on October 10 is $4.2 \times 10^7$~kg, with a maximum rate of 2.6~kg\,s$^{-1}$ based on the Monte Carlo modeling of the dust tail. The estimated asteroid size is 1.3~km. It is shown that large particles are concentrated around the nucleus, whereas smaller ones dominate in the tail. The evolution of (248370) QN$_{173}$ orbit and the orbits of the sample of the 464 short-periodic comets were followed. Ten of them approached the asteroid's orbit. These objects are not genetically related, despite the very close distance of their orbits for a relatively long time.

Using our and other available in literature data, we found that the maximum degree of linear polarization of Phaethon in the V band is 45% at the phase angle 124 deg. Using the dependence (polarimetric slope-albedo) we have found the geometric albedo of asteroid Phaethon to be 0.06. This value falls into the lower range of albedo values for asteroids determined by different methods. The mean color indices U-B=0.207 and B-V=0.639 of the asteroid are derived at heliocentric and geocentric distances 1.077 au and 0.102 au, respectively. The effective diameter of Phaethon is estimated from obtained absolute magnitude and geometrical albedo, it is equal to 6.8 km. The best fit to the observed polarimetric data was obtained with the Sh-matrix model of conjugated random Gaussian particles composed of Mg-rich silicate (90%) and amorphous carbon (10%).

The radial profile slopes of these comets were measured in the R and HB-BC filters most representative of dust, and deviations from a radially expanding coma were identified as significant. The azimuthally averaged radial profile slope of comet 45P/HMP gradually changes from -1.81 $\pm$ 0.20 at 5.24 days pre-perihelion to -0.35 $\pm$ 0.16 at 74.41 days post perihelion. Contrastingly, the radial profile slope of 46P/Wirtanen stays fairly constant over the observed time period at -1.05 $\pm$ 0.05. Additionally, we find that the radial profile of 46P/Wirtanen is azimuthally dependent on the skyplane-projected solar position angle, while that of 45P/HMP is not. These results suggest that comet 45P/HMP and 46P/Wirtanen have vastly different coma dust environments and that their dust properties are distinct. As evident from these two comets, well-resolved inner comae are vital for detailed characterization of dust environments.

The narrow-band BC and RC cometary filters in the continuum were used. We identified numerous emissions of the CN, C2, C3, and NH2 molecules within the range of 3750-7100 Å. The C2/CN and C3/CN production rate ratios coincide with those of typical comets. Four fragments belonging to the coma were detected in both observational runs. We compared and analyzed temporal variations of the visual magnitudes, gas productivity, and dust colour. Based on our dynamical investigation of the orbits of comets C/1844 Y1 (Great comet) and C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS), we can claim that, with high probability, two comets do not have a common progenitor.

The dust production rates in terms of Afrho was measured for these comets. Using the retrieved values, an average dust production rate was derived under different model assumptions. A tentative calculation of the total mass loss of the comet nucleus within a certain observation period was executed. We calculated the corresponding thickness of the depleted uppermost layer where high-volatile ices completely sublimated. The results obtained in our study strongly support the idea that the observed activity of Comet SW1 requires a permanent demolition of the upper surface layers.

We present results of two-year photometric monitoring of Comet C/2011 J2 (LINEAR) that spans the time period from February 2013 through December 2014, before and after perihelion passage. The observations were conducted with broadband R filter. Analysis of observations of Comet C/2011 J2 (LINEAR) allows estimating the nucleus radius as function of geometric albedo and phase-darkening coefficient. Furthermore, our observations showed split of the comet. Fragment (B) additional to the primary C/2011 J2 nucleus was unambiguously detected; relative velocity is estimated to be near 0.17 ''/day. We derive the Afrho parameter and estimate the dust production rate in Comet C/2011 J2 (LINEAR) over the entire run of observations. We found a noticeable increase in Afrho parameter between September 18, 2014 and November 5, 2014, epoch when the nucleus presumably got split. On September 28, 2014, we observed a transit of the 16-magnitude star (USNO-A2 1275-18299027) near nucleus of the Comet C/2011 J2 (LINEAR). We retrieve the optical depth of the coma 0.034. The filling factor f that corresponds to such optical depth is in good quantitative agreement with the value that can be derived from the Afrho parameter under reasonable assumption on geometric albedo of cometary dust.

The spatial maps of the relative intensity and circular polarization as well as the spectral distribution of linear polarization are presented. There were two features (dust and gas tails) orientedin the solar and antisolar directions on February 2 and 14 that allowed us to determine rotation periodof the nucleus as 11.1 hours. We detected emissions of C2 , C3 , CN, CH, NH2 molecules as well as CO+ and H2O+ ions, along with a high level of the dust continuum. On February 2, the degree of linear polarization in the continuum, within the wavelength range of 0.67-0.68 μm, was about 5% in the near-nucleus region up to near 6000 km and decreased to about 3% at near 40,000 km. The left-handed (negative) circular polarization at the level approximately from -0.06% to -0.4% was observed at the distances up to 3*10^4 km from the nucleus on February 14 and April 21, respectively.

Less than one percent of the discovered small solar system objects have highly inclined orbits ($i>60^{\circ}$), and revolve around the Sun on near-polar or retrograde orbits. The origin and evolutionary history of these objects are not yet clear. In this work we study the surface properties and orbital dynamics of selected high-inclination objects. BVRI photometric observations were performed in 2019-2020 using the 2.0m telescope at the Terskol Observatory and the 2.6m telescope at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Additionally, we searched for high-inclination objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Pan-STARRS. The dynamics of the selected objects was studied using numerical simulations. We obtained new photometric observations of six high-inclination objects. All of the objects have similar $B-V$, $V-R$, $R-I$ colours, which are close to those of moderately red TNOs and grey Centaurs. The photometric data that were extracted from the all-sky surveys also correspond to moderately red surfaces of high-inclination objects. No signs of ultra-red material on the surface of high-inclination asteroids were found, which supports the results of previous works. The comet C/2018 DO4 (Lemmon) revealed some complex morphology with structures that could be associated with particles that were ejected from the cometary nucleus. For objects 2013 LU28, 2015 KZ120, and 2020 EP we estimated future and past lifetimes on their orbits. It appears that the orbits of considered objects are strongly chaotic, and with the available accuracy of the orbital elements no reliable predictions can be made about their distant past or future. The lifetimes of high-inclination objects turned out to be highly non-sensitive to the precision of the orbital elements, and to the Yarkovsky orbital drift.

Dust in comet 2P/Encke was mainly concentrated in the near-nucleus region of the coma: the maximum dust/gas ratios were 1.5 and 2.9 in the SED500 and the r-sdss filters near the nucleus but dropped sharply to ~0.2 and ~1 at the distance ~2500 km, respectively. Then these ratios began to increase at distances ~12000 km from the nucleus, the ratio was ~0.3 (SED500) and ~1.3 (r-sdds). There were significant variations of polarization over the coma, which correlated with the variations in the dust color and dust/gas ratio. Changes in polarization and color across the 2P/Encke coma indicate changes in physical properties of the dust particles with the distance from the nucleus. Our Sh-matrix computer simulations of light scattering by Gaussian particles allow us to suggest that the observed trends in color and polarization are mainly result from changing particle size.

Two dimensional long slit spectra and photometric images were obtained using the focal reducer SCORPIO attached to the prime focus of the 6-m telescope BTA (SAO RAS, Russia). The spectra cover the wavelength range of 4200-7000 Å. No emissions of C2 and CO+, which are expected in this wavelength region, were detected above 3 sigma level. An upper limit in gas production rate of C2 is expected to be 1.1*10^24 mol*s^-1. The continuum shows a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity along dispersion of 5.1% per 1000 Å. The color indices (B-V)=0.89 and (V-R) = 0.42 for the nucleus region or (B-V)=0.68 and (V-R)=0.39 for the coma region, which are derived from the photometric data, also evidence that the color of the cometary nucleus and dust are redder with respect to the Sun. The dust coma like a spiral galaxy adge on was fitted using a Monte Carlo model.

Observations were carried out at the 6-m BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia) with the multimode focal reducer SCORPIO-2. In 2013, the direct images of comet Encke were obtained with the broad-band V filters, whereas in 2017 the narrow-band cometary BC, RC, and NH2 filters as well as the medium-band SED500 and broad-band r-sdss filters were used for observations. About 60 emissions belonging to the CN, C2, C3, NH2, CH, and CO+ molecules were identified within the range 3750-7100 Å. The ratios of the production rates C2/CN and C3/CN correspond to the typical comets, not depleted in the carbon-chain. A complex structure of the coma was detected in both observational periods. In January 2017, the dust was in general concentrated near the nucleus, the dust/gas ratio was 2.9 in the r-sdss filter, however, this ratio was larger than 1 at distances 3000-40000 km from the nucleus. We found that about 75% of the flux of the reflected light in the central pixel was due to the nucleus, whereas the nucleus's flux contributed 48% in the total intensity of the 2000 km area of the coma. We found that after correction for the dust coma contamination the nucleus magnitude is 18.8m+/-0.2m.

We report results of polarimetric observations of comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner made at phase angles, α=76-78 deg, between 10 and 17 of September 2018, and compare them with previous measurements. We find significant variations in the polarimetric signals that appear consistent with those reported previously. These variations and subsequent modeling suggest that the particles in the coma are replenished within a period of approximately one day. This period is significantly shorter for highly absorbing carbonaceous particles than for non-absorbing Mg-rich silicate particles. Such a difference in the relative abundances of these components can lead to variations in the polarization response of the coma. The strong positive polarization in the subsolar direction suggests a large relative abundance of carbonaceous material, which may be an indicator of jet-type activity.

We measure the degree of linear polarization of comet 46P/Wirtanen during two months, embracing the perihelion passage in 2018 December with phase angles ranging from α=18.1 to 46.4 deg. The polarimetric response PQ obtained resembles what was previously found in comet C/1975 V1 (West). This suggests 46P/Wirtanen belongs to a group of comets with high maximum positive polarization. We conducted BVRI photometry of 46P and found either neutral or blue colour of its dust which is in good accordance with measurements of C/1975 V1 (West). While aperture-average polarimetry of 46P/Wirtanen reveals a nearly zero polarization PQ at the lowest phase angle α = 18.1 deg, simultaneous imaging polarimetry suggests that the negative polarization (PQ<0) arises in a region of within 5000 km of the nucleus, where the negative polarization could be as strong as PQ=-(1.44 +/- 0.15) percent. This observation suggests the existence of the circumnucleus halo and that the coma is populated by at least two types of dust particles. One of those reveals a low positive polarization at side scattering and high negative polarization near backscattering. Both polarimetric features are simultaneously produced by weakly absorbing Mg-rich silicate particles. Another type of dust produces solely positive polarization that could be attributed to carbonaceous particles. This composition of 46P/Wirtanen coma appears to be similar with what was previously found in comet C/1975 V1 (West).

Abstract:
We measured the degree of linear polarization P of comet C/2018 V1 (Machholz-Fujikawa-Iwamoto) with the broadband Johnson V filter in mid-November of 2018. Within a radius of \r{ho}=17,000 km of the inner coma, we detected an extremely low linear polarization at phase angles from 83 to 91.2 degree and constrained the polarization maximum to Pmax = (6.8 +/- 1.8)%. This is the lowest Pmax ever measured in a comet. Using model agglomerated debris particles, we reproduced the polarimetric response of comet C/2018 V1. Four retrieved refractive indices closely match what was experimentally found in Mg-rich silicates with little or no iron content. Moreover, the size distribution of the agglomerated debris particles appears in good quantitative agreement with the in situ findings of comet 1P/Halley. The dust model of polarization of comet C/2018 V1 suggests a strongly negative polarization with amplitude |Pmin| = 5%-7%; whereas, an interpretation based on gaseous emission requires no negative polarization at small phase angles. This dramatic difference could be used to discriminate gaseous-emission and dust explanations in low-Pmax comets in future.

We report photometric observations of comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 made on August 12, 2016 with the broadband B, V, R and I filters and the SOAR 4.1-meter telescope (Chile). We find the comet active at that time. Enhanced images obtained in all filters reveal three radial features in the 29P/ Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 coma, regardless of the image-processing algorithm. Using a high-resolution spectrum of comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 reported by Ivanova et al. (2018) on the same date, we estimate the relative contribution of the gaseous emission and the continuum to the total response measured with our broadband B and V filters. The gaseous-emission contribution appears to be very small 2.5%. We compute the dust production Af\r{ho} in 29P/ Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 for the four filters and find its growth with the wavelength, from 3,393 cm in the B filter to 8,561 cm in the I filter. We model the color slope of dust in Comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 using agglomerated debris particles. Simultaneous analysis of the color slope in the B-R and R-I pairs suggests a single dominant chemical species of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 dust particles consisting of Fe-Mg silicates and obeying a power-law size distribution with index n=2.55. This conclusion is consistent with the previous thermal-emission study of 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1.

The images obtained through BVR filters showed a bright, dust coma, indicating a high level of activity. We estimated a colour index and a colour excess for the comet. The parameter Af\r{ho}, which is used as an indicator of a cometary activity, was measured to be 2584 cm in the reference optical aperture of \r{ho}=10^4 km. The dust production constituted 33 kg/s and 9.3*10^3 kg/s, it was obtained using different methods. We also investigated the morphology of the comet using image enhancement techniques and found two jets in the coma.

We analysed the morphology of the CO+ and dust coma. The distributions of dust and CO+ ions in the coma are not similar and vary depending on the level of comet activity. CO+ ions are more concentrated towards the nucleus than the dust continuum. The column density of the CO+ was derived and found to vary from 3.7*10^9 to 4.3*10^10 ions cm^-2. The production rate of CO+ was estimated to be from (7.01)*10^24 to (1.15)*10^26 ions s^-1. We discuss possible mechanisms for the ionization of cometary material and show that impact ionization by solar wind particles is probably the main ionization mechanism at large heliocentric distances.

The coordinates of the object and its orbit were determined; and the apparent brightness in four filters, the absolute brightness in the V and R filters, and the color indices were obtained. The light curves suggest that no substantial changes in the brightness of asteroid occurred during the observations. The absolute brightness of the asteroid in the V and R filters was 9.1 mag and 8.8 mag, respectively. The mean value of the asteroid diameter was 119 km. The mean values of the color indices B-V=0.72 mag, V-R=0.29 mag, and R-I=0.31 mag agree well with the values for asteroids of the P and D types and its averages. The rotation period of the asteroid estimated from photometric observations was 16.1 h. The analysis of the data has shown that the asteroid continues to exhibit the same values of absolute brightness and other characteristics as those before the collision with a small body in December 2010, though the latter resulted in the outburst event and cometary activity of the asteroid. Most likely, the collision of asteroid (596) Scheila with a small body did not lead to catastrophic changes in the surface of the asteroid or to its compete breakup.

We monitor the inner coma of comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák searching for variations of its colour. Fast changes in colour of the comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák provide important clues for better understanding of the microphysical properties of its dust. Using the 61-cm and 70-cm telescopes we measured the apparent magnitude of the comet with the V and R Johnson-Cousins filters from January 29 until April 25 of 2017. The inner coma ({\sim} 2000 km) reveals fast and significant variations of colour. The most significant change was found between March 3 and 4 of 2017, when it changed from blue with a colour slope S {\approx}(-10.15 {\pm} 3.43){\%} per 0.1 μm to red with S {\approx} (16.48 {\pm} 4.27){\%} per 0.1 μm. This finding appears in good accordance with what was previously reported by Ivanova et al. (2017) for long-period comet C/2013 UQ4 (Catalina), suggesting that fast and significant variations of colour of dust could be a common feature of short- and long-period comets. We model observations of comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresák using the agglomerated debris particles and conclude that its inner coma consists of a mixture of at least two types of particles made of Mg-rich silicates and organics or Mg-Fe silicates.

Long-slit spectra and photometric and linear polarimetric images were obtained using the focal reducer SCORPIO-2 attached to the prime focus of the 6-m telescope BTA (SAO RAS, Russia). We simulated the behavior of color and polarization in the coma presenting the cometary dust as a set of polydisperse polyshapes rough spheroids. No emissions were detected in the 3800~--~7200~$Å$ wavelength range. The continuum showed a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity 21.6$\pm$0.2\% per 1000~$Å$ within the 4650~--~6200~$Å$ wavelength region. The fan-like structure in the sunward hemisphere was detected. The radial profiles of surface brightness differ for r-sdss and g-sdss filters, indicating predominance of submicron and micron-sized particles in cometary coma. The dust color (g--r) varies from 0.75$ \pm $0.05$^m$ to 0.45$ \pm $0.06$^m$ along the tail. For aperture radius near 20~000~km, the dust productions in various filters were estimated as $Afρ$~=~680$\pm$18~cm (r-sdss) and 887$ \pm $16~cm (g-sdss). The polarization map showed spatial variations of polarization over the coma from about --3\% near the nucleus to --8\% at cometocentric distance about 150~000~km. Our simulations show that the dust particles were dominated (or covered) by ice and tholin-like organics. Spatial changes in the color and polarization can be explained by particle fragmentation.

We analyse the B, V and R-band images to describe the dusty cometary coma and to investigate its brightness, colours and dust production rate. The spectra cover the wavelength range of 3600÷7070 Å. No emissions which are expected in this wavelength region were detected above the 3$σ$ level. The continuum shows a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity along dispersion of (9.3$\pm$1.1)% per 1000 Å. A dust-loss rate was derived using the obtained values and under the different model assumptions. Our simulations clearly indicate that to retrieve dust production from the observational Af$ρ$ parameter is an ambiguous task. The result of such a procedure is strongly dependent on dynamical (e.g. effective density and cross-section) as well as optical (e.g. scattering coefficient and phase function) characteristics of dust grains. A variation of the mentioned parameters can lead to dramatic changes in the evaluation of mass production. We demonstrate that the dynamic and optical properties are interconnected via the microscopic properties of dust grains (effective size and porosity).

Such dispersion cannot be characterized with an average color slope. We also observe Comet C/2013 UQ4 (Catalina) in infrared using Spitzer and find no significant CO/CO$_{2}$ gaseous species in its coma. Therefore, we classify Comet C/2013 UQ4 (Catalina) as a dust-rich comet and attribute the measured color slope to its dust. We analyze the color slope using the model of agglomerated debris particles and conclude that the C/2013 UQ4 coma was chemically heterogeneous, consisting of at least two components. The first component producing the bluest color is consistent with Mg-rich silicates. There are three different options for the second component producing the reddest color. This color is consistent with either Mg-Fe silicates, kerogen type II, or organic matter processed with a low dose of UV radiation.

We present a summary of the campaign of remote observations that supported the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission. Telescopes across the globe (and in space) followed comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from before Rosetta's arrival until nearly the end of mission in September 2016. These provided essential data for mission planning, large-scale context information for the coma and tails beyond the spacecraft, and a way to directly compare 67P with other comets. The observations revealed 67P to be a relatively `well behaved' comet, typical of Jupiter family comets and with activity patterns that repeat from orbit-to-orbit. Comparison between this large collection of telescopic observations and the in situ results from Rosetta will allow us to better understand comet coma chemistry and structure. This work is just beginning as the mission ends -- in this paper we present a summary of the ground-based observations and early results, and point to many questions that will be addressed in future studies.

We present an analysis of the photometric data of comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) observed at heliocentric distance of 4.4 - 4.2 AU. The comet C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) shows one significant activity, despite of its quite large heliocentric distance. The color indexes, dust mass-loss rates and radius of the comet are measured.

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of five nearly parabolic comets with eccentricity larger than 0.99 at heliocentric distances greater than 4 AU were performed. No molecular emission was observed for any studied comet and the entire cometary activity in all cases was attributed to dust production. Upper limits of the gas production rates for the main neutral molecules in the cometary comae were calculated. The derived values of dust apparent magnitudes were used to estimate the upper limit of the geometric cross-section of cometary nuclei (upper limits of radii range from 2 km to 28 km). Due to the poor sublimation of water ice at these distances from the Sun, other mechanisms triggering activity in comets are discussed.

We present the analysis of the polarimetric and spectral data obtained for the dynamically new comet C/2012\,J1 (Catalina) when it was at a distance of 3.17~AU from the Sun. The observations were made at the prime focus of the 6-m BTA telescope using the SCORPIO-2 focal reducer. The map of the distribution of linear polarization in the cometary coma was constructed. The calculated value of linear polarization was on average about $-2\%$. Spectral analysis of the cometary coma allowed us to detect the emission of the CN molecule in the (0--0) band. The gas production rate was derived using the Haser model and amounted to $3.7\times10^{23}$~molecules per second.

We present first measurements of the degree of linear polarization of distant comets C/2010 S1 (LINEAR) and C/2010 R1 (LINEAR) at heliocentric distances r= 5.9 - 7.0 AU. Observations were carried out with the SCORPIO-2 focal reducer at the 6-m telescope of the SAO RAS. Both comets showed considerable level of activity beyond a zone where water ice sublimation is negligible (up to 5 AU). Significant spatial variations both in the intensity and polarization are found in both comets. The slope of radial profiles of intensity changes gradually with the distance from the photocenter: from - 0.7 near the nucleus up to about - 1.3 for larger distances (up to 100000 km). The variation in polarization profiles indicates the non uniformity in the polarization distribution over the coma. The polarization degree over the coma gradually increases (in absolute value) with increasing the photocentric distance from of about - 1.9% up to - 3% for comet C/2010 S1 (LINEAR), and from of about - 2.5% up to - 3.5% for comet C/2010 R1 (LINEAR). These polarization values are significantly higher than typical value of the whole coma polarization (-1.5%) for comets at heliocentric distances less than 5 AU. The obtained photometric and polarimetric data are compared with those derived early for other comets at smaller heliocentric distances. Numerical modeling of light scattering characteristics was performed for media composed of particles with different refractive index, shape, and size. The computations were made by using the superposition T-matrix method. We obtained that for comet C/2010 S1 (LINEAR), the dust in the form of aggregates of overall radius R ~ 1.3 μm composed of N = 1000 spherical monomers with radius a = 0.1 μm, refractive index m = 1.65 + i 0.05, allows to obtain a satisfactory agreement between the results of polarimetric observations of comet C/2010 S1 and computations.

Spectrophotometric monitoring of distant comet C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) was performed with the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS and with the 2.5-m Nordic Optical Telescope between 2008 and 2013. During this period the comet was on the outbound segment of its orbit, between heliocentric distances of 8.36 au and 16.84 au. Analysis of the spectra revealed the presence of the CO$^+$ and N$_2^+$ emissions in the cometary coma at a distance of 8.36 au from the Sun. This distance is larger than ionic emissions have been detected in any previous objects. Only continuum, with no traces of emissions, was detected in the spectrum obtained in 2009 when the comet was at a distance of 9.86 au. From the spectra obtained in 2008, average column densities of 2.04$\times$10$^9$ mol cm$^{-2}$ for N$_2^+$ and 3.26$\times$10$^{10}$ mol cm$^{-2}$ for CO$^+$ were measured in the cometary coma. The derived values correspond to N$_2^+$/CO$^+$=0.06 within the projected slit. The parameter, which is used as an indicator of cometary activity, was measured as 2000 cm in 2008, and 800 cm in 2009 and 2011. The values correspond to dust production rates between 10-20 kg s$^{-1}$, 4-6 kg s$^{-1}$ and 3-5 kg s$^{-1}$ at 8.36, 9.86, and 13.40 au respectively. There is an obvious correlation between the decrease of the dust production rate of the nucleus and the disappearance of the emissions in the spectrum of C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) at heliocentric distances greater than 9 au. The colors and size of the nucleus of C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) were estimated from the images obtained during the late stage at a heliocentric distance of 16.84 au, when the activity had probable ceased. The B-V and V-R colors were estimated to be 1.07$\pm$0.05 and 0.54$\pm$0.03 respectively. The effective nucleus radius of 48$\pm$2 km is in agreement with the previously published results, obtained from the observations of the comet during its early inactive stage.
