Decrease in the orbital period of dwarf nova OY Carinae

We have measured the orbital light curve of dwarf nova OY Carinae on 8 separate occasions between 1997 September and 2005 December. The measurements were made in white light using CCD photometers on the Mt Canopus 1 m telescope. We have measured the orbital light curve of dwarf nova OY Carinae on 8 separate occasions between 1997 September and 2005 December. The measurements were made in white light using CCD photometers on the Mt Canopus 1 m telescope. The time of eclipse in 2005 December was 168 +- 5 s earlier than that predicted by the Wood et al.(1989) ephemeris. Using the times of eclipse from our measurements and the compilation of published measurements by Pratt et al (1999) we find that the observational data are inconsistent with a constant period and indicate that the orbital period is decreasing by 5+-1 X 10^-12 s/s. This is too fast to be explained by gravitational radiation emission. It is possible that the change is cyclic with a period greater than about 80 years. This is much longer than typical magnetic activity cycles and may be due to the presence of a third object in the system. Preliminary estimates suggest that this is a brown dwarf with mass about 0.016 Msun and orbital radius >= 17 AU.

We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for HI radio-selected galaxies, Hopcat. Of the 4315 HI radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (Hipass) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84%) galaxies. We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for HI radio-selected galaxies, Hopcat. Of the 4315 HI radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (Hipass) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84%) galaxies. Of these, 1798 (42%) have confirmed optical velocities and 848 (20%) are single matches without confirmed velocities. Some galaxy matches are members of galaxy groups. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16%) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6%) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11%), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5%) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these 'blank fields' are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions.
Isolated 'Dark galaxy' candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of ABj < 1 mag and the blank fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an ABj extinction < 1 mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the Hipass survey.

The HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) Catalogue forms the largest uniform catalogue of HI sources compiled to date, with 4,315 sources identified purely by their HI content. The catalogue data comprise the southern region declination <+2 deg of HIPASS, the first blind HI survey to cover the entire southern sky. RMS noise for this survey is 13 mJy/beam and the velocity range is -1,280 to 12,700 km/s. Data search, verification and parametrization methods are discussed along with a description of measured quantities. Full catalogue data are made available to the astronomical community including positions, velocities, velocity widths, integrated fluxes and peak flux densities. Also available are on-sky moment maps, position-velocity moment maps and spectra of catalogue sources. A number of local large-scale features are observed in the space distribution of sources including the Super-Galactic plane and the Local Void. Notably, large-scale structure is seen at low Galactic latitudes, a region normally obscured at optical wavelengths.
