SNhunt151: an explosive event inside a dense cocoon

Abstract:
SNhunt151 was initially classified as a supernova (SN) impostor (nonterminal outburst of a massive star). It exhibited a slow increase in luminosity, lasting about 450 d, followed by a major brightening that reaches M_V ~ -18 mag. SNhunt151 was initially classified as a supernova (SN) impostor (nonterminal outburst of a massive star). It exhibited a slow increase in luminosity, lasting about 450 d, followed by a major brightening that reaches M_V ~ -18 mag. No source is detected to M_V > -13 mag in archival images at the position of SNhunt151 before the slow rise. Low-to-mid-resolution optical spectra obtained during the pronounced brightening show very little evolution, being dominated at all times by multicomponent Balmer emission lines, a signature of interaction between the material ejected in the new outburst and the pre-existing circumstellar medium. We also analyzed mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope, detecting a source at the transient position in 2014 and 2015. Overall, SNhunt151 is spectroscopically a Type IIn SN, somewhat similar to SN2009ip. However, there are also some differences, such as a slow pre-discovery rise, a relatively broad light-curve peak showing a longer rise time (~ 50 d) and a slower decline, along with a negligible change in the temperature around the peak (T < 10^4 K). We suggest that SNhunt151 is the result of an outburst, or a SN explosion, within a dense circumstellar nebula, similar to those embedding some luminous blue variables like Eta Carinae and originating from past mass-loss events.

We present optical spectropolarimetry and spectroscopy of the broad-lined Type Ic (Ic-bl) SN 2014ad. Our spectropolarimetric observations cover 7 epochs, from -2 days to 66 days after V-band maximum, and the spectroscopic data were acquired from -2 days to +107 days. The photospheric velocity estimates showed ejecta speeds similar to those of SN 1998bw and other SNe associated with GRBs. The spectropolarimetric data revealed aspherical outer ejecta and a nearly spherical interior. The polarisation associated with O I λ7774 and the Ca II infrared triplet suggests a clumpy and highly asymmetrical distribution of these two species within the ejecta. Furthermore it was shown that the two line forming regions must have been spatially distinct and oxygen was found to have higher velocities than calcium. Another oxygen line-forming region was also identified much closer to the core of the explosion and distributed in a spherical shell. It is difficult to reconcile the geometry of the deeper ejecta with a jet driven explosion, but the high ejecta velocities of SN 2014ad are typical of those observed in SNe Ic-bl with GRBs, and the behaviour of the oxygen and calcium line-forming regions is consistent with fully jet-driven models. The metallicity of the host galaxy of SN 2014ad was also calculated and compared to that of the hosts of other SNe Ic-bl with and without GRBs, but due to the overlap in the two populations no conclusion could be drawn.

Optical observations of the type IIb SN 2013df from a few days to about 250 days after explosion are presented. These observations are complemented with UV photometry taken by \textit{SWIFT} up to 60 days post-explosion. The double-peak optical light curve is similar to those of SNe 1993J and 2011fu although with different decline and rise rates. From the modelling of the bolometric light curve, we have estimated that the total mass of synthesised $^{56}$Ni in the explosion is $\sim0.1$ M$_{\odot}$, while the ejecta mass is $0.8-1.4$ M$_{\odot}$ and the explosion energy $0.4-1.2 \times 10^{51}$erg. In addition, we have estimated a lower limit to the progenitor radius ranging from $64-169$ $R_{\odot}$. The spectral evolution indicates that SN 2013df had a hydrogen envelope similar to SN 1993J ($\sim 0.2$ M$_{\odot}$). The line profiles in nebular spectra suggest that the explosion was asymmetric with the presence of clumps in the ejecta, while the [O\,{\sc i}] $λ$$λ$$6300$, $6364$ luminosities, may indicate that the progenitor of SN 2013df was a relatively low mass star ( $\sim 12-13 $ M$_{\odot}$).

Recent observations by Mauerhan et al. have shown the unprecedented transition of the previously identified luminous blue variable (and supernova impostor) SN 2009ip to a real Type IIn supernova (SN) explosion. We present high-cadence optical imaging of SN 2009ip obtained between 2012 UT Sep. 23.6 and Oct. 9.6, using 0.3-0.4 meter aperture telescopes from the Coral Towers Observatory in Cairns, Australia. The light curves show well-defined phases, including very rapid brightening early on (0.5 mag in 6 hr observed during the night of Sep. 24), a transition to a much slower rise between Sep. 25 and Sep. 28, and a plateau/peak around Oct. 7. These changes are coincident with the reported spectroscopic changes that, most likely, mark the start of a strong interaction between the fast SN ejecta and a dense circumstellar medium formed during the earlier LBV eruptions. In the 16-day observing period SN 2009ip brightened by 3.7 mag from I = 17.4 mag on Sep. 23.6 (MI = -14.2) to I = 13.7 mag (MI = -17.9) on Oct. 9.6, radiating ~2x10^49 erg in the optical wavelength range. Currently, SN 2009ip is more luminous than most Type IIP SNe and comparable to other Type IIn SNe.

In this paper we investigate the properties of SN 2009E, which exploded in a relatively nearby spiral galaxy (NGC 4141) and that is probably the faintest 1987A-like supernova discovered so far. Spectroscopic observations which started about 2 months after the supernova explosion, highlight significant differences between SN 2009E and the prototypical SN 1987A. Modelling the data of SN 2009E allows us to constrain the explosion parameters and the properties of the progenitor star, and compare the inferred estimates with those available for the similar SNe 1987A and 1998A. The light curve of SN 2009E is less luminous than that of SN 1987A and the other members of this class, and the maximum light curve peak is reached at a slightly later epoch than in SN 1987A. Late-time photometric observations suggest that SN 2009E ejected about 0.04 solar masses of 56Ni, which is the smallest 56Ni mass in our sample of 1987A-like events. Modelling the observations with a radiation hydrodynamics code, we infer for SN 2009E a kinetic plus thermal energy of about 0.6 foe, an initial radius of ~7 x 10^12 cm and an ejected mass of ~19 solar masses. The photospheric spectra show a number of narrow (v~1800 km/s) metal lines, with unusually strong Ba II lines. The nebular spectrum displays narrow emission lines of H, Na I, [Ca II] and [O I], with the [O I] feature being relatively strong compared to the [Ca II] doublet. The overall spectroscopic evolution is reminiscent of that of the faint 56Ni-poor type II-plateau supernovae. This suggests that SN 2009E belongs to the low-luminosity, low 56Ni mass, low-energy tail in the distribution of the 1987A-like objects in the same manner as SN 1997D and similar events represent the faint tail in the distribution of physical properties for normal type II-plateau supernovae.

We have obtained limited photometric and spectroscopic data for Supernova (SN) 2008bk in NGC 7793, primarily at >~ 150 d after explosion. We find that it is a Type II-Plateau (II-P) SN which most closely resembles the low-luminosity SN 1999br in NGC 4900. Given the overall similarity between the observed light curves and colors of SNe 2008bk and 1999br, we infer that the total visual extinction to SN 2008bk (A_V=0.065 mag) must be almost entirely due to the Galactic foreground, similar to what has been assumed for SN 1999br. We confirm the identification of the putative red supergiant (RSG) progenitor star of the SN in high-quality g'r'i' images we had obtained in 2007 at the Gemini-South 8 m telescope. Little ambiguity exists in this progenitor identification, qualifying it as the best example to date, next to the identification of the star Sk -69 202 as the progenitor of SN 1987A. From a combination of photometry of the Gemini images with that of archival, pre-SN, Very Large Telescope JHK_s images, we derive an accurate observed spectral energy distribution (SED) for the progenitor. We find from nebular strong-intensity emission-line indices for several HII regions near the SN that the metallicity in the environment is likely subsolar (Z~0.6 Z_Sun). The observed SED of the star agrees quite well with synthetic SEDs obtained from model red supergiant atmospheres with effective temperature T_eff=3600+/-50 K. We find, therefore, that the star had a bolometric luminosity with respect to the Sun of log(L_bol/L_Sun)=4.57+/-0.06 and radius R_star=496+/-34 R_Sun at ~6 months prior to explosion. Comparing the progenitor's properties with theoretical massive-star evolutionary models, we conclude that the RSG progenitor had an initial mass in the range of 8--8.5 M_Sun. (Abridged.)
