Clues on the presence and segregation of very massive stars in the Sunburst Lyman-continuum cluster at z=2.37

We report the identification of very massive stars (VMS; mass $> 100$\,\msun) that may be segregated in the center of the young massive star cluster at $z$=2.37 hosted in the lensed galaxy called {\tt Sunburst} galaxy. This result is based on two pieces of evidence: (1) VLT/MUSE spectra of several multiple images of the same star cluster show key spectral signatures of VMS, such as the \heii\ broad emission, \nivblue\ emission, and an \niv\ P-Cygni profile. In particular, \heii\ is broad ($\sim1610\pm300$ \kms), with an equivalent width of 3Å,\ and asymmetric profile. These features require an extremely young ($\sim2.5$ Myr) stellar population component in which the masses of the stars exceed 100~\msun. When a Salpeter initial mass function and BPASS models for normal massive stars are assumed, the observed spectral features require $\sim$400 VMS. (2) The same star cluster is detected at a signal-to-noise ratio of~$\sim100$ in the Lyman continuum domain ($λ< 900$Å). The Lyman continuum emission emerges from a region with a radius that is at least twice smaller than what is observed at 1700Å~(independently of magnification) and is located in the center of the cluster. After delensing, the effective radii in absolute scales are R$_{\tt eff}[{\tt LyC}]\sim4.7 \pm 1.5$ pc and R$_{\tt eff}[1700]= 7.8 \pm 1.4$ pc. The Lyman continuum radiation is mainly produced by hot and massive stars, which implies that their spatial distribution (including that of VMS) is preferentially more confined in the central parts of the cluster. Approximately 400 VMS hosted by a cluster of $\sim 10^7$ \msun\ produce $\sim$15\% of the escaping Lyman continuum photons, and the remaining photons are produced by other massive early-type stars.

We report new nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot <= 30 pc) discovered in our search for nearby ultracool dwarfs (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) at low Galactic latitude (|b| < 15 degr) over 4,800 square degrees in the DENIS database. We used late-M (>=M8.0), L, and T dwarfs with accurate trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate the M_J versus I-J colour-luminosity relation. The resulting photometric distances have standard errors of ~15%, which we used to select candidates d_phot <= 30 pc. We measured proper motions from multi-epoch images found in the public archives ALADIN, DSS, 2MASS, DENIS, with at least three distinct epochs and time baselines of 10 to 21 years. We then used a Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff to select 28 candidates as ultracool dwarfs (M8.0--L8.0) and to reject one as a distant red star. No T dwarf candidates were found in this search which required an object to be detected in all three DENIS bands. Our low-resolution optical spectra confirmed that 26 of them were indeed ultracool dwarfs, with spectral types from M8.0 to L5.5. Two contaminants and one rejected by the Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff were all reddened F-K main sequence stars. 20 of these 26 ultracool dwarfs are new nearby ultracool dwarf members, three L dwarfs within 15 pc with one L3.5 at only ~10 pc. We determine a stellar density of \barΦ_J cor=(1.64 +- 0.46).10^{-3} dwarfs pc^{-3} mag^{-1} over 11.1 <= M_J <= 13.1 based on that sample of M8--L3.5 ultracool dwarfs. Our ultracool dwarf density value is in good agreement with the Cruz et al. measurement of the ultracool dwarf density at high Galactic latitude.

Discovery of a nearby M9 dwarf

We report the discovery of a new M9.0 dwarf at only 8.2 pc, which we identified in our search for nearby ultracool dwarf (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) in the DENIS database. We measure a very high proper motion of 2.5 arc-sec/yr. The PC3 index measured from its low-resolution spectrum gives a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2 pc. This makes it the third closest M9.0 dwarf.

These stars might be of interest as probes of interstellar absorption. For the red dwarfs we derive spectral types and spectroscopic distances, using a new calibration of the PC3 spectral index to absolute magnitudes in the I, J, H and K photometric bands.
We confirm 2 new members of the 12 pc volume (2 new M8.5), and one M7.5 NLTT object closer than 10pc. We also show that one quarter of the stars with photometric distances under 30 pc have too small a proper motion for inclusion in the NLTT catalog.

This paper reports updated results on our systematic mining of the DENIS database for nearby very cool M-dwarfs (M6V-M8V, 2.0<I-J<3.0, photometric distance within 30 pc), We calibrate the DENIS (M_I, I-J) colour-luminosity relationship from M dwarfs with well measured parallaxes (HIP, GCTP,...), obtaining distance errors for single dwarfs of 25%. Using proper motions measured on archive Schmidt plates for stars that meet the photometric selection criteria, we eliminate the giants by a Reduced Proper Motion cutoff, which is significantly more selective than a simple proper motion cutoff.
Here we present new data for 62 red dwarf candidates selected over 5700 square degrees in the DENIS database. 26 of those originate in the 2100 square degrees analysed in Paper I, with improved parameters here, and 36 were found in 3600 additional square degrees. 25 of those are new nearby dwarfs. We determine from that sample of 62 stars a stellar density for 12.0<M_I<14.0 of 2.2(+-0.4)E-3 stars/pc^3/mag. This value is consistent with photometric luminosity functions measured from deeper and smaller-field observations, but not with the nearby star luminosity function. In addition we cross-identified the NLTT and DENIS catalogues to find 15 similar stars, in parts of the sky not yet covered by the colour-selected search.

Gravitational tidal effects on galactic open clusters

We have investigated the 2-D stellar distribution in the outer parts of three nearby open clusters: NGC 2287 (=M41), NGC 2516, and NGC 2548 (=M48). Wide-field star counts have been performed in two colours on pairs of digitized ESO and SRC Schmidt plates, allowing us to select likely cluster members in the colour-magnitude diagrams. Cluster tidal extensions were emphasized using a wavelet transform. Taking into account observational biases, namely the galaxy clustering and differential extinction in the Galaxy, we have associated these stellar overdensities with real open cluster structures stretched by the galactic gravitational field. As predicted by theory and simulations, and despite observational limitations, we detected a general elongated (prolate) shape in a direction parallel to the galactic Plane, combined with tidal tails extended perpendicularly to it. This geometry is due both to the static galactic tidal field and the heating up of the stellar system when crossing the Disk. The time varying tidal field will deeply affect the cluster dynamical evolution, and we emphasize the importance of adiabatic heating during the Disk-shocking. In the case of NGC 2548, our dating of the last shocking with the Plane (based on a tidal clump) is consistent with its velocity. During the 10-20 Z-oscillations experienced by a cluster before its dissolution in the Galaxy, crossings through the galactic Disk contribute to at least 15% of the total mass loss. Using recent age estimations published for open clusters, we find a destruction time-scale of about 600 Myr for clusters in the solar neighbourhood.

We extend the work developed in previous papers on microlensing with a selection of variable stars. We use the Pixel Method to select variable stars on a set of 2.5 x 10**6 pixel light curves in the LMC Bar presented elsewhere. The previous treatment was done in order to optimise the detection of long timescale variations (larger than a few days) and we further optimise our analysis for the selection of Long Timescale and Long Period Variables (LT&LPV). We choose to perform a selection of variable objects as comprehensive as possible, independent of periodicity and of their position on the colour magnitude diagram. We detail the different thresholds successively applied to the light curves, which allow to produce a catalogue of 632 variable objects. We present a table with the coordinate of each variable, its EROS magnitudes at one epoch and an indicator of blending in both colours, together with a finding chart.
A cross-correlation with various catalogues shows that 90% of those variable objects were undetected before, thus enlarging the sample of LT&LPV previously known in this area by a factor of 10. Due to the limitations of both the Pixel Method and the data set, additional data -- namely a longer baseline and near infrared photometry -- are required to further characterise these variable stars, as will be addressed in subsequent papers.

We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39), identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer, with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS 1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious target for further detailed studies.

We report the detection of $\sim$ 1500 RR Lyrae of Bailey type ab located in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). These variables have been detected on two ESO Schmidt fields centred on (l,b)=(3.1 deg,-7.1 deg) and (6.6 deg, -10.8 deg), covering an area of $\sim$50 square degree. We present a surface density map of Sgr based on the spatial distribution of these RRab, allowing us to trace its structure in a region that was still almost unexplored between b=-14 deg and b=-4 deg. We present the results of the fit of different models to the density profile of Sgr. The best fit to the core of Sgr is an exponential with a scale length of 4.1 deg along the major axis. When we look at the extension of Sgr we find a break (significant at the $\sim2σ$ level) in the slope of the surface density along the main axis of Sgr. The nearly flat (or at least very slowly decreasing) profile in the outer region of Sgr shows that this dwarf galaxy is probably extending even further out our fields.

We present the discovery and spectroscopic identification of two very high proper motion ancient white dwarf stars, found in a systematic proper motion survey. Their kinematics and apparent magnitude clearly indicate that they are halo members, while their optical spectra are almost identical to the recently identified cool Halo white dwarf WD0346+246. Canonical stellar halo models predict a white dwarf volume density of two orders of magnitude less than the approx 7*10^{-4} Solar masses per pc^{-3} inferred from this survey. With the caveat that the sample size is very small, it appears that a significant fraction, about 10%, of the local dark matter halo is in the form of very old, cool, white dwarfs.

We present two catalogues of galaxies in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 496. The first one includes 3,879 galaxies located in a region of roughly 1.3 degrees from the cluster centre. It has been obtained from a list of more than 35,000 galaxy candidates detected by scanning part of a Schmidt photographic plate taken in the b_J band. Positions are very accurate in this catalogue but magnitudes are not. This led us to perform CCD imaging observations in the V and R bands to calibrate these photographic magnitudes. A second catalogue gives a list of galaxies with CCD magnitudes in the V (239 galaxies) and R (610 galaxies) bands for a much smaller region in the centre of the cluster. These two catalogues will be combined with a redshift catalogue of 466 galaxies (Durret et al. 1999) to investigate the cluster properties at optical wavelengths (Durret et al. in preparation), as a complement to previous X-ray studies by a member of our group (Pislar 1998).

This is an investigation of the period-luminosity relation of classical Cepheids in samples of different metallicity. It is based on 481 Cepheids in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from the blue and red filter CCD observations (most similar to V_J & R_J) of the French EROS microlensing project. The data-set is complete and provides an excellent basis for a differential analysis between LMC and SMC. In comparison to previous studies of effects on the PL-relation, the EROS data-set offers extremely well-sampled light curves and well-filled instability strips. This allows reliable separation of Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental and the first overtone mode and derivation of differential reddening. Our main result concerns the determination of distances to galaxies which are inferred by using the LMC as a base and using two color photometry to establish the amount of reddening. We find a zero-point offset between SMC and LMC which amounts to a difference between inferred and true distance modulus of 0.14 \pm 0.06 mag in the VI_c system. The offset is exactly the same in both sets of PL-relations - of the fundamental and of the first overtone mode Cepheids. No effect is seen on the slopes of the PL-relations, although the fundamental and the first overtone mode Cepheids have different PL slopes. We attribute the color and the zero-point offset to the difference in metallicity between the SMC and LMC Cepheids. A metallicity effect of that small magnitude still has important consequencies for the inferred Cepheid distances and the determination of H_0. When applied to recent estimates based on HST Cepheid observations, our metallicity dependence makes the low-H_0 values (Sandage et al. 1994) higher and the high-H_0 values (Freedman et al. 1994b) lower, thus bringing those

Recent HST determinations of the expansion's rate of the Universe (the Hubble constant, H_0) assumed that the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation at V and I are independent of metallicity (Freedman, et al., 1996, Saha et al., 1996, Tanvir et al., 1995). The three groups obtain different vales for H_0. We note that most of this discrepancy stems from the asumption (by both groups) that the Period-Luminosity relation is independent of metallicity. We come to this conclusion as a result of our study of the Period-Luminosity relation of 481 Cepheids with 3 millions two colour measurements in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud obtained as a by-product of the EROS microlensing survey. We find that the derived interstellar absorption corrections are particularly sensitive to the metallicity and when our result is applied to recent estimates based on HST Cepheids observations it makes the low-H_0 values higher and the high-H_0 value lower, bringing those discrepant estimates into agrement around $H_0 \approx 70 km/s Mpc^{-1}$.

We present final results from the first phase of the EROS search for gravitational microlensing of stars in the Magellanic Clouds by unseen deflectors (machos: MAssive Compact Halo Objects). The search is sensitive to events with time scales between 15 minutes and 200 days corresponding to deflector masses in the range 1.e-7 to a few solar masses. Two events were observed that are compatible with microlensing by objects of mass of about 0.1 Mo. By comparing the results with the expected number of events for various models of the Galaxy, we conclude that machos in the mass range [1.e-7, 0.02] Mo make up less than 20% (95% C.L.) of the Halo dark matter.

We present the light curve of an unusual variable object, DUO 2, detected during the search for microlensing events by the DUO project. The star remained stable for more than 150 days before it brightened by more than two magnitudes in 6 days in the B and R bands. The light curves are achromatic during the variability. We consider possible explanations of the photometric behavior, with particular emphasis on the binary lens interpretation of the event. The masses of the lenses are quite small, with the companion possibly in the range of a brown dwarf or even a few times of Jupiter. We report evidence of blending of the source by a companion through the first detection of shift in the light centroid among all the microlensing experiments. This shift sets a lower limit of $0.3^{\prime\prime}$ on the separation between the stars. The best lens model obtained requires moderate blending, which was what motivated us to check the centroid shift that was subsequently found. The best lens model predicts a separation of $1^{\prime\prime}$ between the two blended stars. This prediction was recently tested using two CCD images taken under good seeing conditions. Both images show two components. Their separation and position angle are in good agreement with our model.

We present CCD phase-binned light curves at 490 nm for 97 Cepheid variable stars in the bar of the LMC. The photometry was obtained as part of the French EROS project and has excellent phase coverage, permitting accurate decomposition into Fourier components. We identify as `sinusoidal' or s-Cepheids those stars with periods less than 5.5 d and small second-harmonic components. These stars comprise $\sim$30% of our sample and most form a sequence $\sim$1 mag brighter than the LMC classical Cepheids in the period-luminosity diagram. They are also generally bluer and have lower-amplitude light curves. We infer that the s-Cepheids are first-overtone pulsators because, when their periods are converted to expected fundamental-mode values, they obey a common period-luminosity-colour relation with classical Cepheids. This also confirms the reality of the colour term in the Cepheid period-luminosity-colour relation. Further, the blue edge of the classical Cepheid instability strip agrees well with the theoretical calculations for the fundamental mode made by Chiosi et al. (1993) for the Hertzsprung-Russell and period-luminosity diagrams, but we find that our observed s-Cepheids are $>0.2$ mag brighter and bluer than the Chiosi et al.\ predictions for the first-overtone. We identify a number of features in plots of our stars' Fourier-component amplitude ratios and phase differences. These features have been identified with resonances between different pulsation modes. In the LMC we find these features seem to occur at periods very similar to Galactic ones for classical Cepheids, but at different periods for s-Cepheids. We discover a double-mode Cepheid in the LMC, for which $P({\rm first overtone})/P({\rm fundamental}) = 0.710 \pm 0.001$, very similar to observed ratios for Galactic double-mode Cepheids.

The spectrum and the colours of EROS1, the first candidate, reveal that it is a moderately reddened main-sequence B star with H emission lines. The presence of H absorption lines seems to be more the signature of a normal star than that of a cataclysmic variable. As to EROS2, the second candidate, its spectrum and photometry are those of an unreddened normal main-sequence A star, but it cannot be totally excluded that they represent those of a nova in the pre-outburst phase. Although it is not yet possible to exclude intrinsic stellar variations, the interpretation in terms of microlensing effects remain the most natural one.
