The excess radio background detected by ARCADE 2 represents a puzzle within the standard cosmological model. There is no clear viable astrophysical solution, and therefore, it might indicate the presence of new physics. Radiative decays of a relic neutrino $ν_i$ (either $i=1$, or $i=2$, or $i=3$) into a sterile neutrino $ν_{\rm s}$, assumed to be quasi-degenerate, provide a solution that currently evades all constraints posed by different cosmological observations and reproduces very well the ARCADE 2 data. We find a very good fit to the ARCADE 2 data with best fit values $τ_i = 1.46 \times 10^{21}\,{\rm s}$ and $Δm_i = 4.0 \times 10^{-5}\,{\rm eV}$, where $τ_i$ is the lifetime and $Δm_i$ is the mass difference between the decaying active neutrino and the sterile neutrino. On the other hand, if relic neutrino decays do not explain ARCADE 2 data, then these place a stringent constraint $Δm_i^{3/2} τ_i \gtrsim 2 \times 10^{14}\,{\rm eV}^{3/2}\,{\rm s}$ in the range $1.4 \times 10^{-5} \, {\rm eV} < Δm_i < 2.5 \times 10^{-4}\,{\rm eV}$. The solution also predicts a stronger 21 cm absorption global signal than the predicted one from the $Λ$CDM model, with a contrast brightness temperature $T_{21} = -238^{+21}_{-20}\,{\rm mK}$ ($99\%$ C.L.) at redshift $z\simeq 17$. This is in mild tension with the even stronger signal found by the EDGES collaboration, $T_{21} = - 500^{+200}_{-500}\,{\rm mK} $, suggesting that this might have been overestimated, possibly receiving a contribution from some unidentified foreground source.

In the light of the evidence of a gravitational wave background from the NANOGrav 15yr data set, we reconsider the split majoron model as a new physics extension of the standard model able to generate a needed contribution to solve the current tension between the data and the standard interpretation in terms of inspiraling supermassive black hole massive binaries. In the split majoron model the seesaw right-handed neutrinos acquire Majorana masses from spontaneous symmetry breaking of global $U(1)_{B-L}$ in a strong first order phase transition of a complex scalar field occurring above the electroweak scale. The final vacuum expectation value couples to a second complex scalar field undergoing a low scale phase transition occurring after neutrino decoupling. Such a coupling enhances the strength of this second low scale first order phase transition and can generate a sizeable primordial gravitational wave background contributing to the NANOGrav 15yr signal. Some amount of extra-radiation is generated after neutron-to-proton ration freeze-out but prior to nucleosynthesis. This can be either made compatible with current upper bound from primordial deuterium measurements or even be used to solve a potential deuterium problem. Moreover, the free streaming length of light neutrinos can be suppressed by their interactions with the resulting majoron background and this mildly ameliorates existing cosmological tensions. Thus cosmological observations nicely provide independent motivations for the model.

We explore the origin of Majorana masses within the majoron model and how this can lead to the generation of a distinguishable primordial stochastic background of gravitational waves. We first show how in the simplest majoron model only a contribution from cosmic string can be within the reach of planned experiments. We then consider extensions containing multiple complex scalars, demonstrating how in this case a spectrum comprising contributions from both a strong first order phase transition and cosmic strings can naturally emerge. We show that the interplay between multiple scalar fields can amplify the phase transition signal, potentially leading to double peaks over the wideband sloped spectrum from cosmic strings. We also underscore the possibility of observing such a gravitational wave background to provide insights into the reheating temperature of the universe. We conclude highlighting how the model can be naturally combined with scenarios addressing the origin of matter of the universe, where baryogenesis occurs via leptogenesis and a right-handed neutrino plays the role of dark matter.

The right-handed (RH) Higgs-induced neutrino mixing (RHINO) model explains neutrino masses and origin of matter in the universe within a unified picture. The mixing, effectively described by a dimension five operator, is responsible both for the production of dark neutrinos, converting a small fraction of seesaw neutrinos acting as source, and for their decays. We show that including the production of source neutrinos from Higgs portal interactions, their abundance can thermalise prior to the onset of source-dark neutrino oscillations, resulting into an enhanced production of dark neutrinos that thus can play the role of decaying dark matter (DM) for a much higher seesaw scale. This can be above the sphaleron freeze-out temperature and as high as $\sim 100\,{\rm TeV}$, so that strong thermal resonant leptogenesis for the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry is viable. We obtain a $\sim 1\,{\rm TeV}$--$1\,{\rm PeV}$ allowed dark neutrino mass range. Intriguingly, their decays can also explain a neutrino flux excess at ${\cal O}(100\,{\rm TeV})$ energies recently confirmed by the IceCube collaboration analysing 7.5yr HESE data. Our results also point to an effective scale for Higgs portal interactions nicely identifiable with the grandunified scale and many orders of magnitude below the effective scale for the mixing. We explain this hierarchy in a UV-complete model with a very heavy fermion as mediator: the first scale corresponds to the fundamental scale of new physics, while the second is much higher because of a very small coupling identifiable with a symmetry breaking parameter. Therefore, RHINO realises a simple unified model of neutrino masses and origin of matter in the universe currently under scrutiny at neutrino telescopes and potentially embeddable within a grandunified model.

The understanding of the physical processes that lead to the origin of matter in the early Universe, creating both an excess of matter over anti-matter that survived until the present and a dark matter component, is one of the most fascinating challenges in modern science. The problem cannot be addressed within our current description of fundamental physics and, therefore, it currently provides a very strong evidence of new physics. Solutions can either reside in a modification of the standard model of elementary particle physics or in a modification of the way we describe gravity, based on general relativity, or at the interface of both. We will mainly discuss the first class of solutions. Traditionally, models that separately explain either the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe or dark matter have been proposed. However, in the last years there has also been an accreted interest and intense activity on scenarios able to provide a unified picture of the origin of matter in the early universe. In this review we discuss some of the main ideas emphasising primarily those models that have more chances to be experimentally tested during next years. Moreover, after a general discussion, we will focus on extensions of the standard model that can also address neutrino masses and mixing, since this is currently the only evidence of physics beyond the standard model coming directly from particle physics and it is, therefore, reasonable they might also provide a solution to the problem of the origin of matter in the universe.

We show how the generation of right-handed neutrino masses in Majoron models may be associated with a first-order phase transition and accompanied by the production of a stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs). We explore different energy scales with only renormalizable operators in the effective potential. If the phase transition occurs above the electroweak scale, the signal can be tested by future interferometers. We consider two possible energy scales for phase transitions below the electroweak scale. If the phase transition occurs at a GeV, the signal can be tested at LISA and provide a complementary cosmological probe to right-handed neutrino searches at the FASER detector. If the phase transition occurs below 100 keV, we find that the peak of the GW spectrum is two or more orders of magnitude below the putative NANOGrav GW signal at low frequencies, but well within reach of the SKA and THEIA experiments. We show how searches of very low frequency GWs are motivated by solutions to the Hubble tension in which ordinary neutrinos interact with the dark sector. We also present general calculations of the phase transition temperature and Euclidean action that apply beyond Majoron models.

We introduce a model in which the genesis of dark matter (DM) and neutrino masses is associated with a first order phase transition of a scalar singlet field. During the phase transition a source right-handed neutrino (RHN) acquires a spacetime-dependent mass dynamically, a small fraction of which is converted via resonant oscillations into a very weakly mixed dark RHN which decays to a dark matter RHN with the observed relic abundance. Neutrino masses are generated via a traditional two RHN type-I seesaw between a fourth RHN and the source neutrino. The gravitational waves produced during the phase transition have a peak frequency that increases with the DM mass, and are detectable at future gravitational wave interferometers for DM masses above ~ 1 MeV. Since the source RHNs are heavier than the electroweak scale, successful leptogenesis is also attainable.

If the EDGES anomaly will be confirmed, then there are two solutions, one for much longer and one for much shorter lifetimes than the age of the universe, showing how relic neutrino radiative decays can explain the anomaly in a simple way. We also show how to combine EDGES results with those from radio background observations, showing that potentially the ARCADE 2 excess can be also reproduced together with the EDGES anomaly within the proposed non-standard cosmological scenario. Our calculation of the specific intensity at the redshifts probed by EDGES can be also applied to the case of decaying dark matter and it also corrects a flawed expression appeared in previous literature.

We revisit a model in which neutrino masses and mixing are described by a two right-handed (RH) neutrino seesaw scenario, implying a strictly hierarchical light neutrino spectrum. A third decoupled RH neutrino, $N_{\rm DM}$ with mass $M_{\rm DM}$, plays the role of cold dark matter (DM) and is produced by the mixing with a source RH neutrino, $N_{\rm S}$ with mass $M_{\rm S}$, induced by Higgs portal interactions. The same interactions are also responsible for $N_{\rm DM}$ decays. We discuss in detail the constraints coming from DM abundance and stability conditions, showing that in the hierarchical case ($M_{\rm DM} \gg M_{\rm S}$) there is an allowed window on $M_{\rm DM}$, which necessarily implies a contribution from DM decays to the high-energy neutrino flux recently detected by IceCube. We also show how the model can explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis in the quasi-degenerate limit. In this case, the DM mass should be within the range 300 GeV $\lesssim M_{\rm S} < M_{\rm DM} \lesssim$ 10 PeV. We discuss the specific properties of this high-energy neutrino flux and show the predicted event spectrum for two exemplary cases. Although DM decays, with a relatively hard spectrum, cannot account for all the IceCube high-energy data, we illustrate how this extra source of high-energy neutrinos could reasonably explain some potential features in the observed spectrum. In this way, this represents a unified scenario for leptogenesis and DM that could be tested during the next years with more high-energy neutrino events.

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos.

We propose a scenario for obtaining a fractional "effective neutrino species" from a thermally produced particle which decays into a much lighter stable relic plus standard fermions. At lifetimes much longer than 1 sec, both the relic particles and the non-thermal neutrino component contribute to Dark Radiation. By increasing the stable-to-unstable particle mass ratio, the relic particle no longer acts as Dark Radiation but instead becomes a candidate for Warm Dark Matter with mass O(1keV - 100GeV). Interactions of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the thermal phase of the early universe may be the origin of the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry. This mechanism of baryogenesis implies stringent constraints on light and heavy Majorana neutrino masses. We derive an improved upper bound on the CP asymmetry in heavy neutrino decays which, together with the kinetic equations, yields an upper bound on all light neutrino masses of 0.1 eV. Lepton number changing processes at temperatures above the temperature T_B of baryogenesis can erase other, pre-existing contributions to the baryon asymmetry. We find that these washout processes become very efficient if the effective neutrino mass \tilde{m}_1 is larger than m_* \simeq 10^{-3} eV. All memory of the initial conditions is then erased. Hence, for neutrino masses in the range from (Δm^2_sol)^{1/2} \simeq 8*10^{-3} eV to (Δm^2_atm)^{1/2} \simeq 5*10^{-2} eV, which is suggested by neutrino oscillations, leptogenesis emerges as the unique source of the cosmological matter-antimatter asymmetry.

These models can be described in terms of the two parameters Delta N_nu^tot, constrained by the primordial Helium abundance Y_p measurement, and Delta N_nu^rho, constrained by a combination of CMB and primordial Deuterium data. Small deviations from standard BBN are suggested. Different non standard scenarios can be distinguished by a measurement of the difference Delta N_nu^f_nu=Delta N_nu^tot-Delta N_nu^rho. From the current data we estimate Delta N_nu^f_nu simeq -1.4^{+0.9}_{-1.4}, mildly disfavouring solutions with a low expansion rate, characterized by Delta N_nu^f_nu=0 and negative Delta N_nu^rho. Active-sterile neutrino mixing could be a viable explanation only for high values of Y_p gtrsim 0.24. The existence of large positive neutrino chemical potentials xi_i sim 0.05, implying Delta N_nu^rho simeq 0, would be a possible explanation of the data within the analyzed class of non standard BBN models. Interestingly it would also provide a way to evade the cosmological bounds for `class A 3+1' four neutrino mixing models. A scenario with a decaying sterile neutrino is also considered.

From the current cosmological observations of CMB and nuclear abundances we show, with an analytic procedure, that the total effective number of extra neutrino species $ΔN_ν^{\rm tot}< 0.3$. We also describe the possible signatures of non standard effects that could be revealed in future CMB observations. This cosmological information is then applied to neutrino mixing models. Taking into account the recent results from the SNO and SuperKamiokande experiments, disfavouring pure active to sterile neutrino oscillations, we show that all 4 neutrino mixing models, both of 2+2 and 3+1 type, lead to a full thermalization of the sterile neutrino flavor. Moreover such a sterile neutrino production excludes the possibility of an electron neutrino asymmetry generation and we conclude that $ΔN_ν^{\rm tot}\simeq 1$, in disagreement with the cosmological bound. This result is valid under the assumption that the initial neutrino asymmetries are small. We suggest the existence of a second sterile neutrino flavor, with mixing properties such to generate a large electron neutrino asymmetry, as a possible way out.

Active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early Universe: asymmetry generation at low |delta m^2| and the Landau-Zener approximation

Abstract:
It is well established that active-sterile neutrino oscillations generate large neutrino asymmetries for very small mixing angles ($\sin^2 2θ_0\lesssim 10^{-4}$), negative values of $δm^2$ and provided that $|δm^2|\gtrsim 10^{-4} {\rm eV^2}$. By numerically solving the quantum kinetic equations, we show that the generation still occurs at much lower values of $|δm^2|$. We also describe the borde…

By numerically solving the quantum kinetic equations, we show that the generation still occurs at much lower values of $|δm^2|$. We also describe the borders of the generation at small mixing angles and show how our numerical results can be analytically understood within the framework of the Landau-Zener approximation thereby extending previous work based on the adiabatic limit. This approximate approach leads to a fair description of the MSW dominated regime of the neutrino asymmetry evolution and is also able to correctly reproduce its final value. We also briefly discuss the impact that neutrino asymmetry generation could have on big bang nucleosynthesis, CMBR and relic neutrinos.

Abstract:
We show how active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early Universe can play an interesting role in explaining the current observations of CMBR anisotropies and light element abundances. We describe different possible phenomenological scenarios in the interpretation of present data and how active-sterile neutrino oscillations can provide a viable theoretical framework.

Abstract:
We deal with the problem of the final sign of the neutrino asymmetry generated by active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the Early Universe solving the full momentum dependent quantum kinetic equations. We study the parameter region $10^{-2} \stackrel{<}{\sim} |δm^2|/eV^2\le 10^3$. For a large range of $\sin^2 2θ_0$ values the sign of the neutrino asymmetry is fixed and does not oscillate. For…

For values of mixing parameters in the region $10^{-6}\stackrel{<}{\sim}\sin^{2}2θ_{0}\stackrel{<}{\sim} 3\times 10^{-4} ({\rm eV}^{2}/|δm^{2}|)$, the neutrino asymmetry appears to undergo rapid oscillations during the period where the exponential growth occurs. Our numerical results indicate that the oscillations are able to change the neutrino asymmetry sign. The sensitivity of the solutions and in particular of the final sign of lepton number to small changes in the initial conditions depends whether the number of oscillations is high enough. It is however not possible to conclude whether this effect is induced by the presence of a numerical error or is an intrinsic feature. As the amplitude of the statistical fluctuations is much lower than the numerical error, our numerical analysis cannot demonstrate the possibility of a chaotical generation of lepton domains. In any case this possibility is confined to a special region in the space of mixing parameters and it cannot spoil the compatibility of the $ν_μ\leftrightarrowν_{s}$ solution to the neutrino atmospheric data obtained assuming a small mixing of the $ν_{s}$ with an ${\rm eV}-τ$ neutrino.

The data on atmospheric neutrinos can be explained assuming the existence of oscillations between muon neutrinos and light sterile neutrinos with mixing close to maximal, and Delta_m^2 approximately equal to 3 E-3 (eV^2). This interpretation of the data is in potential conflict with the successes of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), since oscillations can result in a too large contribution of the sterile state to the energy density of the universe at the epoch of nucleosynthesis. The possibility to evade these cosmological constraints has been recently the object of some controversy. In this work we rediscuss this problem and find that the inclusion of a small mixing of the sterile state with tau neutrino can result in the generation of a large lepton asymmetry that strongly suppress the muon-sterile neutrino oscillations eliminating the possible conflict with BBN bounds. In this scheme the mass of the tau neutrino must be larger than few eV's and is compatible with cosmological bounds. Our calculation is performed using a Pauli-Boltzmann method. In this approach it is also possible to develop analytic calculations that allow physical insight in the processes considered and give support to the numerical results.

Entropy production in the Early Universe. A new mechanism
Authors:
P. Di Bari
Abstract:
We expose briefly the role of entropy in the early universe and in particular the importance of searching for new mechanisms of entropy production. We describe a mechanism that shows how entropy is produced during early annihilations and under which conditions the production is not negligible. A MeV tau neutrino provides an interesting application.
