Realization of the stationary integral solutions of steady state transonic accretion flow in spherical symmetry helps to understand accretion phenomena on various astrophysical objects. In recent years, attempts have been made to study accreting black hole systems as an example of autonomous dynamical systems. The fixed point analysis is used to study the transonic properties of accretion flow onto an astrophysical black hole, hence the nature of the phase orbits for the transonic flow solutions can be understood without constructing the integral solutions. Since a large-scale astrophysical fluid flow is vulnerable to external perturbation, one needs to ensure that the stationary accretion solutions are stable under perturbation. By adopting a time-dependent stability analysis scheme for the accretion flow, one demonstrates under which condition the perturbation will not diverge. It has also been observed that a space-time metric, dubbed the sonic metric, can be constructed to describe the propagation of the perturbation embedded within the accreting fluid, which mimics a black hole like spacetime within the accreting fluid, where the transonic surfaces can be identified with a black hole like horizons. Such identification is accomplished using the theory of causal structure - by constructing Carter-Penrose diagrams. An accreting black hole system, thus, can be perceived as a classical analogue gravity model naturally found in the universe. Hence, accretion phenomena onto astrophysical black holes can be looked upon from three apparently non-overlapping perspectives - astrophysical processes, theory of dynamical systems, and emergent gravity (alternatively, the analogue gravity) phenomena, respectively. The present article illustrates, by taking the simplest possible accretion flow model, how one can study astrophysical accretion processes from the aforementioned perspectives (Abridged).

Low angular momentum, general relativistic, axially symmetric accretion of hydrodynamic fluid onto Schwarzschild black holes may undergo more than one critical transition. To obtain the stationary integral solutions corresponding to such multi-critical accretion flow, one needs to employ numerical solutions of the corresponding fluid dynamics equations. In the present work, we develop a {\it{completely analytical}} solution scheme which may be used to find several trans-critical flow behaviours of aforementioned accretion, without explicitly solving the flow equations numerically. We study all possible geometric configurations of the flow profile, governed by all possible thermodynamic equations of state. We use Sturm's chain algorithm to find out how many physically acceptable critical points the accretion flow can have, and discuss the transition from the mono to the multi-critical flow profile, and related bifurcation phenomena. We thus illustrate, completely analytically, the application of certain aspects of the dynamical systems theory in the field of large scale astrophysical flow under the influence of strong gravity. Our work may possibly be generalized to calculate the maximal number of equilibrium points certain autonomous dynamical systems can have in general.

Analogue gravity models describe linear fluctuations of fluids as a massless scalar field propagating on stationary acoustic spacetimes constructed from the background flow. In this paper, we establish that this paradigm generalizes to arbitrary order nonlinear perturbations propagating on dynamical analogue spacetimes. Our results hold for all inviscid, spherically symmetric and barotropic non-relativistic flows in the presence of an external conservative force. We demonstrate that such fluids always admit a dynamical description governed by a coupled pair of wave and continuity equations. We provide an iterative approach to solve these equations about any known stationary solution to all orders in perturbation. In the process, we reveal that there exists a dynamical acoustic spacetime on which fluctuations of the mass accretion rate propagate. The dynamical acoustic spacetime is shown to have a well defined causal structure and curvature. In addition, we find a classical fluctuation relation for the acoustic horizon of the spacetime that admit scenarios wherein the horizon can grow as well as recede, with the latter being a result with no known analogue in black holes. As an example, we numerically investigate the Bondi flow accreting solution subject to exponentially damped time dependent perturbations. We find that second and higher order classical perturbations possess an acoustic horizon that oscillates and changes to a new stable size at late times. In particular, the case of a receding acoustic horizon is realized through `low frequency' perturbations. We discuss our results in the context of more general analogue models and its potential implications on astrophysical accretion flows.

For general relativistic, inviscid, axisymmetric flow around Kerr black hole one may choose different flow thickness. The stationary flow equations can be solved using methods of dynamical system to get transonic accretion flows , i.e, flow infalling in the blackhole that turns supersonic from subsonic with decreasing radial distance, or vice versa. This transonic flows are obtained by choosing the particular flow passing through critical points of phase portrait. For certain flow thickness like the one maintaining conical shape, the sonic point coincide with the critical point. But there are certain flows maintaining hydrostatic equilibrium, such as the one described by Novikov-Thorne, where the sonic point is not same as the critical point. We perturb the flow for both kind of flow and study the behaviour of linear perturbation which behaves like massless scalar field in some curved spacetime, known as, analogue space time. We draw the compactified causal structure, i.e, Penrose Carter diagram for both kind of analogue metric and prove that for both cases critical points are the acoustic horizons, whereas in the case where sonic points do not coincide with critical points, the sonic points are not the acoustic horizon, as one may expect from the definition of sound speed.

As of now, all analogue gravity models available in the literature deal with the emergence of an acoustic geometry through linear perturbations of transonic fluids only. It has never been investigated whether the analogue gravity phenomena is solely a consequence of linear perturbations, or rather a generic property of arbitrary perturbations of inhomogeneous, inviscid and irrotational fluids. In the present work, for the first time in the literature, we demonstrate that acoustic spacetimes may be formed through higher order non-linear perturbations, and thus establish that analogue gravity phenomena is rather more general than what was thought before. We consider spherically accreting astrophysical systems as a natural classical analogue gravity model, and develop a formalism to investigate non-linear perturbations of such accretion flows to arbitrary order. Our iterative approach involves a coupled set of equations for the mass accretion rate and the density of the fluid. In particular, we demonstrate that the wave equation for the mass accretion rate involves an acoustic metric which can be perturbatively constructed to all orders. We numerically solve the coupled equations about the leading transonic Bondi flow solution. This analysis uses boundary conditions set to the original unperturbed values, with the time dependence of the mass accretion rate perturbation taken to be exponentially damped. The perturbed solutions indicate that second order and higher perturbations of the metric generically cause the original acoustic horizon to oscillate and change in size. We explain this phenomenon in detail and its implications on non-linear perturbations of accretion flows in general.

For axially symmetric accretion maintained in hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction, we investigate how the characteristic features of the embedded acoustic geometry depends on the background Kerr metric, and how such dependence is governed by three different expressions of the thickness of the matter flow. We first obtain the location of the sonic points and stationary shock between the sonic points. We then linearly perturb the flow to obtain the corresponding metric elements of the acoustic space-time. We thus construct the causal structure to establish that the sonic points and the shocks are actually the analogue black hole type and white hole type horizons, respectively. We finally compute the value of the acoustic surface gravity as a function of the spin angular momentum of the rotating black hole for three different flow thicknesses considered in the present work. We find that for some flow models, the intrinsic acoustic geometry, although in principle may be extended up to the outer gravitational horizon of the astrophysical black hole, cannot be constructed beyond a certain truncation radius as imposed by the expressions of the thickness function of the corresponding flow.

General relativistic, axisymmetric flow of low angular momentum accretion around a Kerr black hole can have certain geometric configuration where the flow is maintained in hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction (direction orthogonal to the equatorial plane of the flow). The flow thickness for such accretion models becomes a function of the local radial distance measured from the black hole horizon. There are three types of functions defined in the literature which resemble the thickness of the flow for such a configuration. We formulate the equations governing the steady state astrophysical accretion characterized by both the polytropic as well as the isothermal equation of state in classical thermodynamics. We solve the equations within the framework of such geometric configuration for three different thickness functions, to obtain the multi-transonic, shocked, stationary integral accretion solutions. Such solutions enable us to study how flow thickness influences the dependence of the properties of post-shock flows on black hole spin angular momentum, i.e., the Kerr parameter. For temperature-preserving standings shocks, we find that the post-shock part of the disc can become luminous and considerable amount of gravitational energy carried by the accreting fluid can get liberated at the shock. We find which kind of thickness function produces the maximum liberated energy, making the disc most luminous.

By using Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT), we find that if the flow is not barotropic it will not be locally irrotational, and as a result, emergent gravity can not be realised for such flow. Our work gives a new perspective of examining the perturbations in a fluid from a different approach (other than Eulerian approach) which is the way of using Lagrangian Perturbation Theory. We make use of Lagrangian description of motion to examine the propagation of Eikonal wave (wave having very short wavelength) from the reference frame of the observer moving with the background flow. We find that waves of ultra short wavelength propagate similar to waves in a static uniform medium in the near vicinity of the observer. We restrict ourselves to nonrelativistic flows in astrophysical black hole accretion.

For axially symmetric accretion maintained in the hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction in the Kerr metric, the radial Mach number does not become unity at the critical point. The sonic points are, thus, formed at a radial distance different from that where the critical points are formed. We propose that a modified dynamical sound speed can be defined through the linear perturbation of the full space-time dependent equations describing the aforementioned accretion flow structure. The linear stability analysis of such fluid equations leads to the formation of an wave equation which describes the propagation of linear acoustic perturbation. The speed of propagation of such perturbation can be used as the effective sound speed which makes the value of the Mach number to be unity when evaluated at the critical points. This allows the critical points to coalesce with the sonic points. We study how the spin angular momentum of the black hole (the Kerr parameter) influences the value of the effective sound speed.

For low angular momentum axially symmetric accretion flow maintained in hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction, the value of the Mach number at the critical points deviates from unity, resulting in the non-isomorphism of the critical and the sonic points. This introduces several undesirable complexities while analytically dealing with the stationary integral accretion solutions and the corresponding phase portraits. We propose that introduction of an effective dynamical sound speed may resolve the issue in an elegant way. We linear perturb the full spacetime-dependent general relativistic Euler and the continuity equations governing the structure and the dynamics of accretion disc in vertical equilibrium around Schwarzschild black holes and identify the sonic metric embedded within the stationary background flow. Such metric describes the propagation of the linear acoustic perturbation inside the accretion flow. We construct the wave equation corresponding to that acoustic perturbation and find the speed of propagation of such perturbation. We finally show that the ordinary thermodynamic sound speed should be substituted by the speed of propagation of the linear acoustic wave which has been obtained through the dynamical perturbation. Such substitution will make the value of Mach number at the critical point to be equal to unity. Use of the aforementioned effective sound speed will lead to a modified stationary disc structure where the critical and the sonic points will be identical.

Linear perturbation of general relativistic accretion of low angular momentum hydrodynamic fluid onto a Kerr black hole leads to the formation of curved acoustic geometry embedded within the background flow. Characteristic features of such sonic geometry depend on the black hole spin. Such dependence can be probed by studying the correlation of the acoustic surface gravity $κ$ with the Kerr parameter $a$. The $κ- a$ relationship further gets influenced by the geometric configuration of the accretion flow structure. In this work, such influence has been studied for multitransonic shocked accretion where linear perturbation of general relativistic flow profile leads to the formation of two analogue black hole type horizons formed at the sonic points and one analogue white hole type horizon which is formed at the shock location producing divergent acoustic surface gravity. Dependence of the $κ- a$ relationship on the geometric configuration has also been studied for monotransonic accretion, over the entire span of the Kerr parameter including retrograde flow. For accreting astrophysical black holes, the present work thus investigates how the salient features of the embedded relativistic sonic geometry may be determined not only by the background space-time, but also by the flow configuration of the embedding matter.

For three different geometric configurations of matter and two different thermodynamic equations of state, low angular momentum, multi-transonic, axially symmetric accretion flow of matter having fractional dimension of mass distribution onto a rotating black hole has been studied by employing certain post-Newtonian pseudo-Kerr black hole potential. Such task has been accomplished mathematically by mapping the fractal nature of accreted medium onto its continuum counterpart. The difference between spin dependence of accretion dynamics of the fractal medium and the continuous medium has been highlighted. By employing a time dependent linear perturbation scheme, it has been demonstrated that accretion of matter with fractional dimension of density distribution can be considered as a natural example of classical analogue model. The corresponding acoustic surface gravity has been estimated in terms of accretion variables. The value of the surface gravity changes as the accreted matter makes a transition from its fractal nature to the corresponding continuum distribution.

For spherically symmetric accretion as well as for the axially symmetric matter flow for three different geometric configuration of matter, we perturb the velocity potential, the mass accretion rate, and the integral solution of the time independent part of the general relativistic Euler equation to obtain such acoustic geometry. We provide the procedure to locate the acoustic horizon and identify such horizon with the transonic surfaces of the accreting matter through the construction of the corresponding causal structures. We then discuss how one can compute the value of the acoustic surface gravity in terms of the accretion variable corresponding to the background flow solutions - i.e., stationary integral transonic accretion solutions for different matter geometries. We show that the salient features of the acoustic geometry is independent of the physical variable we perturb, but sensitively depends on the geometric configuration of the black hole accretion disc.

This work illustrates how the formation of energy-preserving shocks for polytropic accretion and temperature-preserving shocks for isothermal accretion are influenced by various geometrical configurations of general relativistic, axisymmetric, low-angular-momentum flow in the Kerr metric. Relevant pre- and post-shock states of the accreting fluid, both dynamical and thermodynamic, have been studied comprehensively. Self-gravitational back-reaction on the metric has not been considered in the present context. An elegant eigenvalue-based analytical method has been introduced to provide qualitative descriptions of the phase-orbits corresponding to stationary transonic accretion solutions, without resorting to involved numerical schemes. Effort has been made to understand how the weakly-rotating flow behaves in close proximity of the event horizon and how such `quasi-terminal' quantities are influenced by the black hole spin for different matter geometries. Our main purpose is thus to mathematically demonstrate that for non-self-gravitating accretion, separate matter geometries, in addition to the corresponding space-time geometry, control various shock-induced phenomena observed within black hole accretion discs. This work is expected to reveal how such phenomena observed near the horizon depend on physical environment of the source harbouring a supermassive black hole at its centre. It is also expected to unfold correspondences between the dependence of accretion-related parameters on flow geometries and on black hole spin. Temperature-preserving shocks in isothermal accretion may appear bright as substantial amount of rest-mass energy of the infalling matter gets dissipated at the shock surface, and the prompt removal of such energy to maintain isothermality may power the X-ray/IR flares emitted from our Galactic centre.

Analytical studies of black hole accretion usually presumes the stability of the stationary transonic configuration. Various authors in the past several decades demonstrated the validity of such an assumption for inviscid hydrodynamic flow. Inviscid approximation is a reasonable approach for low angular momentum advection dominated flow in connection to certain supermassive black holes at the centres of the galaxies (including our own) fed from a number of stellar donors. Introduction of a weak viscosity, as a first order linear correction involving the viscosity parameter, however, may sometimes provide a more detail understanding of the observed black hole spectra. The transonic behaviour of the stationary solutions have been studied for the aforementioned quasi-viscous accretion for all possible geometric configurations of axisymmetric flow. For a sufficiently low range of the viscosity parameter, transonic solutions containing one or three critical points have been found for allowed ranges in the astrophysical parameters under the post-Newtonian pseudo-Schwarzschild scheme. With the introduction of such viscosity parameter, the only feasible critical points are of saddle and spiral types in contrary to the inviscid case where centre type points were formed instead of spiral ones. Introduction of linear perturbations on stationary flow solutions and their time evolution in both standing and radially propagating wave forms have been examined (completely analytically) in detail. Our analysis shows that similar kind of secular instability exists in all the considered disk models at large distance in the asymptotic limit, however, the model itself is valid only within a certain length scale and the disks sustain within that length scale only for at least a considerable time scale.

We investigate the stability of stationary integral solutions of an ideal irrotational fluid in a general static and spherically symmetric background, by studying the profile of the perturbation of the mass accretion rate. We consider low angular momentum axisymmetric accretion flows for three different accretion disk models and consider time dependent and radial linear perturbation of the mass accretion rate. First we show that the propagation of such perturbation can be determined by an effective $2\times2$ matrix, which has qualitatively similar acoustic causal properties as one obtains via the perturbation of the velocity potential. Next, using this matrix we analytically address the stability issues, for both standing and travelling wave configurations generated by the perturbation. Finally, based on this general formalism we briefly discuss the explicit example of the Schwarzschild spacetime and compare our results of stability with the existing literature, which instead address this problem via the perturbation of the velocity potential.

In this work we present an alternative derivation of the general relativistic acoustic analogue geometry by perturbing the mass accretion rate or flux of an ideal fluid flowing radially in a general static and spherically symmetric spacetime. To the best of our knowledge, this has so far been done in non-relativistic scenario. The resulting causal structure of the two dimensional acoustic geometry is qualitatively similar to that one derives via the perturbation of the velocity potential. Using this, we then briefly discuss the stability issues by studying the wave configurations generated by the perturbation of the mass accretion rate, and formally demonstrate the stability of the accretion process. This is in qualitative agreement with earlier results on stability, established via study of wave configurations generated by the perturbation of velocity potential, by using the acoustic geometry associated with it. We further discuss explicit examples of the Schwarzschild and Rindler spacetimes.

Analytical treatment of black hole accretion generally presumes the stability of the stationary configuration. Various authors in the past several decades demonstrated the validity of such an assumption for inviscid hydrodynamic flow. Inviscid assumption is a reasonable approximation for low angular^M momentum advection dominated flow in connection to certain^M supermassive black holes at the^M centres of the galaxies (including our own) fed from a number of stellar donors.^M Introduction of a weak viscosity, however, may sometimes provide a more detail understanding of the observed spectrum. Recently it has been demonstrated that introduction of small amount of viscosity in the form of quasi-viscous flow makes a stationary accretion disc -- where the geometric configuration of matter is described by axisymmetric flow in hydrostatic equilibrium -- unstable. We perform similar analysis for other disc models (for all three possible geometric configurations of matter) for quasi-viscous models under the post-Newtonian scheme. We introduced perturbations on the stationary flow solution particularly in standing wave form and studied their time evolution to observe whether they grow with time. Our analysis shows that same sort of secular instability exists in other disc models too. We further argued that with sufficiently low value of viscosity in the realistic astrophysical perspective, the instability does not effectively jeopardize the stationary condition.

Gas clouds are present in the Galactic centre, where they orbit around the supermassive black hole. Collisions between these clumps reduce their angular momentum, and as a result some of the clumps are set on a plunging trajectory. Constraints can be imposed on the nature of past accretion events based on the currently observed X-ray reflection from the molecular clouds. We discuss accretion of clouds in the context of enhanced activity of Sgr A* during the past few hundred years. We put forward a scenario according to which gas clouds bring material close to the horizon of the black hole on <~0.1 parsec scale. We have modelled the source intrinsic luminosity assuming that multiple events occur at various moments in time. These events are characterized by the amount of accreted material and the distribution of angular momentum. We parameterized the activity in the form of a sequence of discrete events, followed the viscous evolution, and calculated the luminosity of the system from the time-dependent accretion rate across the inner boundary. Accreting clumps settle near a circularization radius, spread there during the viscous time, and subsequently feed the black hole over a certain period. A significant enhancement (by factor of ten) of the luminosity is only expected if the viscous timescale of the inflow is very short. On the other hand, the increase in source activity is expected to be much less prominent if the latter timescale is longer and a considerable fraction of the material does not reach the centre. A solution is obtained under two additional assumptions: (i) the radiative efficiency is a decreasing function of the Eddington ratio; (ii) the viscous decay of the luminosity proceeds somewhat faster than the canonical L(t)~t^{-5/3} profile. We applied our scheme to the case of G2 cloud in the Galactic centre to obtain constraints on the core-less gaseous cloud model.

In black hole evaporation process, the mass of the hole anti-correlates with the Hawking temperature. This indicates that the smaller holes have higher surface gravity. For analogue Hawking effects, however, the acoustic surface gravity is determined by the local values of the dynamical velocity of the stationary background fluid flow and the speed of propagation of the characteristic perturbation embedded in the background fluid, as well as by their space derivatives evaluated along the direction normal to the acoustic horizon, respectively. The mass of the analogue system - whether classical or quantum - does not directly contribute to extremise the value of the associated acoustic surface gravity. For general relativistic axially symmetric background fluid flow in the Schwarzschild metric, we show that the initial boundary conditions describing such accretion influence the maximization scheme of the acoustic surface gravity and associated analogue temperature. Aforementioned background flow onto black holes can assume three distinct geometric configurations. Identical set of initial boundary conditions can lead to entirely different phase-space behavior of the stationary flow solutions, as well as the salient features of the associated relativistic acoustic geometry. This implies that it is imperative to investigate how the measure of the acoustic surface gravity corresponding to the accreting black holes gets influenced by the geometric configuration of the inflow described by various thermodynamic equations of state. Such investigation is useful to study the effect of Einstenian gravity on the non-conventional classical features as observed in Hawking like effect in a dispersive medium in the limit of a strong dispersion relation.

The associated stationary critical solutions for such flow equations are provided and the stability of the stationary transonic configuration is examined using an elegant linear perturbation technique. We examine the properties of infalling material for both prograde and retrograde accretion as a function of the Kerr parameter at extremely close proximity to the event horizon. Our formalism can be used to identify a new spectral signature of black hole spin, and has the potential of performing the black hole shadow imaging corresponding to the low angular momentum accretion flow.

The question of the origin of the gas supplying the accretion process is pertinent especially in the context of enhanced activity of Galactic Center during the past few hundred years, seen now as echo from the surrounding molecular clouds, and the currently observed new cloud approaching Sgr A*. We discuss the so-called Galactic Center mini-spiral as a possible source of material feeding the supermassive black hole on a 0.1 parsec scale. The collisions between individual clumps reduce their angular momentum. and set some of the clumps on a plunging trajectory. We conclude that the amount of material contained in the mini-spiral is sufficient to sustain the luminosity of Sgr A* at the required level. The accretion episodes of relatively dense gas from the mini-spiral passing through a transient ring mode at $\sim 10^4$ Rg provide a viable scenario for the bright phase of Galactic Center.

This work makes the first ever attempt to understand the influence of the black hole background space-time in determining the fundamental properties of the embedded relativistic acoustic geometry. To accomplish such task, the role of the spin angular momentum of the astrophysical black hole (the Kerr parameter $a$ -- a representative feature of the background black hole metric) in estimating the value of the acoustic surface gravity (the representative feature of the corresponding analogue space time) has been investigated for axially symmetric inflow of hydrodynamic fluid onto a rotating black hole. Since almost all astrophysical black holes are supposed to posses some degree of intrinsic rotation, the influence of the Kerr parameter on classical analogue models is very important to understand.
For certain values of the initial boundary conditions describing the aforementioned flow, more than one acoustic horizons, namely two black hole type and one white hole type, may form, where the surface gravity may become formally infinite at the acoustic white hole. The connection between the corresponding analogue Hawking temperature with astrophysically relevant observables associated with the spectral signature has been discussed.

We apply the theory of algebraic polynomials to analytically study the transonic properties of general relativistic hydrodynamic axisymmetric accretion onto non-rotating astrophysical black holes. For such accretion phenomena, the conserved specific energy of the flow, which turns out to be one of the two first integrals of motion in the system studied, can be expressed as a 8$^{th}$ degree polynomial of the critical point of the flow configuration. We then construct the corresponding Sturm's chain algorithm to calculate the number of real roots lying within the astrophysically relevant domain of $\mathbb{R}$. This allows, for the first time in literature, to {\it analytically} find out the maximum number of physically acceptable solution an accretion flow with certain geometric configuration, space-time metric, and equation of state can have, and thus to investigate its multi-critical properties {\it completely analytically}, for accretion flow in which the location of the critical points can not be computed without taking recourse to the numerical scheme. This work can further be generalized to analytically calculate the maximal number of equilibrium points certain autonomous dynamical system can have in general. We also demonstrate how the transition from a mono-critical to multi-critical (or vice versa) flow configuration can be realized through the saddle-centre bifurcation phenomena using certain techniques of the catastrophe theory.

Blandford-Znajek (BZ) mechanism has usually been studied in the literature for accretion with considerably high angular momentum leading either to the formation of a cold Keplerian disc, or a hot and geometrically thick sub-Keplerian flow as described within the framework of ADAF/RIAF. However, in nearby elliptical galaxies, as well as for our own Galactic centre, accretion with very low angular momentum is prevalent. Such quasi-spherical strongly sub-Keplerian accretion has complex dynamical features and can accommodate stationary shocks. In this letter, we present our calculation for the maximum efficiency obtainable through the BZ mechanism for complete general relativistic weakly rotating axisymmetric flow in the Kerr metric. Both shocked and shock free flow has been studied in detail for rotating and counter rotating accretion. Such study has never been done in the literature before. We find that the energy extraction efficiency is low, about 0.1%, and increases by a factor 15 if the ram pressure is included. Such an efficiency is still much higher than the radiative efficiency of such optically thin flows. For BZ mechanism, shocked flow produces higher efficiency than the shock free solutions and retrograde flow provides a slightly larger value of the efficiency than that for the prograde flow.

Using mathematical formalism borrowed from dynamical systems theory, a complete analytical investigation of the critical behaviour of the stationary flow configuration for the low angular momentum axisymmetric black hole accretion provides valuable insights about the nature of the phase trajectories corresponding to the transonic accretion in the steady state, without taking recourse to the explicit numerical solution commonly performed in the literature to study the multi-transonic black hole accretion disc and related astrophysical phenomena. Investigation of the accretion flow around a non rotating black hole under the influence of various pseudo-Schwarzschild potentials and forming different geometric configurations of the flow structure manifests that the general profile of the parameter space divisions describing the multi-critical accretion is roughly equivalent for various flow geometries. However, a mere variation of the polytropic index of the flow cannot map a critical solution from one flow geometry to the another, since the numerical domain of the parameter space responsible to produce multi-critical accretion does not undergo a continuous transformation in multi-dimensional parameter space. The stationary configuration used to demonstrate the aforementioned findings is shown to be stable under linear perturbation for all kind of flow geometries, black hole potentials, and the corresponding equations of state used to obtain the critical transonic solutions. Finally, the structure of the acoustic metric corresponding to the propagation of the linear perturbation studied are discussed for various flow geometries used.

Observation of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy RE J1034+396 is believed to demonstrate a drift of the central period of the Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) linearly correlated with the temporary X-ray luminosity. We show, using a specific scenario of the oscillation mechanism in black hole accretion disc, that modeling such correlated trends puts very strong constraints on the nature of this oscillation and the characteristic features of the hot flow in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In our model, QPO oscillations are due to the oscillations of the shock formed in the low angular momentum hot accretion flow, and the variation of the shock location corresponds to the observed changes in the QPO period and the X-ray flux. In this scenario, change in the shock location caused by perturbation of the flow angular momentum is compatible with the trends observed in RE J1034+396, whereas the perturbation of the specific flow energy results in too strong flux response to the change of the oscillation period. Using a complete general relativistic framework to study the accretion flow in the Kerr metric, we discuss the role of the black hole spin in the period drift. Future missions are expected to bring more active galaxies with time-resolved quasi-periodic oscillations so similar quantitative study for other QPO scenarios will be necessary.

The secular evolution of the purely general relativistic low angular momentum accretion flow around a spinning black hole is shown to exhibit hysteresis effects. This confirms that a stationary shock is an integral part of such an accretion disc in the Kerr metric. The equations describing the space gradient of the dynamical flow velocity of the accreting matter have been shown to be equivalent to a first order autonomous dynamical systems. Fixed point analysis ensures that such flow must be multi-transonic for certain astrophysically relevant initial boundary conditions. Contrary to the existing consensus in the literature, the critical points and the sonic points are proved not to be isomorphic in general. Homoclinic orbits for the flow flow possessing multiple critical points select the critical point with the higher entropy accretion rate, confirming that the entropy accretion rate is the degeneracy removing agent in the system. However, heteroclinic orbits are also observed for some special situation, where both the saddle type critical points of the flow configuration possesses identical entropy accretion rate. Topologies with heteroclinic orbits are thus the only allowed non removable degenerate solutions for accretion flow with multiple critical points, and are shown to be structurally unstable. Depending on suitable initial boundary conditions, a homoclinic trajectory can be combined with a standard non homoclinic orbit through an energy preserving Rankine-Hugoniot type of stationary shock. An effective Lyapunov index has been proposed to analytically confirm why certain class of transonic flow can not accommodate shock solutions even if it produces multiple critical points. (Abridged)

In a novel approach to studying viscous accretion flows, viscosity has been introduced as a perturbative effect, involving a first-order correction in the $α$-viscosity parameter. This method reduces the problem of solving a second-order nonlinear differential equation (Navier-Stokes equation) to that of an effective first-order equation. Viscosity breaks down the invariance of the equilibrium conditions for stationary inflow and outflow solutions, and distinguishes accretion from wind. Under a dynamical systems classification, the only feasible critical points of this "quasi-viscous" flow are saddle points and spirals. A linearised and radially propagating time-dependent perturbation gives rise to secular instability on large spatial scales of the disc. Further, on these same length scales, the velocity evolution equation of the quasi-viscous flow has been transformed to bear a formal closeness with Schrödinger's equation with a repulsive potential. Compatible with the transport of angular momentum to the outer regions of the disc, a viscosity-limited length scale has been defined for the full spatial extent over which the accretion process would be viable.

In recent years, strong analogies have been established between the physics of acoustic perturbations in an inhomogeneous dynamical fluid system, and some kinematic features of space-time in general relativity. An effective metric, referred to as the `acoustic metric', which describes the geometry of the manifold in which acoustic perturbations propagate, can be constructed. This effective geometry can capture the properties of curved space-time in general relativity. Physical models constructed utilizing such analogies are called `analogue gravity models'. Classical analogue gravity effect may be observed when acoustic perturbations propagate through a inhomogeneous transonic classical fluid. The acoustic horizon, which resembles a black hole event horizon in many ways, is generated at the transonic point in the fluid flow. The acoustic horizon is essentially a null hyper surface, generators of which are the acoustic null geodesics, i.e. the phonons. The acoustic horizon emits acoustic radiation with quasi thermal phonon spectra, which is analogous to the actual Hawking radiation. The temperature of the radiation emitted from the acoustic horizon is referred to as the analogue Hawking temperature.
It has been demonstrated that, in general, the transonic accretion in astrophysics can be considered as an example of the classical analogue gravity model naturally found in the Universe.

In a stationary, general relativistic, axisymmetric, inviscid and rotational accretion flow, described within the Kerr geometric framework, transonicity has been examined by setting up the governing equations of the flow as a first-order autonomous dynamical system. The consequent linearised analysis of the critical points of the flow leads to a comprehensive mathematical prescription for classifying these points, showing that the only possibilities are saddle points and centre-type points for all ranges of values of the fixed flow parameters. The spin parameter of the black hole influences the multitransonic character of the flow, as well as some of its specific critical properties. The special case of a flow in the space-time of a non-rotating black hole, characterised by the Schwarzschild metric, has also been studied for comparison and the conclusions are compatible with what has been seen for the Kerr geometric case.

The stationary spherically symmetric accretion flow in the Schwarzschild metric has been set up as an autonomous first-order dynamical system, and it has been studied completely analytically. Of the three possible critical points in the flow, the one that is physically realistic behaves like the saddle point of the standard Bondi accretion problem. One of the two remaining critical points exhibits the strange mathematical behaviour of being either a saddle point or a centre-type point, depending on the values of the flow parameters. The third critical point is always unphysical and behaves like a centre-type point. The treatment has been extended to pseudo-Schwarzschild flows for comparison with the general relativistic analysis.

For inviscid, rotational accretion flows, both isothermal and polytropic, a simple dynamical systems analysis of the critical points has given a very accurate mathematical scheme to understand the nature of these points, for {\em any} pseudo-potential by which the flow may be driven on to a Schwarzschild black hole. This allows for a complete classification of the critical points for a wide range of flow parameters, and shows that the only possible critical points for this kind of flow are saddle points and centre-type points. A restrictive upper bound on the angular momentum of critical solutions has been established. A time-dependent perturbative study reveals that the form of the perturbation equation, for both isothermal and polytropic flows, is invariant under the choice of any particular pseudo-potential. Under generically true outer boundary conditions, the inviscid flow has been shown to be stable under an adiabatic and radially propagating perturbtion. The perturbation equation has also served the dual purpose of enabling an understanding of the acoustic geometry for inviscid and rotational flows.

The material accreting onto Sgr A* most probably comes from the nearby stars. We analyze the pattern of this flow at distances of a fraction of a parsec and we argue that the net angular momentum of this material is low but non-negligible, and the initially supersonic disk accretion changes into subsonic flow with constant angular momentum. Next we estimate the flow parameters at a distance $R_{BHL}$ from the black hole and we argue that for the plausible parameter range the accretion flow is non-stationary. The inflow becomes supersonic at distance of $\sim 10^4 R_g$ but the solution does not continue below the horizon and the material piles up forming a torus, or a ring, at a distance of a few up to tens of Schwarzchild radii. Such a torus is known to be unstable and may explain strong variability of the flow in Sgr A*. Our considerations show that the temporary formation of such a torus seems to be unavoidable.
Our best fitting model predicts a rather large accretion rate of around $4 \cdot 10^{-6} M_{\odot}/yr$ directly on Sgr A*. We argue that magnetic fields in the flow are tangled and this allows our model to overcome the disagreement with the Faraday rotation limits.

We formulate and solve the equations governing the transonic behaviour of a general relativistic black-hole accretion disc with non-zero advection velocity. We demonstrate that a relativistic Rankine-Hugoniot shock may form leading to the formation of accretion powered outflow. We show that the critical points of transonic discs generally do not coincide with the corresponding sonic points. The collection of such sonic points forms an axisymmetric hypersurface, generators of which are the acoustic null geodesics, i.e. the phonon trajectories. Such a surface is shown to be identical with an acoustic event horizon. The acoustic surface gravity and the corresponding analogue horizon temperature $T_{AH}$ at the acoustic horizon are then computed in terms of fundamental accretion parameters. Physically, the analogue temperature is associated with the thermal phonon radiation analogous to the Hawking radiation of the black-hole horizon. Thus, an axisymmetric black-hole accretion disc is established as a natural example of the classical analogue gravity model, for which two kinds of horizon exist simultaneously. We have shown that for some values of astrophysically relevant accretion parameters, the analogue temperature exceeds the corresponding Hawking temperature. We point out that acoustic {\it white holes} can also be generated for a multi-transonic black-hole accretion with a shock. Such a white hole, produced at the shock, is always flanked by two acoustic black holes generated at the inner and the outer sonic points. Finally, we discuss possible applications of our work to other astrophysical events which may exhibit analogue effects.

In the framework of acoustic geometry we study axially symmetric accretion and wind of a rotating astrophysical black hole or of a neutron star assuming isentropic flow of a fluid described by a polytropic equation of state. In particular we analyze the causal structure of multitransonic configurations with two sonic points and a shock. Retarded and advanced null curves clearly demonstrate the presence of the acoustic black hole at regular sonic points and of the white hole at the shock. We calculate the analogue surface gravity and the Hawking temperature for the inner and the outer acoustic horizons.

We demonstrate that a spherical accretion onto astrophysical black holes, under the influence of Newtonian or various post-Newtonian pseudo-Schwarzschild gravitational potentials, may constitute a concrete example of classical analogue gravity naturally found in the Universe. We analytically calculate the corresponding analogue Hawking temperature as a function of the minimum number of physical parameters governing the accretion flow. We study both the polytropic and the isothermal accretion. We show that unlike in a general relativistic spherical accretion, analogue white hole solutions can never be obtained in such post-Newtonian systems. We also show that an isothermal spherical accretion is a remarkably simple example in which the only one information--the temperature of the fluid, is sufficient to completely describe an analogue gravity system. For both types of accretion, the analogue Hawking temperature may become higher than the usual Hawking temperature. However, the analogue Hawking temperature for accreting astrophysical black holes is considerably lower compared with the temperature of the accreting fluid.

Classical black hole analogues (alternatively, the analogue systems) are fluid dynamical analogue of general relativistic black holes. Such analogue effects may be observed when acoustic perturbations (sound waves) propagate through a classical dissipation-less tran-sonic fluid. The acoustic horizon, which resembles the actual black hole event horizon in many ways, may be generated at the transonic point in the fluid flow. Acoustic horizon emits quasi thermal phonon spectra, which is analogous to the actual Hawking radiation, and possesses the temperature referred as the analogue Hawking temperature, or simply, the analogue temperature.
Transonic accretion onto astrophysical black holes is a very interesting example of classical analogue system found naturally in the Universe. An accreting black holes system as a classical analogue is unique in the sense that only for such a system, both kind of horizons, the electromagnetic and the acoustic (generated due to transonicity of accreting fluid) are simultaneously present in the same system. Hence an accreting astrophysical black hole is the ideal-most candidate to theoretically study and to compare the properties of these two different kind of horizons. Also such system is unique in the aspect that general relativistic spherical accretion onto the Schwarzschild black hole represents the only classical analogue system found in the nature so far, where the analogue Hawking temperature may be higher than the actual Hawking temperature.
