We present here the recent results on two distant Galactic H II regions, namely NGC~2282 and Sh2-149, obtained with multiwavelength observations. Our optical spectroscopic analysis of the bright sources have been used to identify the massive members, and to derive the fundamental parameters such as age and distance of these regions. Using IR colour-colour criteria and H$_α$-emission properties, we have identified and classified the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in these regions. The $^{12}$CO(1-0) continuum maps along with the {\it K}-band extinction maps, and spatial distribution of YSOs are used to investigate the structure and morphology of the molecular cloud associated with these H II regions. Overall analysis of these regions suggests that the star formation occurs at the locations of the denser gas, and we also find possible evidence of the induced star formation due to the feedback from massive stars to its surrounding molecular medium.

The optical spectra and photometry of the nova have been taken from SMARTS and Asiago; the near-infrared photometry was obtained from SMARTS and Mt. Abu. The spectra are dominated by strong H I lines from the Balmer series, Fe II, N I and [O I] lines in the initial days, typical of an Fe II type nova. The measured FWHM for the H-beta and H-alpha lines was 800-1200 km/s. There was pronounced dust formation starting 90 days after the outburst. The J - K color was the largest among recent dust forming novae.

We present the analysis of the stellar content of NGC~2282, a young cluster in the Monoceros constellation, using deep optical $BVI$ and IPHAS photometry along with infrared (IR) data from UKIDSS and $Spitzer$-IRAC. Based on the stellar surface density analysis using nearest neighborhood method, the radius of the cluster is estimated as $\sim$ 3.15$\arcmin$. From optical spectroscopic analysis of 8 bright sources, we have classified three early B-type members in the cluster, which includes, HD 289120, a previously known B2V type star, a Herbig Ae/Be star (B0.5 Ve) and a B5 V star. From spectrophotometric analyses, the distance to the cluster has been estimated as $\sim$ 1.65 kpc. The $K$-band extinction map is estimated using nearest neighborhood technique, and the mean extinction within the cluster area is found to be A$_V$ $\sim$ 3.9 mag. Using IR colour-colour criteria and H$_α$-emission properties, we have identified a total of 152 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in the region, of which, 75 are classified as Class II, 9 are Class I YSOs. Our YSO catalog also includes 50 H$_α$-emission line sources, identified using slitless spectroscopy and IPHAS photometry data. Based on the optical and near-IR colour-magnitude diagram analyses, the cluster age has been estimated to be in the range of 2 $-$ 5 Myr, which is in agreement with the estimated age from disc fraction ($\sim$ 58\%). Masses of these YSOs are found to be $\sim$ 0.1$-$2.0 M$_\odot$. Spatial distribution of the candidate YSOs shows spherical morphology, more or less similar to the surface density map.

We present results of near-infrared (near-IR) $JHK$ (1.07 - 2.5 $μ$m) spectroscopic and photometric observations of Nova V476 Scuti (V476 Sct) which was discovered in outburst in 2005 September. The near-IR observations of the nova presents the evolution of the post-maxima spectra and near-IR light curve. The spectra of V476 Sct, observed on 9 different epochs, show prominent lines due to HI, OI, CI and NI. Based on the IR spectral signatures we independently identify it as a Fe II type of nova, consistent with the same classification obtained from optical spectra. A detailed identification of the observed spectral lines is presented. The near-IR $JHK$ light curve extending for a period of about 59 days after outburst clearly shows the formation of a optically thin dust shell, a phenomenon which is not commonly observed in novae. By fitting black body curves to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) the temperatures of the dust shell on different epochs have been estimated. Dust formation in V476 Sct is consistent with the presence of lines of elements with low-ionization potential like Na and Mg in the early spectra which had earlier been suggested by us to be potential indicators of dust formation at a later phase in a nova's development.

We present near-IR observations of the 2010 outburst of U Sco. JHK photometry is presented on ten consecutive days starting from 0.59 days after outburst. Such photometry can gainfully be integrated into a larger database of other multi-wavelength data which aim to comprehensively study the evolution of U Sco. Early near-IR spectra, starting from 0.56 days after outburst, are presented and their general characteristics discussed. Early in the eruption, we see very broad wings in several spectral lines, with tails extending up to ~10000km/s along the line of sight; it is unexpected to have a nova with ejection velocities equal to those usually thought to be exclusive to supernovae. From recombination analysis, we estimate an upper limit of 10^-4.64[+0.92.-0.74]Msun for the ejected mass.

We present results obtained from extensive near-infrared spectroscopic and photometric observations of nova V574 Pup during its 2004 outburst. The observations were obtained over four months, starting from 2004 November 25 (four days after the nova outburst) to 2005 March 20. The near-IR JHK light curve is presented - no evidence is seen from it for dust formation to have occurred during our observations. In the early decline phase, the JHK spectra of the nova are dominated by emission lines of hydrogen Brackett and Paschen series, OI, CI and HeI. We also detect the fairly uncommon Fe II line at 1.6872 micron in the early part of our observations. The strengths of the HeI lines at 1.0830 micron and 2.0585 micron are found to become very strong towards the end of the observations indicating a progression towards higher excitation conditions in the nova ejecta. The width of the emission lines do not show any significant change during the course of our observations. The slope of the continuum spectrum was found to have a lambda^{-2.75} dependence in the early stages which gradually becomes flatter with time and changes to a free-free spectral dependence towards the later stages. Recombination analysis of the HI lines shows deviations from Case B conditions during the initial stages. However, towards the end of our observations, the line strengths are well simulated with case B model values with electron density n_e = 10^{9-10} cm^{-3} and a temperature equal to 10^4 K. Based on our distance estimate to the nova of 5.5 kpc and the observed free-free continuum emission in the later part of the observations, we estimate the ionized mass of the ejecta to be between 10^{-5} and 10^{-6} solar-mass.

We present the first high spatial resolution monitoring of the dust forming nova V1280 Sco performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Spectra and visibilities were obtained from the onset of the dust formation 23 days after discovery till day 145, using the instruments AMBER and MIDI. These interferometric observations are complemented by near-infrared data from the 1.2m Mt. Abu Infrared Observatory, India. The observations are first interpreted with simple models but more complex models, involving a second shell, are necessary to explain the data obtained from t=110d after outburst. This behavior is in accordance with the light curve of V1280 Sco which exhibits a secondary peak around t=106d, followed by a new steep decline, suggesting a new dust forming event. Spherical dust shell models generated with the DUSTY code are also used to investigate the parameters of the main dust shell. Using uniform disk and Gaussian models, these observations allow us to determine an apparent linear expansion rate for the dust shell of 0.35 +/- 0.03 mas/day and the approximate time of ejection of the matter in which dust formed as t_ejec=10.5+/-7d, i.e. close to the maximum brightness. This information, combined with the expansion velocity of 500+/-100km/s, implies a distance estimate of 1.6+/-0.4kpc. The dust mass generated was typically 2-8 10^-9 solar mass per day. Considering that the dust forming event lasted at least 200-250d, the mass of the ejected material is likely to have exceeded 10^-4 solar mass.
