We consider higher-dimensional massive Brans-Dicke theory with Ricci-flat internal space. The background model is perturbed by a massive gravitating source which is pressureless in the external (our space) but has an arbitrary equation-of-state parameter $Ω$ in the internal space. We obtain the exact solution of the system of linearized equations for the perturbations of the metric coefficients and scalar field. For a massless scalar field, relying on the fine-tuning between the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ and $Ω$, we demonstrate that (i) the model does not contradict gravitational tests relevant to the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $γ$, and (ii) the scalar field is not ghost in the case of nonzero $|Ω|\sim O(1)$ along with the natural value $|ω|\sim O(1)$. In the general case of a massive scalar field, the metric coefficients acquire the Yukawa correction terms, where the Yukawa mass scale $m$ is defined by the mass of the scalar field. For the natural value $ω\sim O(1)$, the inverse-square-law experiments impose the following restriction on the lower bound of the mass: $m\gtrsim 10^{-11}\,$GeV. The experimental constraints on $γ$ requires that $Ω$ must be extremely close to $-1/2$.

We consider Kaluza-Klein models where internal spaces are compact flat or curved Einstein spaces. This background is perturbed by a compact gravitating body with the dust-like equation of state (EoS) in the external/our space and an arbitrary EoS parameter $Ω$ in the internal space. Without imposing any restrictions on the form of the perturbed metric and the distribution of the perturbed energy densities, we perform the general analysis of the Einstein and conservation equations in the weak-field limit. All conclusions follow from this analysis. For example, we demonstrate that the perturbed model is static and perturbed metric preserves the block-diagonal form. In a particular case $Ω=-1/2$, the found solution corresponds to the weak-field limit of the black strings/branes. The black strings/branes are compact gravitating objects which have the topology (four-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime)$\times$ ($d$-dimensional internal space) with $d\geq 1$. We present the arguments in favour of these objects. First, they satisfy the gravitational tests for the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ at the same level of accuracy as General Relativity. Second, they are preferable from the thermodynamical point of view. Third, averaging over the Universe, they do not destroy the stabilization of the internal space. These are the astrophysical and cosmological aspects of the black strings/branes.

We consider 5D brane world models with broken global 4D Poincar\a'{e} invariance (4D part of the spacetime metric is not conformal to the Minkowski spacetime). The bulk is filled with the negative cosmological constant and may contain a perfect fluid. In the case of empty bulk (the perfect fluid is absent), it is shown that one brane solution always has either a physical or a coordinate singularity in the bulk. We cut off these singularities in the case of compact two brane model and obtain regular exact solutions for both 4D Poincar\a'{e} broken and restored invariance. When the perfect fluid is present in the bulk, we get the master equation for the metric coefficients in the case of arbitrary bulk perfect fluid equation of state (EoS) parameters. In two particular cases of EoS, we obtain the analytic solutions for thin and thick branes. First one generalizes the well known Randall-Sundrum model with one brane to the case of the bulk anisotropic perfect fluid. In the second solution, the 4D Poincar\a'{e} invariance is restored. Here, the spacetime goes asymptotically to the anti-de Sitter one far from the thick brane.

We perturb this background by a compact matter source (e.g., the system of gravitating masses) with the zero pressure in the external/our space and an arbitrary pressure in the internal space. We show that the Einstein equations are compatible only if the matter source is smeared over the internal space and perturbed metric components do not depend on coordinates of extra dimensions. The latter means the absence of KK modes corresponding to the metric fluctuations. Maybe, the absence of KK particles in LHC experiments is explained by such mechanism.

We construct the Lagrange function of this many-body system for any value of Σ=\sum_{\barα} ω_{(\barα-3)}. Moreover, the gravitational tests (PPN parameters, perihelion and periastron advances) require negligible deviation from the latent soliton value Σ=-(D-3)/2. However, the presence of pressure/tension in the internal space results necessarily in the smearing of the gravitating masses over the internal space and in the absence of the KK modes. This looks very unnatural from the point of view of quantum physics.

In the six-dimensional Kaluza-Klein model with the multidimensional cosmological constant $Λ_6$, we obtain the black brane with spherical compactification of the internal space. The matter source for this exact solution consists of two parts. First, it is a fine-tuned homogeneous perfect fluid which provides spherical compactification of the internal space. Second, it is a gravitating massive body with the dustlike equation of state in the external space and tension $\hat p_1=-(1/2)\hat\varepsilon$ in the internal space. This solution exists both in the presence and absence of $Λ_6$. In the weak-field approximation, we also get solutions of the linearized Einstein equations for the model with spherical compactification. Here, the gravitating matter source has the dustlike equation of state in the external space and an arbitrary equation of state $\hat p_1=Ω\hat\varepsilon$ in the internal space. In the case $Λ_6>0$ and $Ω\neq -1/2$, these approximate solutions tend asymptotically to the weak-field limit of the exact black brane solution. Both the exact and asymptotic black branes satisfy the gravitational experiments at the same level of accuracy as general relativity.

We investigate the classical gravitational tests for the six-dimensional Kaluza-Klein model with spherical (of a radius $a$) compactification of the internal space. The model contains also a bare multidimensional cosmological constant $Λ_6$. The matter, which corresponds to this ansatz, can be simulated by a perfect fluid with the vacuum equation of state in the external space and an arbitrary equation of state with the parameter $ω_1$ in the internal space. For example, $ω_1=1$ and $ω_1=2$ correspond to the monopole two-forms and the Casimir effect, respectively. In the particular case $Λ_6=0$, the parameter $ω_1$ is also absent: $ω_1=0$. In the weak-field approximation, we perturb the background ansatz by a point-like mass. We demonstrate that in the case $ω_1>0$ the perturbed metric coefficients have the Yukawa type corrections with respect to the usual Newtonian gravitational potential. The inverse square law experiments restrict the parameters of the model: $a/\sqrt{ω_1}\lesssim 6\times10^{-3}\ {cm}$. Therefore, in the Solar system the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $γ$ is equal to 1 with very high accuracy. Thus, our model satisfies the gravitational experiments (the deflection of light and the time delay of radar echoes) at the same level of accuracy as General Relativity. We demonstrate also that our background matter provides the stable compactification of the internal space in the case $ω_1>0$. However, if $ω_1=0$, then the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $γ=1/3$, which strongly contradicts the observations.
