We investigate the stellar atmospheres of the two components of the Herbig Ae SB2 system AK Sco to determine the elements present in the stars and their abundance. Equal stellar parameters T_eff = 6500K and log g = 4.5 were used for both stars. We studied HARPSpol spectra (resolution 110,000) that were previously used to state the presence of a weak magnetic field in the secondary. A composite synthetic spectrum was compared in the whole observed region lambda 3900-6912A with the observed spectrum. The abundances were derived mostly from unblended profiles, in spite of their sparsity, owing to the complexity of the system and to the not negligible v sin i of 18km/s and 21km/s adopted for the two components, respectively. The identified elements are those typical of stars with spectral type F5IV-V, except for Li I at 6707A and He I at 5875.61A, whose presence is related with the Herbig nature of the two stars. Furthermore, overabundances were determined in both stars for Y, Ba, and La. Zirconium is overabundant only in the primary, while sulfur is overabundant outside the adopted error limits only in the secondary. In contrast to previous results showing a high occurrence rate of lambda Boo peculiarities or normal chemical composition among the Herbig Ae/Be stars, the abundance pattern of AK Sco is similar to that of only few other Herbig stars displaying weak Ap/Bp peculiarities. A few accretion diagnostic lines are discussed.

We report on magnetic field measurements of 157 chemically peculiar A/B stars (Ap/Bp) based on resolved, magnetically split absorption lines present in $H$-band spectra provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. These stars represent the extreme magnetic end of a still-growing sample of >900 Ap/Bp stars selected among the APOGEE telluric standard stars as those with Ce III absorption lines and/or literature Ap/Bp classifications. The lines most frequently resolved into their split components for these stars in the $H$-band pertain primarily pertain to Ce III, Cr II, Fe I, Mn II, Si I, and Ca II, in addition to one or more unidentified ions. Using mean magnetic field modulus (<B>) estimates for transitions with known Landé factors, we estimate effective Landé factors for 5 Ce III lines and 15 unknown lines and proceed to measure <B> of 157 stars, only 3 of which have previous literature estimates of <B>. This 183% increase in the number of Ap/Bp stars for which <B> has been measured is a result of the large number of stars observed by SDSS/APOGEE, extension of high-resolution Ap/Bp star observations to fainter magnitudes, and the advantages of long wavelengths for resolving magnetically split lines. With <B>=25 kG, the star 2MASS J02563098+4534239 is currently the most magnetic star of the SDSS/APOGEE sample. Effective Landé factors, representative line profiles, and magnetic field moduli are presented. The validity of the results is supported using optical, high-resolution, follow-up spectra for 29 of the stars.

We report the detection of weak mean longitudinal magnetic fields in the Herbig Ae double-lined spectroscopic binary AK Sco and in the presumed spectroscopic Herbig Ae binary HD95881 using observations with the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher polarimeter (HARPSpol) attached to the European Southern Observatory's (ESO's) 3.6m telescope. Employing a multi-line singular value decomposition (SVD) method, we detect a mean longitudinal magnetic field <B_z>=-83+-31G in the secondary component of AK Sco on one occasion. For HD95881, we measure <B_z>=-93+-25G and <B_z>=105+-29G at two different observing epochs. For all the detections the false alarm probability is smaller than 10^-5. For AK Sco system, we discover that accretion diagnostic Na I doublet lines and photospheric lines show intensity variations over the observing nights. The double-lined spectral appearance of HD95881 is presented here for the first time.

The atmospheres of cool stars are temporally and spatially inhomogeneous due to the effects of convection. The influence of this inhomogeneity, referred to as granulation, on colours has never been investigated over a large range of effective temperatures and gravities. We aim to study, in a quantitative way, the impact of granulation on colours. We use the CIFIST grid of CO5BOLD hydrodynamical models to compute emerging fluxes. These in turn are used to compute theoretical colours in the UBVRI,2MASS,Hipparcos,Gaia and SDSS systems. Every CO5BOLD model has a corresponding one dimensional (1D) plane-parallel LHD model computed for the same atmospheric parameters, which we used to define a "3D correction" that can be applied to colours computed from fluxes computed from any 1D model atmosphere code. The 3D corrections on colours are generally small, of the order of a few hundredths of a magnitude, yet they are far from negligible. We find that ignoring granulation effects can lead to underestimation of Teff by up to 200K and overestimation of gravity by up to 0.5dex, when using colours as diagnostics. We have identified a major shortcoming in how scattering is treated in the current version of the CIFIST grid, which could lead to offsets of the order 0.01mag, especially for colours involving blue and UV bands. We have investigated the Gaia and Hipparcos photometric systems and found that the (G-H_p),(BP-RP) diagram is immune to the effects of granulation. In addition, we point to the potential of the RVS photometry as a metallicity diagnostic. Our investigation shows that the effects of granulation should not be neglected if one wants to use colours as diagnostics of the stellar parameters of F,G,K stars. A limitation is that scattering is treated as true absorption in our current computations, thus our 3D corrections are likely an upper limit to the true effect. (Abridged)

HD66051 is an eclipsing system with an orbital period of about 4.75 d that exhibits out-of-eclipse variability with the same period. New multicolour photometric observations confirm the longevity of the secondary variations, which we interpret as a signature of surface inhomogeneities on one of the components. Using archival and newly acquired high-resolution spectra, we have performed a detailed abundance analysis. The primary component is a slowly rotating late B-type star ($T_{\rm eff} = 12500\pm200$ K; $\log g = 4.0$, $v\sin i = 27\pm2$ km s$^{-1}$) with a highly peculiar composition reminiscent of the singular HgMn-related star HD 65949, which seems to be its closest analogue. Some light elements as He, C, Mg, Al are depleted, while Si and P are enhanced. Except for Ni, all the iron-group elements, as well as most of the heavy elements, and in particular the REE elements, are overabundant. The secondary component was estimated to be a slowly rotating A-type star ($T_{\rm eff} \sim 8000$ K; $\log g = 4.0$, $v\sin i \sim 18$ km s$^{-1}$). The unique configuration of HD\,66051 opens up intriguing possibilities for future research, which might eventually and significantly contribute to the understanding of such diverse phenomena as atmospheric structure, mass transfer, magnetic fields, photometric variability and the origin of chemical anomalies observed in HgMn stars and related objects.

The sharp-line spectrum of the Bp star HR 6000 has peculiarities that distinguish it from those of the HgMn stars with which it is sometimes associated. The position of the star close to the center of the Lupus 3 molecular cloud, whose estimated age is on the order of 9.1 +/- 2.1 Myr, has lead to the hypothesis that the anomalous peculiarities of HR 6000 can be explained by the young age of the star. Observational material from HST provides the opportunity to extend the abundance analysis previously performed for the optical region and clarify the properties of this remarkable peculiar star. Our aim was to obtain the atmospheric abundances for all the elements observed in a broad region from 1250 to 10000 A. An LTE synthetic spectrum was compared with a high-resolution spectrum observed with STIS equipment in the 1250-3040 A interval. The adopted model is an ATLAS12 model already used for the abundance analysis of a high-resolution optical spectrum observed at ESO with UVES. The stellar parameters are Teff=13450K, logg=4.3, and zero microturbulent velocity. Abundances for 28 elements and 7 upper limits were derived from the ultraviolet spectrum. Adding results from previous work, we have now quantitative results for 37 elements, some of which show striking contrasts with those of a broad sample of HgMn stars. The analysis has pointed out ionization anomalies and line-to-line variation in the derived abundances, in particular for silicon. The inferred discrepancies could be explained by non-LTE effects and with the occurrence of diffusion and vertical abundance stratification. In the framework of the last hypothesis, we obtained, by means of trial and error, empirical step functions of abundance versus optical depth log(tau_5000) for carbon, silicon, manganese, and gold, while we failed to find such a function for phosphorous.

We determine abundances or upper limits for all of the 55 stable elements from copper to uranium for the A1 Vm star Sirius. The purpose of the study is to assemble the most complete picture of elemental abundances with the hope of revealing the chemical history of the brightest star in the sky, apart from the Sun. We also explore the relationship of this hot metallic-line (Am) star to its cooler congeners, as well as the hotter, weakly- or non-magnetic mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars. Our primary observational material consists of {\em Hubble Space Telescope} ($HST$) spectra taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in the ASTRAL project. We have also used archival material from the %\citep/{ayr10}. $COPERNICUS$ satellite, and from the $HST$ Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS), as well as ground-based spectra from Furenlid, Westin, Kurucz, Wahlgren, and their coworkers, ESO spectra from the UVESPOP project, and NARVAL spectra retrieved from PolarBase. Our analysis has been primarily by spectral synthesis, and in this work we have had the great advantage of extensive atomic data unavailable to earlier workers. We find most abundances as well as upper limits range from 10 to 100 times above solar values. We see no indication of the huge abundance excesses of 1000 or more that occur among many chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper main sequence. The picture of Sirius as a hot Am star is reinforced.

The NIST database lists several Mn II lines that were observed in the laboratory but not classified. They cannot be used in spectrum synthesis because their atomic line data are unknown. These lines are concentrated in the 2380-2700 A interval. We aimed to assign energy levels and log gf values to these lines. Semi-empirical line data for Mn II computed by Kurucz were used to synthesize the ultraviolet spectrum of the slow-rotating, HgMn star HD 175640. The spectrum was compared with the high-resolution spectrum observed with the HST-STIS equipment. A UVES spectrum covering the 3050-10000 A region was also examined. We determined a total of 73 new energy levels, 58 from the STIS spectrum of HD 175640 and another 15 from the UVES spectrum. The new energy levels give rise to numerous new computed lines. We have identified more than 50% of the unclassified lines listed in the NIST database and have changed the assignement of another 24 lines. An abundance analysis of the star HD 175640, based on the comparison of observed and computed ultraviolet spectra in the 1250-3040 A interval, is the by-product of this study on Mn II.

We have computed spectral libraries with effective temperature ($T\rm{_{eff}}$) ranging from 3500 to 8000 K for the automated chemical analy\-sis of the survey data. The libraries, used to derive stellar parameters and abundances from the APOGEE spectra in the SDSS--III data release 12 (DR12), are based on ATLAS9 model atmospheres and the ASS$ε$T spectral synthesis code. We present a second set of libraries based on MARCS model atmospheres and the spectral synthesis code Turbospectrum. The ATLAS9/ASS$ε$T ($T\rm{_{eff}}$ = 3500$-$8000 K) and MARCS/Turbospectrum ($T\rm{_{eff}}$ = 3500$-$5500 K) grids cover a wide range of metallicity ($-$2.5 $\leq$ [M/H] $\leq$ $+$0.5 dex), surface gravity (0 $\leq$ log $g$ $\leq$ 5 dex), microturbulence (0.5 $\leq$ $ξ$ $\leq$ 8 km~s$^{-1}$), carbon ($-$1 $\leq$ [C/M] $\leq$ $+$1 dex), nitrogen ($-$1 $\leq$ [N/M] $\leq$ $+$1 dex), and $α$-element ($-$1 $\leq$ [$α$/M] $\leq$ $+$1 dex) variations, having thus seven dimensions. We compare the ATLAS9/ASS$ε$T and MARCS/Turbospectrum libraries and apply both of them to the analysis of the observed H$-$band spectra of the Sun and the K2 giant Arcturus, as well as to a selected sample of well-known giant stars observed at very high-resolution. The new APOGEE libraries are publicly available and can be employed for chemical studies in the H$-$band using other high-resolution spectrographs.

The aim of this study is to carry out an abundance determination, to search for spectral variability and for the presence of a weak magnetic field in the typical PGa star HD19400. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise HARPS spectropolarimetric observations of HD19400 were obtained at three different epochs in 2011 and 2013. For the first time, we present abundances of various elements determined using an ATLAS12 model, including the abundances of a number of elements not analysed by previous studies, such as Ne I, Ga II, and Xe II. Several lines of As II are also present in the spectra of HD19400. To study the variability, we compared the behaviour of the line profiles of various elements. We report on the first detection of anomalous shapes of line profiles belonging to Mn and Hg, and the variability of the line profiles belonging to the elements Hg, P, Mn, Fe, and Ga. We suggest that the variability of the line profiles of these elements is caused by their non-uniform surface distribution, similar to the presence of chemical spots detected in HgMn stars. The search for the presence of a magnetic field was carried out using the moment technique and the SVD method. Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using 22 Mn II lines indicate the potential existence of a weak variable longitudinal magnetic field on the first epoch. The SVD method applied to the Mn II lines indicates <B_z>=-76+-25G on the first epoch, and at the same epoch the SVD analysis of the observations using the Fe II lines shows <B_z>=-91+-35G. The calculated false alarm probability values, 0.008 and 0.003, respectively, are above the value 10^{-3}, indicating no detection.

The magnetic field geometries of these stars, investigated with spectropolarimetric time series, can likely be described by centred dipoles with polar magnetic field strengths of several hundred Gauss. A number of Herbig Ae/Be stars with detected magnetic fields have recently been observed with X-shooter in the visible and the near-IR, as well as with the high-resolution near-IR spectrograph CRIRES. These observations are of great importance to understand the relation between the magnetic field topology and the physics of the accretion flow and the accretion disk gas emission.

We report a significant change from an orbit for the SB2 system derived from 1999-2000 observations. We obtain abundances from the primary and secondary spectra. The abundance analysis uses both detailed spectral synthesis and determinations based on equivalent widths of weak absorption lines with W(lambda) typically < 25 mA. Abundances are derived for 25 elements in the primary, and 17 elements in the secondary. Apart from lithium and zirconium, abundances do not depart significantly from solar. Lithium may be marginally enhanced with respect to the meteoritic value in the primary. It somewhat depleted in the secondary. The emission-line spectrum is typical of Herbig Ae stars. We compare and contrast the spectra of the HD 104237 primary and two other Herbig Ae stars with low v.sin(i), HD 101412 and HD 190073.

The frequent presence of weak magnetic fields on the surface of spotted late-B stars with HgMn peculiarity in binary systems has been controversial during the two last decades.
We re-analyse available spectropolarimetric material by applying the moment technique on spectral lines of inhomogeneously distributed elements separately. Furthermore, we present new determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field for the HgMn star HD65949 and the hotter analog of HgMn stars, the PGa star HD19400, using FORS2 installed at the VLT. We also give new measurements of the eclipsing system AR Aur with a primary star of HgMn peculiarity which were obtained with the SOFIN spectropolarimeter installed at the Nordic Optical Telescope.
We downloaded from the ESO archive the publically available HARPS spectra for eight HgMn stars and one normal and one superficially normal B-type star obtained in 2010. The application of the moment technique to the HARPS and SOFIN spectra allowed us to study the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field, the crossover effect, and quadratic magnetic fields. Results for the HgMn star HD65949 and the PGa star HD19400 are based on a linear regression analysis of low-resolution spectra obtained with FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode.
Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using spectral lines of several elements separately reveal the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field, a quadratic magnetic field, and the crossover effect on the surface of several HgMn stars as well as normal and superficially normal B-type stars. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the existence of intriguing correlations between the strength of the magnetic field, abundance anomalies, and binary properties.

We present a new grid of model photospheres for the SDSS-III/APOGEE survey of stellar populations of the Galaxy, calculated using the ATLAS9 and MARCS codes. New opacity distribution functions were generated to calculate ATLAS9 model photospheres. MARCS models were calculated based on opacity sampling techniques. The metallicity ([M/H]) spans from -5 to 1.5 for ATLAS and -2.5 to 0.5 for MARCS models. There are three main differences with respect to previous ATLAS9 model grids: a new corrected H2O linelist, a wide range of carbon ([C/M]) and alpha element [alpha/M] variations, and solar reference abundances from Asplund et al. 2005. The added range of varying carbon and alpha element abundances also extends the previously calculated MARCS model grids. Altogether 1980 chemical compositions were used for the ATLAS9 grid, and 175 for the MARCS grid. Over 808 thousand ATLAS9 models were computed spanning temperatures from 3500K to 30000K and log g from 0 to 5, where larger temperatures only have high gravities. The MARCS models span from 3500K to 5500K, and log g from 0 to 5. All model atmospheres are publically available online.

The recent availability of ESO's high-resolution spectrograph CRIRES offers now the opportunity to study numerous spectral features in the near-IR in intermediate-mass main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars. High-resolution CRIRES spectra were obtained in three spectral regions, two regions around 1mu and one region around 1.57mu containing magnetically sensitive Fe I lines. The largest number of near-IR spectral features was detected and identified in the well-studied magnetic Ap star gamma Equ. Nearly 30% of the spectral lines in the Ap star HD154708, with one of the strongest magnetic fields known among the Ap stars of the order of 25kG, remain unidentified due to a lack of atomic data. Only very few lines belonging to the rare earth element group have been identified in both Ap stars. A number of spectral lines including the Ce III and Dy II lines appear magnetically split due to the presence of a strong magnetic field in their atmospheres. Variable behaviour of lines of the elements He, N, Mg, Si, and Fe over the rotation period in the spectra of HD101412 confirm our previous finding of variability in the optical region. Due to the very fast rotation of 51Oph, only a few spectral lines have been identified with certainty.

In spite of large overabundances of Xe II observed in numerous mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars, Xe II oscillator strengths are only available for a very limited number of transitions. As a consequence, several unidentified lines in the spectra of HgMn stars could be due to Xe II. In addition, some predicted Xe II lines are redshifted by about 0.1 A from stellar unidentified lines, raising the question about the wavelength accuracy of the Xe II line data available in the literature. For these reasons we investigated the Xe II lines lying in the 3900-4521 A, 4769-7542 A, and 7660-8000 A spectral ranges of four well-studied HgMn stars. We compared the Xe II wavelengths listed in the NIST database with the position of the lines observed in the high-resolution UVES spectrum of the xenon-overabundant, slowly rotating HgMn stars HR 6000, and we modified them when needed. We derived astrophysical oscillator strengths for all the Xe II observed lines and compared them with the literature values, when available. In this framework, we performed a complete abundance analysis of HD 71066, while we relied on our previous works for the other stars. We find that all the lines with wavelengths related to the 6d and 7s energy levels have a corresponding unidentified spectral line, blueshifted by the same quantity of about 0.1 A in all the four stars, so that we identified these lines as coming from Xe II and modified their NIST wavelength value according to the observed stellar value. We find that the Xe II stellar oscillator strengths may differ from one star to another from 0.0 dex to 0.3 dex. We adopted the average of the oscillator strengths derived from the four stars as final astrophysical oscillator strength.

Semiempirical line data for Fe II computed by Kurucz are used to synthesize the spectrum of the slow-rotating, Fe-overabundant CP star HR 6000. We determined a total of 109 new 4f levels for Fe II with energies ranging from 122324 cm^-1 to 128110 cm^-1. We also found 14 even levels from 4d (3 levels), 5d (7 levels), and 6d (4 levels) configurations. The new levels have allowed us to identify more than 50% of the previously unidentified lines of HR 6000 in the wavelength region 3800-8000 A. Tables listing the new energy levels are given in the paper; tables listing the spectral lines with log gf >/= -1.5 that are transitions to the 4f energy levels are given in the Online Material. These new levels produce 18000 lines throughout the spectrum from the ultraviolet to the infrared.

From these observations we reconstruct the spectra of the individual components and perform an abundance analysis of all four stellar members. We found that all components are chemically peculiar with different abundances patters. In particular, the two less massive stars show typical characteristics of HgMn stars. The two most massive stars in the system show variable line profiles indicating the presence of chemical spots. Given the youth of the system and the notable chemical peculiarities of their components, this system could give important insights in the origin of chemical anomalies.

The analysis of the high-resolution UVES spectra of the CP stars HR 6000 and 46 Aql revealed the presence of an impressive number of unidentified lines, in particular in the 5000 - 5400 A region. Because numerous 4d-4f transitions of FeII lie in this spectral range, and because both stars are iron overabundant, we investigated whether the unidentified lines can be due to FeII. ATLAS12 model atmospheres with parameters [13450K, 4.3] and [12560K, 3.8] were computed for the individual abundances of HR 6000 and 46 Aql, respectively, in order to use the stars as spectroscopic sources to identify FeII lines and to determine FeII gf-values. After having identified several unknown lines in the stellar spectra as due to (3H)4d - (3H)4f transitions of FeII, we derived stellar log gf's for them by comparing observed and computed profiles. The energies of the upper levels were assigned on the basis of both laboratory iron spectra and predicted energy levels. We fixed 21 new levels of FeII with energies between 122910.9 cm^-1 and 123441.1 cm^-1. They allowed us to add 1700 new lines to the Fe II line list in the range 810 - 15011 A.

Aims: The iron abundance gradient in the Galactic stellar disk provides fundamental constraints on the chemical evolution of this important Galaxy component. However the spread around the mean slope is, at fixed Galactocentric distance, larger than estimated uncertainties. Methods: To provide quantitative constraints on these trends we adopted iron abundances for 265 classical Cepheids (more than 50% of the currently known sample) based either on high-resolution spectra or on photometric metallicity indices. Homogeneous distances were estimated using near-infrared Period-Luminosity relations. The sample covers the four disk quadrants and their Galactocentric distances range from ~5 to ~17 kpc. Results: A linear regression over the entire sample provides an iron gradient of -0.051+/-0.004 dex/kpc. The above slope agrees quite well, within the errors, with previous estimates based either on Cepheids or on open clusters covering similar Galactocentric distances. However, once we split the sample in inner (Rg < 8 kpc) and outer disk Cepheids we found that the slope (-0.130+/-0.015 dex/kpc) in the former region is ~3 times steeper than the slope in the latter one (-0.042+/-0.004 dex/kpc). We found that in the outer disk the radial distribution of metal-poor (MP, [Fe/H]<-0.02 dex) and metal-rich (MR) Cepheids across the four disk quadrants does not show a clear trend when moving from the innermost to the external disk regions. We also found that the relative fractions of MP and MR Cepheids in the 1st and in the 3rd quadrant differ at 8 sigma (MP) and 15 sigma (MR) level.

Large abundance anomalies have been previously detected in Horizontal Branch B-type stars. We present the first high resolution study of isotopic anomalies and chemical abundances in six Horizontal Branch B-type stars in globular clusters NGC6397 and NGC6752 and compare them to those observed in HgMn stars.
We obtained high-resolution (up to R~115000) UVES spectra of a representative sample of six B-type stars (T183, T191, T193, B652, B2151, B2206).
It is the first time an abundance analysis is performed for all elements for which spectral lines were detected in UVES spectra of Horizontal Branch B-type stars. Our study of these stars revealed no signs of He isotopic anomalies which would produce a ^3He/^4He ratio different from the solar one. The isotopic anomaly of Ca is detected in all six studied stars. The chemical abundance analysis reveals an overabundance over the solar values of P, Ti, Mn, Fe, and Y and an overabundance over the cluster metallicity of Mg, Ca, and Cr. This behaviour is very similar in all six studied stars of both clusters with a few exceptions: The Na abundance is by more than 1.4dex larger than the cluster metallicity in B652, and by more than 0.8dex larger than the cluster metallicity in B2206; the Co abundance is 1.0dex over the solar abundance for T191, while Zr is overabundant over the solar abundance by 0.4dex in B2206. No lines of Hg or other heavy elements were observed in the spectra. Weak emission lines of Ti II, similar to those frequently observed in HgMn stars were discovered in one Horizontal Branch B-type star T191. Further, we detected a radial velocity change of 0.9km s^-1 from one night to the next for T183 and 0.4km s^-1 for B2151.

They cover a broad range in metal abundance (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5) and the intrinsic accuracy of the Metallicity Index Color (MIC) relations is better than 0.2 dex. The theoretical calibration relies on a homogeneous set of scaled-solar evolutionary tracks for intermediate-mass stars and on pulsation predictions concerning the topology of the instability strip. The metal content of the adopted evolutionary tracks ranges from Z=0.001 to Z=0.03 and the intrinsic accuracy of the MIC relations is better than 0.1 dex.

Stellar parameters Teff=12850K, logg=4.10, and xi=0km/s, as determined from H_beta, H_gamma, H_delta Balmer profiles and from the Fe I, Fe II ionization equilibrium, were used to compute an individual abundances ATLAS12 model. We identified spectral peculiarities and obtained final stellar abundances by comparing observed and computed equivalent widths and line profiles. The adopted model fails to reproduce the (b-y) and c color indices. The spectral analysis has revealed: the presence of emission lines for Mn II, Cr II, and Fe II; isotopic anomalies for Hg, Ca; the presence of interstellar lines of Na I at lambda lambda 3302.3, 3302.9, 5890, 5896 A, and of K I at 7665, 7699 A; the presence of a huge quantity of unidentified lines, which we presume to be mostly due to Fe II transitions owing to the large Fe overabundance amounting to [+0.7]. The main chemical peculiarities are an extreme overabundance of Xe, followed by those of Hg, P, Y, Mn, Fe, Be, and Ti. The most underabundant element is Si, followed by C, N, Al, S, Mg, V, Sr, Co, Cl, Sc, and Ni. The silicon underabundance [-2.9] is the lowest value for Si ever observed in any HgMn star. The observed lines of He I can not be reproduced by a single value of the He abundance, but they require values ranging from [-0.8] to [-1.6]. Furthermore, when the observed and computed wings of He I lines are fitted, the observed line cores are much weaker than the computed ones. From the present analysis we infer the presence of vertical abundance stratification for He, Mn, and possibly also P.

Large wavelength shifts of infrared triplet lines of Ca II have been observed in the spectra of HgMn and magnetic Ap stars. They have been attributed to the heavy calcium isotopes, including Ca-48. One member of the triplet, $λ$8542, had been either unavailable, or of poor quality in earlier spectra. The present material shows conclusively that the stellar $λ$8542 shifts are consistent with an interpretation in terms of Ca-48. We find no relation between isotopic shifts of the Ca II triplet lines, and those of Hg II $λ$3984. There is a marginal indication that the shifts are {\it anticorrelated} with the surface field strengths of the magnetic stars. We see sparse evidence for Ca-48 in other chemically peculiar stars, e.g. Am's, metal-poor stars, or chemically peculiar red giants. However, the sample is still very small, and the wavelengths of all three triplet lines, including those in the Sun, show slight positive shifts with respect to terrestrial positions.
Some profiles of the Ca II infrared triplet in the magnetic stars show extensive wings beyond a well-defined core. We can obtain reasonable fits to these profiles using a stratified calcium abundance similar to that used by previous workers. There is no indication that either the stratification or the Zeeman effect significantly disturbs the measurement of isotope shifts.

We evaluate the effects that variations in He content have on bolometric corrections and Teff-colour relations. To this aim, we compute ATLAS9 model atmospheres and spectral energy distributions for effective temperatures ranging from 3500 K to 40000 K for dwarfs and from 3500 K to 8000 K for giants, considering both ``He-non enhanced'' and ``He-enhanced'' compositions. The considered variations in He content are of DeltaY = +0.1 and +0.2 for the metallicity [M/H]=+0.5 and DeltaY=+0.1 for [M/H]=-0.5 and -1.5. Then, synthetic photometry is performed in the UBVRIJHK system. We conclude that the changes in bolometric corrections, caused by the adopted He-enhancements are in general too small (less than 0.01 mag), for both dwarfs and giants, to be affecting present-day tables of bolometric corrections at a significant level. The only possible exceptions are found for the U-band at Teff between 4000 K and 8000 K, where |Delta BC_U| amounts to ~0.02 mag, and for Teff equal to 3500 K, where |Delta BC_lambda| values become clearly much higher (up to 0.06 mag for passbands from U to V). However, even in the latter case the overall uncertainty caused by variations in the He content may be not so significant, because the ATLAS9 results are still approximative at their lowest temperature limit.

[Abridged] We present a large, new set of stellar evolution models and isochrones for an alpha-enhanced metal distribution typical of Galactic halo and bulge stars; it represents a homogeneous extension of our stellar model library for a distribution already presented in Pietrinferni et al.(2004). The effect of the alpha-element enhancement has been properly taken into account in the nuclear network, opacity, equation of state and, for the first time, the bolometric corrections, and color transformations. This allows us to avoid the inconsistent use - common to all alpha-enhanced model libraries currently available - of scaled-solar bolometric corrections and color transformations for alpha-enhanced models and isochrones. We show how bolometric corrections to magnitudes obtained for the U,B portion of stellar spectra for T_{eff}<=6500K, are significantly affected by the metal mixture, especially at the higher metallicities. We also provide complete sets of evolutionary models for low-mass, He-burning stellar structures covering the whole metallicity range, to enable synthetic horizontal branch simulations. We compare our database with several widely used stellar model libraries from different authors, as well as with various observed color magnitude and color-color diagrams (Johnson-Cousins BVI and near infrared magnitudes, Stromgren colors) of Galactic field stars and globular clusters. We also test our isochrones comparing integrated optical colors and Surface Brightness Fluctuation magnitudes with selected globular cluster data. We find a general satisfactory agreement with the empirical constraints.

The Gaia mission is designed as a Galaxy explorer, and will measure simultaneously, in a survey mode, the five or six phase space parameters of all stars brighter than 20th magnitude, as well as providing a description of their astrophysical characteristics. These measurements are obtained by combining an astrometric instrument with micro-arcsecond capabilities, a photometric system giving the magnitudes and colours in 15 bands and a medium resolution spectrograph named the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS). The latter instrument will produce spectra in the 848 to 874 nm wavelength range, with a resolving power R = 11 500, from which radial velocities, rotational velocities, atmospheric parameters and abundances can be derived. A companion paper (Katz et al. 2004) presents the characteristics of the RVS and its performance. This paper details the outstanding scientific impact of this important part of the Gaia satellite on some key open questions in present day astrophysics. The unbiased and simultaneous acquisition of multi-epoch radial velocities and individual abundances of key elements in parallel with the astrometric parameters is essential for the determination of the dynamical state and formation history of our Galaxy. Moreover, for stars brighter than V=15, the resolving power of the RVS will give information about most of the effects which influence the position of a star in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, placing unprecedented constraints on the age, internal structure and evolution of stars of all types. Finally, the RVS multi-epoch observations are ideally suited to the identification, classification and characterisation of the many types of double, multiple and variable stars.

We propose a zero-point photometric calibration of the data from the ACS/WFC on board the Hubble Space Telescope, based on a spectrum of Vega and the most up to date in-flight transmission curves of the camera. This calibration is accurate at the level of a few hundredths of a magnitude. The main purpose of this effort is to transform the entire set of evolutionary models by Pietrinferni et al. (2004) into a simple observational photometric system for ACS/WFC data, and make them available to the astronomical community. We provide the zero points for the most used ACS/WFC bands, and give basic recipes for calibrating both the observed data and the models.
We also present the Colour Magnitude Diagram (CMD) from ACS data of 5 Galactic globular clusters, spanning the metallicity range -2.2<[Fe/H]<-0.04, and provide fiducial points representing their sequences from several magnitudes below the turnoff to the red giant branch tip. The observed sequences are compared with the models in the newly defined photometric system.

We have performed the first extensive analysis of the impact of an [alpha/Fe]>0 metal distribution on broadband colors in the parameter space (surface gravity, effective temperature, metal content) covered by Galactic globular cluster stars.A comparison of updated and homogeneous ATLAS9 UBVRIJHKL synthetic photometry, for both alpha-enhanced and scaled-solar metal distributions, has shown that it is impossible to reproduce alpha-enhanced (B-V) and (U-B) color transformations with simple rescalings of the scaled-solar ones. At [Fe/H]$\sim -$2.0 alpha-enhanced transformations are well reproduced by scaled-solar ones with the same [Fe/H], but this good agreement breaks down at [Fe/H] larger than about -1.6.As a general rule, (B-V) and (U-B) alpha-enhanced colors are bluer than scaled-solar ones at either the same [Fe/H] or [M/H], and the differences increase with increasing metallicity and decreasing T_eff. A preliminary analysis of the contribution of the various alpha elements to the stellar colors shows that the magnesium abundance (and to lesser extent oxygen and silicon) is the main responsible for these differences. On the contrary, the bolometric correction to the V band and more infrared colors predicted by alpha-enhanced transformations are well reproduced by scaled-solar results, due to their weak dependence on the metal content.Key parameters like the Turn Off and Zero Age Horizontal Branch V magnitudes, as well as the red Giant Branch tip I magnitude obtained from theoretical isochrones are in general unaffected when using the appropriate alpha-enhanced transformations in place of scaled-solar ones. We have also studied the effect of boundary conditions obtained from appropriate alpha-enhanced model atmospheres on the evolutionary tracks in the HR diagram.

We present a large and updated stellar evolution database for low-, intermediate- and high-mass stars in a wide metallicity range, suitable for studying Galactic and extragalactic simple and composite stellar populations using population synthesis techniques. The stellar mass range is between \sim0.5Mo and 10Mo with a fine mass spacing. The metallicity [Fe/H] comprises 10 values ranging from -2.27 to 0.40, with a scaled solar metal distribution. The initial He mass fraction ranges from Y=0.245, for the more metal-poor composition, up to 0.303 for the more metal-rich one, with Delta Y/Delta Z\sim 1.4. For each adopted chemical composition, the evolutionary models have been computed without and with overshooting from the Schwarzschild boundary of the convective cores during the central H-burning phase. The whole set of evolutionary models can be used to compute isochrones in a wide age range, from \sim30 Myr to \sim15Gyr. Both evolutionary tracks and isochrones are available in several observational planes, employing updated set of bolometric corrections and color-Te relations computed for this project. The number of points along the models and the resulting isochrones is selected in such a way that interpolation for intermediate metallicities not contained in the grid is straightforward. We compare our isochrones with results from different stellar evolution databases and perform some empirical tests for the reliability of our models. Since this work is devoted to scaled solar compositions, we focus our attention on the Galactic disk populations, employing multicolor photometry of unevolved field MS stars with precise Hipparcos parallaxes, well-studied open clusters and one eclipsing binary system with precise measurements of masses, radii and [Fe/H] of both components.

New grids of ATLAS9 model atmospheres for Teff from 3500K to 50000K and logg from 0.0 dex to 5.0 dex have been computed for several metallicities with the new ODFs. Preliminary comparisons of the results from the old and new models have shown differences in the energy distributions of stars cooler than 4500K, in the ultraviolet energy distribution of metal-poor A-type stars, in the U-B and u-b color indices for Teff<7000K and in all the color indices for Teff<4250K.

In a previous paper we reported on a discontinuity in the extreme horizontal branch (EHB) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC6752, which we called the second U-jump. This feature was attributed to a combination of post zero-age horizontal branch evolution and diffusion effects. In this follow-up study we analyze other EHB clusters and show that the second U-jump is a common feature among EHB clusters reaching T_{eff}\ge 23,000K, and that its onset in different clusters converges around T_{eff}\sim 21,000\pm3,000K. We also present near-ultraviolet diagrams of ωCen and NGC2808, the only two objects with spectroscopically confirmed ``blue hook'' stars (T_{eff}\ge 35,000K). We confirm predictions of a photometric discontinuity separating late from early-helium flashers. Moreover, we present empirical evidence that the second U-jump population might be mainly composed by early-helium flashers. Lastly, we revisit the discussion on the ubiquitous nature of the gaps and jumps so far identified in the blue HB tails, suggesting a possible discrete nature of the distribution in temperature of the HB stars.

Cross-sections across the multi-dimensional data-cube are used to illustrate the behaviour of the strongest spectral lines. Interpretation of real data will have to include interpolation to grid substeps. We present a simple estimate of the accuracy of such a procedure.

In this paper we report on a curious feature in the V, (U-B) color-magnitude diagrams of globular clusters. In our database, we find that a considerable fraction of blue horizontal branch stars, hotter than the instability strip and cooler than the Grundahl et al. (1999) jump (i.e., 6000 <~ T_eff K <~ 10000), have (U-B) colors redder than their red giant progenitors. This red incursion is not expected on theoretical grounds, as horizontal branch stars (whose convective regions are less extended than in red giant structures) should not ``appear'' cooler than a red giant. Analyzing data from different telescopes we show that: 1) the horizontal branch red incursion is strongly dependent on the shape of the adopted U filter and to a lesser extent, on the B filter; 2) the photometry done with U filters which do not encompass the Balmer jump, do not show the blue horizontal branch red incursion; 3) the occurrence of this feature is also due to the peculiar dependence of the U and B magnitudes on stars effective temperature, gravity, and metallicity; 4) theoretical tracks can reproduce the observed horizontal branch morphology, provided that the appropriate (i.e. exactly responding to the filters effectively used in the observations) transmission curve efficiencies are used for deriving color-T_eff transformations; 5) the red incursion extent depends on metallicity.

New determinations of temperature, gravity, reddening and abundances were obtained from these data using models computed by Castelli with an updated version of the ATLAS9 code. A summary of the visual photometry for these stars (including new photometry obtained at Kitt Peak) is also given. All 31 candidates are halo stars. We classify 28 as BHB stars because: (1) They lie close to the ZAHB (in a similar position to globular cluster BHB stars) in the Teff vs. log g plot. (2) Their distribution of vsini (less than 40 km/s) is similar to that found for the BHB stars in globular clusters. (3) Their [Fe/H] lies between -0.99 and -2.95 (mean [Fe/H] -1.67, dispersion 0.42 dex) which is similar to that found for field halo RR Lyrae and red HB stars but more metal- poor than for halo globular clusters. Field BHB stars with Teff greater than 8500 K show the He I (4471 A) line corresponding to solar abundance. (4) They show a similar average enhancement of the alpha-elements ([Mg/Fe] = +0.43 +/- 0.04 and [Ti/Fe] = +0.44 +/- 0.02) to that found for other halo field stars of similar metallicity. Comments are given on a further 25 stars that have previously been suggested to be BHB stars; these were not included in our sample because they did not fulfil one or more of the above criteria.

With respect to previous B-W analyses we have applied the following improvements: a) use of all sets of available data, after proper comparison for homogeneity and compatibility; b) use of the most recent and accurate model atmospheres, with turbulent velocity V(turb) = 4 km/s and the no-overshooting approximation, and comparison with other treatments of convection; c) use of the instantaneous gravity along the pulsation cycle rather than the mean value; d) comparison with modified radial velocity curves according to various assumptions on radial velocity gradients in the atmosphere; and e) careful reanalysis of the temperature scale. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the above items on the B-W results and verify whether any (or a combination) of them can possibly account for the discrepancy of the absolute magnitude zero-point with respect to other independent determinations.

Abundances are derived by means of the synthetic spectra technique employing Kurucz (1993) atmospheric models, with enhanced alpha-elements and no overshooting. The derived abundances together with those available in literature show that for -2.7 < [Fe/H] < -0.8 Be correlates linearly with iron [Be] proportional to 1.07(+/- 0.08)[Fe/H], giving strength to previous results. However, a steeper correlation is still possible at metallicities lower than [Fe/H]<-1.4 with [Be] proportional to 1.6(+/- 0.44)[Fe/H]. When iron is replaced with oxygen, Be is found tracking closely oxygen up to solar values, without signs of breaking in correspondence of the onset of the Galactic disk. No evidence of intrinsic dispersion is found, ought to the large errors involved in the Be abundance determinations, but for three stars (HD 106516, HD 3795, HD 211998) a significant upper limit in the Be abundance can be placed at about 1 dex below the mean trend of the Be-Fe relation. For such stars non conventional mixing is required to explain Be depletion. Be observations can be used to discriminate strongly Li-depleted stars. These are the stars which show less Li than that expected by high energy cosmic rays production as deduced from Be observations. The available Be observations imply that some of the stars which contribute to the scatter in the Li-Fe diagramme are Li-depleted stars.
