We investigate the abundance and distribution of metals in the high-redshift intergalactic medium and circum-galactic medium through the analysis of a sample of almost 600 SiIV absorption lines detected in high and intermediate resolution spectra of 147 quasars. The evolution of the number density of SiIV lines, the column density distribution function and the cosmic mass density are studied in the redshift interval 1.7 <= z <= 6.2 and for log N(SiIV) >= 12.5. All quantities show a rapid increase between z~6 and z< 5 and then an almost constant behaviour to z~2 in very good agreement with what is already observed for CIV absorption lines. The present results are challenging for numerical simulations: when simulations reproduce our SiIV results, they tend to underpredict the properties of CIV, and when the properties of CIV are reproduced, the number of strong SiIV lines (log N(SiIV) > 14) is overpredicted.

We use high-resolution quasar spectra obtained from the ESO-UVES advanced data products (EUADP) database. We present 3 new measurements and 5 upper limits of ArI. We further compiled DLAs/sub-DLA data from the literature with measurements available of argon and alpha-capture elements (S or Si), making up a total of 37 systems, i.e. the largest DLA argon sample investigated so far. We confirm that argon is generally deficient in DLAs, with a mean value [Ar/alpha]= -0.4+/-0.06dex (standard error of the mean). The [Ar/alpha] ratios show a weak, positive trend with increasing NHI and increasing absorption redshift, and a weak, negative trend with dust-free metallicity, [S/H]. Detailed analysis of the abundance ratios indicates that ArI ionisation, rather than dust depletion or nucleosynthetic evolution, is responsible for the argon deficiency. Altogether, the observational evidence is consistent with a scenario of argon ionisation dominated by quasar metagalactic radiation modulated by local HI self-shielding inside the DLA host galaxies. Our measurements and limits of argon abundances suggest that the cosmic reionisation of HeII is completed above z=3, but more measurements at z(abs)>3.5 are required to probe the final stages of this process of cosmic reionisation.

Large statistical samples of quasar spectra have previously indicated possible cosmological variations in the fine-structure constant, $α$. A smaller sample of higher signal-to-noise ratio spectra, with dedicated calibration, would allow a detailed test of this evidence. Towards that end, we observed equatorial quasar HS 1549$+$1919 with three telescopes: the Very Large Telescope, Keck and, for the first time in such analyses, Subaru. By directly comparing these spectra to each other, and by `supercalibrating' them using asteroid and iodine-cell tests, we detected and removed long-range distortions of the quasar spectra's wavelength scales which would have caused significant systematic errors in our $α$ measurements. For each telescope we measure the relative deviation in $α$ from the current laboratory value, $Δα/α$, in 3 absorption systems at redshifts $z_{\mathrm{abs}}=1.143$, 1.342, and 1.802. The nine measurements of $Δα/α$ are all consistent with zero at the 2-$σ$ level, with 1-$σ$ statistical (systematic) uncertainties 5.6--24 (1.8--7.0) parts per million (ppm). They are also consistent with each other at the 1-$σ$ level, allowing us to form a combined value for each telescope and, finally, a single value for this line of sight: $Δα/α=-5.4 \pm 3.3_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 1.5_{\mathrm{sys}}$ ppm, consistent with both zero and previous, large samples. We also average all Large Programme results measuring $Δα/α=-0.6 \pm 1.9_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.9_{\mathrm{sys}}$ ppm. Our results demonstrate the robustness and reliability at the 3 ppm level afforded by supercalibration techniques and direct comparison of spectra from different telescopes.

We report here a study of nitrogen and $α$-capture element (O, S, and Si) abundances in 18 Damped Ly$α$ Absorbers (DLAs) and sub-DLAs drawn from the ESO-UVES Advanced Data Products (EUADP) database. We report 9 new measurements, 5 upper and 4 lower limits of nitrogen that when compiled with available nitrogen measurements from the literature makes a sample of 108 systems. The extended sample presented here confirms the [N/$α$] bimodal behaviour suggested in previous studies. Three-quarter of the systems show $\langle$[N/$α$]$\rangle=-0.85$ ($\pm$0.20 dex) and one-quarter ratios are clustered at $\langle$[N/$α$]$\rangle= -1.41$ ($\pm$0.14 dex). The high [N/$α$] plateau is consistent with the HII regions of dwarf irregular and blue compact dwarf galaxies although extended to lower metallicities and could be interpreted as the result of a primary nitrogen production by intermediate mass stars. The low [N/$α$] values are the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site. In spite of this fact, even lower values could be measured with the present instrumentation, but we do not find them below [N/$α$] $\approx$ $-1.7$. This suggests the presence of a floor in [N/$α$] abundances, which along with the lockstep increase of N and Si may indicate a primary nitrogen production from fast rotating, massive stars in relatively young or unevolved systems.

DLA and sub-DLA systems with typical metallicities of -3.0<Z/Z_sun<-0.5 are excellent tools to study nitrogen production. We made a search for nitrogen in the ESO-UVES advanced data products (EUADP) database. In the EUADP database, we find 10 new measurements and 9 upper limits of nitrogen. We further compiled DLA/sub-DLA data from the literature with estimates available of nitrogen and alpha-elements. This yields a total of 98 systems, i.e. the largest nitrogen abundance sample investigated so far. In agreement with previous studies, we indeed find a bimodal [N/alpha] behaviour: three-quarter systems show a mean value of [N/alpha]=-0.87 with a scatter of 0.21 dex and one-quarter shows ratios clustered at [N/alpha]=-1.43 with a lower dispersion of 0.13 dex. The high [N/alpha] group is consistent with the blue compact dwarves and dwarf irregular galaxies, suggesting primary nitrogen production. The low [N/alpha] group is the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site and probably provides an evidence of the primary production by fast rotating massive stars in young sites. Moreover, we find a transition between the two [N/alpha] groups around [N/H]=-2.5. The transition is not abrupt and there are a few systems lying in the transition region. Additional observations of DLAs/sub-DLAs below [N/H]<-2.5 would provide more clues.

Absorption-line systems detected in high resolution quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of dimensionless fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant, alpha, and the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu = m_p/m_e, as measured in remote regions of the Universe to their value today on Earth. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations in alpha on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of 10 ppm . We are conducting a Large Programme of observations with VLT UVES to explore these variations. We here provide a general overview of the Large Programme and report on the first results for these two constants, discussed in detail in Molaro et al. and Rahmani et al. A stringent bound for Delta(alpha)/Alpha is obtained for the absorber at_abs = 1.6919 towards HE 2217-2818. The absorption profile is complex with several very narrow features, and is modeled with 32 velocity components. The relative variation in alpha in this system is +1.3+-2.4_{stat}+-1.0_{sys} ppm if Al II lambda 1670AA and three Fe II transitions are used, and +1.1+-2.6_{stat} ppm in a lightly different analysis with only Fe II transitions used. The expectation at this sky position of the recently-reported dipolar variation of alpha is (3.2--5.4)+-1.7 ppm depending on dipole model. This constraint of Delta(alpha)/alpha at face value is not supporting this expectation but is not inconsistent with it at the 3 sigma level. For the proton-to-electron mass ratio the analysis of the H_2 absorption lines of the z_{abs}~2.4018 damped Ly alpha system towards HE 0027- 1836 provides Delta(mu)/mu = (-7.6 +- 8.1_{stat} +- 6.3_{sys}) ppm which is also consistent with a null variation. Aims. To validate the Einstein equivalence principle (local position invariance) by limiting the fractional changes in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, mu = m_e/m_p, measured in Galactic plane objects. Methods. High resolution spectral observations of dark clouds in the inversion line of NH3(1,1) and pure rotational lines of other molecules (the so-called ammonia method) were performed at the Medicina 32-m and the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescopes to measure the radial velocity offsets, Delta RV = V_rot - V_inv, between the rotational and inversion transitions which have different sensitivities to the value of mu. Results. In our previous observations (2008-2010), a mean offset of <Delta RV> = 0.027+/-0.010 km/s [3 sigma confidence level (C.L.)] was measured. To test for possible hidden errors, we carried out additional observations of a sample of molecular cores in 2010-2013. As a result, a systematic error in the radial velocities of an amplitude ~0.02 km/s was revealed. The averaged offset between the radial velocities of the rotational transitions of HC3N(2-1), HC5N(9-8), HC7N(16-15), HC7N(21-20), and HC7N(23-22), and the inversion transition of NH3(1,1) <Delta RV> = 0.003+/-0.018 km/s (3 sigma C.L.). This value, when interpreted in terms of Delta mu/mu= (mu_obs - mu_lab)/mu_lab, constraints the mu-variation at the level of Delta mu/mu < 2*10^{-8} (3 sigma C.L.), which is the most stringent limit on the fractional changes in mu based on astronomical observations.

We present an accurate analysis of the H2 absorption lines from the zabs ~ 2.4018 damped Lyα system towards HE 0027-1836 observed with the Very Large Telescope Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (VLT/UVES) as a part of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "The UVES large programme for testing fundamental physics" to constrain the variation of proton-to-electron mass ratio, μ = mp/me. We perform cross-correlation analysis between 19 individual exposures taken over three years and the combined spectrum to check the wavelength calibration stability. We notice the presence of a possible wavelength dependent velocity drift especially in the data taken in 2012. We use available asteroids spectra taken with UVES close to our observations to confirm and quantify this effect. We consider single and two component Voigt profiles to model the observed H2 absorption profiles. We use both linear regression analysis and Voigt profile fitting where Δμ/μ is explicitly considered as an additional fitting parameter. The two component model is marginally favored by the statistical indicators and we get Δμ/μ = (-2.5 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.2(sys)) ppm. When we apply the correction to the wavelength dependent velocity drift we find Δμ/μ = (-7.6 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.3(sys)) ppm. It will be important to check the extent to which the velocity drift we notice in this study is present in UVES data used for previous Δμ/μ measurements.

We present the results of observations taken with the X-shooter spectrograph devoted to the study of quasars at z ~ 6. This paper focuses on the properties of metals at high redshift traced, in particular, by the C IV doublet absorption systems. Six objects were observed with resolutions ~27 and 34 km/s in the visual, and 37.5 and 53.5 km/s in the near infrared. We detected 102 C IV lines in the range: 4.35 < z < 6.2 of which 27 are above z ~ 5. Thanks to the characteristics of resolution and spectral coverage of X-shooter, we could also detect 25 Si IV doublets associated with the C IV at z>5. The column density distribution function of the C IV line sample is observed to evolve in redshift for z>~ 5.3, with respect to the normalization defined by low redshift (1.5 < z <4) C IV lines. This behaviour is reflected in the redshift evolution of the C IV cosmic mass density, Omega_CIV, of lines with column density in the range 13.4 < log N(C IV) < 15, which is consistent with a drop of a factor of ~2 for z>~ 5.3. Considering only the stronger C IV lines (13.8 < log N(CIV) < 15), Omega_CIV gently rises by a factor of ~10 between z ~ 6.2 and z~ 1.5 with a possible flattening toward z ~ 0. The increase is well fitted by a power law: Omega_CIV = (2+-1)x10^{-8} [(1+z)/4]^{-3.1+-0.1}. An insight into the properties of the C IV absorbers and their evolution with redshift is obtained by comparing the observed column densities of associated C IV, Si IV and C II absorptions with the output of a set of CLOUDY photo-ionization models. As already claimed by cosmological simulations, we find that C IV is a good tracer of the metallicity in the low-density intergalacitc medium gas at z ~ 5-6 while at z ~ 3 it arises in gas with over density delta ~100.

Absorption line systems detected in quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of the fine-structure constant, α, measured today on Earth with its value in distant galaxies. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations of α on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of ~ 10 ppm (parts per million). To test these claims we are conducting a Large Program with the VLT UVES . We are obtaining high-resolution (R ~ 60000 and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ~ 100) UVES spectra calibrated specifically for this purpose. Here we analyse the first complete quasar spectrum from this Program, that of HE 2217-2818. We apply the Many Multiplet method to measure α in 5 absorption systems towards this quasar: zabs = 0.7866, 0.9424, 1.5558, 1.6279 and 1.6919. The most precise result is obtained for the absorber at zabs = 1.6919 where 3 Fe II transitions and Al II λ1670 have high S/N and provide a wide range of sensitivities to α. The absorption profile is complex, with several very narrow features, and requires 32 velocity components to be fitted to the data. Our final result for the relative variation in α in this system is Deltaα/α = +1.3 +/- 2.4stat +/- 1.0sys ppm. This is one of the tightest current bounds on α variation from an individual absorber. The absorbers towards quasar HE 2217-2818 reveal no evidence for variation in α at the 3 ppm precision level (1σ confidence). If the recently reported 10 ppm dipolar variation of α across the sky were correct, the expectation at this sky position is (3.2-5.4) +/-1.7 ppm depending on dipole model used . Our constraint of Deltaα/α=+1.3+/-2.4stat +/-1.0sys ppm is not inconsistent with this expectation.

Laser Comb Wavelength calibration shows that the ThAr one is locally unreliable with possible deviations of up to 100 m/s within one order range, while delivering an overall 1 m/s accuracy (Wilken et al 2009). Such deviation corresponds to delta alpha/alpha ~ 7E-6 for a FeII-MgII pair. Comparison of line shifts among the 5 FeII lines, with almost identical sensitivity to fine structure constant changes, offers a clean way to directly test the presence of possible local wavelength calibration errors of whatever origin. We analyzed 5 absorption systems, with zabs ranging from 1.15 to 2.19 towards 3 bright QSOs. The results show that while some lines are aligned within 20 m/s, others reveal large deviations reaching 200 m/s or higher and corresponding to a delta alpha/alpha > 1E-5 level. The origin of these deviations is not clearly identified but could be related to the adaptation of wavelength calibration to CCD manufacturing irregularities. These results suggest that to draw conclusions from delta alpha/alpha analysis based on one or only few lines must be done with extreme care.

High resolution observations of the asteroids Iris and Juno have been performed by means of the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT to obtain the effective accurac y of the spectrograph's radial velocity. The knowledge of this quantity has impo rtant bearings on studies searching for a variability of the fine structure cons tant carried on with this instrument. Asteroids provide a precise radial velocit y reference at the level of 1 m/s which allows instrumental calibration and the recognition of small instrumental drifts and calibration systematics. In particu lar, radial velocity drifts due to non uniform slit illumination and slit optica l misalignment in the two UVES spectrograph arms can be investigated. The positi on of the solar spectrum reflected by the asteroids are compared with the solar wavelength positions or with that of asteroid observations at other epochs or wi th the twilight to asses UVES instrumental accuracy . Radial velocities offsets in the range 10--50 m/s are generally observed likely due to a non uniform slit illumination. However, no radial velocity patterns with wavelength are detected and the two UVES arms provide consistent radial velocities. These results suggest that the detected alpha variability by Levshakov et al. (2007) deduced from a drift of -180 (+/- 85) m/s at z =1.84, between two sets of FeII lines falling in the two UVES arms may be real or induced by other kinds of systematics than those investigated here. The proposed technique allows real time quality check of the spectrograph and should be followed for very accurate measurements.

We have found a relative radial velocity shift between the 1608 A and 2382,2600 A lines of Delta v = -180 +/- 85 m/s (both random and systematic errors are included), which, if real, would correspond to Delta alpha/alpha = (5.4 +/- 2.5) 10^{-6} (1sigma C.L.). Considering the strong implications of a such variability, additional observations with comparable accuracy at redshift z ~ 1.8 are required to confirm this result.

In 5 of these quasars the reddening is detected at ~2 sigma confidence level in two independent color indices of the SDSS ugriz photometric system. A detailed analysis of the data supports an origin of the reddening in the intervening absorbers. We used these rare measurements of extinction in DLA systems to probe the relation between extinction and metal column density in the interval of absorption redshift 0.7 </~ z </~ 2.0. We find that the mean extinction in the V band per atom of iron in the dust is remarkably similar to that found in interstellar clouds of the Milky Way. This result lends support to previous estimates of the dust obscuration effect in DLA systems based on a Milky Way extinction/metal column density relation. We propose a simple mechanism, based on dust grain destruction/accretion properties, which may explain the approximate constancy of the extinction per atom of iron in the dust.

The obtained lower limit 12C/13C > 80 (2sigma C.L.) shows for the first time that the abundance of 13C in the extragalactic intervening clouds is very low. This rules out a significant contribution from intermediate-mass stars to the chemical evolution of matter sampled by this line of sight. The estimated low amount of 13C is in agreement with low abundances of nitrogen observed in damped Ly-alpha systems - the element produced in the same nuclear cycles and from about the same stars as 13C.

The procedure is based on the response surface methodology from the theory of experimental design. The shape of the recovered UV background at z~3 shows a significant intensity decrease between 3 and 4 Ryd compared to the metagalactic spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996). This decrease is interpreted as produced by HeII Gunn-Peterson effect. There are no features indicating a contribution from galaxies to the UV background which is therefore dominated by QSOs at z~3.

We propose a new methodology for probing the cosmological variability of alpha from pairs of FeII lines (SIDAM, single ion differential alpha measurement) observed in individual exposures from a high resolution spectrograph. By this we avoid the influence of the spectral shifts due to (i) ionization inhomogeneities in the absorbers and (ii) non-zero offsets between different exposures. Applied to the FeII lines of the metal absorption line system at zabs = 1.839 in the spectrum of Q1101-264 obtained by means of the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), SIDAM provides da/a = (2.4+/-3.8) 10^{-6}. The zabs = 1.15 FeII system toward HE0515-4414 has been re-analyzed by this method thus obtaining for the combined sample da/a = (0.4+/-1.5) 10^{-6}. These values are shifted with respect to the Keck/HIRES mean da/a = (-5.7+/-1.1) 10^{-6} (Murphy et al. 2004) at very high confidence level (95%). The fundamental photon noise limitation in the da/a measurement with the VLT/UVES is discussed to figure the prospects for future observations. It is suggested that with a spectrograph of 10 times the UVES dispersion coupled to a 100m class telescope the present Oklo level (da/a >= 4.5 10^{-8}) can be achieved along cosmological distances with differential measurements of da/a.

High resolution spectra (R > 40 000) for 9 main sequence turn-off stars and 9 subgiants in the globular cluster NGC 6752 were acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (UT2). These data have been used to determine the abundances of some heavy elements (strontium, yttrium, barium and europium). This paper presents for the first time accurate results for heavy elements in this globular cluster. We did not find any systematic effect between the abundances found in turn-off stars, subgiants, and giants. We obtain the following mean abundances for these elements in our sample (turn-off stars and subgiants): [Sr/Fe] = 0.06 +/- 0.16, [Y/Fe] = -0.01 +/- 0.12, [Ba/Fe] = 0.18 +/- 0.11, and [Eu/Fe] = 0.41 +/- 0.09. The dispersion in the abundance ratios of the different elements is low and can be totally explained by uncertainties in their derivation. These ratios are in agreement with the values found in field halo stars with the same metallicity. We did not observe any correlation between the [n-capture/Fe] ratios and the star-to-star variations of the O and Na abundances. The [Ba/Eu] and [Sr/Ba] ratios show clearly that this globular cluster has also been uniformly enriched by r- and s-process synthesis.

Determination of chemical abundances for elements produced mainly by Type I SNae and intermediate mass stars in high redshift DLAs probes the early chemical build-up on time-scales comparable with their production. Nitrogen shows a peculiar behaviour never detected before in any other class of objects. For [N/H] < -3 there is a plateau with [N/Si]= -1.45(\pm 0.05). We interpret this as empirical evidence for primary N production by massive stars in young systems where AGB stars have not yet had time to make their contribution. The plateau provides the observational integrated yields for N production by massive stars which are theoretically rather uncertain. High N/Si and solar [alpha/iron-peak] ratios are observed at high redshift and place at an earlier epoch the onset of star formation. On the other hand, low N/Si, i.e. young objects, are observed also at relatively low redshifts. These evidences suggest that DLAs started to be formed at a very early epoch but their formation has been extended up to later times.

We present a study of Ar abundances in 15 damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs) in the redshift interval from 2.3 to 3.4. The sample includes 4 new UVES/VLT measurements of Ar I column densities. The majority of DLAs show significant underabundances of Ar relative to other alpha-capture elements with common nucleosynthetic origin. We show that neither dust depletion nor intervening HII regions inside DLAs offer a viable justification to these underabundances. A natural explanation is found in the framework of photoionization models of HI regions embedded in an ionizing continuum with varying spectral distribution. At z ~ 2.5 the observed Ar deficiencies are large, [Ar/alpha] ~ -0.6/-0.8 dex, suggestive of a hard, QSO-dominated spectrum. At z >~ 3 the deficiencies are instead small, suggestive of a soft, stellar-type spectrum, though more data are needed to generalize this high-z result. We argue that the change of Ar abundances is induced by the evolution of the UV metagalactic continuum, in which case the UV emission internal to DLAs must be small (i.e. DLAs should have modest star formation rates) and the external background must become softer at z > 3. The former requirement is consistent with the modest evolution of DLAs abundances and the lack of Ly_alpha and H_alpha emissions associated with DLAs. The latter requirement is consistent with the observed evolution of SiIV/CIV ratios in the IGM, the claims of high escape fraction of UV photons from Ly-break galaxies at z >~ 3, and the recent finding that the HeII re-ionization seems to occur between z ~ 3.4 and z ~ 3. From the comparison with local interstellar studies, we predict a rise of Ar abundances in the redshift range from z ~ 2.3 to z=0, at the epoch at which the metagalactic field of galaxies overcomes that of quasars.

We present 4 new measurements of nitrogen abundances and one upper limit in damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) obtained by means of high resolution (FWHM \~ 7 km/s) UVES/VLT spectra. In addition to these measurements we have compiled data from all DLAs with measurements of nitrogen and alpha-capture elements (O, S or Si) available in the literature, including all HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT data for a total of 33 systems, i.e. the largest sample investigated so far. We find that [N/alpha] ratios are distributed in two groups: 75% of the DLAs show a mean value of [N/alpha] = -0.87 with a scatter of 0.16 dex, while the remaining 25% shows ratios clustered at [N/alpha] = -1.45 with an even lower dispersion of 0.05 dex. The high [N/alpha] plateau is consistent with the one observed in metal-poor HII regions of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies ([N/alpha] = -0.73 +/- 0.13), while the [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values are the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site. These low [N/alpha] ratios are real and not due to ionization effects. They provide a crucial evidence against the primary production of N by massive stars as responsible for the plateau at -0.9/-0.7 dex observed in DLAs and BCD galaxies. The transition between the low-N ([N/alpha] ~ -1.5) and high-N ([N/alpha] ~ -0.9) DLAs occurs at a nitrogen abundance of [N/H] ~ -2.8, suggesting that the separation may result from some peculiarity of the nitrogen enrichment history. The [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values and their low dispersion are consistent with a modest production of primary N in massive stars; however, due to the limited sample, specially for the low-N DLAs, we cannot exclude a primary origin in intermediate mass stars as responsible for the low N abundances observed.

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of the Lyman limit system observed at z = 2.917 in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar HE 0940-1050. Metal absorption lines of carbon and silicon in three ionization stages and numerous atomic hydrogen lines have been analyzed simultaneously. It is found that in order to match the observations, the shape of the ultraviolet background ionizing spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996) should be modified: a spectrum with a higher intensity of the emission feature at 3 Ryd is required. It is also found that synthetic galactic spectra (or different mixtures of them with power law spectra) cannot reproduce the observations, indicating that the stellar contribution to the ionizing background is negligible at z ~= 3. For the first time a very low carbon abundance of [C/H] = -2.93+/-0.13 and the abundance ratio [Si/C] = 0.35+/-0.15 are directly measured in the Lyman limit system with N(H I) = 3.2 10^{17} cm^{-2}. If the absorber at z = 2.917 provides an example of a pristine gas enriched by the nucleosynthetic products of early generations of stars, then the measured value of [Si/C] seems to indicate that the initial mass functions for these stellar populations are constrained to intermediate masses, M_up <= 25M_solar.

We make use of high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 12 turn-off stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 to measure its lithium content. We conclude that they all have the same lithium abundance A(Li) = 2.34 with a standard deviation of 0.056 dex. We use this result, together with Monte Carlo simulations, to estimate that the maximum allowed intrinsic scatter is of the order of 0.035 dex. This is a new stringent constraint to be fulfilled by stellar models which predict Li depletion. We argue that although a mild depletion of 0.1 -- 0.2 dex, as predicted by recent models, cannot be ruled out, there is no compelling reason for it. This fact, together with the good agreement with the Li abundance observed in field stars, supports the primordial origin of lithium in metal-poor stars. Taking the above value as the primordial lithium abundance implies a cosmic baryonic density which is either Omega_b h^2 = 0.016 +/- 0.004 or Omega_b h^2 = 0.005 ^{+0.0026}_{-0.0006}, from the predictions of standard big bang nucleosynthesis. The high baryonic density solution is in agreement with recent results on the primordial abundance of deuterium and 3He and on the estimates derived from the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background.

The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we found that an assumption of a homogeneous metal content and a unique photoionizing background is sufficient to describe the observed complex metal profiles. It was also found that the linear size L and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v measured within the absorbers obey a scaling relation, namely, sigma_v increases with increasing L, and that metal abundance is inversely proportional to the linear size of the system: the highest metallicity was measured in the system with the smallest L.

We analyze extant data of Al++, Al+ and other low ions with the aim of studying the ionization properties of Damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs) from the analysis of the ratio R(Al++/Al+) = N(Al++)/N(Al+). We find good correlations logN(Al+)-logN(Si+) and logN(Al+)-logN(Fe+) that we use to indirectly estimate N(Al+) from N(Si+) and/or N(Fe+) measurements. In this way we determine the ratio R(Al++/Al+) for a sample of 20 DLAs. Contrary to common belief, the ratio can attain relatively high values (up to 0.6), suggesting that gas of intermediate ionization state plays an important role in DLAs. On the other hand, the lack of any trend between abundance ratios, such as Si/H and Si/Fe, and R(Al++/Al+) indicates that abundances are not severely influenced by ionization effects. We find a logR(Al++/Al+) - logN(H I) anticorrelation that we use, in conjunction with idealized photoionization equilibrium calculations, to constrain the ionization properties and to predict ionization corrections in DLAs. We consider two possible origins for the species of low and intermediate ionization state: (1) neutral regions devoid of Al++ and/or (2) partially ionized, (Al++)-bearing regions. The logR(Al++/Al+) - logN(H I) anticorrelation can be naturally explained in terms of a two-region model with a soft, stellar-type ionizing radiation field. We present abundance ionization corrections for 14 elements of astrophysical interest derived with different types of ionizing spectra. For most of these elements the corrections are generally below measurements errors, contrary to the predictions of recent models presented in the literature. We briefly discuss the potential effects of inaccuracies of the Al recombination rates used in the photoionization calculations.

By using UV spectra for the O star HD 93521 taken with the ORFEUS II echelle spectrograph, we determine an ``astrophysical'' f value for the SII 94.7 nm line: f = 0.00498 (+0.00172)(-0.00138), error at 1 sigma level. This is almost a factor of 30 smaller than the guessed value found in the Kurucz database (f=0.1472), which was up to now the only one available for this transition. We use our ``astrophysical'' f to investigate the S abundance in two Damped Ly-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) observed with UVES at the ESO 8.2m Kueyen telescope. In the case of the absorber at zabs=3.02486 towards QSO 0347-3819 we find a sulphur column density which is consistent, within errors, with that determined by Centurion et al by means of the 125.9 nm line, thus providing an external check on the accuracy of our f value. For the damped absorber at zabs=4.4680 towards BR J0307-4945 we determine a high value of the S abundance, which, however, is probably the result of blending with Ly-alpha forest lines.

In both clusters the [Fe/H] obtained for TO-stars agree perfectly (within a few per cents) with that obtained for stars at the base of the RGB. The [O/Fe]=0.21+/-0.05 value we obtain for NGC6397 is quite low, but it agrees with previous results obtained for giants in this cluster; also, the star-to-star scatter in both O and Fe is very small, indicating that this small mass cluster is chemically very homogenous. On the other side, our results show clearly and for the first time that the O-Na anticorrelation (up to now seen only for stars on the red giant branches of globular clusters) is present among unevolved stars in the globular cluster NGC6752, a more massive cluster than NGC6397. A similar anticorrelation is present also for Mg and Al, and C and N. It is very difficult to explain the observed Na-O, and Mg-Al anticorrelation in NGC6752 stars by a deep mixing scenario; we think it requires some non internal mechanism.

The combination of N(J=1) with the limits available for other low rotational levels restricts the excitation temperature T_ex in the range (290-540) K. This gives the total H2 column density of N(H2) = (8.75 +/- 1.25) 10^{13} cm^{-2} and the corresponding fraction of hydrogen atoms bound in molecules of f(H2) = (6.8 +/- 2.0) 10^{-8}.

The UV resonance transitions of neutral argon ArI 1066 A, and of singly ionized phosphorus PII 963 A, originated in the damped Ly_alpha system (DLA) at zabs = 3.3901 towards QSO 0000--2620 have been detected by means of the UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m ESO KUEYEN telescope. So far, this is the first measurement of ArI, and the second of PII, ever performed in damped galaxies and in high redshift objects. This DLA is well known for having one of the lowest metal abundances and dust content, and the lowest fractional abundance of molecular hydrogen H_2. The measured Ar abundance is [Ar/H] = - 1.91 (+/- 0.09) which is equal to the abundances of the other alpha-chain elements (O, S and Si). The similarity of the Ar abundance with the other alpha-chain elements implies the absence of significant photoionization by either UV background or stellar sources along the sightline throughout the damped Ly_alpha system. Both log(Ar/O) and log(Ar/S) ratios are found close to those measured in the extragalactic HII regions and in blue compact galaxies where O is more abundant by at least one order of magnitude. This strengthens the universality of the Ar/O and Ar/S ratios and lends support to the existence of a universal IMF. The abundance of the non-refractory element phosphorus [P/H] = - 2.31 (+/- 0.10) confirms the low amount of chemical evolution in the DLA. This is the measurement of P in the most metal-poor material and shows a subsolar [P/Fe] = --0.27 value. The measured ratios [P/Si] = - 0.40 (+/- 0.13) and [P/S] = - 0.33 (+/- 0.13) provide evidence for a mild odd-even effect. Finally, a stringent upper limit to the population of the 3P_1 level in the ground state of OI is derived, which provides a lower limit to the physical dimensions of the zabs = 3.3901 system of L > 7 pc.

The measured H2 fractional abundance of f(H2) ~= 4*10^{-8} is lower than a typical value for Galactic interstellar clouds of high N(HI) column density by a factor of (2-3)*10^6. Since H2 molecules are formed efficiently on dust grains, it implies that the dust condensation in this DLA is negligible, and hence the abundances derived from metal absorption lines are the actual ones. The obtained f(H2) value leads to an estimate of the dust number density of < n_d >_DLA ~= 10^{-3}*< n_d >_ISM, which is consistent with the dust-to-gas ratio k <= 1.6 10^{-3} derived independently from the [Cr/Zn] and [Fe/Zn] ratios.

Zinc is a good indicator of metallicity in Damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems because it is almost unaffected by dust depletion. However, the use of zinc as a tracer of metallicity evolution has been hampered by the difficulty of detecting the Zn II resonance lines at high redshift. The measurement of zinc abundance in a DLA system at z_abs > 3 obtained by means of the UVES spectrograph at the VLT prompted us to re-analyse the full sample of zinc abundances present in the literature to search for a metallicity-redshift relation in DLA systems. The study of the metallicities of individual systems shows evidence for an anti-correlation between [Zn/H] and redshift supported by different types of statistical tools. The zinc metallicity decreases by -0.3 +/- 0.1 dex per unit redshift interval in the range 0.5 <~ z_abs <~ 3.5. This rate is in good agreement with that found by Savaglio, Panagia & Stiavelli (2000) in their recent study of DLA abundances corrected for dust depletion. The present result does not require a knowledge of the dust depletion pattern(s) in DLA systems. On the other hand, the analysis of the column-density weighted metallicity of the sample, <Z>, does not show a clear evidence for redshift evolution, consistent with previous studies of zinc abundances. We propose that the apparent lack of evolution of <Z> is due to the combination of selection bias effects together with the extreme sensitivity of <Z> to low-number statistics.

Observations of the QSO 0000-2620 with UVES spectrograph at the 8.2m ESO KUEYEN telescope are used for abundance analysis of the damped Ly-alpha system at z_{abs}=3.3901. Several Oxygen lines are identified in the Ly_alpha forest and a measure for the oxygen abundance is obtained at [O/H]=-1.85 +/- 0.1 by means of the unsaturated OI 925 A and OI 950 A lines. This represents the most accurate O measurement in a damped Ly_alpha galaxy so far. We have also detected ZnII 2026 A and CrII 2056, 2062 A redshifted at about 8900 A and found abundances [Zn/H] = -2.07 +/- 0.1 and [Cr/H]=-1.99 +/- 0.1. Furthermore, previous measurements of Fe, Si, Ni and N have been refined yielding [Fe/H]=-2.04 +/- 0.1, [Si/H]=-1.90 +/- 0.1, [Ni/H]=-2.27 +/- 0.1, and [N/H]=-2.68 +/- 0.1. The abundance of the non-refractory element zinc is the lowest among the damped Ly-alpha systems showing that the associated intervening galaxy is indeed in the early stages of its chemical evolution. The fact that the Zn abundance is identical to that of the refractory elements Fe and Cr suggests that dust grains have not formed yet. In this Damped Ly-alpha system the observed [O,S,Si/Zn,Fe,Cr] ratios, in whatever combination are taken, are close to solar (i.e 0.1-0.2 dex) and do not show the [alpha-element/Fe] enhancement observed in Milky Way stars of comparable metallicity. The observed behavior supports a galaxy evolution model characterized by either episodic or low star formation rate rather than a Milky-Way-type evolutionary model.

Relative elemental abundances, and in particular the alpha/Fe ratio, are an important diagnostic tool of the chemical evolution of damped Ly alpha systems (DLAs). The S/Zn ratio is not affected by differential dust depletion and is an excellent estimator of the alpha/Fe ratio. We report 6 new determinations of sulphur abundance in DLAs at zabs greater than or equal to 2 with already known zinc abundances. The combination with extant data from the literature provides a measure of the S/Zn abundance ratio for a total of 11 high redshift DLA systems. The observed [S/Zn] ratios do not show the characteristic [alpha/Fe] enhancement observed in metal-poor stars of the Milky Way at comparable level of metallicity ([Zn/H] ~ -1). The behaviour of DLAs data is consistent with a general trend of decreasing [S/Zn] ratio with increasing metallicity [Zn/H]. This would be the first evidence of the expected decrease of the alpha/Fe ratio in the course of chemical evolution of DLA systems. However, in contrast to what observed in our Galaxy, the alpha/iron-peak ratio seems to attain solar values when the metallicity is still low ([Zn/H] < -1) and to decrease below solar values at higher metallicities. The behaviour of the alpha/Fe ratio challenges the frequently adopted hypothesis that high redshift DLAs are progenitors of spiral galaxies and favours instead an origin in galaxies characterized by low star formation rates, in agreement with the results from imaging studies of low redshift DLAs, where the candidate DLA galaxies show a variety of morphological types including dwarfs and LSBs and only a minority of spirals.

A high-resolution, high signal-to-noise HIRES-Keck spectrum of APM 08279+5255 reveals a feature in the HI Ly alpha profile of the zabs=3.514 absorber at the expected position of the corresponding DI Lyalpha line. The absorber shows a relatively simple velocity structure, with a major component detected in several metallic lines including CII, CIV, SiII, SiIII and Si IV. Modeling of the hydrogen column density with the minimum number of components yields D/H ~ 1.5 x 10E-5. However, a more complex structure for the hydrogen cloud with somewhat ad hoc components would allow a higher D/H. The system has a very low metallicity with [Si/H] ~ -3.5 and [C/H] ~ -4.0 and is therefore representative of essentially unprocessed material, with a deuterium abundance close to the primordial value. The present analysis favours the low value of D/H =3.39(+/-0.25) x 10E-5 measured towards QSO 1009+2956 and QSO 1937-1009 (Burles & Tytler 1998a, 1998b) as the fiducial value of deuterium at high redshift.

High resolution spectra of 5 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars suggested by Beers & Sommer-Larsen (1995) are analyzed to determine their chemical abundances. The low abundance of all the objects has been confirmed with metallicity reaching [Fe/H]=-2.9. However, for three objects, the astrometric data from the Hipparcos catalogue suggests they are true halo members. The remaining two, for which proper-motion data are not available, may have disc-like kinematics. It is therefore clear that it is useful to address properties of putative metal-weak thick-disc stars only if they possess full kinematic data. For CS 22894-19 the abundance pattern similar to those of typical halo stars is found, suggesting that chemical composition is not a useful discriminant between thick-disc and halo stars. CS 29529-12 is found to be C enhanced with [C/Fe]=+1.0; other chemical peculiarities involve the s process elements: [Sr/Fe]=-0.65 and [Ba/Fe]=+0.62, leading to a high [Ba/Sr] considerably larger than what is found in more metal-rich carbon-rich stars, but similar to LP 706-7 and LP 625-44 discussed by Norris et al (1997a). Hipparcos data have been used to calculate the space velocities of 25 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars, thus allowing us to identify 3 bona fide members, which support the existence of a metal-poor tail of the thick-disc, at variance with a claim to the contrary by Ryan & Lambert (1995).

The behaviour of nitrogen relative to iron-peak and alpha-elements has been investigated by considering all the extant NI determinations for a total of 9 DLA galaxies. We have estimated the fraction of iron locked into dust grains to convert the observed [N/Fe] ratios into overall (dust plus gas) relative abundances, [N/Fe]corr. The ratios [N/alpha] have been mostly determined by using sulphur as a tracer of alpha-elements which is unaffected by dust. The [N/Fe] and [N/alpha] ratios show high dispersions, of one order of magnitude or more, which have no equivalent in other element-to-element ratios in DLAs. The lowest values of the [N/Fe]corr and [N/alpha] ratios are at variance with the values measured in Galactic halo stars of similar metallicity suggesting that part of the DLA galaxies do not follow the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. The DLA nitrogen abundances and their dispersion show some similarities with those observed in dwarf galaxies. The behaviour of nitrogen abundance ratios can be ascribed, in general to the delayed release of nitrogen in the course of evolution. However it is difficult to conciliate this interpretation with the lowest [N/alpha] values measured, since an expected enhancement of alpha-elements respect to the iron-peak elements is not observed simultaneously in these DLA galaxies. In two cases, relatively high [N/alpha] values are observed which require also a more complex chemical evolution to be explained.

The light curve after the maximum follows a decline that can be fitted with a power law with exponent $α$ = --1.141 $\pm$ 0.014. Deviations from a smooth power law decay are moderate (r.m.s. = 0.15 magnitude). We find no flattening of the light curve at late times. The optical afterglow fluence is a significant fraction, $\sim$ 5%, of the GRB fluence. The optical energy distribution can be well represented by a power law, the slope of which changed at the time of the maximum (the spectrum became redder).

Measurements of absorption lines lead to accurate abundance determinations of Fe, S and N which complement measurements of Zn, Cr and Ni already available for this system. We find [Fe/H]= -2.0 (+/-0.1), [S/H]= -1.54 (+/-0.06) and [N/H]=-2.76 (+/-0.07). The ratio [Fe/Zn]=-0.44 provides evidence that about 74% of iron and about 28% of zinc are locked into dust grains with a dust-to-gas ratio of about 3% of the Galactic one. The total iron content in both gas and dust in the DLA system is [Fe/H]=-1.4. This confirms a rather low metallicity in the galaxy, which is in the early stages of its chemical evolution. The detection of SII allows us to measure the SII/ZnII ratio, which is a unique diagnostic tool for tracing back its chemical history, since it is not affected by the presence of dust. Surprisingly, the resulting relative abundance is [S/Zn]=0.0 (+/-0.1), at variance with the overabundance found in the Galactic halo stars with similar metallicity. We emphasize that the [S/Zn] ratio is solar in all the three DLA absorbers with extant data. Upper limits are also found for Mn, Mg, O and P and, once the dust depletion is accounted for, we obtain [Mg/Fe]_{c} <+0.2, [O/Fe]_{c}< 0.4, [Mn/Fe]_{c}<+0.0 and [P/Fe]_{c}<-0.7. The [alpha/Fe] values do not support a Galactic halo-like abundances implying that the chemical evolution of this young galaxy is not reproducing our own Galaxy's evolution.

At the absorber redshift we detect lines of the low ionization species MgI, MgII, CaII, TiII, MnII, and FeII. The column densities of these species are typical of the interstellar gas in the disk of the Galaxy. By assuming dust-free gas with solar abundances we infer N(HI) > 2.5 x 10^19 cm^-2. The high value of this conservative lower limit indicates that the absorber is a Damped Ly alpha system. We find [Ti/Fe] = +0.3, in agreement with [Ti/Fe] measurements in DLA absorbers, but [Mn/Fe] = +0.4, at variance with the values [Mn/Fe]<0 common to DLA systems. The measured [Ti/Fe] and [Mn/Fe] ratios match remarkably well the differential depletion pattern of low-density interstellar clouds in the Galaxy. Unlike high-redshift DLA systems (z>2), the z=0.558 absorber seems to originate in a galaxy that has already attained the abundances and dust content of present-day disk galaxies. The analysis of our imaging data lends support to the presence of an intervening galaxy. After careful subtraction of the BL Lac image, an object at 1.6 arcsec from PKS 0118-272 is detected. At the absorber redshift the projected distance (14 h_50^-1 kpc) and the absolute magnitude (M_R ~ -22.3) of this companion are consistent with those found for galaxies associated with low-redshift DLA systems.

Abstract:
We present spectroscopic observations of supernova 1994D in NGC 4526, an S0$_3$ galaxy in the Virgo cluster 15 Mpc distant. The datasets consist of the interstellar Ca\II\ and Na\I\ lines towards the supernova at high spectral resolution (FWHM 6 \kms), \halpha\ and [N\,II] observations at lower resolution (FWHM 33 \kms) of the nucleus of NGC 4526 and the supernova, obtained with the WHT at La Pa…

We present spectroscopic observations of supernova 1994D in NGC 4526, an S0$_3$ galaxy in the Virgo cluster 15 Mpc distant. The datasets consist of the interstellar Ca\II\ and Na\I\ lines towards the supernova at high spectral resolution (FWHM 6 \kms), \halpha\ and [N\,II] observations at lower resolution (FWHM 33 \kms) of the nucleus of NGC 4526 and the supernova, obtained with the WHT at La Palma, and 21 cm spectra obtained with the 100 m Effelsberg Radiotelescope in the field of NGC 4526.
The velocity of the gas in NGC 4526 determined from our \halpha\ spectra is +625 \kms\ at the centre and +880 \kms\ at the supernova position. Our value of the systemic velocity is higher than the previous value of +450 \kms.
In our high resolution spectra we detect Ca\II\ and Na\I\ absorption at +714 \kms\ which is produced in interstellar gas in NGC 4526. To our knowledge this is the first detection of interstellar absorption originating in a galaxy of early morphological type. We detect multi-component
Ca\II\ and Na\I\ absorption lines in the range from +204 to +254 \kms\ which originate in a complex of High Velocity Clouds (HVCs) located at a distance $\ll$ 1 Mpc, in the surroundings of the Milky Way. The gas appears to have near solar abundances, low dust content, and a diluted UV radiation field. At $-$29 \kms, we find weak Ca\II\ absorption and weak H\I\ emission. This component may originate in gas infalling onto the Galactic disk. Finally, close to rest velocity, we find both warm and cold gas located beyond 65 pc, probably associated with high latitude gas at the border of Loop I. The total reddening of the supernova, estimated using the standard Milky Way gas-to-dust ratio, is $E$(B$-$V) $\simeq$ 0.05.
