Neutron star cooling and mass distributions
Abstract: We study the cooling of isolated neutron stars, employing different nuclear equations of state with or without active direct Urca process, and investigate the interplay with the nuclear pairing gaps. We find that a consistent description of all current cooling data requires fast direct Urca cooling and reasonable proton 1S0 gaps, but no neutron 3P2 pairing. We then deduce the neutron star mass dis… ▽ More

Cooling of hybrid neutron stars with microscopic equations of state
Abstract: We model the cooling of hybrid neutron stars combining a microscopic nuclear equation of state in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with different quark models. We then analyze the neutron star cooling curves predicted by the different models and single out the preferred ones. A microscopic equation of state for protoneutron stars
Abstract: We study the structure of protoneutron stars within the finite temperature Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone many-body theory. If nucleons, hyperons, and leptons are present in the stellar core, we find that neutrino trapping stiffens considerably the equation of state, because hyperon onsets are shifted to larger baryon density. However, the value of the critical mass turns out to be smaller than the `… ▽ More

Microscopic three-body forces and kaon condensation in cold neutrino-trapped matter
Abstract: We investigate the composition and the equation of state of the kaon condensed phase in neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped star matter within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with three-body forces. We find that neutrino trapping shifts the onset density of kaon condensation to a larger baryon density, and reduces considerably the kaon abundance. As a consequence, when kaons… ▽ More

Production of high-energy μneutrinos from young neutron stars
Abstract: Young, rapidly rotating neutron stars could accelerate protons to energies of $\sim 1$ PeV close to the stellar surface, which scatter with x-rays from the stellar surface through the $Δ$ resonance and produce pions. The pions subsequently decay to produce muon neutrinos. We find that the energy spectrum of muon neutrinos consists of a sharp rise at $\sim 50$ TeV, corresponding to the onset of t… ▽ More

Hybrid protoneutron stars with the MIT bag model
Abstract: We study the hadron-quark phase transition in the interior of protoneutron stars. For the hadronic sector, we use a microscopic equation of state involving nucleons and hyperons derived within the finite-temperature Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone many-body theory, with realistic two-body and three-body forces. For the description of quark matter, we employ the MIT bag model both with a constant and a… ▽ More

Quark matter in neutron stars within the Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model and confinement
Abstract: The quark matter equation of state (EOS) derived from the standard Nambu - Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is soft enough to render neutron stars (NS) unstable at the onset of the deconfined phase, and no pure quark matter can be actually present in its interior. Since this is a peculiarity of the NJL model, we have studied a modified NJL model with a momentum cut-off which depends on the density. This… ▽ More

Protoneutron stars within the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theory
Abstract: We study the structure of newly born neutron stars (protoneutron stars) within the finite temperature Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone theoretical approach including also hyperons. We find that for purely nucleonic stars both finite temperature and neutrino trapping reduce the value of the maximum mass. For hyperonic stars the effect is reversed, because neutrino trapping shifts the appearance of hyper… ▽ More

Detecting high-energy neutrinos from microquasars with the ANTARES telescope
Abstract: The ANTARES project aims at the construction of a neutrino telescope 2500 m below the surface of the Mediterranean sea, close to the southern French coast. The apparatus will consist of a 3D array of photomultiplier tubes, which detects the Cherenkov light emitted by upward going neutrino-induced muons. High-energy neutrinos may be produced in powerful cosmic accelerators, such as, gamma-ray bur… ▽ More
