We present results of polarimetric, photometric, and spectral observations of the near-Earth asteroid (3200) Phaethon carried out at the 6-m BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory and the 2.6-m and 1.25-m telescopes of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory over a wide range of phase angles during its close approach to the Earth at the end of 2017 (19-135 deg) and in 2020 at α= 52.2 deg. Using our and other available in literature data, we found that the maximum degree of linear polarization of Phaethon in the V band is 45% at the phase angle 124 deg. Using the dependence (polarimetric slope-albedo) we have found the geometric albedo of asteroid Phaethon to be 0.06. This value falls into the lower range of albedo values for asteroids determined by different methods. The mean color indices U-B=0.207 and B-V=0.639 of the asteroid are derived at heliocentric and geocentric distances 1.077 au and 0.102 au, respectively. The effective diameter of Phaethon is estimated from obtained absolute magnitude and geometrical albedo, it is equal to 6.8 km. The best fit to the observed polarimetric data was obtained with the Sh-matrix model of conjugated random Gaussian particles composed of Mg-rich silicate (90%) and amorphous carbon (10%).

How a black hole accretes matter and how this process is regulated are fundamental but unsolved questions in astrophysics. In transient black-hole binaries, a lot of mass stored in an accretion disk is suddenly drained to the central black hole because of thermal-viscous instability. This phenomenon is called an outburst and is observable at various wavelengths (Frank et al., 2002). During the outburst, the accretion structure in the vicinity of a black hole shows dramatical transitions from a geometrically-thick hot accretion flow to a geometrically-thin disk, and the transition is observed at X-ray wavelengths (Remillard, McClintock, 2006; Done et al., 2007). However, how that X-ray transition occurs remains a major unsolved problem (Dunn et al., 2008). Here we report extensive optical photometry during the 2018 outburst of ASASSN-18ey (MAXI J1820$+$070), a black-hole binary at a distance of 3.06 kpc (Tucker et al., 2018; Torres et al., 2019) containing a black hole and a donor star of less than one solar mass. We found optical large-amplitude periodic variations similar to superhumps which are well observed in a subclass of white-dwarf binaries (Kato et al., 2009). In addition, the start of the stage transition of the optical variations was observed 5 days earlier than the X-ray transition. This is naturally explained on the basis of our knowledge regarding white dwarf binaries as follows: propagation of the eccentricity inward in the disk makes an increase of the accretion rate in the outer disk, resulting in huge mass accretion to the black hole. Moreover, we provide the dynamical estimate of the binary mass ratio by using the optical periodic variations for the first time in transient black-hole binaries. This paper opens a new window to measure black-hole masses accurately by systematic optical time-series observations which can be performed even by amateur observers.

NY Her: possible discovery of negative superhumps

Abstract:
We presents result of CDD photometry for SU UMa dwarf nova NY Her during 6 nights in June 2017 when object was in quiescence. Light curves clearly show strong amplitude variations in a range of 0m.7-1m.1. Time series analysis revealed a period 0.07141(5) d, that we identified as the period of possible negative superhumps of NY Her.

The types of instability in the interacting binary stars are reviewed. The project "Inter-Longitude Astronomy" is a series of smaller projects on concrete stars or groups of stars. It has no special funds, and is supported from resources and grants of participating organizations, when informal working groups are created. Totally we studied 1900+ variable stars of different types. The characteristic timescale is from seconds to decades and (extrapolating) even more. The monitoring of the first star of our sample AM Her was initiated by Prof. V.P. Tsesevich (1907-1983). Since more than 358 ADS papers were published. Some highlights of our photometric and photo-polarimetric monitoring and mathematical modelling of interacting binary stars of different types are presented: classical, asynchronous, intermediate polars and magnetic dwarf novae (DO Dra) with 25 timescales corresponding to different physical mechanisms and their combinations (part "Polar"); negative and positive superhumpers in nova-like and many dwarf novae stars ("Superhumper"); eclipsing "non-magnetic" cataclysmic variables; symbiotic systems ("Symbiosis"); super-soft sources (SSS, QR And); spotted (and not spotted) eclipsing variables with (and without) evidence for a current mass transfer ("Eclipser") with a special emphasis on systems with a direct impact of the stream into the gainer star's atmosphere, or V361 Lyr-type stars. Other parts of the ILA project are "Stellar Bell" (interesting pulsating variables of different types and periods - M, SR, RV Tau, RR Lyr, Delta Sct) and "Novice"(="New Variable") discoveries and classification with a subsequent monitoring for searching and studying possible multiple components of variability. Special mathematical methods have been developed to create a set of complementary software for statistically optimal modelling of variable stars of different types.

We present results of a multi-site photometric campaign on the high-amplitude $δ$\,Scuti star KIC\,6382916 in the {\it Kepler} field. The star was observed over a 85-d interval at five different sites in North America and Europe during 2011. {\it Kepler} photometry and ground-based multicolour light curves of KIC\,6382916 are used to investigate the pulsational content and to identify the principal modes. High-dispersion spectroscopy was also obtained in order to derive the stellar parameters and projected rotational velocity. From an analysis of the {\it Kepler} time series, three independent frequencies and a few hundred combination frequencies are found. The light curve is dominated by two modes with frequencies $f_{1}$= 4.9107 and $f_{2}$= 6.4314\,d$^{-1}$. The third mode with $f_{3}$= 8.0350\,d$^{-1}$ has a much lower amplitude. We attempt mode identification by examining the amplitude ratios and phase differences in different wavebands from multicolour photometry and comparing them to calculations for different spherical harmonic degree, $l$. We find that the theoretical models for $f_1$ and $f_2$ are in a best agreement with the observations and lead to value of l = 1 modes, but the mode identification of $f_3$ is uncertain due to its low amplitude. Non-adiabatic pulsation models show that frequencies below 6\,d$^{-1}$ are stable, which means that the low frequency of $f_1$ cannot be reproduced. This is further confirmation that current models predict a narrower pulsation frequency range than actually observed.

This system is very similar to V361 Lyr, which was assumed to be unique. We confirmed a strong asymmetry of the phase curve and found the wavelength dependence of the amplitude. We report the detection of a faint optical flash by the 2-m Faulkes Telescope North simultaneously with the second of two prompt gamma-ray pulses in INTEGRAL gamma-ray burst (GRB) 080603A, beginning at t_rest = 37 s after the onset of the GRB. This optical flash appears to be distinct from the subsequent emerging afterglow emission, for which we present comprehensive broadband radio to X-ray light curves to 13 days post-burst and rigorously test the standard fireball model. The intrinsic extinction toward GRB 080603A is high (A_V,z = 0.8 mag), and the well-sampled X-ray-to-near-infrared spectral energy distribution is interesting in requiring an LMC2 extinction profile, in contrast to the majority of GRBs. Comparison of the gamma-ray and extinction-corrected optical flux densities of the flash rules out an inverse-Compton origin for the prompt gamma-rays; instead, we suggest that the optical flash could originate from the inhomogeneity of the relativistic flow. In this scenario, a large velocity irregularity in the flow produces the prompt gamma-rays, followed by a milder internal shock at a larger radius that would cause the optical flash. Flat gamma-ray spectra, roughly F propto nu^-0.1, are observed in many GRBs. If the flat spectrum extends down to the optical band in GRB 080603A, the optical flare could be explained as the low-energy tail of the gamma-ray emission. If this is indeed the case, it provides an important clue to understanding the nature of the emission process in the prompt phase of GRBs and highlights the importance of deep (R> 20 mag), rapid follow-up observations capable of detecting faint, prompt optical emission.

Results of a multi-color study of the variability of the magnetic cataclysmic variable BY Cam are presented. The observations were obtained at the Korean 1.8m and Ukrainian 2.6m, 1.2m and 38-cm telescopes in 2003-2005, 56 observational runs cover 189 hours. The variations of the mean brightness in different colors are correlated with a slope dR/dV=1.29(4), where the number in brackets denotes the error estimates in the last digits. For individual runs, this slope is much smaller ranging from 0.98(3) to 1.24(3), with a mean value of 1.11(1). Near the maximum, the slope becomes smaller for some nights, indicating more blue spectral energy distribution, whereas the night-to-night variability has an infrared character. For the simultaneous UBVRI photometry, the slopes increase with wavelength from dU/dR=0.23(1) to dI/dR=1.18(1). Such wavelength dependence is opposite to that observed in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables, in an agreement to the model of cyclotron emission. The principal component analysis shows two (with a third at the limit of detection) components of variablitity with different spectral energy distribution, which possibly correspond to different regions of emission. The scalegram analysis shows a highest peak corresponding to the 200-min spin variability, its quarter and to the 30-min and 8-min QPOs. The amplitudes of all these components are dependent on wavelength and luminosity state. The light curves were fitted by a statistically optimal trigonometrical polynomial (up to 4-th order) to take into account a 4-hump structure. The dependences of these parameters on the phase of the beat period and on mean brightness are discussed. The amplitude of spin variations increases with an increasing wavelength and with decreasing brightness
