Natural inflation, strong dynamics, and the role of generalized anomalies

Abstract:
We revisit models of natural inflation and show that the single-field effective theory described by the potential $V(a)\sim \cos\frac{a}{f}$ breaks down as the inflaton $a$ makes large-field excursions, even for values of $f$ smaller than the Planck scale. In order to remedy the problem, we modify the potential in order to account for the heavy degrees of freedom (hadrons) that become intertwined…

We revisit models of natural inflation and show that the single-field effective theory described by the potential $V(a)\sim \cos\frac{a}{f}$ breaks down as the inflaton $a$ makes large-field excursions, even for values of $f$ smaller than the Planck scale. In order to remedy the problem, we modify the potential in order to account for the heavy degrees of freedom (hadrons) that become intertwined with the light inflaton as the latter rolls down its potential. By embedding the low energy degrees of freedom into an ultraviolet complete gauge theory, we argue that the intertwining between the two scales can be explained as the result of a generalized mixed 't Hooft anomaly between the discrete chiral symmetry and background fractional fluxes in the baryon number, color, and flavor directions. Further, we study the multi-field inflation and show that it entertains rich dynamics. Inflating near the hilltop excites the hadrons and spoils the slow-roll parameters, in contradistinction with the expectations in the single-field inflation. Nevertheless, we identify a safe zone where inflation can proceed successfully. We determine the conditions under which the Universe inflates by at least $60$ e-foldings and inflation leads to a power spectrum and tensor to scalar ratio that are consistent with the Cosmic Microwave Background data.

Large-scale messengers from arbitrary spin fields

Abstract:
We show that nonperturbative production of arbitrary spin fields from vacuum will accompany the generation of non-vanishing macroscopic energy-momentum tensor correlators. This argument is based on the general causal field formalism, which gives a manifestly covariant description of higher spin particles without any reference to gauge redundancy. Our findings are direct consequence of the Poincaré covariance and anlayticity of the Green's functions and independent of any detailed particle physics model. Further, we discuss the idea that any mechanism causing imbalance between the on-shell production of left- and right-handed fields leads to a helical structure in the energy momentum correlators and violation of the macroscopic parity symmetry. We check our method for fields with spin $\frac{1}{2}$ and show that it correctly reproduces previous results. However, the formalism suffers from pathologies related to non-localities that appear for massless particles with spin $\geq 1$ in flat space. We discuss the origin of these pathologies and the relevance of our findings to cosmology.

We report on a new mechanism that leads to the generation of primordial chiral gravitational waves, and hence, the violation of the parity symmetry in the Universe. We show that nonperturbative production of fermions with a definite helicity is accompanied by the generation of chiral gravitational waves. This is a generic and model-independent phenomenon that can occur during inflation, reheating and radiation eras, and can leave imprints in the cosmic microwave background polarization and may be observed in future ground- and space-based interferometers. We also discuss a specific model where chiral gravitational waves are generated via the production of light chiral fermions during pseudoscalar inflation.

We find that most of the parameter space of pseudoscalar inflation that explains the cosmological data leads to baryon overproduction, hence the models of natural inflation are severely constrained. We also point out a connection between the baryon number and topology of the relic magnetic fields. Both the magnitude and sign of magnetic helicity can be detected in future diffuse gamma ray data. This will be a smoking gun evidence for a link between inflation and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

In arXiv:0908.4089, we have proposed a model where natural inflation is realized on a steep potential as a consequence of the interaction of the inflaton with gauge fields through an axion-like coupling. In the present work we study the nongaussianities and the spectrum of tensor modes generated in this scenario. The nongaussianities turn out to be compatible with current observations and can be large enough to be detectable by Planck. The non-observation of tensor modes imposes new constraints on the parameter space of the system that are about one order of magnitude stronger than those found in our previous work. More importantly, in certain regions of the parameter space tensor modes might be detected by upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background experiments even if inflation occurs at energies as low as the TeV scale. In this case the tensor modes would be chiral, and would lead to distinctive parity-violating correlation functions in the CMB.

Naturally inflating on steep potentials through electromagnetic dissipation

Abstract:
In models of natural inflation, the inflaton is an axion-like particle. Unfortunately, axion potentials in UV-complete theories appear to be too steep to drive inflation. We show that, even for a steep potential, natural inflation can occur if the coupling between axion and gauge fields is taken into account. We show that, even for a steep potential, natural inflation can occur if the coupling between axion and gauge fields is taken into account. Due to this coupling, quanta of the gauge field are produced by the rolling of the axion. If the coupling is large enough, such a dissipative effect slows down the axion, leading to inflation even for a steep potential. The spectrum of perturbations is quasi-scale invariant, but in the simplest construction its amplitude is larger than $10^{-5}$. We discuss a possible way out of this problem.

We study the quantum-mechanical corrections to two point particles accelerated by a strut in a 2+1 D flat background. Since the particles are accelerating, we use finite temperature techniques to compute the Green's function of a conformally coupled scalar applying transparent and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the location of the strut. We find that the induced energy-momentum tensor diverges at the position of the strut unless we impose transparent boundary conditions. Further, we use the regular form of the induced energy-momentum tensor to calculate the gravitational backreaction on the original space. The resulting metric is a constant $φ$ section of the 4-dimensional C-metric, and it describes two black holes corrected by weakly coupled CFT and accelerating in asymptotically flat spacetime. Interestingly enough, the same form of the metric was obtained before in 0803.2242 by cutting the AdS C-metric with angular dependent critical 2-brane. According to AdS/CFT+gravity conjecture, the latter should describe strongly coupled CFT black holes accelerating on the brane. The presence of the CFT at finite temperature gives us a unique opportunity to study the AdS/CFT+gravity conjecture at finite temperatures. We calculate various thermodynamic parameters to shed light on the nature of the strongly coupled CFT. This is the first use of the duality in a system containing accelerating particles on the brane.

There is increasing interest in the role played by pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pNGBs) in the construction of string-inspired models of inflation. In these models the inflaton is expected to be coupled to gauge fields, and will lead to the generation of magnetic fields that can be of cosmological interest. We study the production of such fields mainly focusing on the model of N-flation, where the collective effect of several pNGBs drives inflation. Because the produced fields are maximally helical, inverse cascade processes in the primordial plasma increase significantly their coherence length. We discuss under what conditions inflation driven by pNGBs can account for the observed cosmological magnetic fields. A constraint on the parameters of this class of inflationary scenarios is also derived by requiring that the magnetic field does not backreact on the inflating background.
