Abstract:
We present a thermal observation of Callisto's leading hemisphere obtained using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 0.87 mm (343 GHz). The angular resolution achieved for this observation was $\sim$$0.16^{\prime\prime}$, which for Callisto at the time of this observation ($D\sim 1.05^{\prime\prime}$) was equivalent to $\sim$6 elements across the surface. Our disk-integrated brightness temperature of 116 $\pm$ 5 K (8.03 $\pm$ 0.40 Jy) is consistent with prior disk-integrated observations. Global surface properties were derived from the observation using a thermophysical model (de Kleer et al. 2021) constrained by spacecraft data. We find that models parameterized by two thermal inertia components more accurately fit the data than single thermal inertia models. Our best-fit global parameters adopt a lower thermal inertia of 15-50 $\text{J}\:\text{m}^{-2}\:\text{K}^{-1}\:\text{s}^{-1/2}$ and a higher thermal inertia component of 1200-2000 $\text{J}\:\text{m}^{-2}\:\text{K}^{-1}\:\text{s}^{-1/2}$, with retrieved millimeter emissivities of 0.89-0.91. We identify several thermally anomalous regions, including spots $\sim$3 K colder than model predictions co-located with the Valhalla impact basin and a complex of craters in the southern hemisphere; this indicates the presence of materials possessing either a higher thermal inertia or a lower emissivity. A warm region confined to the mid-latitudes in these leading hemisphere data may be indicative of regolith property changes due to exogenic sculpting.

Abstract:
We report on the disk-averaged absolute brightness temperatures of Venus measured at four microwave frequency bands with the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS). We measure temperatures of 432.3 $\pm$ 2.8 K, 355.6 $\pm$ 1.3 K, 317.9 $\pm$ 1.7 K, and 294.7 $\pm$ 1.9 K for frequency bands centered at 38.8, 93.7, 147.9, and 217.5 GHz, respectively. We do not observe any dependence of the m…

We do not observe any dependence of the measured brightness temperatures on solar illumination for all four frequency bands. A joint analysis of our measurements with lower frequency Very Large Array (VLA) observations suggests relatively warmer ($\sim$ 7 K higher) mean atmospheric temperatures and lower abundances of microwave continuum absorbers than those inferred from prior radio occultation measurements.

The EnVision and VERITAS missions to Venus will fly with X and Ka band telecommunications channels which can be used to conduct radio occultation studies of Venus' atmosphere. While link attenuation measurements during prior S and X band occultation experiments have been used to determine vertical profiles of H$_2$SO$_4$ vapor abundance, the addition of the Ka band channel introduces greater sensitivity to the abundances of H$_2$SO$_4$ aerosols and SO$_2$ gas, permitting retrieval of their vertical profiles from dual band measurements. Such measurements would be valuable in the assessment of chemical and dynamical processes governing short and long-term variability in Venus' atmosphere. This paper considers the sensitivity of the X/Ka band radio attenuation measurement to these atmospheric constituents, as well as uncertainties and regularization approaches for conducting retrievals of these atmospheric sulfur species from future occultation experiments. We introduce methods for seeding maximum likelihood estimation retrievals using shape models and simple atmospheric transport constraints. From simulated retrievals, we obtain mean errors of the order of 0.5 ppm, 20 ppm, and 10 mg/m$^3$ for H$_2$SO$_4$ vapor, SO$_2$, and H$_2$SO$_4$ aerosol abundances, respectively, for simultaneous retrieval.

Abstract:
The observation of a 266.94 GHz feature in the Venus spectrum has been attributed to PH$_3$ in the Venus clouds, suggesting unexpected geological, chemical or even biological processes. Since both PH$_3$ and SO$_2$ are spectrally active near 266.94 GHz, the contribution to this line from SO$_2$ must be determined before it can be attributed, in whole or part, to PH$_3$. An undetected SO$_2$ reference line, interpreted as an unexpectedly low SO$_2$ abundance, suggested that the 266.94 GHz feature could be attributed primarily to PH$_3$. However, the low SO$_2$ and the inference that PH$_3$ was in the cloud deck posed an apparent contradiction. Here we use a radiative transfer model to analyze the PH$_3$ discovery, and explore the detectability of different vertical distributions of PH$_3$ and SO$_2$. We find that the 266.94 GHz line does not originate in the clouds, but above 80 km in the Venus mesosphere. This level of line formation is inconsistent with chemical modeling that assumes generation of PH$_3$ in the Venus clouds. Given the extremely short chemical lifetime of PH$_3$ in the Venus mesosphere, an implausibly high source flux would be needed to maintain the observed value of 20$\pm$10 ppb. We find that typical Venus SO$_2$ vertical distributions and abundances fit the JCMT 266.94 GHz feature, and the resulting SO$_2$ reference line at 267.54 GHz would have remained undetectable in the ALMA data due to line dilution. We conclude that nominal mesospheric SO$_2$ is a more plausible explanation for the JCMT and ALMA data than PH$_3$.

Recently published ALMA observations suggest the presence of 20 ppb PH$_3$ in the upper clouds of Venus. This is an unexpected result, as PH$_3$ does not have a readily apparent source and should be rapidly photochemically destroyed according to our current understanding of Venus atmospheric chemistry. While the reported PH$_3$ spectral line at 266.94 GHz is nearly co-located with an SO$_2$ spectral line, the non-detection of stronger SO$_2$ lines in the wideband ALMA data is used to rule out SO$_2$ as the origin of the feature. We present a reassessment of wideband and narrowband datasets derived from these ALMA observations. The ALMA observations are re-reduced following both the initial and revised calibration procedures discussed by the authors of the original study. We also investigate the phenomenon of apparent spectral line dilution over varying spatial scales resulting from the ALMA antenna configuration. A 266.94 GHz spectral feature is apparent in the narrowband data using the initial calibration procedures, but this same feature can not be identified following calibration revisions. The feature is also not reproduced in the wideband data. While the SO$_2$ spectral line is not observed at 257.54 GHz in the ALMA wideband data, our dilution simulations suggest that SO$_2$ abundances greater than the previously suggested 10 ppb limit would also not be detected by ALMA. Additional millimeter, sub-millimeter, and infrared observations of Venus should be undertaken to further investigate the possibility of PH$_3$ in the Venus atmosphere.
