The paper describes the MAGIC multi-mode focal reducer (Monitoring of Active Galaxies by Investigation of their Cores), commissioned on the 1-m Zeiss-1000 telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in September 2020. Three observational modes are currently realised: photometry, polarimetry, and long-slit spectroscopy. Reducing the focal length makes it possible to obtain a sufficiently large field of view for photometry and a large slit height for spectroscopy of $\sim$12$'$, as well as a large field of view for polarimetry with a quadrupole Wollaston prism of $\sim$6$'$.4. This feature makes the complex study of extended nebulae and galaxies efficient. The MAGIC capabilities are presented in examples of observations of various astronomical objects. The spectral mode in the range of 4000-7200 AA provides the spectral resolution $R \sim$ 1000; for a starlike target up to 14 mag in medium-band filters with a seeing of 1$''$ for 20 minutes of total exposure, the photometry accuracy is better than 0.01 mag and the polarization accuracy is better than 0.6%. Especially for the new focal reducer, an offset guide and a position angle rotation system were implemented. The results of the modernization of the baffle system in the optical scheme of the telescope for the suppression of scattered light are also described.

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are spatially extended, low surface brightness stellar systems with regular elliptical-like morphology found in large numbers in galaxy clusters and groups. Studies of the internal dynamics and dark matter content of UDGs have been hampered by their low surface brightnesses. We identified a sample of low-mass early-type post-starburst galaxies, `future UDGs' in the Coma cluster still populated with young stars, which will passively evolve into UDGs in the next 5$-$10 Gyr. We collected deep observations for a sample of low-mass early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster using MMT Binospec, which includes present-day and future UDGs. We derived their dark matter content within a half-light radius (70$-$95%) and total dynamical masses ($M_{200}=5.5\cdot10^9-1.4\cdot10^{11} M_{\odot}$) assuming the Burkert density profile and assess how different proposed evolutionary channels affect dark and visible matter in UDGs. We also discuss observational methodology of present and future UDG studies.

We present preliminary results from our spectroscopic survey of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster conducted with the Binospec spectrograph at the 6.5~m MMT. From spatially-resolved profiles of internal kinematics and stellar population properties complemented with high-resolution images, we placed several low-luminosity dEs on the fundamental plane in the low-luminosity extension of the available literature data. We also discovered unusual kpc-sized kinematically-decoupled cores in several dwarf galaxies, which had been probably formed before these galaxies entered the cluster.

Our main finding is that cluster passive ETG at $z \gtrsim 1.5$ with ${\rm log}(M/M_{\odot})>10.5$ are systematically $\gtrsim 0.2-0.3~{\rm dex}$ larger than field ETGs. The passive ETG average size evolution is slower at $1<z<2$ when compared to the field. This could be explained by differences in the formation and early evolution of galaxies in haloes of a different mass. Strong compaction and gas dissipation in field galaxies, followed by a sequence of mergers may have also played a significant role in the field ETG evolution, but not in the evolution of cluster galaxies. Our passive ETG mass-size relation shows a tendency to flatten at $9.6<{\rm log}(M/M_{\odot})<10.5$, where the average size is $\mathrm{log}(R_e/\mathrm{kpc}) = 0.05 \pm 0.22$. This implies that galaxies in the low end of the mass-size relation do not evolve much from $z\sim 2$ to the present, and that their sizes evolve in a similar way in clusters and in the field. BCGs lie on the same mass-size relation as satellites, suggesting that their size evolution is not different at redshift z $\gtrsim$ 2. Half of the active ETGs ($\sim 30\%$ of the ETGs) follow the field passive galaxy mass-size relation, and the other half follow the field active galaxy mass-size relation. These galaxies likely went through a recent merger or neighbor galaxy interaction, and would most probably quench at a later epoch and increase the fraction of passive ETGs in clusters. We do not observe a large population of compact galaxies, as is observed in the field at these redshifts, implying that the galaxies in our clusters are not observed in an epoch close to their compaction.

(Abridged) To understand if the morphology-density and passive-density relations are already established at z>1.5, we study galaxies in 16 confirmed clusters at $1.3<z<2.8$ from the CARLA survey. Our main finding is that the morphology-density and passive-density relations are already in place at $z\sim2$. The cluster at z = 2.8 shows a similar fraction of ETG as in the other clusters in its densest region. The cluster ETG and passive fractions depend on local environment and mildly on galaxy mass. They do not depend on global environment. At lower local densities, the CARLA clusters exhibit a lower ETG fraction than clusters at z = 1. This implies that the densest regions influence the morphology of galaxies first, with lower density local environments either taking longer or only influencing galaxy morphology at later cosmological times. Interestingly, we find evidence of high merger fractions in our clusters with respect to the field, but the merger fractions do not significantly depend on local environment. This suggests that merger remnants in the lowest density regions can reform disks fuelled by cold gas flows, but those in the highest density regions are cut-off from the gas supply and will become passive ETG. The percentages of active ETG, with respect to the total ETG population, are $21 \pm 6\%$ and $59 \pm 14\% $ at 1.35 < z <1.65 and 1.65 < z < 2.05, respectively, and about half of them are mergers or asymmetric in both redshift bins. All the spectroscopically confirmed CARLA clusters have properties consistent with clusters and proto-clusters. The differences between our results and those that find enhanced star formation and star-bursts in cluster cores at similar redshifts are probably due to the different sample selection criteria, which choose different environments that host galaxies with different accretion and pre-processing histories.

Low-mass early-type galaxies, including dwarf spheroidals (dSph) and brighter dwarf ellipticals (dE), dominate the galaxy population in groups and clusters. Recently, an additional early-type population of more extended ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) has been identified, sparking a discussion on the potential morphological and evolutionary connections between the three classifications. Here, we present the first measurements of spatially resolved stellar kinematics from deep integrated-light spectra of KDG 64 (UGC 5442), a large dSph galaxy in the M 81 group. From these data, we infer stellar population properties and dark matter halo parameters using Jeans dynamical modelling. We find an old, metal-poor stellar population with no young stars and a dark matter mass fraction of ~ 90 per cent within the half-light radius. These properties and the position of KDG 64 on the Fundamental Plane indicate that it is a local analogue of smaller UDGs in the Coma and Virgo clusters and is probably a transitional dSph-UDG object. Its evolutionary path cannot be uniquely established from the existing data, but we argue that supernovae feedback and tidal heating played key roles in shaping KDG 64.

Using our and other available in literature data, we found that the maximum degree of linear polarization of Phaethon in the V band is 45% at the phase angle 124 deg. Using the dependence (polarimetric slope-albedo) we have found the geometric albedo of asteroid Phaethon to be 0.06. This value falls into the lower range of albedo values for asteroids determined by different methods. The mean color indices U-B=0.207 and B-V=0.639 of the asteroid are derived at heliocentric and geocentric distances 1.077 au and 0.102 au, respectively. The effective diameter of Phaethon is estimated from obtained absolute magnitude and geometrical albedo, it is equal to 6.8 km. The best fit to the observed polarimetric data was obtained with the Sh-matrix model of conjugated random Gaussian particles composed of Mg-rich silicate (90%) and amorphous carbon (10%).

The report highlights the capabilities of two new instruments tested at the 1-meter Zeiss-1000 telescope of SAO RAS: the Stokes Polarimeter (StoP) and the MAGIC focal reducer. Optimized for the study of active galactic nuclei (AGN), methodically, these instruments are suitable for a wide range of small telescope tasks. The fields of view of StoP and MAGIC are 6' and 13' for direct images, respectively. The StoP device allows one to conduct photometric observations and polarimetric ones with a double Wollaston prism; the spectral mode was added to MAGIC. For a starlike target up to 14 mag in medium-band filters with a seeing of 1" for 20 minutes of total exposure, the photometry accuracy is better than 0.01 mag and the polarization accuracy is better than 0.6%. StoP and MAGIC received the first light in 2020 and are used in test mode at the Zeiss-1000. The report discusses the first results obtained by the authors with new instruments, as well as further prospects

Here we investigate the origin of the broadening and of a defining feature of Population B sources: a strong redward asymmetry of the Balmer emission lines. We focus on a prototypical source, Fairall 9. Spectropolarimetric data of the Fairall 9 broad H$β$ and H$α$ profiles allowed for a view of the geometric and dynamical complexity of the line emitting regions. Measurements (1) provided evidence of rotational motion; (2) were helpful to test the presence of polar and equatorial scatterers, and their association with non-virial motions.

The dust production rates in terms of Afrho was measured for these comets. Using the retrieved values, an average dust production rate was derived under different model assumptions. A tentative calculation of the total mass loss of the comet nucleus within a certain observation period was executed. We calculated the corresponding thickness of the depleted uppermost layer where high-volatile ices completely sublimated. The results obtained in our study strongly support the idea that the observed activity of Comet SW1 requires a permanent demolition of the upper surface layers.

We present new spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the first discovered gravitational lens Q0957+561 obtained with the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia). We explore spectropolarimetric parameters of Q0957+561 A,B components to investigate the innermost structure of the quasar, and explore the nature of polarization in lensed quasars. Additionally, we compare their present-day spectral characteristics with previous observations in order to study long-term spectral changes. We analyze spectral characteristics of lensed quasar comparing spectra of A and B images, as well as comparing previously observed image spectra with present-day ones. The polarization parameters of A-B images are compared. We also model the macro-lens influence on the polarization of the images representing the gravitational lens with a singular isothermal elliptical potential.
We find that the brightness and SED ratio of components A and B changed during a long period. Polarization in broad lines of components A and B showed that the equatorial scattering cannot be detected in this quasar. We find wavelength-dependent polarization that may be explained as a combination of the polarization from the disc and outflowing material. There is a significant difference between polarization parameters of the A and B images: the B component shows a higher polarization degree and polarization angle. However, both polarization vectors are nearly perpendicular to the observed radio jet projection. It indicates that the polarization in the continuum is coming from the accretion disc. Our simple lensing model of a polarized source showed that macro-lens can cause the observed differences in polarization parameters of Q0957+561 A,B images. Using Mg II broad line and luminosity of component A we estimated that the Q0957+561 black hole mass is M~(4.8-6.1) $10^8$ M$\odot$

The spatial maps of the relative intensity and circular polarization as well as the spectral distribution of linear polarization are presented. There were two features (dust and gas tails) orientedin the solar and antisolar directions on February 2 and 14 that allowed us to determine rotation periodof the nucleus as 11.1 hours. We detected emissions of C2 , C3 , CN, CH, NH2 molecules as well as CO+ and H2O+ ions, along with a high level of the dust continuum. On February 2, the degree of linear polarization in the continuum, within the wavelength range of 0.67-0.68 μm, was about 5% in the near-nucleus region up to near 6000 km and decreased to about 3% at near 40,000 km. The left-handed (negative) circular polarization at the level approximately from -0.06% to -0.4% was observed at the distances up to 3*10^4 km from the nucleus on February 14 and April 21, respectively.

Dust in comet 2P/Encke was mainly concentrated in the near-nucleus region of the coma: the maximum dust/gas ratios were 1.5 and 2.9 in the SED500 and the r-sdss filters near the nucleus but dropped sharply to ~0.2 and ~1 at the distance ~2500 km, respectively. Then these ratios began to increase at distances ~12000 km from the nucleus, the ratio was ~0.3 (SED500) and ~1.3 (r-sdds). There were significant variations of polarization over the coma, which correlated with the variations in the dust color and dust/gas ratio. Changes in polarization and color across the 2P/Encke coma indicate changes in physical properties of the dust particles with the distance from the nucleus. Our Sh-matrix computer simulations of light scattering by Gaussian particles allow us to suggest that the observed trends in color and polarization are mainly result from changing particle size.

The spectra and images obtained through broadband BVR filters for Jupiter famaly comet P/2011 P1 were analyzed. We observed the comet on November 24, 2011, when its heliocentric distance was 5.43 AU. Two dimensional long slit spectra and photometric images were obtained using the focal reducer SCORPIO attached to the prime focus of the 6-m telescope BTA (SAO RAS, Russia). The spectra cover the wavelength range of 4200-7000 Å. No emissions of C2 and CO+, which are expected in this wavelength region, were detected above 3 sigma level. An upper limit in gas production rate of C2 is expected to be 1.1*10^24 mol*s^-1. The continuum shows a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity along dispersion of 5.1% per 1000 Å. The color indices (B-V)=0.89 and (V-R) = 0.42 for the nucleus region or (B-V)=0.68 and (V-R)=0.39 for the coma region, which are derived from the photometric data, also evidence that the color of the cometary nucleus and dust are redder with respect to the Sun. Observations were carried out at the 6-m BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia) with the multimode focal reducer SCORPIO-2. In 2013, the direct images of comet Encke were obtained with the broad-band V filters, whereas in 2017 the narrow-band cometary BC, RC, and NH2 filters as well as the medium-band SED500 and broad-band r-sdss filters were used for observations. About 60 emissions belonging to the CN, C2, C3, NH2, CH, and CO+ molecules were identified within the range 3750-7100 Å. The ratios of the production rates C2/CN and C3/CN correspond to the typical comets, not depleted in the carbon-chain. A complex structure of the coma was detected in both observational periods. In January 2017, the dust was in general concentrated near the nucleus, the dust/gas ratio was 2.9 in the r-sdss filter, however, this ratio was larger than 1 at distances 3000-40000 km from the nucleus. We found that about 75% of the flux of the reflected light in the central pixel was due to the nucleus, whereas the nucleus's flux contributed 48% in the total intensity of the 2000 km area of the coma. We found that after correction for the dust coma contamination the nucleus magnitude is 18.8m+/-0.2m.

The spectra revealed the presence of CO+ and N2+ emissions in the cometary coma at a distance of 5.25 AU from the Sun. The ratio [N2+]/[CO+] within the projected slit is 0.013. The images obtained through BVR filters showed a bright, dust coma, indicating a high level of activity. We estimated a colour index and a colour excess for the comet. The parameter Af\r{ho}, which is used as an indicator of a cometary activity, was measured to be 2584 cm in the reference optical aperture of \r{ho}=10^4 km. The dust production constituted 33 kg/s and 9.3*10^3 kg/s, it was obtained using different methods. We also investigated the morphology of the comet using image enhancement techniques and found two jets in the coma.

We present an analysis of the results of photometric investigations of two distant comets, C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) and 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1, obtained with the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The comets under study demonstrate sufficient activity out of the zone of water ice sublimation (at heliocentric distances longer than 5 AU). In the spectra of the investigated comets, we found the CO+ and N2+ emission. The presence of this emission may say that the comets were formed in the outer parts of the Solar System, in a protoplanetary cloud at a temperature <=25 K. We found that the photometric maximum of the ionosphere (in the CO+ filter) of the comet C/2002 VQ94 (LINEAR) is shifted relative to the photometric center of the dust coma by 1.4 arcsec (7.44*10^3 km) in the direction deflected by 63 deg from the direction to the Sun. Using special filters to process the images, we picked out active structures (jets) in the dust coma of the 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 comet.

The CCD images of the comet were obtained in wideband R filters at the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) and at the 2m telescope of the Peak Terskol Observatory. The processing of the images with special digital filters allowed the active structures (jets) to be distinguished in the dust coma of the comet. With the cross correlation method, the rotation period of the cometary nucleus was determined as 12.1 and 11.7 days for the observations taken in December 2008, and February 2009, respectively. The probable causes of the difference in the estimates of the rotation period of the cometary nucleus obtained by differen authors are discussed.

CO+ ions are more concentrated towards the nucleus than the dust continuum. The column density of the CO+ was derived and found to vary from 3.7*10^9 to 4.3*10^10 ions cm^-2. The production rate of CO+ was estimated to be from (7.01)*10^24 to (1.15)*10^26 ions s^-1. We discuss possible mechanisms for the ionization of cometary material and show that impact ionization by solar wind particles is probably the main ionization mechanism at large heliocentric distances.

For type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which the equatorial scattering is the dominant broad line polarization mechanism, it is possible to measure the supermassive black hole mass by tracing the Keplerian motion across the polarization plane positionangle. So far this method has been used for 30 objects but only for H$α$ emission line. We explore the possibilities this method for determining SMBH masses using polarization in broad emission lines by applying it for the first time to Mg II$λ$2798AA spectral line. We use 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code stokes for simultaneous modeling of equatorial scattering of H$α$, H$β$ and Mg II lines. We included vertical inflows and outflows in the MgII broad line region (BLR). We find that polarization states of H$α$ and H$β$ lines are almost identical and SMBH mass estimates differ by 7%. For Mg II line, we find that polarization angle ${\varphi}$ exhibits an additional "plateau" with a constant ${\varphi}$, which deviates than the profiles expected for pure Keplerian motion. SMBH mass estimates using Mg II line are higher by up to 35% than those obtained from H$α$ and H$β$ lines. Our model shows that for vertical inflows and outflows in the BLR that is higher or comparable to Keplerian velocity, this method can be applied as a first approximation for obtaining SMBH mass.

Due to the compactness active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are still unresolved with optical observations. However, structure and physical conditions of the matter in their central parts are especially important to study the processes of the matter accretion to supermassive black holes and eventually these investigations are essential to understand the galaxy evolution. Polarization contains information about the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the environment and provides information about the physical processes in the central regions of the AGNs that could not be found with the help of other optical observations. In this paper, the importance of applying polarimetry methods to the study of geometry, kinematics, and physical processes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) in polarized light is discussed. An overview of the mechanisms of polarization formation, their connection with different structures and scales are provided. Also, we overview the polarimetric investigations based on different assumptions that are done using the observations conducted in Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The observation data analysis reveals the variability both in total and polarized light on the 1.5-hour timescales that specifies the size of the unresolved emitting region. The numerical model of polarization in jet with the helical structure of the magnetic field is suggested, and fitting the model reveals a magnetic field precession with a period of about 15 days.

Here we give an observational method for measurements of the equatorial scattering region radius using variability in the polarized broad lines in Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The polarization in broad lines of Type 1 AGNs is mostly caused by equatorial scattering, where specific features allow one to separate its contribution from the total polarized flux. We propose to monitor variability in the polarized line flux and find the time lag between the nonpolarized continuum and polarized broad line variability. The distance to the scattering screen can then be determined from the time delay. The method was, for the first time, applied to the observations of the Type 1 AGN Mrk 6, and we found that the size of the scattering region in this AGN is around 100 light days. That is significantly smaller than the dusty region size estimated by the infrared interferometric observations and also larger than known broad line region (BLR) size. This indicates that the scattering region lies between the BLR and the dusty region and could be used as a probe of the dust sublimation radius.

We present new spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112 taken with the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO, Russia). In order to explain the variability that is observed only in the blue wing of the C IV emission line, corresponding to image A, we analyze the spectroscopy and polarimetry of the four images of the lensed system. Spectra of the four images were taken in 2007, 2008, and 2018, and polarization was measured in the period 2014-2017. Additionally, we modeled the microlensing effect in the polarized light, assuming that the source of polarization is the equatorial scattering in the inner part of the torus. We find that a blue enhancement in the CIV line wings affects component A in all three epochs. We also find that the UV continuum of component D was amplified in the period 2007-2008, and that the red wings of CIII] and CIV appear brighter in D than in the other three components. We report significant changes in the polarization parameters of image D, which can be explained by microlensing. Our simulations of microlensing of an equatorial scattering region in the dusty torus can qualitatively explain the observed changes in the polarization degree and angle of image D. We do not detect significant variability in the polarization parameters of the other images (A, B, and C), although the averaged values of the polarization degree and angle are different for the different images. Microlensing of a broad line region model including a compact outflowing component can qualitatively explain the CIV blue wing enhancement (and variation) in component A. However, to confirmed this hypothesis, we need additional spectroscopic observation in future.

We describe an observational campaign with the new high-throughput Binospec spectrograph at the 6.5-m MMT. It targets a representative sample of dwarf elliptical (dE), ultra-diffuse (UDG), and dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. We outline our data analysis approach that features (i) a full spectrophotometric fitting to derive internal kinematics and star formation histories of galaxies; (ii) two-dimensional light profile decomposition; (iii) Jeans anisotropic modelling to assess their internal dynamics and dark matter content. We present first results for 9 UDGs in the Coma cluster and a nearby dSph galaxy, which suggest that a combination of internal (supernovae feedback) and environmental (ram-pressure stripping, interactions) processes can explain observed properties of UDGs and, therefore, establish an evolutionary link between UDGs, dSph, and dE galaxies.

Long-slit spectra and photometric and linear polarimetric images were obtained using the focal reducer SCORPIO-2 attached to the prime focus of the 6-m telescope BTA (SAO RAS, Russia). We simulated the behavior of color and polarization in the coma presenting the cometary dust as a set of polydisperse polyshapes rough spheroids. No emissions were detected in the 3800~--~7200~$Å$ wavelength range. The continuum showed a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity 21.6$\pm$0.2\% per 1000~$Å$ within the 4650~--~6200~$Å$ wavelength region. The fan-like structure in the sunward hemisphere was detected. The radial profiles of surface brightness differ for r-sdss and g-sdss filters, indicating predominance of submicron and micron-sized particles in cometary coma. The dust color (g--r) varies from 0.75$ \pm $0.05$^m$ to 0.45$ \pm $0.06$^m$ along the tail. For aperture radius near 20~000~km, the dust productions in various filters were estimated as $Afρ$~=~680$\pm$18~cm (r-sdss) and 887$ \pm $16~cm (g-sdss). The polarization map showed spatial variations of polarization over the coma from about --3\% near the nucleus to --8\% at cometocentric distance about 150~000~km. Our simulations show that the dust particles were dominated (or covered) by ice and tholin-like organics. Spatial changes in the color and polarization can be explained by particle fragmentation.

Here we present the long-term optical spectral monitoring of a changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN) NGC 3516 that covers 22 years (from 1996 to 2018). We explore a variability in the broad lines and continuum, finding that the continuum is changing by more than a factor of 2, while the broad lines are varying by more than a factor of 10. The minimum of activity is observed in 2014, when the broad lines almost disappeared. We confirm that NGC 3516 is a changing-look AGN, and the absorption seen in the UV and X-ray may indicate that there is an obscuring region which is responsible for this.
The line profiles are also changing. The mean profiles of the broad Halpha and Hbeta lines show shoulder-like structure in the wings, and enhanced peak, that may indicate a complex BLR. The rms-profiles of both lines seem to have the same shape and width of around 4200 km/s, indicating practically the same kinematics in the Halpha and Hbeta emitting regions.
Measured time-lags between the continuum and Halpha and Hbeta broad-line variability are ~15 and 17 days, respectively, that in combination with the broad lines width allows us to estimate the NGC 3516 central black hole mass. We find that the black hole mass is 4.73+-1.40 x 10^7M_sun which is in agreement with previous estimates.

We measured the Stokes parameters for the continuum and the broad H$α$ line and obtained the values of polarization degree and the angle of polarization. We found that equatorial scattering is dominant polarization mechanism in the sample, that allows us to use the observed polarization in the broad lines for determination of the central black hole (BH) masses and characteristics (the inclination and emissivity) of the Broad Line Region (BLR). We demonstrated that the recently proposed method of \cite{ap15} for BH mass measurement gives accurate BH masses which are in a good correlation with the stellar velocity dispersion, and consequently the masses determined by the polarization method can be used with calibration purposes. Additionally we found that the BLR in the sample of 30 AGN has an averaged inclination of $35^\circ\pm9^\circ$ (mostly between 20 and 40 degrees) and emissivity $α\sim -0.57$ that is more flat than one expected for the classical accretion disc $α\sim -0.75$.

The bright radio source S5 0716+714, that is usually classified as BL Lac object, is one of the most intensively studied. S5 0716+714 demonstrates extremely peculiar properties such as the shortest time-scale of optical and polarimetric variations observed in blazars. In given paper, the results of 9-hour polarimetric monitoring of S5 0716+714 with the $\sim$70-second resolution, carried out by the 6-m telescope BTA of SAO RAS, are presented. The observation data analysis reveals the variability both in total and polarized light on the 1-1.5-hour time-scale. Since polarization is generated by plasma motion in the magnetic field, the variations of polarization vector are bounded with the magnetic field configuration and the average time-scales specify the size of the emitting region, unresolved directly. We suggest a processed numerically model of polarization in the jet with the precessing helical magnetic field. Fitting the model discovers that observed short-term variations with the complicated trajectory of polarization vector could be induced by the magnetic field precession with the period $T \approx 15$ days.

We describe the scheme and design features of the new IFU unit (Integral Field Unit) meant to perform integral-field spectroscopy as a part of SCORPIO-2 focal reducer, which is mounted in the prime focus of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The design of the unit is based on the principle of the formation of array spectra using a lens raster combined with optical fibers. The unit uses a rectangular raster consisting of 22x22 square 2-mm diameter lenses. The image of the object is transferred by an optical system with a 23x magnification from the focal plane of the telescope to the plane of the lens raster. The image scale is 0.75"/lens and the field of view of the instrument has the size of 16.5"x16.5". The raster also contains two extra 2x7 lens arrays to acquire the night-sky spectra whose images are offset by $\pm$3' from the center. Optical fibers are used to transform micropupil images into two pseudoslits located at the IFU collimator entrance. When operating in the IFU mode a set of volume phase holographic gratings (VPHG) provides a spectral range of 4600-7300 Å and a resolution $λ/δλ$ of 1040 to 2800. The quantum efficiency of SCORPIO-2 field spectroscopy is 6-13% depending on the grating employed. We describe the technique of data acquisition and reduction using IFU unit and report the results of test observations of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 78 performed on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

This method gives measured masses which are in a good agreement with reverberation estimates. Additionally, we explore the possibilities and limits of this method using the STOKES radiative transfer code taking a dominant Keplerian motion in the broad line region (BLR). We found that this method can be used for the direct SMBH mass estimation in the cases when in addition to the Kepler motion, radial inflows or vertical outflows are present in the BLR. Some advantages of the method are discussed.

We present an analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic data of the comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) observed at the heliocentric distances of 6.21÷4.81 AU. The photometric observations were made with the 60-cm Zeiss-600 telescope (ICAMER, peak Terskol, Russia) and the spectroscopic observations were performed using the SCORPIO-2 focal reducer mounted in the prime focus of the 6-m BTA telescope (SAO RAS, Russia). We analyse the B, V and R-band images to describe the dusty cometary coma and to investigate its brightness, colours and dust production rate. The spectra cover the wavelength range of 3600÷7070 Å. No emissions which are expected in this wavelength region were detected above the 3$σ$ level. The continuum shows a reddening effect with the normalized gradient of reflectivity along dispersion of (9.3$\pm$1.1)% per 1000 Å. A dust-loss rate was derived using the obtained values and under the different model assumptions. Our simulations clearly indicate that to retrieve dust production from the observational Af$ρ$ parameter is an ambiguous task. The result of such a procedure is strongly dependent on dynamical (e.g. effective density and cross-section) as well as optical (e.g. scattering coefficient and phase function) characteristics of dust grains. A variation of the mentioned parameters can lead to dramatic changes in the evaluation of mass production. We demonstrate that the dynamic and optical properties are interconnected via the microscopic properties of dust grains (effective size and porosity).

We present the results of optical long-slit spectral observations of interacting system Arp305 carried out at the 6m telescope BTA at the SAO RAS: the radial variation of gas kinematics and oxygen abundance. This study continues the series of spectral observations of tidal debris in the interacting galaxies. Here we pay special attention to the star-forming region between the interacting galaxies - a tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidate. This star-forming system appears to be gravitationally bound or close to this condition. We show that TDG is metal poor in comparison to the parental galaxy. It can indicate that either the origin of star-forming gas of TDG was very far from the centre of parent galaxy or its gas has been diluted by the accretion of metal poor intergalactic gas. Nevertheless the region of the brightest emission clump in TDG where a current star formation takes place reveals a noticeable colour excess evidencing a local gas concentration. We pay attention that TDG is situated in the region of intersection of two gas flows and is in a process of formation probably caused by the collision of these flows. Low velocity difference between TDG, NGC 4017 and the gaseous bridge between them evidences that the lifetime of TDG is restricted by the time of its fall back onto the parent galaxy.

The origin of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), a class of compact stellar systems discovered two decades ago, still remains a matter of debate. Recent discoveries of central supermassive black holes in UCDs likely inherited from their massive progenitor galaxies provide support for the tidal stripping hypothesis. At the same time, on statistical grounds, some massive UCDs might be representatives of the high luminosity tail of the globular cluster luminosity function. Here we present a detection of a $3.3^{+1.4}_{-1.2}\times10^6\,M_{\odot}$ black hole ($1σ$ uncertainty) in the centre of the UCD3 galaxy in the Fornax cluster, that corresponds to 4 per cent of its stellar mass. We performed isotropic Jeans dynamical modelling of UCD3 using internal kinematics derived from adaptive optics assisted observations with the SINFONI spectrograph and seeing limited data collected with the FLAMES spectrograph at the ESO VLT. We rule out the zero black hole mass at the $3σ$ confidence level when adopting a mass-to-light ratio inferred from stellar populations. This is the fourth supermassive black hole found in a UCD and the first one in the Fornax cluster. Similarly to other known UCDs that harbour black holes, UCD3 hosts metal rich stars enhanced in $α$-elements that supports the tidal stripping of a massive progenitor as its likely formation scenario. We estimate that up to 80 per cent of luminous UCDs in galaxy clusters host central black holes. This fraction should be lower for UCDs in groups, because their progenitors are more likely to be dwarf galaxies, which do not tend to host central black holes.

The innermost regions in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) were not being spatially resolved so far but spectropolarimetry can provide us insight about their hidden physics and the geometry. From spectropolarimetric observations in broad emission lines and assuming equatorial scattering as a dominant polarization mechanism, it is possible to estimate the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We explore the possibilities and limits and to put constraints on the usage of the method for determining SMBH masses using polarization in broad emission lines by providing more in-depth theoretical modeling. Methods. We use the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code STOKES for exploring polarization of Type 1 AGNs. We model equatorial scattering using flared-disk geometry for a set of different SMBH masses assuming Thomson scattering. In addition to the Keplerian motion in the BLR, we also consider cases of additional radial inflows and vertical outflows. We model the profiles of polarization plane position angle, degree of polarization and total unpolarized line for different BLR geometries and different SMBH masses. Our modeling confirms that the method can be widely used for Type-1 AGNs when viewing inclinations are between 25 and 45 degrees. We show that the distance between the BLR and scattering region (SR) has a significant impact on the mass estimates and the best mass estimates are when the SR is situated at the distance 1.5-2.5 times larger than the outer BLR radius. Our models show that if Keplerian motion can be traced through the polarized line profile, then the direct estimation of the mass of the SMBH can be performed. When radial inflows or vertical outflows are present in the BLR, this method can be applied if velocities of the inflow/outflow are less than 500 km/s. We find that models for NGC4051, NGC4151, 3C273 and PG0844+349 are in good agreements with observations.

We describe a device (adapter) for off-axis guiding and photometric calibration of wide-angle spectrographs operating in the prime focus of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. To compensate coma in off-axis star images an achromatic lens corrector is used, which ensures maintaining image quality (FWHM) at a level of about 1'' within 15' from the optical axis. The device has two 54'-diameter movable guiding fields, which can move in 10' x 4'.5 rectangular areas. The device can perform automatic search for guiding stars, use them to control the variations of atmospheric transmittance, and focus the telescope during exposure. The limiting magnitude of potential guiding stars is mR ~17 mag. The calibration path whose optical arrangement meets the telecentrism condition allows the spectrograph to be illuminated both by a source of line spectrum (a He-Ne-Ar filled lamp) and by a source of continuum spectrum. The latter is usually represented either by a halogen lamp or a set of light-emitting diodes, which provide illumination of approximately uniform intensity over the wavelength interval from 350 to 900 nm. The adapter is used for observations with SCORPIO-2 multimode focal reducer.

We present a summary of the campaign of remote observations that supported the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission. Telescopes across the globe (and in space) followed comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko from before Rosetta's arrival until nearly the end of mission in September 2016. These provided essential data for mission planning, large-scale context information for the coma and tails beyond the spacecraft, and a way to directly compare 67P with other comets. The observations revealed 67P to be a relatively `well behaved' comet, typical of Jupiter family comets and with activity patterns that repeat from orbit-to-orbit. Comparison between this large collection of telescopic observations and the in situ results from Rosetta will allow us to better understand comet coma chemistry and structure. This work is just beginning as the mission ends -- in this paper we present a summary of the ground-based observations and early results, and point to many questions that will be addressed in future studies.

We present the results of the long-term (20-year period, from 1996 to 2015) optical spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469. The variation in the light-curves of the broad He II λ4686A Hβ and Hα lines, and the continuum at 5100A and 6300A have been explored. The maximum of activity was in 1998, and the variability in the continuum and lines seems to have two periods of around 1200 and 2600 days, however these periodicities should be taken with caution because of the red-noise. Beside these periods, there are several short-term (1-5 days) flare-like events in the light-curves. There are good correlations between the continuum fluxes and Hα and Hβ line fluxes, but significantly smaller correlation between the He II and continuum. We found that the time-lags between the continuum and broad lines are different for Hβ (~20 l.d.) and Hα (~3 l.d.), and that He II also has a smaller lag (~2-3 l.d.). The Hα and Hβ line profiles show a slight red asymmetry, and the broad line profiles did not changed in the 20-year period. Using the lags and widths of Hα and Hβ we estimated the central black hole mass and found that it is ~(1-6)x$10^7 M_{\odot}$, which is in agreement with previous reverberation estimates.

Arp194 is a system of recently collided galaxies, where the southern galaxy (S) passed through the gaseous disc of the northern galaxy (N) which in turn consists of two close components. This system is of special interest due to the presence of regions of active star-formation in the bridge between galaxies, the brightest of which (the region A) has a size of at least 4 kpc. We obtained three spectral slices of the system for different slit positions at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. We estimated the radial distribution of line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion as well as the intensities of emission lines and oxygen abundance $12+\log(\mathrm{O/H})$. The gas in the bridge is only partially mixed chemically and spatially: we observe the O/H gradient with the galactocentric distances both from S and N galaxies and a high dispersion of O/H in the outskirts of N-galaxy. Velocity dispersion of the emission-line gas is the lowest in the star-forming sites of the bridge and exceeds 50-70 km/s in the disturbed region of N-galaxy. Based on the SDSS photometrical data and our kinematical profiles we measured the masses of stellar population and the dynamical masses of individual objects. We confirm that the region A is the gravitationally bound tidal dwarf with the age of $10^7 - 10^8 $ yr, which is falling onto the parent S- galaxy. There is no evidence of the significant amount of dark matter in this dwarf galaxy.

We report on the MASTER Global Robotic Net discovery of an eclipsing binary, MASTER OT J095310.04+335352.8, previously known as unremarkable star TYC 2505-672-1, which displays extreme orbital parameters. The orbital period P=69.1 yr is more than 2.5 times longer than that of epsilon-Aurigae, which is the previous record holder. The light curve is characterized by an extremely deep total eclipse with a depth of more than 4.5 mag, which is symmetrically shaped and has a total duration of 3.5 yrs. The eclipse is essentially gray. The spectra acquired with the Russian 6 m BTA telescope both at minimum and maximum light mainly correspond to an M0-1III--type red giant, but the spectra taken at the bottom of eclipse show small traces of a sufficiently hot source. The observed properties of this system can be better explained as the red giant eclipsed by a large cloud (the disk) of small particles surrounding the invisible secondary companion.

We describe the technique of spectropolarimetric observations allowing for the measurements of the Stokes parameters in one of the observational modes of the SCORPIO focal reducer of the 6-m BTA telescope of the SAO RAS. The characteristics of the instrument in the spectropolarimetric mode of observations are given. We present the algorithm of observational data reduction. The capabilities of the SCORPIO spectropolarimetric mode are demonstrated on the examples of observations of various astronomical objects.

Abstract:
Photometric and spectroscopic observations of five nearly parabolic comets with eccentricity larger than 0.99 at heliocentric distances greater than 4 AU were performed. No molecular emission was observed for any studied comet and the entire cometary activity in all cases was attributed to dust production. Upper limits of the gas production rates for the main neutral molecules in the cometary coma…

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of five nearly parabolic comets with eccentricity larger than 0.99 at heliocentric distances greater than 4 AU were performed. No molecular emission was observed for any studied comet and the entire cometary activity in all cases was attributed to dust production. Upper limits of the gas production rates for the main neutral molecules in the cometary comae were calculated. The derived values of dust apparent magnitudes were used to estimate the upper limit of the geometric cross-section of cometary nuclei (upper limits of radii range from 2 km to 28 km). Due to the poor sublimation of water ice at these distances from the Sun, other mechanisms triggering activity in comets are discussed.

Abstract:
We present the analysis of the polarimetric and spectral data obtained for the dynamically new comet C/2012\,J1 (Catalina) when it was at a distance of 3.17~AU from the Sun. The observations were made at the prime focus of the 6-m BTA telescope using the SCORPIO-2 focal reducer. The map of the distribution of linear polarization in the cometary coma was constructed. The calculated value of linear polarization was on average about $-2\%$. Spectral analysis of the cometary coma allowed us to detect the emission of the CN molecule in the (0--0) band. The gas production rate was derived using the Haser model and amounted to $3.7\times10^{23}$~molecules per second.
