The nature of the central singularity of the BTZ geometries -- stationary vacuum solutions of 2+1 gravity with negative cosmological constant $Λ=-\ell^{-2}$ and $SO(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry -- is discussed. The essential tool for this analysis is the holonomy operator on a closed path (i.e., Wilson loop) around the central singularity. The study considers the holonomies for the Lorentz and AdS$_3$ connections. The analysis is carried out for all values of the mass $M$ and angular momentum $J$, namely, for black holes ($M \ell \ge |J|$) and naked singularities ($M \ell < |J|$). In general, both Lorentz and AdS$_3$ holonomies are nontrivial in the zero-radius limit revealing the presence of delta-like singularity at the origin in the curvature and torsion two-forms. However, in the cases $M\pm J/\ell=-n_{\pm}^2$, with $n_{\pm} \in \mathbb{N}$, recently identified in \cite{GMYZ} as BPS configurations, the AdS$_3$ holonomy reduces to the identity. Nevertheless, except for the AdS$_{3}$ spacetime ($M=-1$, $J=0$), all BTZ geometries have a central singularity which is not revealed by local operations.

We compute the Killing spinor equation on the BTZ geometry in different ways, looking for BPS solutions on the entire space of parameters. We focus our attention on defects that represent geometries with integer angular excesses; these correspond to specific negative values of the BTZ mass. We compare our solutions with other results in the literature, finding exact agreement. We argue that, in the semiclassical limit, the BPS defects can be associated to degenerate representations of the Virasoro symmetry at the boundary. The case of non-diagonal representations, describing stationary, non-static defects, is also discussed.

We consider a k-essence model in which a single scalar field can be responsible for both primordial inflation and the present observed acceleration of the cosmological background geometry, while also admitting a nonsingular de Sitter beginning of the Universe (it arises from de Sitter and ends in de Sitter). The early one is driven by a slow-roll potential, and the late one is driven by a dynamical dimensional reduction process which freezes the scalar field in a degenerate surface, turning it into a cosmological constant. This is done by proposing a realizable stable cosmic time crystal, although giving a different interpretation to the ''moving ground stat'', in which there is no motion because the system loses degrees of freedom. Furthermore, the model is free of pathologies such as propagating superluminal perturbations, negative energies, and perturbation instabilities.

We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(β_i)$ and the singlet $(τ)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $β_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. The latter acts as a geometric flux which, in some cases, removes the causal singularity.

Counting the degrees of freedom of the massless Rarita-Schwinger theory is revisited using Behrends-Fronsdal projectors. The identification of the gauge invariant part of the vector-spinor is thus straightforward, consisting of spins 1/2 and 3/2. The validity of this statement is supported by the explicit solution found in the standard gamma-traceless gauge. Since the obtained systems are deterministic -- free of arbitrary functions of time -- we argue that the often-invoked residual gauge symmetry lacks fundamental grounding and should not be used to enforce new external constraints. The result is verified by the total Hamiltonian dynamics. We conclude that eliminating the spin-12 mode \textit{via} the extended Hamiltonian dynamics would be acceptable if the Dirac conjecture was assumed; however, this framework does not accurately describe the original Lagrangian system.

We examine the semiclassical backreaction of a conformally coupled scalar field on an overspinning BTZ geometry. This extends the work done on a similar problem for ($2+1$)- AdS geometries of the BTZ family with $|M|>|J|$. The overspinning classical solutions corresponds to $|M|<|J|$ and possess a naked singularity at $r=0$. Using the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such a spacetime, we obtain the semiclassical Einstein equations, which we attempt to solve perturbatively. We show that the stress-energy tensor is non-renormalizable in this approach, and consequently the perturbative solution to the semiclassical equations in the overspinning case does not exist. This could be an indication of the fact that the naked singularity at the center of an overspinning geometry is of a more severe nature than the conical singularity found in the same family of BTZ geometries.

The solutions are endowed with curvature and torsional singularities which are both surrounded by an event horizon. They are asymptotically Lorentz flat, representing the torsional generalization of the Riegert black hole in conformal gravity. We compute the partition function to first order in the saddle-point approximation which turns out to be finite without any reference to boundary counterterms. We find a non-maximmally symmetric thermalized ground state, whose existence is relevant when studying Hawking-Page phase transitions. We analyze the Rarita--Schwinger (RS) massless theory in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches. At the Lagrangian level, the standard gamma-trace gauge fixing constraint leaves a spin-1/2 and a spin-3/2 propagating Poincaré group helicities. At the Hamiltonian level, the result depends on whether the Dirac conjecture--that all first class constraints generate gauge symmetries--is assumed or not. In the affirmative case, a secondary first class constraint must be added to the total Hamiltonian and a corresponding gauge fixing condition must be imposed, completely removing the spin-1/2 sector. In the opposite case, the spin-1/2 field propagates and the Hamilton field equations match the Euler-Lagrange equations.

We present a simplified model of the atmosphere of a terrestrial planet as an open two-dimensional system described by an ideal gas with velocity $\vec{v}$, density $ρ$ and temperature $T$ fields. Starting with the Chern-Simons equations for a free inviscid fluid, the external effects of radiation and the exchange of matter with the strata, as well as diffusion and dissipation are included. The resulting dynamics is governed by a set of nonlinear differential equations of first order in time. This defines an initial value problem that can be integrated given the radiation balance of the planet. If the nonlinearities are neglected, the integration can be done in analytic form using standard Green function methods, with small nonlinearities incorporated as perturbative corrections in a consistent way. If the nonlinear approximation is not justified, the problem can be integrated numerically. The analytic expressions as well as the simulations of the linear regime for a continuous range of parameters in the equations is provided, which allows to explore the response of the model to changes of those parameters. In particular, it is observed that a 2.5% reduction in the emissivity of the atmosphere can lead to an increase of 7C degrees in the average global temperature.

Several interesting physical systems, such as the Lovelock extension of General Relativity in higher dimensions, classical time crystals, k-essence fields, Horndeski theories, compressible fluids, and nonlinear electrodynamics, have apparent ill defined sympletic structures, due to the fact that their Hamiltonians are multi-valued functions of the momenta. In this paper, the dynamical evolution generated by such Hamiltonians is described as a degenerate dynamical system, whose sympletic form does not have a constant rank, allowing novel features and interpretations not present in previous investigations. In particular, it is shown how the multi-valuedness is associated with a dynamical mechanism of dimensional reduction, as some degrees of freedom turn into gauge symmetries when the system degenerates.

This dual operator allows us to construct an action that is gauge invariant under the grading even bosonic generators. We provide a self-dual notion based on the dual operator. We use the definition of the dual operator to contruct a model with gauge invariance $SO(1,3)\times SU(N) \times U(1) \subset SU(2,2|N)$. The choice of a graded dual operator allows us to overcome technical difficulties of $U(N)$ unified theories based on the superconformal group. The gravity action reproduces the Einstein-Hilbert action in certain sector of the theory. The definition of the dual operator allows us to include fermionic matter in the gauge connection in a geometric manner. We give a summary with possible phenomenological parameters that are included in the model.

The model closely resembles a Yang-Mills theory -- including the action principle, equations of motion and gauge transformations -- which avoids the use of the otherwise complicated component formalism. The theory enjoys $H=SO(3,1)\times \mathbb{R} \times U(1)\times SU(2)$ off-shell symmetry whilst the broken symmetries $G/H$, translation-type symmetries and supersymmetry, can be recovered on surface of integrability conditions of the equations of motion, for which it suffices the Rarita-Schwinger equation and torsion-like constraints to hold. Using the \textit{matter ansatz} -- projecting the $1 \otimes 1/2$ reducible representation into the spin-$1/2$ irreducible sector -- we obtain (chiral) fermion models with gauge and gravity interactions.

The case $M \ell \geq |J|$, where $\ell$ is the anti-de Sitter radius, provides the black hole. Extending the metric to other values of of $M$ and $J$ leads to geometries with the same asymptotic behavior and global symmetries, but containing a naked singularity at the origin. The case $M \ell \leq -|J|$ corresponds to spinning conical singularities that are reasonably well understood. Here we examine the remaining case, that is $-|J|<M\ell<|J|$. These naked singularities are mathematically acceptable solutions describing classical spacetimes. They are obtained by identifications of the covering pseudosphere in $\mathbb{R}^{2,2}$ and are free of closed timelike curves. Here we study the causal structure and geodesics around these \textit{overspinning} geometries. We present a review of the geodesics for the entire BTZ family. The geodesic equations are completely integrated, and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. Special attention is given to the determination of circular geodesics, where new results are found. According to the radial bounds, eight types of noncircular geodesics appear in the BTZ spacetimes. For the case of overspinning naked singularity, null and spacelike geodesics can reach infinity passing by a point nearest to the singularity, others extend from the central singularity to infinity, and others still have a radial upper bound and terminate at the singularity. Timelike geodesics cannot reach infinity; they either loop around the singularity or fall into it. The spatial projections of the geodesics (orbits) exhibit self-intersections, whose number is determined for null and spacelike geodesics, and it is found a special class of timelike geodesics whose spatial projections are closed.

In supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the observed particles come in fermion-boson pairs necessary for the realization of supersymmetry (SUSY). In spite of the expected abundance of super-partners for all the known particles, not a single supersymmetric pair has been reported to date. Although a hypothetical SUSY breaking mechanism, operating at high energy inaccessible to current experiments cannot be ruled out, this reduces SUSY's predictive power and it is unclear whether SUSY, in its standard form, can help reducing the remaining puzzles of the standard model (SM). Here we argue that SUSY can be realized in a different way, connecting spacetime and internal bosonic symmetries, combining bosonic gauge fields and fermionic matter particles in a single gauge field, a Lie superalgebra-valued connection. In this unconventional representation, states do not come in SUSY pairs, avoiding the doubling of particles and fields and SUSY is not a fully off-shell invariance of the action. The resulting systems are remarkably simple, closely resembling a standard quantum field theory and SUSY still emerges as a contingent symmetry that depends on the features of the vacuum/ground state. We illustrate the general construction with two examples: i) A 2+1 dimensional system based on the $osp(2,2|2)$ superalgebra, including Lorentz and $u(1)$ generators that describes graphene; ii) A supersymmetric extension of 3+1 conformal gravity with an $SU(2,2|2)$ connection that describes a gauge theory with an emergent chiral symmetry breaking, coupled to gravity. The extensions to higher odd and even dimensions, as well as the extensions to accommodate more general internal symmetries are also outlined.

We analytically investigate the pertubative effects of a quantum conformally-coupled scalar field on rotating (2+1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-backreacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the naked singularity case, quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that hides the conical defect, thus turning it into a black hole. The fact that these effects occur not only for static but also for spinning geometries makes a strong case for the rôle of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in Nature.

We present a complete study of the geodesics around naked singularities in AdS$_3$, the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These stationary spacetimes, characterized by two conserved charges --mass and angular momentum--, are obtained through identifications along spacelike Killing vectors with a fixed point. They are interpreted as massive spinning point particles, and can be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of cosmic strings in four spacetime dimensions. The geodesic equations are completely integrated and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. We classify different geodesics in terms of their radial bounds, which depend on the constants of motion. Null and spacelike geodesics approach the naked singularity from infinity and either fall into the singularity or wind around and go back to infinity, depending on the values of these constants, except for the extremal and massless cases for which a null geodesic could have a circular orbit. Timelike geodesics never escape to infinity and do not always fall into the singularity, namely, they can be permanently bounded between two radii. The spatial projections of the geodesics (orbits) exhibit self-intersections, whose number is particularly simple for null geodesics. As a particular application, we also compute the lengths of fixed-time spacelike geodesics of the static naked singularity using two different regularizations.

The well-known fact that $S^1$, $S^3$ and $S^7$ are parallelizable manifolds admitting flat connections is revisited. The role of torsion in the construction of those flat connections is made explicit, and the possibilities allowed by different metric signatures are examined. A necessary condition for parallelizability in an open region is that the torsion tensor must be covariantly constant. This property can be used to obtain a relation between a torsion-free and flat connections. Our treatment covers Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian (non-Euclidean signature) hyperbolic manifolds of dimensions three and seven. Apart from the spherical cases mentioned above, the explicit flat $\mathfrak{so}(p,q)$ connections with $p+q=3,7$ are constructed for the coset manifolds $SO(p,q+1)/SO(p,q)$ or $SO(p+1,q)/SO(p,q)$.

We study the Lie symmetries of non-relativistic and relativistic higher order constant motions, in $d$ spatial dimensions, like constant acceleration, constant rate-of-change -of-acceleration (constant jerk), and so on. In the non-relativistic case, these symmetries contain the $z=\frac 2N$ Galilean conformal transformations, where $N$ is the order of the differential equation that defines the constant motion. The dimension of this group grows with $N$.
In the relativistic case the vanishing of the ($d+1$)-dimensional space-time relativistic acceleration, jerk, snap, ... , is equivalent, in each case, to the vanishing of a $d$-dimensional spatial vector. These vectors are the $d$-dimensional non-relativistic ones plus additional terms that guarantee the relativistic transformation properties of the corresponding $d+1$ dimensional vectors. In the case of acceleration there are no corrections, which implies that the Lie symmetries of zero acceleration motions are the same in the non-relativistic and relativistic cases. The number of Lie symmetries that are obtained in the relativistic case does not increase from the four-derivative order (zero relativistic snap) onwards. We also deduce a recurrence relation for the spatial vectors that in the relativistic case characterize the constant motions.

Time-dependent analytic solutions of the Einstein-Skyrme system --gravitating Skyrmions--, with topological charge one are analyzed in detail. In particular, the question of whether these Skyrmions reach a spherically symmetric configuration for $t\rightarrow+\infty$ is discussed. It is shown that there is a static, spherically symmetric solution described by the Ermakov-Pinney system, which is fully integrable by algebraic methods. For $Λ>0$ this spherically symmetric solution is found to be in a "neutral equilibrium" under small deformations, in the sense that under a small squashing it would neither blow up nor dissapear after a long time, but it would remain finite forever (plastic deformation). Thus, in a sense, the coupling with Einstein gravity spontaneously breaks the spherical symmetry of the solution. However, in spite of the lack of isotropy, for $t \to\infty$ (and $Λ>0$) the space time is locally flat and the anisotropy of the Skyrmion only reflects the squashing of spacetime.

The Dirac Hamiltonian formalism is applied to a system in $(2+1)$-dimensions consisting of a Dirac field $ψ$ minimally coupled to Chern-Simons $U(1)$ and $SO(2,1)$ connections, $A$ and $ω$, respectively. This theory is connected to a supersymmetric Chern-Simons form in which the gravitino has been projected out (unconventional supersymmetry) and, in the case of a flat background, corresponds to the low energy limit of graphene. The separation between first-class and second-class constraints is performed explicitly, and both the field equations and gauge symmetries of the Lagrangian formalism are fully recovered. The degrees of freedom of the theory in generic sectors shows that the propagating states correspond to fermionic modes in the background determined by the geometry of the graphene sheet and the nondynamical electromagnetic field. This is shown for the following canonical sectors: i) a conformally invariant generic description where the spinor field and the dreibein are locally rescaled; ii) a specific configuration for the Dirac fermion consistent with its spin, where Weyl symmetry is exchanged by time reparametrizations; iii) the vacuum sector $ψ=0$, which is of interest for perturbation theory. For the latter the analysis is adapted to the case of manifolds with boundary, and the corresponding Dirac brackets together with the centrally extended charge algebra are found. Finally, the $SU(2)$ generalization of the gauge group is briefly treated, yielding analogous conclusions for the degrees of freedom.

We present a self-gravitating, analytic and globally regular Skyrmion solution of the Einstein-Skyrme system with winding number w = 1, in presence of a cosmological constant. The static spacetime metric is the direct product RxS3 and the Skyrmion is the self-gravitating generalization of the static hedgehog solution of Manton and Ruback with unit topological charge. This solution can be promoted to a dynamical one in which the spacetime is a cosmology of the Bianchi type-IX with time-dependent scale and squashing coefficients. Remarkably, the Skyrme equations are still identically satisfied for all values of these parameters. Thus, the complete set of field equations for the Einstein-Skyrme-Lambda system in the topological sector reduces to a pair of coupled, autonomous, nonlinear differential equations for the scale factor and a squashing coefficient. These equations admit analytic bouncing cosmological solutions in which the universe contracts to a minimum non-vanishing size, and then expands. A non-trivial byproduct of this solution is that a minor modification of the construction gives rise to a family of stationary, regular configurations in General Relativity with negative cosmological constant supported by an SU(2) nonlinear sigma model. These solutions represent traversable AdS wormholes with NUT parameter in which the only "exotic matter" required for their construction is a negative cosmological constant.

A Chern--Simons system in $2+1$ dimensions invariant under local Lorentz rotations, $SU(2)$ gauge transformations, and local $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry transformations is proposed. The field content is that of $(2+1)$-gravity plus an $SU(2)$ gauge field, a spin-1/2 fermion charged with respect to $SU(2)$ and a trivial free abelian gauge field. A peculiarity of the model is the absence of gravitini, although it includes gravity and supersymmetry. Likewise, no gauginos are present. All the parameters involved in the system are either protected by gauge invariance or emerge as integration constants. An effective mass and effective cosmological constant emerge by spontaneus breaking of local scaling invariance. The vacuum sector is defined by configurations with locally flat Lorentz and $SU(2)$ connections sporting nontrivial global charges. Three-dimensional Lorentz-flat geometries are spacetimes of locally constant negative --or zero--, Riemann curvature, which include Minkowski space, AdS$_3$, BTZ black holes, and point particles. These solutions admit different numbers of globally defined, covariantly constant spinors and are therefore good candidates for stable ground states. The fermionic sector in this system could describe the dynamics of electrons in graphene in the long wavelength limit near the Dirac points, with the spin degree of freedom of the electrons represented by the $SU(2)$ label. If this is the case, the $SU(2)$ gauge field would produce a spin-spin interaction giving rise to strong correlation of electron pairs.

We propose a generalization of Chiral Gravity, which follows from considering a Chern-Simons action for the spin connection with anti-symmetric contorsion. The theory corresponds to Topologically Massive Gravity at the chiral point non-minimally coupled to an additional scalar mode that gathers the torsion degree of freedom. In this setup, the effective cosmological constant (the inverse of the curvature radius of maximally symmetric solutions) is either negative or zero, and it enters as an integration constant associated to the value of the contorsion at infinity. We explain how this is not in conflict with the Zamolodchikov's $c$-theorem holding in the dual boundary theory. In fact, we conjecture that the theory formulated about three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space is dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory whose right- and left-moving central charges are given by $c_{R}=24k$ and $c_{L}=0$, respectively, being $k$ the level of the Chern-Simons action. We study the classical theory both at the linear and non-linear level. In particular, we show how Chiral Gravity is included as a special sector. In addition, the theory has other sectors, which we explore; we exhibit analytic exact solutions that are not solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity (and, consequently, neither of General Relativity) and still satisfy Brown-Henneaux asymptotically AdS$_{3}$ boundary conditions.

For this model, we find analytic black hole solutions that asymptote to locally AdS spacetime at the boundary. A solution can carry U(1) charge provided the spacetime torsion is non-vanishing. Thus, we analyze the most general configuration consistent with the local AdS isometries in Riemann-Cartan space. The coupling of torsion in the action resembles that of the universal axion of string theory, and it is ultimately due to this field that the theory acquires propagating degrees of freedom. Through a careful analysis of the canonical structure the local degrees of freedom of the theory are identified in the static symmetric sector of phase space.

A gauge theory for a superalgebra that includes an internal gauge (G) and local Lorentz algebras, and that could describe the low energy particle phenomenology is constructed. These two symmetries are connected by fermionic supercharges. The system includes an internal gauge connection 1-form $A$, a spin-1/2 Dirac spinor $ψ$, the Lorentz connection $ω$, and the vielbein $e$. The connection one-form is in the adjoint representation of G, while $ψ$ is in the fundamental. In contrast to standard supergravity, the metric is not a fundamental field and is in the center of the superalgebra: it is not only invariant under the internal gauge group and under Lorentz transformations, but is also invariant under supersymmetry. The features of this theory that mark the difference with standard supersymmetry are: A) The number of fermionic and bosonic states is not necessarily the same; B) There are no superpartners with equal mass, "bosoninos", sleptons and squarks are absent; C) Although this supersymmetry originates in a local gauge theory and gravity is included, there is no gravitino; D) Fermions acquire mass from their coupling to the background or from self-couplings, while bosons remain massless. In odd dimensions, the Chern-Simons form provides an action that is quasi-invariant under the entire superalgebra. In even dimensions, the Yang-Mills form $ < F *F>$ is the only natural option, and the symmetry breaks down to [G x SO(1,D-1)]. In 4D, the construction follows the Townsend - Mac Dowell-Mansouri approach. Due to the absence of osp(4|2)-invariant traces in four dimensions, the resulting Lagrangian is only invariant under [U(1) x SO(3,1)], and includes a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio term. In this case, the Lagrangian depends on a single dimensionful parameter that fixes Newton's constant, the cosmological constant and the NJL coupling.

A coupling between the spacetime geometry and a scalar field involving the Euler four-form can have important consequences in General Relativity. The coupling is a four-dimensional version of the Jackiw-Teitelboim action, in which a scalar couples to the Euler two-form in two dimensions. In this case the first order formalism, in which the vierbein (or the metric) and the spin connection (or the afine connection) are varied independently, is not equivalent to the second order one, in which the geometry is completely determined by the metric. This is because the torsion postulate (T=0) is not valid and one cannot algebraically solve the spin connection from its own field equation. The direct consequence of this obstruction is that the torsion becomes a new source for the metric curvature, and even if the scalar field is very slowly varying over cosmic scales as to have no observable astronomical efects at the galactic scale, it has important dynamical efects that can give rise to a cosmological evolution radically diferent from the standard FRWL model.

The Chern-Simons (CS) form evolved from an obstruction in mathematics into an important object in theoretical physics. In fact, the presence of CS terms in physics is more common than one may think: they seem to play an important role in high Tc superconductivity and in recently discovered topological insulators. In classical physics, the minimal coupling in electromagnetism and to the action for a mechanical system in Hamiltonian form are examples of CS functionals. CS forms are also the natural generalization of the minimal coupling between the electromagnetic field and a point charge when the source is not point-like but an extended fundamental object, a membrane. They are found in relation with anomalies in quantum field theories, and as Lagrangians for gauge fields, including gravity and supergravity. A cursory review of the role of CS forms in gravitation theories is presented at an introductory level.

The path integral approach for a 3D Chern-Simons theory is discussed with a focus on the question of metric independence and BRST-exactness in the light of Gribov ambiguity. Copies of the vacuum satisfying the strong boundary conditions and with trivial winding number are shown to exist. This problem is relevant for Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions as well. Furthermore, it is also shown that there are regular background metrics supporting an infinite number of zero modes of the Abelian Faddeev-Popov operator in the Coulomb gauge. In order to avoid overcounting one could restrict the possible metrics which enter in the gauge fixing but this would imply that, at a quantum level, three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories do depend on the metric.

Degenerate dynamical systems are characterized by symplectic structures whose rank is not constant throughout phase space. Their phase spaces are divided into causally disconnected, nonoverlapping regions such that there are no classical orbits connecting two different regions. Here the question of whether this classical disconnectedness survives quantization is addressed. Our conclusion is that in irreducible degenerate systems --in which the degeneracy cannot be eliminated by redefining variables in the action--, the disconnectedness is maintained in the quantum theory: there is no quantum tunnelling across degeneracy surfaces. This shows that the degeneracy surfaces are boundaries separating distinct physical systems, not only classically, but in the quantum realm as well. The relevance of this feature for gravitation and Chern-Simons theories in higher dimensions cannot be overstated.

Chern-Simons (CS) forms generalize the minimal coupling between gauge potentials and point charges, to sources represented by charged extended objects (branes). The simplest example of such a CS-brane coupling is a domain wall coupled to the electromagnetic CS three-form. This describes a topologically charged interface where the CS form AdA is supported, separating two three-dimensional spatial regions in 3+1 spacetime. Electrodynamics at either side of the brane is described by the same Maxwell's equations, but those two regions have different vacua, characterized by a different value of the θ-parameter multiplying the Pontryagin form F ^ F. The θ-term is the abelian version of the concept introduced by 't Hooft for the resolution of the U(1) problem in QCD. We point out that CS-generalized classical electrodynamics shows new phenomena when two neighboring regions with different θ-vacua are present. These topological effects result from surface effects induced by the boundary and we explore the consequences of such boundary effects for the propagation of the electromagnetic field in Maxwell theory. Several features, including optical and electrostatic/magnetostatic responses, which may be observable in condensed matter systems, like topological insulators, are discussed.

Abstract:
A local supersymmetric action for a (2+1)-dimensional system including gravity, the electromagnetic field and a Dirac spin-1/2 field is presented. A local supersymmetric action for a (2+1)-dimensional system including gravity, the electromagnetic field and a Dirac spin-1/2 field is presented. The action is a Chern-Simons form for a connection of the OSp(2|2) group. All the fields enter as parts of the connection, that transforms in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The system is off-shell invariant under local (gauge) supersymmetry. Although the supersymmetry is locally realized, there is no spin-3/2 gravitino, and is therefore not supergravity. The fields do not necessarily form supersymmetric doublets of equal mass, and moreover, the fermion may acquire mass through the coupling with the background geometry, while the bosons --the U(1) field and the spin connection-- remain massless.

The geometry of spinning codimension-two branes in AdS spacetime is analyzed in three and higher dimensions. The construction of non-extremal solutions is based on identifications in the covering of AdS space by isometries that have fixed points. The discussion focuses on the cases where the parameters of spinning states can be related to the velocity of a boosted static codimension-two brane. The resulting configuration describes a single spinning brane, or a set of intersecting branes, each one produced by an independent identification. The nature of the singularity is also examined, establishing that the AdS curvature acquires one in the form of a Dirac delta distribution. The stability of the branes is studied in the framework of Chern-Simons AdS supergravity. A class of branes, characterized by one free parameter, are shown to be stable when the BPS conditions are satisfied. In 3D, these stable branes are extremal, while in higher dimensions, the BPS branes are not the extremal ones.

We analyse the physical implications of adding a topological density term $θTr(F\wedge F)$ to a gauge theory in a bounded region. In particular, we calculate the Casimir effect on a spherical region and we show that the result is not periodic in $θ$, contrary to what would be expected for a true topological density. The topological nature of the $θ$-term can be restored if an additional boundary term required by the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem is included. Then, the periodicity is trivially restored because the resulting Casimir energy is independent of $θ$. The results of the present work suggest that the observable effects of the $θ$-term could be very small even without assuming $θ$ itself to be small.
