A direct approach to studying the galaxy-halo connection is the analysis of observed groups and clusters of galaxies that trace the underlying dark matter halos, making identifying galaxy clusters and their associated brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) crucial. We test and propose a robust density-based clustering algorithm that outperforms the traditional Friends-of-Friends (FoF) algorithm in the currently available galaxy group/cluster catalogs. Our new approach is a modified version of the Ordering Points To Identify the Clustering Structure (OPTICS) algorithm, which accounts for line-of-sight positional uncertainties due to redshift space distortions by incorporating a scaling factor, and is thereby referred to as sOPTICS. When tested on both a galaxy group catalog based on semi-analytic galaxy formation simulations and observational data, our algorithm demonstrated robustness to outliers and relative insensitivity to hyperparameter choices. In total, we compared the results of eight clustering algorithms. The proposed density-based clustering method, sOPTICS, outperforms FoF in accurately identifying giant galaxy clusters and their associated BCGs in various environments with higher purity and recovery rate, also successfully recovering 115 BCGs out of 118 reliable BCGs from a large galaxy sample.

We then suggest the possibility of a natural connection between the acceleration scale and dark energy within the same paradigm.

Heat flux sensors (HFS) have attracted significant interest for their potential in managing waste heat efficiently. A recently proposed HFS, that works on the basis of the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), offers several advantages in its simple structure leading to easy fabrication, low cost, and reduced thermal resistance. However, enhancing sensitivity through traditional material selection is now challenging due to a small number of materials satisfying the required coexistence of a large transverse Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity. In this study, by utilizing composite structures and optimizing the device geometry, we have achieved a substantial improvement in the sensitivity of an ANE-based HFS. We developed composite structures comprised of a plastic substrate with an uneven surface and three-dimensional (3D) uneven TbCo films, fabricated using nanoimprint techniques and sputtering. This approach resulted in a sensitivity that is approximately four times greater than that observed in previous studies. Importantly, this method is independent of the material properties and can significantly enhance the sensitivity. Our findings could lead to the development of highly sensitive HFS devices and open new avenues for the fabrication of 3D devices.

Iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_3$ is composed of alternate stacking of a superconducting FeAs layer and an insulating vanadium-oxide layer with a perovskite-type structure. Electronic orders stemming from the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of V $3d$ electrons can arise in the vanadium-oxide layer, but such orders have not been confirmed so far. Here, we systematically investigate the electronic state of Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_{3-δ}$ with oxygen deficiency and demonstrate the phase diagram of Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_{3-δ}$ as a function of the $c$-axis lattice parameter, which has turned out to be a suitable measure of the amount of oxygen deficiency. We found a magnetic and structural anomaly at $\sim 100$ K with a thermal hysteresis, which is manifested with the introduction of oxygen deficiency. The presence of orthorhombic distortion was revealed below the temperature at which the anomaly appears, suggestive of V orbital ordering involving the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. It seems that substantial fluctuations associated with the orthorhombic distortion significantly influence the electronic state of the FeAs layer. Our findings indicate that the vanadium-oxide layer plays a significant role in the electronic state of Sr$_2$VFeAsO$_{3-δ}$.

We have investigated the thermoelectric and thermal behaviour of Fe-V-W-Al based thin films prepared using radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique at different base pressures (0.1 ~ 1.0 X 10-2 Pa) and on different substrates (n, p and undoped Si). Interestingly, at lower base pressure, formation of bcc type of Heusler structure was observed in deposited samples, whereas at higher base pressure, we have noted the development of non-Heusler amorphous structure in these samples. Our findings indicates that the moderately oxidized Fe-V-W-Al amorphous thin film deposited on n-Si substrate, possesses large magnitude of absoulte S ~ 1098 microvolt per kelvin near room temperature, which is almost the double the previously reported value for thin films. Additionally, the power factor indicated enormously large values ~ 33.9 milliwatt per meter per kelvin sqaure near 320 K. The thermal conductivity of the amorphous thin film is also found to be 2.75 watt per meter per kelvin, which is quite lower compared to bulk alloys. As a result, the maximum figure of merit is estimated to be extremely high i.e. ~ 3.9 near 320 K, which is among one of the highest reported values so far. The anomalously large value of Seebeck coefficient and power factor has been ascribed to formation of amorphous structure and composite effect of thin film and substrate.

The identity of dark matter has been a mystery in astronomy, cosmology, and particle theory for about a century. Bessho, Ikeda, and Yin (2022), three of the current authors, proposed using the state-of-the-art infrared spectrographs, including WINERED at $6.5$m Magellan Clay telescope and NIRSpec at James Webb Space Telescope, as efficient detectors for the indirect detection of dark matter with the mass around eV by measuring the line photons from the dark matter two body decays. Applying this concept, we have performed spectrographic observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) Leo V and Tucana II using WINERED by utilizing an object-sky-object nodding observation technique for background subtraction. We present the first result from this dark matter search. Employing zero consistent flux data after the sky subtraction, we have established one of the most stringent limits to date on dark matter decaying into line photons in the mass range of $1.8-2.7\,$eV. Our data can also be applied to constrain other spectra of photons from the dSphs.

The recent discovery of ``ultra-hot'' ($P < 1$ day) Neptunes has come as a surprise: some of these planets have managed to retain gaseous envelopes despite being close enough to their host stars to trigger strong photoevaporation and/or Roche lobe overflow. Here, we investigate atmospheric escape in LTT 9779b, an ultra-hot Neptune with a volatile-rich envelope. We observed two transits of this planet using the newly-commissioned WINERED spectrograph ($R\sim68,000$) on the 6.5 m Clay/Magellan II Telescope, aiming to detect an extended upper atmosphere in the He 10830 A triplet. We found no detectable planetary absorption: in a 0.75 A passband centered on the triplet, we set a 2$σ$ upper limit of 0.12% ($δR_p/H < 14$) and a 3$σ$ upper limit of 0.20% ($δR_p/H < 22$). Using a H/He isothermal Parker wind model, we found corresponding 95% and 99.7% upper limits on the planetary mass-loss rate of $\dot{M} < 10^{10.03}$ g s$^{-1}$ and $\dot{M} < 10^{11.11}$ g s$^{-1}$ respectively, smaller than predicted by outflow models even considering the weak stellar XUV emission. The low evaporation rate is plausibly explained by a metal-rich envelope, which would decrease the atmospheric scale height and increase the cooling rate of the outflow. This hypothesis is imminently testable: if metals commonly weaken planetary outflows, then we expect that \textit{JWST} will find high atmospheric metallicities for small planets that have evaded detection in He 10830 A.

We compared the molecular clouds in the western part of SS 433 with near-ultraviolet radiation data obtained from GALEX. Near-ultraviolet radiation is prominently confirmed toward only N4, while no near-ultraviolet radiation is detected toward N1, N2, and N3. The radiative region of near-ultraviolet radiation is nearly the same as the CO-emitting region in N4, and does not extend beyond the jet seen in X-ray radiation. Near-ultraviolet radiation cannot be explained solely by broadband continuous radiation and may originate from line emissions. The intensity of near-ultraviolet radiation exhibits an anti-correlation with that of 13CO(J=3-2) emission. This anti-correlation, along with strong far-infrared radiation in the region with weaker near-ultraviolet radiation intensity compared to its surroundings, suggests that near-ultraviolet radiation originates from behind the molecular cloud, heating up the interstellar dust in N4. Subsequently, the dust in N4 re-radiates in the far-infrared band. In the same region, a high peak T_MB ratio of 12CO(J=3-2)/12CO(J=1-0) of ~0.9, and a high kinetic temperature of T_k ~56 K in the molecular cloud indicate that CO molecules are highly excited, and the molecular cloud is heated through photoelectric heating. This heating results from electrons released due to the photoelectric effect caused by the phenomenon where interstellar dust absorbs near-ultraviolet radiation. In terms of the timescale of near-ultraviolet radiation originating from line emissions, near-ultraviolet radiation towards N4 cannot be explained by the shock of the blast wave from a supernova that created W 50. These findings also suggest that N4 directly interacts with the jet from SS 433. As a result of this direct interaction, near-ultraviolet radiation is emitted from an interacting layer between the jet and N4.

Understanding how galaxies quench their star formation is crucial for studies of galaxy evolution. Quenching is related to the cold gas decrease. In the first paper we showed that the dust removal timescale in early-type galaxies (ETGs) is about 2.5 Gyr. Here we present carbon monoxide (CO) and 21 cm hydrogen (H I) line observations of these galaxies and measure the timescale of removal of the cold interstellar medium (ISM). We find that all the cold ISM components (dust, molecular and atomic gas) decline at similar rates. This allows us to rule out a wide range of potential ISM removal mechanisms (including starburst-driven outflows, astration, a decline in the number of asymptotic giant branch stars), and artificial effects like stellar mass-age correlation, environmental influence, mergers, and selection bias, leaving ionization by evolved low-mass stars and ionization/outflows by supernovae Type Ia or active galactic nuclei as viable mechanisms. We also provide evidence for an internal origin of the detected ISM. Moreover, we find that the quenching of star formation in these galaxies cannot be explained by a reduction in gas amount alone, because the star formation rates (SFRs) decrease faster (on a timescale of about 1.8 Gyr) than the amount of cold gas. Furthermore, the star formation efficiency of the ETGs (SFE = SFR/MH2) is lower than that of star-forming galaxies, whereas their gas mass fractions (fH2 = MH2/M*) are normal. This may be explained by the stabilization of gas against fragmentation, for example due to morphological quenching, turbulence, or magnetic fields.

Context. The Galactic centre is hazardous for stellar clusters because of the strong tidal force. Supposedly, many clusters were destroyed and contributed stars to the crowded stellar field of the bulge and the nuclear stellar cluster. However, it is hard to develop a realistic model to predict the long-term evolution of the complex inner Galaxy, and observing surviving clusters in the central region would provide crucial insights into destruction processes. Aims. Among hitherto-known Galactic globular clusters, VVV CL002 is the closest to the centre, 0.4 kpc, but has a very high transverse velocity, 400 km s$^{-1}$. The nature of this cluster and its impact on Galactic astronomy need to be addressed with spectroscopic follow-up. Methods. Here we report the first measurements of its radial velocity and chemical abundance based on near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy. Results. We found that this cluster has a counterrotating orbit constrained within 1.0\,kpc of the centre, as close as 0.2 kpc at the perigalacticon, confirming that the cluster is not a passerby from the halo but a genuine survivor enduring the harsh conditions of the Galactic mill's tidal forces. In addition, its metallicity and $α$ abundance ([$α$/Fe] $\simeq +0.4$ and [Fe/H]$=-0.54$) are similar to some globular clusters in the bulge. Recent studies suggest that stars with such $α$-enhanced stars were more common at 3 - 6 kpc from the centre around 10 Gyrs ago. Conclusions. We infer that VVV CL002 was formed outside but is currently falling down to the centre, exhibiting a real-time event that must have occurred to many clusters a long time ago.

To understand the fundamental parameters of galaxy evolution, we investigated the minimum set of parameters that explain the observed galaxy spectra in the local Universe. We identified four latent variables that efficiently represent the diversity of high-dimensional galaxy spectral energy distributions (SEDs) observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Additionally, we constructed meaningful latent representation using conditional variational autoencoders trained with different permutations of galaxy physical properties, which helped us quantify the information that these traditionally used properties have on the reconstruction of galaxy spectra. The four parameters suggest a view that complex SED population models with a very large number of parameters will be difficult to constrain even with spectroscopic galaxy data. Through an Explainable AI (XAI) method, we found that the region below 5000\textupÅ and prominent emission lines ([O II], [O III], and H$α$) are particularly informative for predicting the latent variables. Our findings suggest that these latent variables provide a more efficient and fundamental representation of galaxy spectra than conventionally considered galaxy physical properties.

Nambu Quantum Mechanics, proposed in Phys. Lett. B536, 305 (2002), is a deformation of canonical Quantum Mechanics in which the manifold over which the "phase" of an energy eigenstate time evolves is modified. This generalization affects oscillation and interference phenomena through the introduction of two deformation parameters that quantify the extent of deviation from canonical Quantum Mechanics. In this paper, we constrain these parameters utilizing atmospheric neutrino oscillation data, and $B^0$-$\overline{B^0}$ oscillation data from Belle. Surprisingly, the bound from atmospheric neutrinos is stronger than the bound from Belle. Various features of Nambu Quantum Mechanics are also discussed.

We take a deep learning-based approach for galaxy merger identification in Subaru HSC-SSP, specifically through the use of deep representation learning and fine-tuning, with the aim of creating a pure and complete merger sample within the HSC-SSP survey. We can use this merger sample to conduct studies on how mergers affect galaxy evolution. We use Zoobot, a deep learning representation learning model pre-trained on citizen science votes on Galaxy Zoo DeCALS images. We fine-tune Zoobot for the purpose of merger classification of images of SDSS and GAMA galaxies in HSC-SSP PDR 3. Fine-tuning is done using 1200 synthetic HSC-SSP images of galaxies from the TNG simulation. We then find merger probabilities on observed HSC images using the fine-tuned model. Using our merger probabilities, we examine the relationship between merger activity and environment. We find that our fine-tuned model returns an accuracy on the synthetic validation data of 76%. This number is comparable to those of previous studies where convolutional neural networks were trained with simulation images, but with our work requiring a far smaller number of training samples. For our synthetic data, our model is able to achieve completeness and precision values of 80%. In addition, our model is able to correctly classify both mergers and non-mergers of diverse morphologies and structures, including those at various stages and mass ratios, while distinguishing between projections and merger pairs. For the relation between galaxy mergers and environment, we find two distinct trends. Using stellar mass overdensity estimates for TNG simulations and observations using SDSS and GAMA, we find that galaxies with higher merger scores favor lower density environments on scales of 0.5 to 8 h^-1 Mpc. However, below these scales in the simulations, we find that galaxies with higher merger scores favor higher density environments.

We aim to understand what drives the IRX-βdust attenuation relation at intermediate redshift (0.5 < z < 0.8) in star-forming galaxies. We investigate the role of various galaxy properties in shaping this observed relation. We use robust [O ii] λ3727, [O iii] λλ4959, 5007, and Hβline detections of our statistical sample of 1049 galaxies to estimate the gas-phase metallicities. We derive key physical properties that are necessary to study galaxy evolution, such as the stellar masses and the star formation rates, using the spectral energy distribution fitting tool CIGALE. Equivalently, we study the effect of galaxy morphology (mainly the Sérsic index n and galaxy inclination) on the observed IRX-βscatter. We also investigate the role of the environment in shaping dust attenuation in our sample. We find a strong correlation of the IRX-βrelation on gas-phase metallicity in our sample, and also strong correlation with galaxy compactness characterized by the Sérsic indexes. Correlations are also seen with stellar masses, specific star formation rates and the stellar ages of our sources. Metallicity strongly correlates with the IRX-βscatter, this also results from the older stars and higher masses at higher beta values. Galaxies with higher metallicities show higher IRX and higher beta values. The correlation with specific dust mass strongly shifts the galaxies away from the IRX-βrelation towards lower \b{eta} values. We find that more compact galaxies witness a larger amount of attenuation than less compact galaxies. There is a subtle variation in the dust attenuation scatter between edge-on and face-on galaxies, but the difference is not statistically significant. Galaxy environments do not significantly affect dust attenuation in our sample of star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshift.

The mean free path of ionizing photons, $λ_{\rm mfp}$, is a critical parameter for modeling the intergalactic medium (IGM) both during and after reionization. We present direct measurements of $λ_{\rm mfp}$ from QSO spectra over the redshift range $5<z<6$, including the first measurements at $z\simeq5.3$ and 5.6. Our sample includes data from the XQR-30 VLT large program, as well as new Keck/ESI observations of QSOs near $z \sim 5.5$, for which we also acquire new [C II] 158$μ$m redshifts with ALMA. By measuring the Lyman continuum transmission profile in stacked QSO spectra, we find $λ_{\rm mfp} = 9.33_{-1.80}^{+2.06}$, $5.40_{-1.40}^{+1.47}$, $3.31_{-1.34}^{+2.74}$, and $0.81_{-0.48}^{+0.73}$ pMpc at $z=5.08$, 5.31, 5.65, and 5.93, respectively. Our results demonstrate that $λ_{\rm mfp}$ increases steadily and rapidly with time over $5<z<6$. Notably, we find that $λ_{\rm mfp}$ deviates significantly from predictions based on a fully ionized and relaxed IGM as late as $z=5.3$. By comparing our results to model predictions and indirect $λ_{\rm mfp}$ constraints based on IGM Ly$α$ opacity, we find that the $λ_{\rm mfp}$ evolution is consistent with scenarios wherein the IGM is still undergoing reionization and/or retains large fluctuations in the ionizing UV background well below redshift six.

Metallicity gradients refer to the sloped radial profile of metallicities of gas and stars and are commonly seen in disk galaxies. A well-defined metallicity gradient of the Galactic disk is observed particularly well with classical Cepheids, which are good stellar tracers thanks to their period-luminosity relation allowing precise distance estimation and other advantages. However, the measurement of the inner-disk gradient has been impeded by the incompleteness of previous samples of Cepheids and limitations of optical spectroscopy in observing highly reddened objects. Here we report the metallicities of 16 Cepheids measured with high-resolution spectra in the near-infrared YJ bands. These Cepheids are located at 3-5.6 kpc in the Galactocentric distance, R(GC), and reveal the metallicity gradient in this range for the first time. Their metallicities are mostly between 0.1 and 0.3 dex in [Fe/H] and more or less follow the extrapolation of the metallicity gradient found in the outer part, R(GC) larger than 6.5 kpc. The gradient in the inner disk may be shallower or even flat, but the small sample does not allow to determine the slope precisely. More extensive spectroscopic observations would also be necessary for studying minor populations, if any, with higher or lower metallicities that were reported in previous literature. In addition, three-dimensional velocities of our inner-disk Cepheids show the kinematic pattern that indicates non-circular orbits caused by the Galactic bar, which is consistent with the patterns reported in recent studies on high-mass star-forming regions and red giant branch stars.

We simultaneously measured the spatially-resolved CO-to-H$_{2}$ conversion factor ($α_\mathrm{CO}$) and dust-to-gas ratio (DGR) in nearby galaxies on a kiloparsec scale. In this study, we used $^{12}$CO($J=1-0$) data obtained by the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope with HI and dust mass surface densities. We obtained the values of global $α_\mathrm{CO}$ and DGR in 22 nearby spiral galaxies, with averages of $2.66 \pm 1.36\ M_\odot\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}\ (\mathrm{K\ km\ s^{-1}})^{-1}$ and $0.0052 \pm 0.0026$, respectively. Furthermore, the radial variations of $α_\mathrm{CO}$ and DGR in four barred spiral galaxies (IC 342, NGC 3627, NGC 5236, and NGC 6946) were obtained by dividing them into the inner and outer regions with a boundary of $0.2R_{25}$, where $R_{25}$ is the isophotal radius at 25 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the $B$ band. The averages of $α_\mathrm{CO}$ and DGR in the inner region ($\leq 0.2R_{25}$) are $0.36 \pm 0.08\ M_\odot\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}\ (\mathrm{K\ km\ s^{-1}})^{-1}$ and $0.0199 \pm 0.0058$, while those in the outer region ($> 0.2R_{25}$) are $1.49 \pm 0.76\ M_\odot\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}\ (\mathrm{K\ km\ s^{-1}})^{-1}$ and $0.0084 \pm 0.0037$, respectively. The value of $α_\mathrm{CO}$ in the outer region is 2.3 to 5.3 times larger than that of the inner region. When separated into the inner and outer regions, we find that $α_\mathrm{CO}$ and DGR correlate with the metallicity and the star formation rate surface density. The value of $α_\mathrm{CO}$ derived in this study tends to be smaller than those obtained in previous studies for the Milky Way and nearby star-forming galaxies. This fact can be attributed to our measurements being biased toward the inner region; we measured $α_\mathrm{CO}$ at 0.85 and 0.76 times smaller in radius than the previous works for nearby star-forming galaxies and the Milky Way, respectively.

MASTER OT J004527.52+503213.8 (hereafter MASTER J004527) is a dwarf nova discovered by the MASTER project in 2013. At 18:20 UTC on 24 October 2020, brightening of this object was reported to vsnet-alert (24843 by Denisenko). This was the second report of a superoutburst after its discovery. Photometric observations were made using the 23.5-cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope at Okayama University of Science observatory soon after the alert through 4 November 2020. In this work, we present the photometric data from our observation, and the analysis of the light curves of MASTER J004527 during the 2020 outburst. We propose a method to determine the period of superhumps by polynomial fitting, which can be applied to a light curve with many missing data. In addition to our own data, we incorporate other all sky survey data of the outburst to better understand the properties of the superhumps. Based on our observations, we conclude that MASTER J004527 is an SU UMa-type dwarf nova, since no early superhumps occurred.

We conduct deep optical integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) for the low-mass EMPGs with the medium high resolution ($R=7500$) grism of the 8m-Subaru FOCAS IFU instrument by the EMPRESS 3D survey, and investigate H$α$ emission of the EMPGs. Exploiting the resolution high enough for the low-mass galaxies, we derive gas dynamics with the H$α$ lines by the fitting of 3-dimensional disk models. We obtain an average maximum rotation velocity ($v_\mathrm{rot}$) of $15\pm3~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ and an average intrinsic velocity dispersion ($σ_0$) of $27\pm10~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for 15 spatially resolved EMPGs out of the 33 EMPGs, and find that all of the 15 EMPGs have $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0<1$ suggesting dispersion dominated systems. There is a clear decreasing trend of $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ with the decreasing stellar mass and metallicity. We derive the gas mass fraction ($f_\mathrm{gas}$) for all of the 33 EMPGs, and find no clear dependence on stellar mass and metallicity. These $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ and $f_\mathrm{gas}$ trends should be compared with young high-$z$ galaxies observed by the forthcoming JWST IFS programs to understand the physical origins of the EMPGs in the local universe.

We present the results of 300 pc resolution ALMA imaging of the [OIII] 88 $μ$m line and dust continuum emission from a $z = 8.312$ Lyman break galaxy MACS0416_Y1. The velocity-integrated [OIII] emission has three peaks which are likely associated with three young stellar clumps of MACS0416_Y1, while the channel map shows a complicated velocity structure with little indication of a global velocity gradient unlike what was found in [CII] 158 $μ$m at a larger scale, suggesting random bulk motion of ionized gas clouds inside the galaxy. In contrast, dust emission appears as two individual clumps apparently separating or bridging the [OIII]/stellar clumps. The cross correlation coefficient between dust and ultraviolet-related emission (i.e., [OIII] and ultraviolet continuum) is unity on a galactic scale, while it drops at < 1 kpc, suggesting well mixed geometry of multi-phase interstellar media on sub-kpc scales. If the cutoff scale characterizes different stages of star formation, the cutoff scale can be explained by gravitational instability of turbulent gas. We also report on a kpc-scale off-center cavity embedded in the dust continuum image. This could be a superbubble producing galactic-scale outflows, since the energy injection from the 4 Myr starburst suggested by a spectral energy distribution analysis is large enough to push the surrounding media creating a kpc-scale cavity.

We present 850um imaging of the XMM-LSS field observed for 170 hours as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope SCUBA-2 Large eXtragalactic Survey (S2LXS). S2LXS XMM-LSS maps an area of 9 square degrees, reaching a moderate depth of 1-sigma ~ 4 mJy/beam. This is the largest contiguous area of extragalactic sky mapped by JCMT at 850um to date. The wide area of the S2LXS XMM-LSS survey allows us to probe the ultra-bright (S_850um > 15 mJy), yet rare submillimetre population. We present the S2LXS XMM-LSS catalogue, which comprises 40 sources detected at >5-sigma significance, with deboosted flux densities in the range of 7 mJy to 48 mJy. We robustly measure the bright-end of the 850um number counts at flux densities >7 mJy, reducing the Poisson errors compared to existing measurements. The S2LXS XMM-LSS observed number counts show the characteristic upturn at bright fluxes, expected to be motivated by local sources of submillimetre emission and high-redshift strongly lensed galaxies. We find that the observed 850um number counts are best reproduced by model predictions that include either strong lensing or source blending from a 15 arcsec beam, indicating that both may make an important contribution to the observed over-abundance of bright single dish 850um selected sources. We make the S2LXS XMM-LSS 850um map and >5-sigma catalogue presented here publicly available.

We investigate the unusual phase transitions in SrRuO$_{3}$ and Sr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$O$_{3}$ (x=0,0.05 and 0.1) employing x-ray diffraction, resistivity, magnetic studies and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Our results show the compounds undergo crossover from $itinerant$ ferromagnetism to $localised$ ferromagnetism. The combined studies suggests Ru and Cr to be in 4+ valence state. A Griffith phase and an enhancement in Curie temperature (Tc) from 38 K to 107 K is observed with Cr doping. A shift in the chemical potential towards the valence band is observed with Cr doping. In the metallic samples, interestingly, a direct link between the resistivity and orthorhombic strain is observed. Detailed studies in this direction will be helpful to understand the nature of interactions and hence manoeuvre its properties. In the non metallic samples, the resistivity is mainly governed by disorder and electron-electron correlation effects. The value of the resistivity for the 5% Cr doped sample suggests semi metallic behaviour. Understanding its nature in detail using electron spectroscopic techniques could unravel the possibility of its utility in high mobility transistors at room temperature and its combined property with ferromagnetism will be helpful in making spintronic devices.

The achieved beam size and sensitivity are $15''\times8''$ and $\sim12$~mJy~beam$^{-1}$ at the velocity resolution of $\sim10$~km~s$^{-1}$, respectively. We study the cold-gas (molecular- and atomic-gas) properties of 38 subsamples with $M_{\rm star}>10^9$~M$_\odot$ combined with literature HI data. We find that: (1) the low star-formation (SF) activity in the Fornax galaxies is caused by the decrease in the cold-gas mass fraction with respect to stellar mass (hereafter, gas fraction) rather than the decrease of the SF efficiency from the cold gas; (2) the atomic-gas fraction is more heavily reduced than the molecular-gas fraction of such galaxies with low SF activity. A comparison between the cold-gas properties of the Fornax galaxies and their environmental properties suggests that the atomic gas is stripped tidally and by the ram pressure, which leads to the molecular gas depletion with an aid of the strangulation and consequently SF quenching. Pre-processes in the group environment would also play a role in reducing cold-gas reservoirs in some Fornax galaxies.

We report the discovery of a two-dimensional Galaxy Manifold within the multi-dimensional luminosity space of local galaxies. The multi-dimensional luminosity space is constructed using 11 bands that span from far ultraviolet to near-infrared for redshift < 0.1 galaxies observed with GALEX, SDSS, and UKIDSS. The two latent parameters are sufficient to express 93.2% of the variance in the galaxy sample, suggesting that this Galaxy Manifold is one of the most efficient representations of galaxies. The transformation between the observed luminosities and the manifold parameters as an analytic mapping is provided. The manifold representation provides accurate (85%) morphological classifications with a simple linear boundary, and galaxy properties can be estimated with minimal scatter (0.12 dex and 0.04 dex for star formation rate and stellar mass, respectively) by calibrating with the two-dimensional manifold location. Under the assumption that the manifold expresses the possible parameter space of galaxies, the evolution on the manifold is considered. We find that constant and exponentially decreasing star formation histories form almost orthogonal modes of evolution on the manifold. Through these simple models, we understand that the two modes are closely related to gas content, which suggests the close relationship of the manifold to gas accretion. Without assuming a star formation history, a gas-regulated model reproduces an exponentially declining star formation history with a timescale of $\sim$1.2 Gyrs on the manifold. Lastly, the found manifold suggests a paradigm where galaxies are characterized by their mass/scale and specific SFR, which agrees with previous studies of dimensionality reduction.

We propose a regularization-based deblurring method that works efficiently for galaxy images. The spatial resolution of a ground-based telescope is generally limited by seeing conditions and much worse than space-based telescopes. This circumstance has generated considerable research interest in restoration of spatial resolution. Since image deblurring is a typical inverse problem and often ill-posed, solutions tend to be unstable. To obtain a stable solution, much research has adopted regularization-based methods for image deblurring, but the regularization term is not necessarily appropriate for galaxy images. Although galaxies have an exponential or Sersic profile, the conventional regularization assumes the image profiles to behave linear in space. The significant deviation between the assumption and real situation leads to blurring the images and smoothing out the detailed structures. Clearly, regularization on logarithmic, i.e. magnitude domain, should provide a more appropriate assumption, which we explore in this study. We formulate a problem of deblurring galaxy images by an objective function with a Tikhonov regularization term on magnitude domain. We introduce an iterative algorithm minimizing the objective function with a primal-dual splitting method. We investigate the feasibility of the proposed method using simulation and observation images. In the simulation, we blur galaxy images with a realistic point spread function and add both Gaussian and Poisson noises. For the evaluation with the observed images, we use galaxy images taken by the Subaru HSC-SSP. Both of these evaluations show that our method successfully recovers the spatial resolution of the images and significantly outperforms the conventional methods. The code is publicly available from the Github ( https://github.com/kzmurata-astro/PSFdeconv_amag ).

We study spatially resolved scaling relations among stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. In a preceding paper Abdurro'uf et al. (2022), we have derived spatially resolved properties of the stellar population and dust by panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using piXedfit. Now, we investigate resolved star formation ($Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$--$Σ_{\rm SFR}$--$Σ_{*}$) and dust scaling relations. While the relations with all sub-galactic regions of the galaxies are reasonably tight ($σ\lesssim 0.3$ dex), we find that most of the scaling relations exhibit galaxy-to-galaxy variations in normalization and shape. Only two relations of $Σ_{\rm dust}$--$Σ_{\rm gas}$ and $Σ_{\rm dust}$--$Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$ do not show noticeable galaxy-to-galaxy variations among our sample galaxies. We further investigate correlations among the scaling relations. We find significant correlations among the normalization of the $Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$--$Σ_{\rm SFR}$--$Σ_{*}$ relations, which suggest that galaxies with higher levels of resolved $\text{H}_{2}$ fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$) tend to have higher levels of resolved star formation efficiency (SFE) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). We also observe that galaxies with higher levels of resolved dust-to-stellar mass ratios tend to have higher levels of resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$. Moreover, we find that galaxies with higher global sSFR and less compact morphology tend to have higher levels of the resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$, which can explain the variations in the normalization of the $Σ_{\rm H_{2}}$--$Σ_{\rm SFR}$--$Σ_{*}$ relationships. Overall, we observe indications of the contributions of both global and local factors in governing the star formation process in galaxies.

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$α$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$α$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($σ_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$α$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$.

The spectral energy distribution (SED) of galaxies provides fundamental information on the related physical processes. However, the SED is significantly affected by dust in its interstellar medium. Dust is mainly produced by asymptotic giant branch stars and Type II supernovae. In addition, the dust mass increases through the metal accretion, and the grain size changes by the collisions between the grains. The contribution of each process and the extinction depend on the size distribution. Therefore, the SED model should treat the evolution of the dust mass and size distribution. In spite of the importance of dust evolution, many previous SED models have not considered the evolution of the total mass and size distribution in a physically consistent manner. In this work, we constructed a new radiative transfer SED model, based on our dust evolution model consistent with the chemical evolution. To reduce the computational cost, we adopted the mega-grain and the one-dimensional plane parallel galaxy approximation. As a fiducial case, we calculated Milky Way-like galaxy SEDs at various ages under the closed-box model. We found that a galaxy at the age of 100~Myr does not produce small grains such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. After 1~Gyr, we observed a drastic increase of infrared emission and attenuation caused by a rapid increase of dust mass. This phenomenon can be treated appropriately for the first time by our new model. This model can be used for the SED fitting to a galaxy at any stage of evolution.

Unlocking the mystery of the strange metal state has become the focal point of high T$_{c}$ research, not because of its importance for superconductivity, but because it appears to represent a truly novel phase of matter dubbed `quantum supreme matter'. Detected originally through high magnetic field, transport experiments, signatures of this phase have now been uncovered with a variety of probes. Our high resolution optical data of the low T$_{c}$ cuprate superconductor, Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_{2-y}$La$_{y}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ allows us to probe this phase over a large energy and temperature window. We demonstrate that the optical signatures of the strange metal phase persist throughout the phase diagram. The strange metal signatures in the optical conductivity are two-fold, (i): a low energy Drude response with Drude width on the order of temperature and (ii): a high energy conformal tail with doping dependent power-law exponent. While the Drude weight evolves monotonously throughout the entire doping range studied, the spectral weight contained in the high energy conformal tail appears to be doping and temperature independent. Our analysis further shows that the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity is completely determined by the Drude parameters. Our results indicate that there is no critical doping level inside the superconducting dome where the carrier density starts to change drastically and that the previously observed 'return to normalcy' is a consequence of the increasing importance of the Drude component relative to the conformal tail with doping. Importantly, both the doping and temperature dependence of the resistivity are largely determined by the Drude width.

Over the last three decades, plasmonics using metallic nanostructures has become central to nanophotonics research. Recently, its targets have been extended to nonlinear optical phenomena. In a nonlinear regime, quantum mechanical effects, as exemplified by electron spill-out on the surface of nanostructures, significantly influence the optical response. Quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) is a promising basis for the analysis of nonlinear optical responses involving such quantum mechanical effects. Herein, QHT was applied to calculate the third-order optical nonlinearity of a spherical metallic nanostructure. The results demonstrate how electron spill-out strongly affects plasmon resonance and third-order optical nonlinearity.

We investigate the correlation between the integrated low-frequency and infrared (IR) emissions of star-forming galaxies extracted from the {\sl Herschel} Reference Survey. By taking advantage of the GaLactic Extragalactic All-sky MWA (GLEAM) survey operated by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) we examine how this correlation varies at a function of frequency across the 20 GLEAM narrow bands at $72\mbox{--}231\; [\mbox{MHz}]$. These examinations are important for ensuring the reliability of the radio luminosity as a SFR indicator. In this study, we focus on 18 star-forming galaxies whose radio emission is detected by the GLEAM survey. These galaxies show that a single power-law is sufficient to characterise the far-infrared-to-radio correlation across the GLEAM frequency bands and up to $1.5\; [\mbox{GHz}]$. Thus, the radio continuum in this wavelength range can serve as a good dust extinction-free SFR estimator. This is particularly important for future investigation of the cosmic SFR independently from other estimators, since the radio continuum can be detected from $z=0$ to high redshifts ($z \sim 5\mbox{--}10$) in a coherent manner.

The heat-shielding properties of random metasurface, composed of spherical or spheroidal nanoparticles with random displacements and/or random deformation, were theoretically investigated using the finite difference time domain method. The effective coverage was defined using the total area of nanoparticles in the metasurface, and the robustness of the near-infrared light reflection against randomness was investigated. When the effective coverage was high, the near-infrared light reflection was reduced by at least 20% in both nanoparticle arrangement and shape randomness compared to the hexagonal close-packed perfect metasurface. In contrast, when effective coverage was low, the randomness of the nanoparticle arrangement had almost no effect on the near-infrared light reflection. Furthermore, the near-infrared light reflection performance was improved by the randomness of the nanoparticle shape.

Here we present deep Subaru NIR spectroscopy for 10 EMPGs. Combining the existing optical data, He/H values of 5 out of the 10 EMPGs are reliably derived by the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Adding the existing 3 EMPGs and 51 moderately metal-poor ($0.1-0.4 Z_\odot$) galaxies with reliable He/H estimates, we obtain $Y_\mathrm{P}=0.2370^{+0.0034}_{-0.0033}$ by linear regression in the $\mathrm{(He/H)}-\mathrm{(O/H)}$ plane, where we increase the number of EMPGs from 3 to 8 anchoring He/H of the most metal-poor gas in galaxies. Although our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ measurement and previous measurements are consistent, our result is slightly ($\sim 1σ$) smaller due to our EMPGs. With our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and the existing primordial deuterium $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurement, we constrain the effective number of neutrino species $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and the baryon-to-photon ratio $η$ showing $\gtrsim 1-2σ$ tensions with the Standard Model and Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Motivated by the tensions, we allow the degeneracy parameter of electron-neutrino $ξ_e$ to vary as well as $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $η$. We obtain $ξ_e = 0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, $N_\mathrm{eff}=3.11^{+0.34}_{-0.31}$, and $η\times10^{10}=6.08^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ from the $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurements with a prior of $η$ taken from Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Our constraints suggest a lepton asymmetry and allow for a high value of $N_\mathrm{eff}$ within the $1σ$ level, which could mitigate the Hubble tension.

It has long been recognized that the key to unlocking the mystery of cuprate high-Tc superconductivity lies in understanding the anomalous normal state from which pairs form and condense. While many of its defining properties have been identified, they are often considered either at a singular doping level or as an isolated phenomenon as a function of doping. As a result, their relation to each other and to the pseudogap (PG), strange metal (SM) and non-superconducting (non-SC) regimes that define the cuprate phase diagram has yet to be elucidated. Here, we report a high-field in-plane MR study on several cuprate families spanning all 3 regimes that reveal a complex yet nonetheless systematic evolution of the form of the MR, with each regime possessing its own distinct scaling behavior. In the PG regime, the MR exhibits pure H/T^2 scaling at low fields and H-linearity at the highest field strengths. While the H-linearity persists inside the SM regime, the scaling changes abruptly to H/T. The size of the H-linear slope, meanwhile, is found to be correlated with both the T-linear resistivity coefficient and Tc, strengthening the characterization of the SM regime as a quantum critical phase. We interpret the omnipresence of H-linear MR across both regimes as a signature of highly anisotropic, possibly discontinuous features on the Fermi surface. Finally, within the non-SC, Fermi-liquid regime, we observe a recovery of conventional Kohler scaling. This comprehensive study establishes the distinct nature of the magnetotransport within each regime and identifies power-law scaling of the normal state MR as a defining feature of SC hole-doped cuprates. The incompatibility of such power-law scaling with any known variant of Boltzmann transport theory motivates the quest for an altogether new theoretical framework, one in which the MR is entirely decoupled from elastic impurity scattering.

Traditionally, such a situation is regarded as ill-posed, and there was no choice but to throw away most of the information in data dimension to let $d < n$. The data with $n \ll d$ is referred to as high-dimensional low sample size (HDLSS). {}To deal with HDLSS problems, a method called high-dimensional statistics has been developed rapidly in the last decade. In this work, we first introduce the high-dimensional statistical analysis to the astronomical community. We apply two representative methods in the high-dimensional statistical analysis methods, the noise-reduction principal component analysis (NRPCA) and regularized principal component analysis (RPCA), to a spectroscopic map of a nearby archetype starburst galaxy NGC 253 taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). The ALMA map is a typical HDLSS dataset. First we analyzed the original data including the Doppler shift due to the systemic rotation. The high-dimensional PCA could describe the spatial structure of the rotation precisely. We then applied to the Doppler-shift corrected data to analyze more subtle spectral features. The NRPCA and RPCA could quantify the very complicated characteristics of the ALMA spectra. Particularly, we could extract the information of the global outflow from the center of NGC 253. This method can also be applied not only to spectroscopic survey data, but also any type of data with small sample size and large dimension.

We investigate the tunability of the structural, electronic and magneto transport properties of polycrystalline Sr2IrO4 sample. The extent of bifurcation of the magnetisation curves during the field cooled and zero field cooled cycles establishes that the magnetic anisotropy in the as-prepared sample is more as compared to the vacuum annealed one. Based on the behaviours of the structural parameters and the magnetic studies, our results show that the canted AFM structure is stabilised in a larger temperature range in the case of the annealed sample as compared to the as prepared one. At low temperatures, for both the samples, a phase, possibly of glassy nature competes with the canted AFM phase. The temperature extent to which both these phases co-exist for the as-prepared and the annealed one is around 115K an 70K, respectively. The transport studies reveal that for both the samples, in the high temperature region of study, the conduction mechanism is governed by the Arrhenius model. In the intermediate temperature range, variable range hopping(VRH) and Arrhenius models govern the transport in the as-prepared and the annealed one, respectively. At low temperatures, the conduction mechanism occurs through Efros-Shklovskii-VRH and VRH mechanisms for the as-prepared and the annealed samples, respectively. The magneto resistance measurements indicate higher negative magneto resistance in the annealed sample at all temperatures. The field dependence of magneto resistance at 10K suggests a co-existing glassy magnetic phase along with the canted antiferromagnetic structure in the as prepared sample and a suppression of this glassy magnetic phase in the annealed sample. The combined analyses of all the results highlight the role of disorder for the magnetic and trasnport properties of this compound.

The anomalous strange metal phase found in high-$T_c$ cuprates does not follow the conventional condensed-matter principles enshrined in the Fermi liquid and presents a great challenge for theory. Highly precise experimental determination of the electronic self-energy can provide a test bed for theoretical models of strange metals, and angle-resolved photoemission can provide this as a function of frequency, momentum, temperature and doping. Here we show that constant energy cuts through the nodal spectral function in (Pb,Bi)$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ have a non-Lorentzian lineshape, meaning the nodal self-energy is $k$ dependent. We show that the experimental data are captured remarkably well by a power law with a $k$-dependent scaling exponent smoothly evolving with doping, a description that emerges naturally from AdS/CFT-based semi-holography. This puts a spotlight on holographic methods for the quantitative modelling of strongly interacting quantum materials like the cuprate strange metals.

Aims: Interacting galaxies show a metallicity dilution compared to isolated galaxies of similar masses in the mass-metallicity space at the global scale. We investigate the spatially resolved mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxy pairs in the SDSS-MaNGA survey to confirm that the local relation between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity is consistent with the MZR at the global scale. Methods: We investigate the relationship between the stellar mass surface density and the metallicity abundance, 12+log (O/H), for star-forming spaxels belonging to 298 galaxy pairs identified using visual and kinematic indicators in the SDSS-MaNGA survey. We also investigate if a)the location of a spaxel relative to the galaxy centre and b)the galaxy pair separation have any effect on the local MZR. Results: We find that the correlation between mass and metallicity holds for interacting galaxies at the local level. However, we find two peaks in spaxel distribution, one peak with enriched metallicity and the other with diluted metallicity. We find that the spaxels belonging to the galaxy central regions (i.e. at lower R/Reff) are concentrated close to the two peaks. We also find that the metallicity-diluted spaxels belong to galaxy pairs with closer projected separations and that spaxels with enriched metallicity belong to galaxy pairs with greater projected separations. Conclusions: We find two discrete peaks in the spatially resolved MZR for star-forming spaxels that belong to galaxy pairs. The peaks are likely related to the galaxy projected separation or the stage of the interaction process of a galaxy pair.

We analyzed the evolution of 3GHz luminosity function of radio selected galaxies through cosmic time, up to about 1 Gyr after Big Bang, with making use of the VLA-COSMOS3GHz large project. We estimated the luminosity function for SFGs and AGNs in the VLA-COSMOS field respectively with two independent methods, the non-parametric C-method for accuracy to avoid the effect of cosmic variance and parametric MCMC method assuming pure luminosity evolution. We obtained pure luminosity evolution parameter as L*=(1+z)(3.36-0.31)z for SFG and L* = (1+z)(2.91-0.99)z for AGN. The resultant model agreed well with observed number counts down to sub-muJy level. Additionally, we compared the model with cosmic star formation rate density history with multiple observations in various wavelength and confirmed that our result is consistent with literature up to z=3. We further analyzed the statistical effect of gravitational lensing due to the dark matter halos and found that the effect is maximized at S_3GHz = 100muJy with about 1% contribution for SFG and less than 0.5% for AGN for the flux range considered in this study. In order to evaluate the effect of lensing magnification on parameter estimation in the SKA observations, we performed Fisher analysis and find that while the bias is limited, there is a distinguishable effect on SFG LF evolution parameter with SKA I MID wide survey, and all-sky and wide survey for AGN LF evolution parameters.

Faraday tomography through broadband polarimetry can provide crucial information on magnetized astronomical objects, such as quasars, galaxies, or galaxy clusters. However, the limited wavelength coverage of the instruments requires that we solve an ill-posed inverse problem when we want to obtain the Faraday dispersion function (FDF), a tomographic distribution of the magnetoionic media along the line of sight. This paper explores the use of wavelet transforms and the sparsity of the transformed FDFs in the form of wavelet shrinkage (WS) for finding better solutions to the inverse problem. We recently proposed the Constraining and Restoring iterative Algorithm for Faraday Tomography (CRAFT; Cooray et al. 2021), a new flexible algorithm that showed significant improvements over the popular methods such as Rotation Measure Synthesis. In this work, we introduce CRAFT+WS, a new version of CRAFT incorporating the ideas of wavelets and sparsity. CRAFT+WS exhibit significant improvements over the original CRAFT when tested for a complex FDF of realistic Galactic model. Reconstructions of FDFs demonstrate super-resolution in Faraday depth, uncovering previously unseen Faraday complexities in observations. The proposed approach will be necessary for effective cosmic magnetism studies using the Square Kilometre Array and its precursors.

We study spatially resolved properties (on spatial scales of $\sim 1-2$ kpc out to at least $3$ effective radii) of the stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. The properties of the stellar population and dust are derived by fitting the spatially resolved spectral energy distribution (SED) with more than 20 photometric bands ranging from far-ultraviolet to far-infrared. Our newly developed software piXedfit performs point spread function matching of images, pixel binning, and models the stellar light, dust attenuation, dust emission, and emission from a dusty torus heated by an active galactic nucleus simultaneously through the energy balance approach. With this self-consistent analysis, we present the spatially resolved version of the IRX--$β$ relation, finding that it is consistent with the relationship from the integrated photometry. We show that the old stellar populations contribute to the dust heating, which causes an overestimation of star formation rate (SFR) derived from the total ultraviolet and infrared luminosities on kpc scales. With archival high-resolution maps of atomic and molecular gas, we study the radial variation of the properties of the stellar populations (including stellar mass, age, metallicity, and SFR), dust (including dust mass, dust temperature, and abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon), gas, as well as dust-to-stellar mass and dust-to-gas mass ratios. We observe a depletion of molecular gas mass fraction in the central region of the majority of the galaxies, suggesting that the lack of available fuel is an important factor in suppressing the specific SFR at the center.

Quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) can describe some of the characteristic features of quantum electron dynamics that appear in metallic nanostructures, such as spatial nonlocality, electron spill-out, and quantum tunneling. Furthermore, numerical simulations based on QHT are more efficient than fully quantum mechanical approaches, as exemplified by time-dependent density functional theory using a jellium model. However, QHT involves kinetic energy functionals, the practical implementation of which typically induces significant numerical instabilities, particularly in nonlinear optical phenomena. To mitigate this problem, we develop a numerical solution to QHT that is quite stable, even in a nonlinear regime. The key to our approach is to rewrite the dynamical equation of QHT using the effective Schrödinger equation. We apply the new method to the linear and nonlinear responses of a metallic nanoparticle and compare the results with fully quantum mechanical calculations. The results demonstrate the numerical stability of our method, as well as the reliability and limitations of QHT.

Half Heusler (HH) alloys with 18 valence electron count have attracted significant interest in the area of research related to thermoelectrics. Understanding the novel transport properties exhibited by these systems with semiconducting ground state is an important focus area in this field. Large thermal conductivity shown by most of the HH alloy possesses a major hurdle in improving the figure of merit (ZT). Additionally, understanding the mechanism of thermal conduction in heavy constituents HH alloys is an interesting aspect. Here, we have investigated the high temperature thermoelectric properties of ZrIrSb through experimental studies, phonon dispersion and electronic band structure calculations. ZrIrSb is found to exhibit substantially lower magnitude of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient near room temperature, owing to existence of anti-site disorder between Ir/Sb and vacant sites. Interestingly, in ZrIrSb, lattice thermal conductivity is governed by coupling between the acoustic and low frequency optical phonon modes, which originates due to heavier Ir/Sb atoms. This coupling leads to an enhancement in the Umklapp processes due to the optical phonon excitations near zone boundary, resulting in a lower magnitude of \k{appa}L. Our studies point to the fact that the simultaneous existence of two heavy mass elements within a simple unit cell can substantially decrease the lattice degrees of freedom.

For simultaneously achieving the high-power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity of Si-Ge based thermoelectric materials, we employed, in this study, constructively modifying the electronic structure near the chemical potential and nano-structuring by low temperature and high-pressure sintering on nano-crystalline powders. Nickel was doped to create the impurity states near the edge of the valence band for enhancing the power factor with boron for tuning the carrier concentration. The nanostructured samples with the nominal composition of Si0.65-xGe0.32Ni0.03Bx (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04) were synthesized by the mechanical alloying followed low-temperature and high-pressure sintering process. A large magnitude of Seebeck coefficient reaching 321 μVK-1 together with a small electrical resistivity of 4.49 mΩcm, leads to a large power factor of 2.3 Wm-1K-2 at 1000 K. With successfully reduced thermal conductivity down to 1.47 Wm-1K-1, a large value of ZT ~1.56 was obtained for Si0.65-xGe0.32Ni0.03B0.03 at 1000 K

Insight about the scattering mechanisms responsible for reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity (\k{appa}L) in Half-Heusler alloys (HHA) is imperative. In this context, we have thoroughly investigated the temperature response of thermal conductivity of ZrCo1-xIrxSb (x = 0, 0.1 and 0.25). For ZrCoSb, \k{appa}L is found to be ~15.13 W/m-K at 300 K, which is drastically reduced to ~4.37 W/m-K in ZrCo0.9Ir0.1Sb. This observed reduction is ascribed to softening of acoustic phonon modes and point defect scattering, on substitution of heavier mass. However, no further reduction in \k{appa}L is observed in ZrCo0.75Ir0.25Sb, because of identical scattering parameter. This has been elucidated based on the Klemens Callaway model. Also, in the parent alloy, phonon-phonon scattering mechanism plays a significant role in heat conduction process, whereas in Ir substituted alloys, point defect scattering (below 500 K) and phonon-phonon scattering (above 750 K) are the dominant scattering mechanisms. The minimum \k{appa}L is found to be ~1.73 W/m-K (at 950 K) in ZrCo0.9Ir0.1Sb, which is the lowest reported value till now, for n-type Zr based HHA. Our studies indicate that partial substitution of heavier mass element Ir at Co-site effectively reduces the \k{appa}L of n-type ZrCoSb, without modifying the nature of charge carriers.

Galaxy clusters are known to harbour magnetic fields. The nature of the intra-cluster magnetic fields remains an unresolved question. Intra-cluster magnetic field can be observed at the density contact discontinuity formed by cool and dense plasma running into hot ambient plasma, and the discontinuity exists near the 2nd BCG MRC 0600-399 of a merging galaxy cluster Abell 3376 (z=0.0461, hereafter as A3376). Elongated X-ray image in the east-west direction with a comet-like structure reaches a Mpc-scale (Fig1.(a)). Previous radio observations detected the bent jets from MRC 0600-399, moving in same direction as the sub-cluster's motion against ram pressure. Here we report a new radio observation of a radio galaxy MRC 0600-399 which is 3.4 times and 11 times higher resolution and sensitivity than the previous results. Contrary to typical jets, the MRC 0600-399 shows a 90deg bend at the contact discontinuity and the collimated jets further extend over 100 kpc from the bend point. Diffuse, elongated emission named "double-scythe" structures were detected for the first time. The spectral index flattens downstream of the bend point, indicating cosmic-ray re-acceleration. High-resolution numerical simulations reveal that the ordered magnetic field along the discontinuity plays a significant role in the change in the jet direction. The morphology of the "double-scythe" bear remarkable similarities with the simulations, which strengthens our understanding of the interaction between relativistic electrons and intra-cluster magnetic field.
