Large-scale video conferencing services incur significant network cost while serving surging global demands. Our work systematically explores the opportunity to offload a fraction of this traffic to the Internet, a cheaper routing option offered already by cloud providers, from WAN without drop in application performance. First, with a large-scale latency measurement study with 3.5 million data points per day spanning 241K source cities and 21 data centers across the globe, we demonstrate that Internet paths perform comparable to or better than the private WAN for parts of the world (e.g., Europe and North America). Next, we present Titan, a live (12+ months) production system that carefully moves a fraction of the conferencing traffic to the Internet using the above observation. Finally, we propose Titan-Next, a research prototype that jointly assigns the conferencing server and routing option (Internet or WAN) for individual calls. With 5 weeks of production data, we show Titan-Next reduces the sum of peak bandwidth on WAN links that defines the operational network cost by up to 61% compared to state-of-the-art baselines. We will open-source parts of the measurement data.

Femtosecond high-intensity laser pulses at intensities surpassing $10^{14} \,\text{W}/\text{cm}^2$ can generate a diverse range of functional surface nanostructures. Achieving precise control over the production of these functional structures necessitates a thorough understanding of the surface morphology dynamics with nanometer-scale spatial resolution and picosecond-scale temporal resolution. In this study, we show that individual XFEL pulses can elucidate structural changes on surfaces induced by laser-generated plasmas, employing grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS). Using aluminum-coated multilayer samples we can differentiate between ultrafast surface morphology dynamics and subsequent subsurface density dynamics, achieving nanometer-depth sensitivity and subpicosecond temporal resolution. The observed subsurface density dynamics serve to validate advanced simulation models depicting matter under extreme conditions. Our findings promise to unveil novel avenues for laser material nanoprocessing and high-energy-density science.

The motion of line defects (dislocations) has been studied for over 60 years but the maximum speed at which they can move is unresolved. Recent models and atomistic simulations predict the existence of a limiting velocity of dislocation motions between the transonic and subsonic ranges at which the self-energy of dislocation diverges, though they do not deny the possibility of the transonic dislocations. We use femtosecond x-ray radiography to track ultrafast dislocation motion in shock-compressed single-crystal diamond. By visualizing stacking faults extending faster than the slowest sound wave speed of diamond, we show the evidence of partial dislocations at their leading edge moving transonically. Understanding the upper limit of dislocation mobility in crystals is essential to accurately model, predict, and control the mechanical properties of materials under extreme conditions.

Extremely high pressures over a million of atmospheres are required to deform diamonds permanently. Under dynamic high-pressure conditions, even such strong materials lose their strengths so rapidly that the initially pristine lattice transforms into complex dynamics. Here, we report femtosecond x-ray diffraction observations that directly resolve how shock waves deform the crystal lattice in the isotropic nano-polycrystalline form of diamond. The results show that the nano-grain reinforced diamond retains its strength at shock pressures far beyond its elastic limit until it finally approaches zero at 707 GPa, indicating the existence of brittle-ductile transition of nano-polycrystalline diamond under high-strain rate shock compression. The atomic-level deformation process of the diamond observed in this study is a key benchmark for designing high strength materials and simulating their behavior under extreme conditions.

The propagation of a shock wave in solids can stress them to ultra-high pressures of millions of atmospheres. Understanding the behavior of matter at these extreme pressures is essential to describe a wide range of physical phenomena, including the formation of planets, young stars and cores of super-Earths, as well as the behavior of advanced ceramic materials subjected to such stresses. Under megabar (Mbar) pressure, even a solid with high strength exhibits plastic properties, causing the shock wave to split in two. This phenomenon is described by theoretical models, but without direct experimental measurements to confirm them, their validity is still in doubt. Here, we present the results of an experiment in which the evolution of the coupled elastic-plastic wave structure in diamond was directly observed and studied with submicron spatial resolution, using the unique capabilities of the X-ray free-electron laser. The direct measurements allowed, for the first time, the fitting and validation of a strength model for diamond in the range of several Mbar by performing continuum mechanics simulations in 2D geometry. The presented experimental approach to the study of shock waves in solids opens up new possibilities for the direct verification and construction of the equations of state of matter in the ultra-high pressure range, which are relevant for the solution of a variety of problems in high energy density physics.

We searched for the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C by measuring the $α$ inelastic scattering at $E_α = 388$ MeV at forward angles including 0 degrees. We performed the distorted-wave Born-approximation calculation with the single-folding potential and the multipole decomposition analysis to determine the isoscalar transition strengths in $^{13}$C. We found a bump structure around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV due to the isoscalar monopole ($IS0$) transition. A peak-fit analysis suggested that this bump consisted of several $1/2^-$ states. We propose that this bump is due to the mirror state of the 13.5 MeV-state in $^{13}$N, which dominantly decays to the $α$ condensed state in $^{12}$C. It was speculated that the $1/2^-$ states around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV were candidates for the $α$ condensed state, but the $3α+ n$ orthogonality condition model suggests that the $α$ condensed state is unlikely to emerge as the negative parity states. We also found two $1/2^+$ or $3/2^+$ states at $E_x = 14.5$ and 16.1 MeV excited with the isoscalar dipole ($IS1$) strengths. We suggest that the 16.1-MeV state is a possible candidate for the $α$ condensed state predicted by the cluster-model calculations on the basis of the good correspondence between the experimental and calculated level structures. However, the theoretical $IS1$ transition strength for this state is significantly smaller than the measured value. Further experimental information is strongly desired to establish the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C.

The high-intensity beam that will soon be available at H-line allows for more precise measurements by one order of magnitude. We plan to conduct two staged measurements. First, we will measure the Mu-HFS in a near-zero magnetic field, and thereafter we will measure it in a strong magnetic field. We have developed two microwave cavities for this purpose. Furthermore, we evaluated systematic uncertainties from such a fluctuation of microwave fields and confirm the requirement of the microwave system, we use a microwave field distribution calculated from the finite element method.

Observing ultrafast laser-induced structural changes in nanoscale systems is essential for understanding the dynamics of intense light-matter interactions. For laser intensities on the order of $10^{14} \, \rm W/cm^2$, highly-collisional plasmas are generated at and below the surface. Subsequent transport processes such as heat conduction, electron-ion thermalization, surface ablation and resolidification occur at picosecond and nanosecond time scales. Imaging methods, e.g. using x-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), were hitherto unable to measure the depth-resolved subsurface dynamics of laser-solid interactions with appropriate temporal and spatial resolution. Here we demonstrate picosecond grazing-incidence small-angle x-ray scattering (GISAXS) from laser-produced plasmas using XFEL pulses. Using multi-layer (ML) samples, both the surface ablation and subsurface density dynamics are measured with nanometer depth resolution. Our experimental data challenges the state-of-the-art modeling of matter under extreme conditions and opens new perspectives for laser material processing and high-energy-density science.

The two-dimensional ordering of bacteriorhodopsins in a lipid bilayer was studied using a binary hard-disk model. The phase diagrams were calculated, taking into account the lateral depletion effects. The critical concentrations of the protein ordering for the monomers and the trimers were obtained from the phase diagrams. The critical concentration ratio agreed well with the experiment when the repulsive core interaction between the depletants, namely the lipids, was taken into account. The results suggest that the depletion effect plays an important role in the association behaviors of transmembrane proteins.

Staging laser wake-field acceleration is considered as a necessary technique for developing full-optical jitter-free electron accelerators. Splitting of the acceleration length into several technical parts with their lengths smaller than the dephasing length and with independent laser drivers allows generation of stable, reproducible acceleration fields. Temporal and spatial coupling of pre-accelerated electron bunches for their injection in the acceleration phase of a successive laser pulse wake field is the key part of the staging laser-driven acceleration. Here, characterization of the coupling is performed with dense, stable, a narrow energy band <3% and energy selectable electron beams with charges ~1.6 pC and energy ~10 MeV generated from a laser plasma cathode. Cumulative focusing of electron bunches in a low density pre-plasma, exhibiting the Budker- Bennett effect, is shown to result in the efficient injection of electrons even with a long distance between the injector and the booster in the laser pulse wake. Measured characteristics of electron beams modified by the booster wake field agree well with those obtained by multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Interaction of axisymmetrically-polarized (radially or azimuthally-polarized), relativistically intense laser pulses (ALP) with under-dense plasma is shown experimentally to be different from the interaction of conventional Gaussian pulses. The difference is clearly observed in distinct spectra of scattered laser light as well as in appearance of a strong side emission of second harmonic in the vicinity of focus spot. According 3D particle-in-cell simulations, this is a result of instability in the propagation of ALP in under-dense plasma. Laser wakefield acceleration of electrons by ALP, therefore, is less efficient than that by Gaussian laser pulses but ALP may be interesting for efficient electron self-injection.

The vector analyzing power has been measured for the elastic scattering of neutron-rich 6He from polarized protons at 71 MeV/nucleon making use of a newly constructed solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field and at high temperature. Two approaches based on local one-body potentials were applied to investigate the spin-orbit interaction between a proton and a 6He nucleus. An optical model analysis revealed that the spin-orbit potential for 6He is characterized by a shallow and long-ranged shape compared with the global systematics of stable nuclei. A semimicroscopic analysis with a alpha+n+n cluster folding model suggests that the interaction between a proton and the alpha core is essentially important in describing the p+6He elastic scattering. The data are also compared with fully microscopic analyses using non-local optical potentials based on nucleon-nucleon g-matrices.

The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.

Abstract:
A deuteron beam polarimeter has been constructed at the Internal Target Station
at the Nuclotron of JINR. The polarimeter is based on spin-asymmetry measurements in the d-p elastic scattering at large angles and the deuteron kinetic energy of 270 MeV. It allows to measure vector and tensor components of the deuteron beam polarization
simultaneously.

The possibility of observing neutrinoless double beta decay offers the opportunity of determining the effective neutrino mass if the nuclear matrix element were known. Theoretical calculations are uncertain and the occupations of valence orbits by nucleons active in the decay are likely to be important. The occupation of valence proton orbits in the ground states of 76Ge, a candidate for such decay, and 76Se, the corresponding daughter nucleus, were determined by precisely measuring cross sections for proton-removing transfer reactions. As in previous work on neutron occupations, we find that the Fermi surface for protons is much more diffuse than previously thought, and the occupancies of at least three orbits change significantly between the two 0+ ground states.

The energy transfer spectra for ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ at large $θ_{\rm lab}$ ($\ge$ $16^{\circ}$) are dominated by quasielastic contributions, and can be reasonably reproduced by plane-wave impulse approximation (PWIA) calculations for quasielastic scattering.
By contrast, the known $L$ = 1 resonances in ${}^{4}{\rm Li}$ are clearly observed near the threshold in the ${}^{4}{\rm He}(p,n)$ spectra.
Because these contributions are remarkable at small angles, the energy spectra are significantly different from those expected for quasielastic scattering.
The data are compared with the PWIA calculations, and it is found that the quasielastic contributions are dominant at large $θ_{\rm lab}$ ($\ge$ $22^{\circ}$).
The nuclear correlation effects on the quasielastic peak for ${}^{4}{\rm He}(p,n)$ are also discussed.

We report measurements of the cross-section and a complete set of polarization transfer coefficients for the ${}^{3}{\rm He}(p,n)$ reaction at a bombarding energy $T_p$ = 346 MeV and a reaction angle $θ_{\rm lab}$ = $0^{\circ}$.
The data are compared with the corresponding free nucleon-nucleon values on the basis of the predominance of quasi-elastic scattering processes.
Significant discrepancies have been observed in the polarization transfer $D_{LL}(0^{\circ})$, which are presumably the result of the three-proton $T$ = 3/2 resonance.
The spin--parity of the resonance is estimated to be $1/2^-$, and the distribution is consistent with previous results obtained for the same reaction at $T_p$ = 48.8 MeV.

The observed negative sign of the tensor analyzing powers Ayy, Axx and Axz at small angles clearly demonstrate the sensitivity to the ratio of the D and S wave component of the 3He wave function. However, the one-nucleon exchange calculations by using the standard 3He wave functions have failed to reproduce the strong variation of the tensor analyzing powers as a function of the angle in the c.m.

High precision vector and tensor analyzing powers of elastic deuteron-proton d+p scattering have been measured at intermediate energies to investigate effects of three-nucleon forces (3NF). Angular distribution in the range of 70-120 degree in the center-of mass frame for incident-deuteron energies of 130 and 180 MeV were obtained using the RIKEN facility. The beam polarization was unambiguously determined by measuring the 12C(d,alpha)10B(2+) reaction at 0 degree. Results of the measurements are compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon calculations. The present modeling of nucleon-nucleon forces and its extension to the three-nucleon system is not sufficient to describe the high precision data consistently and requires, therefore, further investigation.

The deuteron to proton polarization transfer coefficients for the $d$--$p$ elastic scattering were precisely measured with an incoming deuteron energy of 135 MeV/u at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The data are compared to theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of three-nucleon Faddeev equations with high--precision nucleon--nucleon forces combined with different three-nucleon forces (3NFs), representing the current, most popular models: the $2π$-exchange Tucson-Melbourne model, a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry TM'(99), and the Urbana IX 3NF. Theory predicts large 3NF effects, especially in the angular range around the cross section minimum, but the present data only partially concurs, predominantly for $K_{xx}^{y'}-K_{yy}^{y'}$ ($K_{xx}^{y'}$, $K_{yy}^{y'}$). For the induced polarization, $P^{y'}$, the TM$'$(99) and Urbana IX 3NFs reproduce the data, but the Tucson-Melbourne 3NF fails to describe the data. For the polarization transfer coefficients, $K_{y}^{y'}$ and $K_{xz}^{y'}$, the predicted 3NF ffects are in drastic conflict to the data. These facts clearly reveal the defects of the 3NF models currently used.
