We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the young star cluster Berkeley 59 (Be 59) based on the $Gaia$ data and deep infrared (IR) observations with the 3.58-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and $Spitzer$ space telescope. The mean proper motion of the cluster is found to be $μ$$_α$cos$δ$ $\sim$ -0.63 mas yr$^{-1}$ and $μ$$_δ$ $\sim$ -1.83 mas yr$^{-1}$ and the kinematic distance of the cluster, $\sim$ 1 kpc, is in agreement with previous photometric studies. Present data is the deepest available near-IR observations for the cluster so far and reached below 0.03 M$_\odot$. The mass function of the cluster region is calculated using the statistically cleaned color-magnitude diagram and is similar to the Salpeter value for the member stars above 0.4 M$_\odot$. In contrast, the slope becomes shallower ($Γ$ $\sim$ 0.01 $\pm$ 0.18) in the mass range 0.04 - 0.4 M$_\odot$, comparable to other nearby clusters. The spatial distribution of young brown dwarfs (BDs) and stellar candidates shows a non-homogeneous distribution. This suggests that the radiation feedback from massive stars may be a prominent factor contributing to the BD population in the cluster Be 59. We also estimated the star-to-BD ratio for the cluster, which is found to be $\sim$ 3.6. The Kolomogorov-Smirnov test shows that stellar and BD populations significantly differ, and stellar candidates are near the cluster center compared to the BDs, suggesting mass segregation in the cluster toward the substellar mass regime.

We present a comprehensive photometric study of RR Lyrae stars in the M3 globular cluster, utilising a vast dataset of 3140 optical ($UBVRI$) CCD images spanning 35 years from astronomical data archives. We have successfully identified previously known 238 RR Lyrae stars from the photometric data, comprising 178 RRab, 49 RRc, and 11 RRd stars. Multi-band periodogram was used to significantly improve the long-term periods of $65\%$ of RR Lyrae stars in our sample, thanks to the unprecedentedly long temporal coverage of the observations. The light curve templates were used to obtain accurate and precise mean magnitudes and amplitudes of all RR Lyrae variables. We combined optical ($UBVRI$) and near-infrared (NIR, $JHK_{s}$) photometry of RR Lyrae variables to investigate their location in the colour-magnitude diagrams as well as the pulsation properties such as period distributions, Bailey diagrams and amplitude ratios. The Period-Luminosity relations in $R$ and $I$ bands and Period-Wesenheit relations were derived after excluding outliers identified in CMDs. The Period-Wesenheit relations calibrated via the theoretically predicted relations were used to determine a distance modulus of $μ= 15.04 \pm 0.04 \,{\rm (stats)} \pm 0.19 \,{\rm {(syst.)}}$ mag (using metal-independent $W_{BV}$ Wesenheit) and $μ= 15.03 \pm 0.04 \,{\rm (stats)} \pm 0.17 \,{\rm {(syst.)}}$ mag (using metal-dependent $W_{VI}$ Wesenheit). Our distance measurements are in excellent agreement with published distances to M3 in the literature. We also employed an artificial neural network based comparison of theoretical and observed light curves to determine physical parameters (mass, luminosity, and effective temperature) for $79$ non-Blazhko RRab stars that agree with limited literature measurements.

Draco dwarf Spheroidal galaxy (dSph) is one of the nearest and the most dark matter dominated satellites of the Milky Way. We obtained multi-epoch near-infrared (NIR, $JHK_s$) observations of the central region of Draco dSph covering a sky area of $\sim 21'\times21'$ using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Homogeneous $JHK_s$ time-series photometry for 212 RR Lyrae (173 fundamental-mode, 24 first-overtone, and 15 mixed-mode variables) and 5 Anomalous Cepheids in Draco dSph is presented and used to derive their period-luminosity relations at NIR wavelengths for the first-time. The small scatter of $\sim 0.05$~mag in these empirical relations for RR Lyrae stars is consistent with those in globular clusters and suggests a very small metallicity spread, up to $\sim0.2$~dex, among these centrally located variables. Based on empirically calibrated NIR period-luminosity-metallicity relations for RR Lyrae in globular clusters, we determined a distance modulus to Draco dSph of $μ_\textrm{RRL} = 19.557 \pm 0.026$ mag. The calibrated $K_s$-band period-luminosity relations for Anomalous Cepheids in the Draco dSph and the Large Magellanic Cloud exhibit statistically consistent slopes but systematically different zero-points, hinting at possible metallicity dependence of $\sim-0.3$ mag~dex$^{-1}$. Finally, the apparent magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch in $I$ and $J$ bands also agree well with their absolute calibrations with the adopted RR Lyrae distance to Draco. Our recommended $\sim1.5\%$ precise RR Lyrae distance, $D_\textrm{Draco} = 81.55 \pm 0.98 \textrm{(statistical)} \pm 1.17 \textrm{(systematic)}$~kpc, is the most accurate and precise distance to Draco dSph galaxy.

We present new theoretical period-luminosity (PL) and period-Wesenheit (PW) relations for a fine grid of convective BL Her, the shortest period T2Cs, models computed using MESA-RSP and compare our results with the empirical relations from Gaia DR3. We use the state-of-the-art 1D non-linear radial stellar pulsation tool MESA-RSP to compute models of BL Her stars over a wide range of input parameters - metallicity (-2.0 dex $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ 0.0 dex), stellar mass (0.5M$_{\odot}$-0.8M$_{\odot}$), stellar luminosity (50L$_{\odot}$-300L$_{\odot}$) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). The BL Her stars in the All Sky region exhibit statistically different PL slopes compared to the theoretical PL slopes computed using the four sets of convection parameters. We find the empirical PL and PW slopes from BL Her stars in the Magellanic Clouds to be statistically consistent with the theoretical relations computed using the different convection parameter sets in the Gaia passbands. There is negligible effect of metallicity on the PL relations in the individual Gaia passbands. However, there exists a small but significant negative coefficient of metallicity in the PWZ relations for the BL Her models using the four sets of convection parameters. This could be attributed to the increased sensitivity of bolometric corrections to metallicities at wavelengths shorter than the V band. Our BL Her models also suggest a dependence of the mass-luminosity relation on metallicity. We found the observed Fourier parameter space to be covered well by our models. Higher mass models (> 0.6M$_{\odot}$) may be needed to reliably model the observed light curves of BL Her stars in the All Sky region. We also found the theoretical light curve structures (especially the Fourier amplitude parameters) to be affected by the choice of convection parameters.

Milky Way Cepheid variables with accurate {\it Hubble Space Telescope} photometry have been established as standards for primary calibration of the cosmic distance ladder to achieve a percent-level determination of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). These 75 Cepheid standards are the fundamental sample for investigation of possible residual systematics in the local $H_0$ determination due to metallicity effects on their period-luminosity relations. We obtained new high-resolution ($R\sim81,000$), high signal-to-noise ($S/N\sim50-150$) multi-epoch spectra of 42 out of 75 Cepheid standards using ESPaDOnS instrument at the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our spectroscopic metallicity measurements are in good agreement with the literature values with systematic differences up to $0.1$ dex due to different metallicity scales. We homogenized and updated the spectroscopic metallicities of all 75 Milky Way Cepheid standards and derived their multiwavelength ($GVIJHK_s$) period-luminosity-metallicity and period-Wesenheit-metallicity relations using the latest {\it Gaia} parallaxes. The metallicity coefficients of these empirically calibrated relations exhibit large uncertainties due to low statistics and a narrow metallicity range ($Δ\textrm{[Fe/H]}=0.6$~dex). These metallicity coefficients are up to three times better constrained if we include Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud and range between $-0.21\pm0.07$ and $-0.43\pm0.06$ mag/dex. The updated spectroscopic metallicities of these Milky Way Cepheid standards were used in the Cepheid-Supernovae distance ladder formalism to determine $H_0=72.9~\pm 1.0$\textrm{~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$}, suggesting little variation ($\sim 0.1$ ~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$) in the local $H_0$ measurements due to different Cepheid metallicity scales.

The non-linear models were computed for periods typical of BL~Her stars, i.e. $1\leq P ({\rm days}) \leq4$, covering a wide range of input parameters: metallicity ($-$2.0 dex $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ 0.0 dex), stellar mass (0.5--0.8 M$_{\odot}$), luminosity (50--300 L$_{\odot}$) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). We investigate the impact of four sets of convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Most empirical relations match well with theoretical relations from the BL~Her models computed using the four sets of convection parameters. No significant metallicity effects are seen in the PR relations. Another important result from our grid of BL~Her models is that it supports combining PL relations of RR Lyrae and Type~II Cepheids together as an alternative to classical Cepheids for the extragalactic distance scale calibration.

We present a new technique to generate the light curves of RRab stars in different photometric bands ($I$ and $V$ bands) using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). A pre-computed grid of models was used to train the ANN, and the architecture was tuned using the $I$ band light curves. The best-performing network was adopted to make the final interpolators in the $I$ and $V$ bands. The trained interpolators were used to predict the light curve of RRab stars in the Magellanic Clouds, and the distances to the LMC and SMC were determined based on the reddening independent Wesenheit index. The estimated distances are in good agreement with the literature. The comparison of the predicted and observed amplitudes, and Fourier amplitude ratios showed good agreement, but the Fourier phase parameters displayed a few discrepancies. To showcase the utility of the interpolators, the light curve of the RRab star EZ Cnc was generated and compared with the observed light curve from the Kepler mission. The reported distance to EZ Cnc was found to be in excellent agreement with the updated parallax measurement from Gaia EDR3. Our ANN interpolator provides a fast and efficient technique to generate a smooth grid of model light curves for a wide range of physical parameters, which is computationally expensive and time-consuming using stellar pulsation codes.

We present results of near-infrared (NIR) monitoring of Galactic globular clusters to empirically quantify the metallicity dependence of NIR PLRs for RR Lyrae variables. Our sample includes homogeneous, accurate, and precise photometric data for 964 RR Lyrae variables in 11 globular clusters covering a large metallicity range ($Δ\textrm{[Fe/H]}\sim2$~dex). We derive $JHK_s$ band period-luminosity-metallicity (PLZ) and period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations anchored using 346 Milky Way field RR Lyrae stars with {\it Gaia} parallaxes, and simultaneously solved for independent distances to globular clusters. We find a significant metallicity dependence of $\sim0.2$~mag/dex in $JHK_s$ band PLZ and PWZ relations for RR Lyrae stars independent of the adopted metallicity scale. The metallicity coefficients and the zero-points of the empirical PLZ and PWZ relations are in excellent agreement with the predictions from the horizontal branch evolution and pulsation models. Furthermore, RR Lyrae based distances to our sample of globular clusters are also statistically consistent with other independent measurements in the literature. Our recommended empirical $JHK_s$ band PLZ relations are also provided for RR Lyrae based distance measurements.

NGC 6441 is a bulge globular cluster with an unusual horizontal branch morphology and a rich population of RR Lyrae (RRL) and Type II Cepheid (T2C) variables that is unexpected for its relatively high metallicity. We present near-infrared (NIR, $JHK_s$) time-series observations of 42 RRL, 8 T2Cs, and 10 eclipsing binary candidate variables in NGC 6441. The multi-epoch observations were obtained using the FLAMINGOS-2 instrument on the 8-m Gemini South telescope. Multi-band data are used to investigate pulsation properties of RRL and T2C variables including their light curves, instability strip, period--amplitude diagrams, and period--luminosity and period--wesenheit relations (PLRs and PWRs) in $JHK_s$ filters. NIR pulsation properties of RRL variables are well fitted with theoretical models that have canonical helium content and mean-metallicity of NGC 6441 ([Fe/H]$=-0.44\pm0.07$~dex). The helium-enhanced RRL models predict brighter NIR magnitudes and bluer colors than the observations of RRL in the cluster. This suggests that these RRL variables in NGC 6441 are either not significantly helium enhanced as previously thought or the impact of such enhancement is smaller in NIR than the predictions of the pulsation models. We also use theoretical calibrations of RRL period--luminosity--metallicity (PLZ) relations to simultaneously estimate the mean reddening, $E(J-K_s)=0.26\pm0.06$~mag, and the distance, $d=12.67\pm0.09$~kpc, to NGC 6441. Our mean reddening value and the distance are consistent with the independent estimates from the bulge reddening map based on red clump stars and the latest Gaia data, respectively. Our distance and reddening values provide a very good agreement between the PLRs of T2Cs in NGC 6441 and those for RRL and T2Cs in Galactic globular clusters that span a broad range of metallicity.

Globular clusters (GCs) associated with the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) have evolved under the gravitational potential of both Sgr dSph and the Milky Way. The effects of these potentials are most pronounced in the extra-tidal regions as compared to the central regions of the GCs.We aim to study the extra-tidal regions of the GCs that are possibly associated with Sgr dSph, namely Arp 2, Terzan 8, NGC 5634, NGC 6284, Terzan 7, NGC 2419, NGC 4147, M 54 and Pal 12, using data from the {\it Gaia} early data release 3. We selected the extra-tidal candidates based on their angular distances from the cluster centre in the RA-Dec plane, proper motions of the clusters and the individual extra-tidal star candidates, and their positions on the colour-magnitude diagrams of the clusters. We found extra-tidal candidates for the nine studied GCs. For eight of them, the surface density of candidate extra-tidal stars in the vicinity of the clusters is in significant excess with respect to more distant surrounding fields. No extended extra-tidal features beyond 5 tidal radii were detected for any of the clusters. We publish a list of the most probable extra-tidal candidates that we determined using Gaia astrometric and photometric data. Our analysis shows that the clusters that are associated with Sgr dSph are more likely affected by the gravitational potential of the Sgr, as the distribution of extra-tidal stars is elongated in the same direction as the local stream. NGC 4147 is the only exception. We found some high-probability candidate extra-tidal stars in several of the analysed clusters. We failed to detect any coherent large-scale tidal tail around them.

The optical variations of RBS 0490 have been found to occur at the period of 1.689$\pm$0.001 hr which appears to be a probable orbital period of the system. Present photometric observations of SDSS J075939.79+191417.3 confirm and refine the previously determined orbital period as 3.14240928$\pm$0.00000096 hr. The presence of long-duration eclipse features in the light curves of SDSS J075939.79+191417.3 indicates eclipses might be due to an accretion disc and bright spot. The orbital inclination of SDSS J075939.79+191417.3 is estimated to be $\sim$ 78 $^\circ$ using the eclipse morphology. The phased-light curve variations during the orbital cycle of RBS 0490 provide evidence of the emission from an independent second accretion region or a second fainter pole. Optical spectra of RBS 0490 and SDSS J075939.79+191417.3 show the presence of strong Balmer, weak He II ($λ$4686) emission lines, along with the detection of strong $Hβ$ emission lines with a large value of equivalent width. We report the first detection of the magnetic field in a star of FS CMa type, a subgroup of objects characterized by the B[e] phenomenon. The split of magnetically sensitive lines in IRAS 17449+2320 determines the magnetic field modulus of 6.2+/-0.2 kG. Spectral lines and their variability reveal the presence of a B-type spectrum and a hot continuum source in the visible. The hot source confirms GALEX UV photometry. Because there is a lack of spectral lines for the hot source in the visible, the spectral fitting gives only the lower temperature limit of the hot source, which is 50 000 K, and the upper limit for the B-type star of 11 100 K. The V/R ratio of the H alpha line shows quasiperiodic behavior on timescale of 800 days. We detected a strong red-shifted absorption in the wings of Balmer and OI lines in some of the spectra. The absorption lines of helium and other metals show no, or very small, variations, indicating unusually stable photospheric regions for FS CMa stars. We detected two events of material infall, which were revealed to be discrete absorption components of resonance lines.
The discovery of the strong magnetic field together with the Gaia measurements of the proper motion show that the most probable nature of this star is that of a post-merger object created after the leaving the binary of the birth cluster. Another possible scenario is a magnetic Ap star around Terminal-Age Main Sequence (TAMS). On the other hand, the strong magnetic field defies the hypothesis that IRAS 17449+2320 is an extreme classical Be star. Thus, IRAS 17449+2320 provides a pretext for exploring a new explanation of the nature of FS CMa stars or, at least, a group of stars with very similar spectral properties.

Some of these objects, which are also known as nitrogen-enhanced stars, are hypothesised to be relics of the ancient assembly history of the Milky Way. Although the chemical similarity of nitrogen-enhanced stars to the unique chemical patterns observed in globular clusters has been observed, a direct connection between field stars and globular clusters has not yet been proven. In this work, we report on high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6723, and the serendipitous discovery of a star, 2M18594405$-$3651518, located outside the cluster (near the tidal radius) but moving on a similar orbit, providing the first clear piece of evidence of a star that was very likely once a cluster member and has recently been ejected. Its nitrogen abundance ratio ([N/Fe]$\gtrsim + 0.94$) is well above the typical Galactic field-star levels, and it exhibits noticeable enrichment in the heavy $s$-process elements (Ce, Nd, and Yb), along with moderate carbon enrichment; all characteristics are known examples in globular clusters. This result suggests that some of the nitrogen-enhanced stars in the bulge likely originated from the tidal disruption of globular clusters.

We present new near-infrared, $JHK_s$, Period--Luminosity relations (PLRs) for RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 53 (M53 or NGC 5024) globular cluster. Multi-epoch $JHK_s$ observations, obtained with the WIRCam instrument on the 3.6-m Canada France Hawaii Telescope, are used for the first time to estimate precise mean-magnitudes for 63 RR Lyrae stars in M53 including 29 fundamental-mode (RRab) and 34 first-overtone modes (RRc) variables. The $JHK_s$-band PLRs for RR Lyrae stars are best constrained for RRab types with a minimal scatter of 22, 23, and 19 mmag, respectively. The combined sample of RR Lyrae is used to derive the $K_s$-band PLR, $K_s = -2.303 (0.063) \log P + 15.212 (0.016)$ exhibiting a $1σ$ dispersion of only $0.027$ mag. Theoretical Period--Luminosity--Metallicity (PLZ) relations are used to predict parallaxes for 400 Galactic RR Lyrae resulting in a median parallax zero-point offset of $-7\pm3~μ$as in {\it Gaia} Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), which increases to $22\pm2~μ$as if the parallax corrections are applied. We also estimate a robust distance modulus, $μ_\textrm{M53} = 16.403 \pm 0.024$ (statistical) $\pm 0.033$ (systematic) mag, to M53 based on theoretical calibrations. Homogeneous and precise mean-magnitudes for RR Lyrae in M53 together with similar literature data for M3, M4, M5, and $ω$ Cen are used to empirically calibrate a new RR Lyrae PLZ$_{K_s}$ relation, $K_s = -0.848 (0.007) -2.320 (0.006) \log P + 0.166 (0.011) {\rm[Fe/H]}$, anchored with {\it Gaia} EDR3 distances and theoretically predicted relations, and simultaneously estimate precise RR Lyrae based distances to these globular clusters.

We present a new grid of convective BL Herculis models using the state-of-the-art 1D non-linear radial stellar pulsation tool MESA-RSP. We investigate the impact of metallicity and four sets of different convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Non-linear models were computed for periods typical for BL Her stars, i.e. $1 \leq \mathrm{P (days)} \leq 4$ covering a wide range of input parameters - metallicity ($-2.0\; \mathrm{dex} \leq \mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq 0.0\; \mathrm{dex}$), stellar mass (0.5M$_{\odot}$-0.8M$_{\odot}$), luminosity (50L$_{\odot}$-300L$_{\odot}$) and effective temperature (full extent of the instability strip; in steps of 50K). The total number of BL Her models with full-amplitude stable pulsations used in this study is 10280 across the four sets of convection parameters. We obtain their multiband ($UBVRIJHKLL'M$) light curves and derive new theoretical period-luminosity ($PL$), period-Wesenheit ($PW$) and period-radius ($PR$) relations at mean light. We find that the models computed with radiative cooling show statistically similar slopes for $PL$, $PW$ and $PR$ relations. Most empirical relations match well with the theoretical $PL$, $PW$ and $PR$ relations from the BL Her models computed using the four sets of convection parameters. However, $PL$ slopes of the models with radiative cooling provide a better match to empirical relations for BL Her stars in the LMC in the $HK_S$ bands. For each set of convection parameters, the effect of metallicity is significant in $U$ and $B$-bands and negligible in infrared bands, which is consistent with empirical results. No significant metallicity effects are seen in the $PR$ relations.

Context. Extratidal stars are stellar bodies that end up outside the tidal radius of a cluster as a result of internal processes or external forces acting upon it. The presence and spatial distribution of these stars can give us insights into the past evolution of a cluster inside our Galaxy. Aims. Previous works suggest that globular clusters, when explored in detail, show evidence of extratidal stars. We aim to search for possible extratidal stars in the Galactic globular clusters NGC 6397, NGC 2808, and NGC 6266 using the photometry and proper motion measurements from Gaia DR2 database (Gaia Collaboration et al. 2018). Results. Finally, 120, 126, and 107 extratidal candidate stars were found lying outside the tidal radius of the globular clusters NGC 6397, NGC 2808, and NGC 6266, respectively. 70%, 25.4%, and 72.9% of the extratidal stars found are located outside the Jacobi radius of NGC 6397, NGC 2808, and NGC 6266, respectively. The spatial distribution of the extratidal stars belonging to NGC 6397 appears S-like, extending along the curved leading and trailing arms. NGC 2808 has an overdensity of stars in the trailing part of the cluster and NGC 6266 seems to have overdensities of extratidal stars in its eastern and northern sides. Conclusions. Proper motions and color-magnitude diagrams can be used to identify extratidal candidate stars around GCs. Nonetheless, depending on how different the kinematics and stellar populations of a cluster are compared to the Milky Way field, the fraction of contamination can be larger. All three clusters are found to have extratidal stars outside their tidal radii. For NGC 6397 and NGC 2808, these stars may be the result of a combined effect of the disc shocks and tidal disruptions. For NGC 6266, the distribution of extratidal stars is symmetrical around it, most likely indicating that the cluster has an extended stellar envelope.

RR Lyraes (RRLs) and long period classical Cepheids (P > 10d) have been found to exhibit different PC behavior at minimum and maximum light which can be explained by the HIF-photosphere interaction based on their location on the HR diagram. In this work, we extend the study to include type II Cepheids (T2Cs) with an aim to test the HIF-photosphere interaction theory across a broad spectrum of variable star types. We find W Vir stars and BL Her stars to have similar PC relations as those from long period and short period classical Cepheids, respectively. We also use MESA to compute RRL, BL Her and classical Cepheid models to study the theoretical HIF-photosphere distance and find the results to be fairly consistent with the HIF-photosphere interaction theory.

We present new near-infrared ($JHK_s$) time-series observations of RR Lyrae variables in the Messier 3 (NGC 5272) globular cluster using the WIRCam instrument at the 3.6-m Canada France Hawaii Telescope. Our observations cover a sky area of $\sim 21'\times 21'$ around the cluster center and provide an average of twenty epochs of homogeneous $JHK_s$-band photometry. New homogeneous photometry is used to estimate robust mean magnitudes for 175 fundamental-mode (RRab), 47 overtone-mode (RRc), and 11 mixed-mode (RRd) variables. Our sample of 233 RR Lyrae variables is the largest thus far obtained in a single cluster with time-resolved, multi-band near-infrared photometry. Near-infrared to optical amplitude ratios for RR Lyrae in Messier 3 exhibit a systematic increase moving from RRc to short-period ($P < 0.6$~days) and long-period ($P \gtrsim 0.6$~days) RRab variables. We derive $JHK_s$-band Period--Luminosity relations for RRab, RRc, and the combined sample of variables. Absolute calibrations based on the theoretically predicted Period--Luminosity--Metallicity relations for RR Lyrae stars yield a distance modulus, $μ= 15.041 \pm 0.017~(\textrm{statistical}) \pm 0.036~(\textrm{systematic})$~mag, to Messier 3. When anchored to trigonometric parallaxes for nearby RR Lyrae stars from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and the {\it Gaia} mission, our distance estimates are consistent with those resulting from the theoretical calibrations, albeit with relatively larger systematic uncertainties.

Theoretical stellar spectra rely on model stellar atmospheres computed based on our understanding of the physical laws at play in the stellar interiors. These models, coupled with atomic and molecular line databases, are used to generate theoretical stellar spectral libraries (SSLs) comprising of stellar spectra over a regular grid of atmospheric parameters (temperature, surface gravity, abundances) at any desired resolution. Another class of SSLs is referred to as empirical spectral libraries; these contain observed spectra at limited resolution. SSLs play an essential role in deriving the properties of stars and stellar populations. Both theoretical and empirical libraries suffer from limited coverage over the parameter space. This limitation is overcome to some extent by generating spectra for specific sets of atmospheric parameters by interpolating within the grid of available parameter space. In this work, we present a method for spectral interpolation in the optical region using machine learning algorithms that are generic, easily adaptable for any SSL without much change in the model parameters, and computationally inexpensive. We use two machine learning techniques, Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), and train the models on the MILES library. We apply the trained models to spectra from the CFLIB for testing and show that the performance of the two models is comparable. We show that both the models achieve better accuracy than the existing methods of polynomial based interpolation and the Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) interpolation.

Period-colour and amplitude-colour (PCAC) relations can be used to probe both the hydrodynamics of outer envelope structure and evolutionary status of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. In this work, we incorporate the PCAC relations for RR Lyraes, BL Her, W Vir and classical Cepheids in a single unifying theory that involves the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) and stellar photosphere and the theory of stellar evolution. PC relations for RR Lyraes and classical Cepheids using OGLE-IV data are found to be consistent with this theory: RR Lyraes have shallow/sloped relations at minimum/maximum light whilst long-period ($P>10$ days) Cepheids exhibit sloped/flat PC relations at minimum/maximum light. The differences in the PC relations for Cepheids and RR Lyraes can be explained based on the relative location of the HIF and stellar photosphere which changes depending on their position on the HR diagram. We also extend our analysis of PCAC relations for type II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge, LMC and SMC using OGLE-IV data. We find that BL Her stars have sloped PC relations at maximum and minimum light similar to short-period ($P<10$ days) classical Cepheids. W Vir stars exhibit sloped/flat PC relation at minimum/maximum light similar to long-period classical Cepheids. We also compute state-of-the-art 1D radiation hydrodynamic models of RR Lyraes, BL Her and classical Cepheids using the radial stellar pulsation code in MESA to further test these ideas theoretically and find that the models are generally consistent with this picture. We are thus able to explain PC relations at maximum and minimum light across a broad spectrum of variable star types.

High-resolution optical spectra were obtained in 2017-2019 with The Southern African Large Telescope of fifteen stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. Interstellar Ca ii H and K and Na i D lines are discussed in this paper. In particular, the line profiles are compared with profiles at a comparable spectral resolution obtained in 1993-1996 by Cha & Sembach. Ten of the lines of sight show changes to one or more of the components in that line of sight. Changes include small changes (1-2 km/s) in radial velocity and/or increases/decreases in equivalent width over the two decades between the periods of observation. Changes are more obvious in the Ca K line than in the Na D lines. These changes are attributed to gas disturbed by interactions between the supernova ejecta and the surrounding interstellar medium. A representative timescale may be 20-50 years. Small-scale variations in line profiles across the face of the remnant suggest, as previously remarked, that a linear scale for interactions is a small fraction of the 40 pc size of the present remnant.

The optical and X-ray modulations of RX J0859.1+0537, RX J0749.1-0549, and RX J0649.8-0737 are both found to occur at the orbital periods of 2.393$\pm$0.003 hrs, 3.672$\pm$0.001 hrs, and 4.347$\pm$0.001 hrs, respectively. RX J0859.1+0537 is found to be an eclipsing polar which lies in the region of the period gap, whereas RX J0749.1-0549 and RX J0649.8-0737 are found to be long-period eclipsing polars above the period gap. The eclipse length is found to be 61 min for RX J0749.1-0549 in the R-band, which is the highest among the long period eclipsing polars. The radius of the eclipsed light source is found to be more than the actual size of the white dwarf for these three systems, indicating that the eclipsed component is not only the white dwarf but also appears to include the presence of an extended accretion region. Optical spectra of these systems show the presence of high ionization emission lines along with the strong Balmer emission lines with an inverted Balmer decrement. Cyclotron harmonics are also detected in the optical spectra from which we infer magnetic field strength of the surface of the white dwarf to be 49$\pm$2 MG, 43.5$\pm$1.4 MG, and 44$\pm$1 MG for RX J0859.1+0537, RX J0749.1-0549, and RX J0649.8-0737, respectively.

We report the identification of possible extended star debris candidates beyond the cluster tidal radius of NGC 6362 based on the second {\it Gaia} data release ({\it Gaia} DR2). We found 259 objects possibly associated with the cluster lying in the vicinity of the giant branch and 1--2 magnitudes fainter/brighter than the main-sequence turn-off in the cluster color-magnitude diagram and which cover an area on the sky of $\sim$4.1 deg$^{2}$ centered on the cluster. We traced back the orbit of NGC 6362 in a realistic Milky-Way potential, using the \texttt{GravPot16} package, for 3 Gyrs. The orbit shows that the cluster shares similar orbital properties as the inner disk, having peri-/apo-galactic distances, and maximum vertical excursion from the Galactic plane inside the corotation radius (CR), moving inwards from CR radius to visit the inner regions of the Milky Way. The dynamical history of the cluster reveals that it has crossed the Galactic disk several times in its lifetime and has recently undergone a gravitational shock, $\sim 15.9$ Myr ago, suggesting that less than 0.1\% of its mass has been lost during the current disk-shocking event. Based on the cluster's orbit and position in the Galaxy, we conclude that the possible extended star debris candidates are a combined effect of the shocks from the Galactic disk and evaporation from the cluster. Lastly, the evolution of the vertical component of the angular momentum shows that the cluster is strongly affected dynamically by the Galactic bar potential.

We present Period-Luminosity and Period-Luminosity-Color relations at maximum-light for Mira variables in the Magellanic Clouds using time-series data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) and {\it Gaia} data release 2. The maximum-light relations exhibit a scatter typically up to $\sim 30\%$ smaller than their mean-light counterparts. The apparent magnitudes of Oxygen-rich Miras at maximum-light display significantly smaller cycle-to-cycle variations than at minimum-light. High-precision photometric data for Kepler Mira candidates also exhibit stable magnitude variations at the brightest epochs while their multi-epoch spectra display strong Balmer emission lines and weak molecular absorption at maximum-light. The stability of maximum-light magnitudes for Miras possibly occurs due to the decrease in the sensitivity to molecular bands at their warmest phase. At near-infrared wavelengths, the Period-Luminosity relations of Miras display similar dispersion at mean and maximum-light with limited time-series data in the Magellanic Clouds. A kink in the Oxygen-rich Mira Period-Luminosity relations is found at 300 days in the $VI$-bands which shifts to longer-periods ($\sim 350$~days) at near-infrared wavelengths. Oxygen-rich Mira Period-Luminosity relations at maximum-light provide a relative distance modulus, $Δμ= 0.48\pm0.08$~mag, between the Magellanic Clouds with a smaller statistical uncertainty than the mean-light relations. The maximum-light properties of Miras can be very useful for stellar atmosphere modeling and distance scale studies provided their stability and the universality can be established in other stellar environments in the era of extremely large telescopes.

More than 250 epochs in $VRI$-bands are used to identify and classify variables up to $V\sim 21$~mag. We present a catalogue of optical time-series photometry with periods, mean-magnitudes and classifications for 95 variable stars including 67 pre-main-sequence variables towards star-forming region IC 5070. The pre-main-sequence variables are further classified as candidate classical T Tauri and weak-line T Tauri stars based on their light curve variations and the locations on the color-color and color-magnitude diagrams using optical and infrared data together with Gaia DR2 astrometry. Classical T Tauri stars display variability amplitudes up to three times the maximum fluctuation in disk-free weak-line T Tauri stars, which show strong periodic variations. Short-term variability is missed in our photometry within single nights. Several classical T Tauri stars display long-lasting ($\geq 10$ days) single or multiple fading and brightening events up to a couple of magnitudes at optical wavelengths. The typical mass and age of the pre-main-sequence variables from the isochrone-fitting and spectral energy distributions are estimated to be $\le 1~M_\odot$ and $\sim 2$ Myr, respectively. We do not find any correlation between the optical amplitudes or periods with the physical parameters (mass and age) of pre-main-sequence stars.

We present results from a comparative study of light curves of Cepheid and RR Lyrae stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds with their theoretical models generated from the stellar pulsation codes. Fourier decomposition method is used to analyse the theoretical and the observed light curves at multiple wavelengths. In case of RR Lyrae stars, the amplitude and Fourier parameters from the models are consistent with observations in most period bins except for low metal-abundances ($Z<0.004$). In case of Cepheid variables, we observe a greater offset between models and observations for both the amplitude and Fourier parameters. The theoretical amplitude parameters are typically larger than those from observations, except close to the period of $10$ days. We find that these discrepancies between models and observations can be reduced if a higher convective efficiency is adopted in the pulsation codes. Our results suggest that a quantitative comparison of light curve structure is very useful to provide constraints for the input physics to the stellar pulsation models.

It is well known that most of the stars form in rich clusters. However, recent $Spitzer$ observations have shown that a significant number of stars also form in distributed mode, origin of which is not well understood. In this work, we aim to investigate clustered and distributed mode of star formation in the W4 complex. To do so, we identified and characterized the young stellar population associated with the region using homogeneous infra-red data-sets obtained from 2MASS, GLIMPSE, MIPS and WISE surveys. We make stellar surface density and minimum spanning tree maps to identify young clusters, and use {\it Spitzer} images to identify irradiated structures, such as elephant trunk-like structures (ETLSs) and pillars in the region. The surface density distribution of the young stellar objects (YSOs) reveals three new clusterings and $\sim$ 50\% distributed protostars in the H{\sc ii} region. The clusters are of low-mass nature but significantly younger than the central cluster IC~1805. We identified $\sim$ 38 ETLSs in the region, a majority of which consist of one or a few stars at their tips. We find these stars are low-mass ($<$ 2~M$_\odot$) YSOs, located at the outskirts ($>$ 17 pc) of the cluster IC~1805 and are part of scattered distributed population. We argued that the star formation in the ETLSs of W4 is going on possibly due to triggering effect of expanding W4 bubble. Although high-resolution photometric and spectroscopic data would be required to confirm the scenario, nonetheless, we discuss the implications of this scenario for our understanding of distributed low-mass star formation in cloud complexes as opposed to other mechanisms such as turbulent fragmentation and dynamical ejection.

The Gaia DR2 catalog for RR Lyrae stars (Clementini et al. 2018) is used along with the proper motions and tidal radii data for the globular clusters compiled from literature. A sample of 56 Galactic globular clusters is analyzed. Out of these 56 Galactic globular clusters, only 11 have extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars. However, only two clusters, namely, NGC 3201 and NGC 5024, have enough extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars to draw interesting conclusions. NGC 3201 has 13 extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars which are asymmetrically distributed around its center with more number of stars in its trailing zone than its leading part. We conclude that these asymmetrical tidal tails are due to the combined effect of tidal disruption and the stripped debris from the cluster. On the other hand, NGC 5024 has 5 extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars, four of them are concentrated in a region which is at a distance of about 3 times the tidal radius from its center. These may be the stars that are being ripped apart from the cluster due to tidal disruption. The presence of these extra-tidal RR Lyrae stars in the clusters can be an indication that more cluster stars are present outside their tidal radii which may be revealed by deep wide field CMDs of the clusters.

We discuss time-series analyses of classical Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds at multiple wavelengths. We adopt the Fourier decomposition method to quantify the structural changes in the light curves of Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables. A quantitative comparison of Cepheid Fourier parameters suggests that the canonical mass-luminosity models that lie towards the red-edge of the instability strip show a greater offset with respect to observations for short-period Cepheids. RR Lyrae models are consistent with observations in most period bins. We use ensemble light curve analysis to predict the physical parameters of observed Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables using machine learning methods. Our preliminary results suggest that the posterior distributions of mass, luminosity, temperature and radius for Cepheids and RR Lyraes can be well-constrained for a given metal abundance, provided a smoother grid of models is adopted in various input physical parameters.

We present a detailed light curve analysis of RR Lyrae variables at multiple wavelengths using Fourier decomposition method. The time-series data for RR Lyrae variables in the Galactic bulge and the Magellanic Clouds are taken from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment survey while the infrared light curves are compiled from the literature. We also analyse the multiband theoretical light curves that are generated from the stellar pulsation models of RR Lyrae stars for a wide range of metal-abundances. We find that the theoretical light curve parameters with different metal abundances are consistent with observed parameters in most period bins at both optical and infrared wavelengths. The theoretical and observed Fourier amplitude parameters decrease with increase in wavelength while the Fourier phase parameters increase with wavelength at a given period. We use absolute magnitudes for a subset of theoretical models that fit the observed optical RR Lyrae light curves in the Large Magellanic Cloud to estimate a distance modulus, $μ_\textrm{LMC}=18.51\pm0.07$, independent of the metallicity. We also use Fourier analysis to study the period-color and amplitude-color relations for RR Lyrae stars in the Magellanic Clouds using optical data and find that the slope of period-color relation at minimum light is very shallow or flat and becomes increasingly significant at the maximum light for RRab stars. We also find that the metallicity dependence of the period-color relations increases as we go from minimum to maximum light, suggesting that the mean light results are indeed an average of the various pulsational phases. We summarize that the average variation in these relations is consistent between theory and observations and supports the theory of the interaction of the stellar photosphere and the hydrogen ionization front.

Recently, the technique was further improved in the cooler regime and the validity range was extended up to M6 - M7 spectral type( Teff $\sim\,2900$ K). The present study aims to explore the application of this method on the low-resolution spectra of Am stars, a class of chemically peculiar (CP) stars, to examine its robustness for these objects. We use ULySS with MILES (Medium-resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra) V2 spectral interpolator for parameter determination. We present results from a detailed analysis of theoretical and observed light curves of classical Cepheid variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. Theoretical light curves of Cepheid variables are based on non-linear convective hydrodynamical pulsation models and the observational data are taken from the ongoing wide-field variability surveys. The variation in theoretical and observed light curve parameters as a function of period, wavelength and metallicity is used to constrain the input physics to the pulsation models, such as the mass-luminosity relations obeyed by Cepheid variables. We also account for the variation in the convective efficiency as input to the stellar pulsation models and its impact on the theoretical amplitudes and Period-Luminosity relations for Cepheid variables.

We present results from the Large Magellanic Cloud Near-infrared Synoptic Survey (LMCNISS) for classical and type II Cepheid variables that were identified by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalogue. Multiwavelength time-series data for classical Cepheid variables are used to study light-curve structures as a function of period and wavelength. We exploit a sample of $\sim$1400 classical and $\sim$80 type II Cepheid variables to derive Period--Wesenheit relations that combine both optical and near-infrared data. The new Period--Luminosity and Wesenheit relations are used to estimate distances to several Local Group galaxies (using classical Cepheids) and to Galactic globular clusters (using type II Cepheids). By appealing to a statistical framework, we find that fundamental-mode classical Cepheid Period--Luminosity relations are non-linear around 10--18 days at optical and near-IR wavelengths. We also suggest that a non-linear relation provides a better constraint on the Cepheid Period--Luminosity relation in type Ia Supernovae host galaxies, though it has a negligible effect on the systematic uncertainties affecting the local measurement of the Hubble constant.

The temperature ranges are provided by recent experimental and theoretical work that have suggested that the iron opacities have been considerably underestimated. For Cepheids, we find that the augmented opacities have noticeable effects in certain period ranges (around $\log P \approx 1$) even though there is a degeneracy with mixing length. We also find significant effects in theoretical models of B-star pulsators.

We determine the geometrical and viewing angle parameters of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the Leavitt law based on a sample of more than $3500$ common classical Cepheids (FU and FO) in optical ($V,I$), near-infrared ($JHK_{s}$) and mid-infrared ($[3.6]~μ$m and $[4.5]~μ$m) photometric bands. Statistical reddening and distance modulus free from the effect of reddening to each of the individual Cepheids are obtained using the simultaneous multi-band fit to the apparent distance moduli from the analysis of the resulting Leavitt laws in these seven photometric bands. A reddening map of the LMC obtained from the analysis shows good agreement with the other maps available in the literature. Extinction free distance measurements along with the information of the equatorial coordinates $(α,δ)$ for individual stars are used to obtain the corresponding Cartesian coordinates with respect to the plane of the sky. By fitting a plane solution of the form $z=f(x,y)$ to the observed three dimensional distribution, the following viewing angle parameters of the LMC are obtained: inclination angle $i=25^{\circ}.110\pm 0^{\circ}.365$, position angle of line of nodes $θ_{\text{lon}}=154^{\circ}.702\pm1^{\circ}.378$. On the other hand, modelling the observed three dimensional distribution of the Cepheids as a triaxial ellipsoid, the following values of the geometrical axes ratios of the LMC are obtained: $1.000\pm 0.003:1.151\pm0.003:1.890\pm 0.014$ with the viewing angle parameters: inclination angle of $i=11^{\circ}.920\pm 0^{\circ}.315$ with respect to the longest axis from the line of sight and position angle of line of nodes $θ_{\rm lon} = 128^{\circ}.871\pm 0^{\circ}.569$. The position angles are measured eastwards from north.

We present deep optical observations of the central $\sim$2.5$\times$2.5 pc$^2$ area of the cluster, obtained with the 3.58-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The $V$/($V$-$I$) color-magnitude diagram manifests a clear pre-main-sequence (PMS) population down to $\sim$ 0.2 M$_\odot$. Using the near-infrared and optical colors of the low-mass PMS members we derive a global extinction of A$_V$= 4 mag and a mean age of $\sim$ 1.8 Myr, respectively, for the cluster. We constructed the initial mass function and found that its global slopes in the mass ranges of 0.2 - 28 M$_\odot$ and 0.2 - 1.5 M$_\odot$ are -1.33 and -1.23, respectively, in good agreement with the Salpeter value in the solar neighborhood. We looked for the radial variation of the mass function and found that the slope is flatter in the inner region than in the outer region, indicating mass segregation. The dynamical status of the cluster suggests that the mass segregation is likely primordial. The age distribution of the PMS sources reveals that the younger sources appear to concentrate close to the inner region compared to the outer region of the cluster, a phenomenon possibly linked to the time evolution of star-forming clouds is discussed. Within the observed area, we derive a total mass of $\sim$ 10$^3$ M$_\odot$ for the cluster. Comparing the properties of Berkeley 59 with other young clusters, we suggest it resembles more to the Trapezium cluster.

We present the near-infrared observations of population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey. We identify 340 population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey based on their match with OGLE-III Catalogue. The single-epoch $JH$ and multi-epoch $K_s$ observations complement the accurate periods and optical $(VI)$ mean-magnitudes from OGLE. The sample consisting of BL Herculis and W Virginis subtypes is used to derive period-luminosity relations after correcting mean-magnitudes for the extinction. Our $K_s$-band period-luminosity relation, $K_s = -2.189(0.056)~[\log(P) - 1] + 11.187(0.032)$, is consistent with published work for BL Herculis and W Virginis variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We present a combined OGLE-III and VVV catalogue with periods, classification, mean magnitudes and extinction for 264 Galactic bulge population II Cepheids having good-quality $K_s$-band light curves. The absolute magnitudes for population II Cepheids and RR Lyraes calibrated using Gaia and Hubble Space Telescope parallaxes, together with calibrated magnitudes for Large Magellanic Cloud population II Cepheids, are used to obtain a distance to the Galactic center, $R_0=8.34\pm0.03{\mathrm{(stat.)}}\pm0.41{\mathrm{(syst.)}}$, which changes by $^{+ 0.05}_{-0.25}$ with different extinction laws. While noting the limitation of small number statistics, we find that the present sample of population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge shows a nearly spheroidal spatial distribution, similar to metal-poor RR Lyrae variables. We do not find evidence of the inclined bar as traced by the metal-rich red-clump stars. The number density for population II Cepheids is more limited as compared to abundant RR Lyraes but they are bright and exhibit a wide range in period that provides a robust period-luminosity relation for an accurate estimate of the distance to the Galactic center.

The growth history has been traced by performing two-component bulge-disc decomposition and further classifying the bulges into pseudos and classicals using Kormendy relation. We have about $27\%$ pseudo and $40\%$ classical bulges in our sample. Classical bulges are brighter than pseudo, in both rest-bands, at all redshifts probed here; in fact since $z\sim0.77$, classical are about $\sim1$ mag brighter than pseudo bulges. Both bulges have witnessed substantial growth, more than half of their present day stellar mass has been gained since $z\sim1$. Their host discs have grown concurrently, becoming progressively brighter in rest-frame I-band.
The high redshift host discs of both pseudo and classical bulges are found to be equally clumpy in rest-frame B-band. In the same band, we found that the growth of classical bulges is accompanied by fading of their host discs - which might be an indication of secular processes in action. However, both host disc as well as the bulge have grown substantially in terms of stellar mass. Our analysis suggests that, clump migration and secular processes alone can not account for the bulge growth, since $z\sim1$, accretion and minor mergers would be required.

We present a comparative analysis of theoretical and observed light curves of Cepheid variables using Fourier decomposition. The theoretical light curves at multiple wavelengths are generated using stellar pulsation models for chemical compositions representative of Cepheids in the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds. The observed light curves at optical ({\it VI}), near-infrared ({\it JHK}$_s$) and mid-infrared (3.6 $\&$ 4.5-$μ$m) bands are compiled from the literature. We discuss the variation of light curve parameters as a function of period, wavelength and metallicity. Theoretical and observed Fourier amplitude parameters decrease with increase in wavelength while the phase parameters increase with wavelength. We find that theoretical amplitude parameters obtained using canonical mass-luminosity levels exhibit a greater offset with respect to observations when compared to non-canonical relations. We also discuss the impact of variation in convective efficiency on the light curve structure of Cepheid variables. The increase in mixing length parameter results in a zero-point offset in bolometric mean magnitudes and reduces the systematic large difference in theoretical amplitudes with respect to observations.

W4 is a giant H{\sc ii} region ionized by the OB stars of the cluster IC~1805. The H{\sc ii} region/cluster complex has been a subject of numerous investigations as it is an excellent laboratory for studying the feedback effect of massive stars on the surrounding region. However, the low-mass stellar content of the cluster IC~1805 remains poorly studied till now. With the aim to unravel the low-mass stellar population of the cluster, we present the results of a multiwavelength study based on deep optical data obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, infrared data from 2MASS, $Spitzer$ Space Telescope and X-ray data from $Chandra$ Space Telescope. The present optical dataset is complete enough to detect stars down to 0.2~M$_\odot$, which is the deepest optical observations so far for the cluster. We identified 384 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs; 101 Class I/II and 283 Class III) within the cluster using various colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. We inferred the mean age of the identified YSOs to be $\sim$ 2.5 Myr and mass in the range 0.3 - 2.5 M$_\odot$. The mass function of our YSO sample has a power law index of -1.23 $\pm$ 0.23, close to the Salpeter value (-1.35), and consistent with those of other star-forming complexes. We explored the disk evolution of the cluster members and found that the diskless sources are relatively older compared to the disk bearing YSO candidates. We examined the effect of high-mass stars on the circumstellar disks and found that within uncertainties, the influence of massive stars on the disk fraction seems to be insignificant. We also studied the spatial correlation of the YSOs with the distribution of gas and dust of the complex to conclude that IC 1805 would have formed in a large filamentary cloud.

We present time-series observations of Population \rom{2} Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud at near-infrared ($JHK_s$) wavelengths. Our sample consists of 81 variables with accurate periods and optical ($VI$) magnitudes from the OGLE survey, covering various subtypes of pulsators (BL Herculis, W Virginis and RV Tauri). We generate light curve templates using high-quality $I$-band data in the LMC from OGLE and $K_s$-band data in the Galactic Bulge from VVV and use them to obtain robust mean magnitudes. We derive Period-Luminosity (P-L) relations in the near-infrared and Period-Wesenheit (P-W) relations by combining optical and near-infrared data. Our P-L and P-W relations are consistent with published work when excluding long-period RV Tauris. We find that Pop II Cepheids and RR Lyraes follow the same P-L relations in the LMC. Therefore, we use trigonometric parallax from the {\it Gaia DR1} for VY~Pyx and the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} parallaxes for $k$~Pav and 5 RR Lyrae variables to obtain an absolute calibration of the Galactic $K_s$-band P-L relation, resulting in a distance modulus to the LMC of $μ_{\rm LMC} = 18.54\pm0.08$~mag. We update the mean magnitudes of Pop~II Cepheids in Galactic globular clusters using our light curve templates and obtain distance estimates to those systems, anchored to a precise late-type eclipsing binary distance to the LMC. We find the distances to these globular clusters based on Pop~II Cepheids are consistent (within $2σ$) with estimates based on the $M_V-[\rm{Fe}/\rm{H}]$ relation for horizontal branch stars.

In a survey conducted between 2011-12 of interstellar Na I D line profiles in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant, a few lines of sight showed dramatic changes in low velocity absorption components with respect to profiles from 1993-1994 reported by Cha & Sembach. Three stars - HD 63578, HD 68217 and HD 76161 showed large decrease in strength over the 1993-2012 interval. HD 68217 and HD 76161 are associated with the Vela SNR whereas HD 63578 is associated with $γ^2$ Velorum wind bubble. Here, we present high spectral resolution observations of Ca II K lines obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) towards these three stars along with simultaneous observations of Na I D lines. These new spectra confirm that the Na D interstellar absorption weakened drastically between 1993-1994 and 2011-2012 but show for the first time that the Ca II K line is unchanged between 1993-1994 and 2015. This remarkable contrast between the behaviour of Na D and Ca II K line absorption lines is a puzzle concerning gas presumably affected by the outflow from the SNR and the wind from $γ^2$ Velorum.

The combination of photometry, spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of the chemically peculiar stars often aims to study the complex physical phenomena such as stellar pulsation, chemical inhomogeneity, magnetic field and their interplay with stellar atmosphere and circumstellar environment. The prime objective of the present study is to determine the atmospheric parameters of a set of Am stars to understand their evolutionary status. Atmospheric abundances and basic parameters are determined using full spectrum fitting technique by comparing the high-resolution spectra to the synthetic spectra. To know the evolutionary status we derive the effective temperature and luminosity from different methods and compare them with the literature. The location of these stars in the H-R diagram demonstrate that all the sample stars are evolved from the Zero-Age-Main-Sequence towards Terminal-Age-Main-Sequence and occupy the region of $δ$ Sct instability strip. The abundance analysis shows that the light elements e.g. Ca and Sc are underabundant while iron peak elements such as Ba, Ce etc. are overabundant and these chemical properties are typical for Am stars. The results obtained from the spectropolarimetric analysis shows that the longitudinal magnetic fields in all the studied stars are negligible that gives further support their Am class of peculiarity.

Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the $(V-R)_{MACHO}$ or $(V-I)$ colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by analyzing the RR Lyraes in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 Region. Multi-epoch data is available for RR Lyraes located within the footprint of the Stripe 82 Region in five ($ugriz$) bands. We present the PC and AC relations at maximum and minimum light in four colors: $(u-g)_0$, $(g-r)_0$, $(r-i)_0$ and $(i-z)_0$, after they are corrected for extinction. We found that the PC and AC relations for this sample of RR Lyraes show a complex nature in the form of flat, linear or quadratic relations. Furthermore, the PC relations at minimum light for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars are separated according to the Oosterhoff type, especially in the $(g-r)_0$ and $(r-i)_0$ colors. If only considering the results from linear regressions, our results are quantitatively consistent with the theory of HIF-photosphere interaction for both fundamental and first overtone RR Lyraes.

We analyse the theoretical light curves of Cepheid variables at optical ({\it UBVRI}) and near-infrared ({\it JKL}) wavelengths using the Fourier decomposition and principal component analysis methods. The Cepheid light curves are based on the full amplitude, nonlinear, convective hydrodynamical models for chemical compositions representative of Cepheids in the Galaxy ($Y=0.28$, $Z=0.02$), Large Magellanic Cloud ($Y=0.25$, $Z=0.008$) and Small Magellanic Cloud ($Y=0.25$, $Z=0.004$). We discuss the variation of light curve parameters with different compositions and mass-luminosity levels as a function of period and wavelength, and compare our results with observations. For a fixed composition, the theoretical amplitude parameters decrease while the phase parameters increase with wavelength, similar to the observed Fourier parameters. The optical amplitude parameters obtained using canonical mass-luminosity Cepheid models, exhibit a large offset with respect to the observations for periods between 7-11 days, when compared to the non-canonical mass-luminosity levels. The central minimum of the Hertzsprung progression for amplitude parameters, shifts to the longer periods with decrease/increase in metallicity/wavelength for both theoretical and observed light curves. The principal components for Magellanic Clouds Cepheid models are consistent with observations at optical wavelengths. We also observe two distinct populations in the first principal component for optical and near-infrared wavelengths while $J$-band contributes to both populations. Finally, we take into account the variation in the convective efficiency by increasing the adopted mixing length parameter from the standard 1.5 to 1.8. This results in a zero-point offset in the bolometric mean magnitudes and in amplitude parameters (except close to 10 days), reducing the systematically large difference in theoretical amplitudes.

We present multi-band Period-Luminosity (PL) relations for first-overtone mode Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We derive optical band PL relations and the Wesenheit function using $VI$ mean magnitudes from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) survey. We cross-match OGLE-III first-overtone mode Cepheids to the 2MASS and SAGE-SMC catalogs to derive PL relations at near-infrared ($JHK_s$) and mid-infrared ($3.6~\&~4.5μ\mathrm{m}$) wavelengths. We test for possible non-linearities in these PL relations using robust statistical tests and find a significant break only in the optical-band PL relations at 2.5 days for first-overtone mode Cepheids. We do not find statistical evidence for a non-linearity in these PL relations at 1 day. The multi-band PL relations for fundamental-mode Cepheids in the SMC also exhibit a break at 2.5 days. We suggest that the period break around 2.5 days is related to sharp changes in the light curve parameters for SMC Cepheids. We also derive new optical and mid-infrared band PL relations for first-overtone mode Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We compare multi-band PL relations for first-overtone mode Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds and find a significant difference in the slope of the $V$-band PL relations but not for $I$-band PL relations. The slope of PL relations are found to be consistent in most of the infrared bands. A relative distance modulus of $Δμ=0.49\pm0.02$~mag between the two clouds is estimated using multi-band PL relations for the first-overtone mode Cepheids in the SMC and LMC.

We present a detailed statistical analysis of possible non-linearities in the Period-Luminosity (P-L), Period-Wesenheit (P-W) and Period-Color (P-C) relations for Cepheid variables in the LMC at optical ($VI$) and near-infrared ($JHK_{s}$) wavelengths. We test for the presence of possible non-linearities and determine their statistical significance by applying a variety of robust statistical tests ($F$-test, Random-Walk, Testimator and the Davies test) to optical data from OGLE III and near-infrared data from LMCNISS. For fundamental-mode Cepheids, we find that the optical P-L, P-W and P-C relations are non-linear at 10 days. The near-infrared P-L and the $W^H_{V,I}$ relations are non-linear around 18 days; this break is attributed to a distinct variation in mean Fourier amplitude parameters near this period for longer wavelengths as compared to optical bands. The near-infrared P-W relations are also non-linear except for the $W_{H,K_s}$ relation. For first-overtone mode Cepheids, a significant change in the slope of P-L, P-W and P-C relations is found around 2.5 days only at optical wavelengths. We determine a global slope of $\textrm{-}3.212\pm0.013$ for the $W^H_{V,I}$ relation by combining our LMC data with observations of Cepheids in Supernovae host galaxies \citep{riess11}. We find this slope to be consistent with the corresponding LMC relation at short periods, and significantly different to the long-period value. We do not find any significant difference in the slope of the global-fit solution using a linear or non-linear LMC P-L relation as calibrator, but the linear version provides a $2\times$ better constraint on the slope and metallicity coefficient.

Context: The full spectrum fitting of stellar spectra against a library of empirical spectra is a well-established approach to measure the atmospheric parameters of FGK stars with a high internal consistency. Extending it towards cooler stars still remains a challenge. Aims: We address this question by improving the interpolator of the MILES (Medium-resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra) library in the low effective temperature regime (Tefff < 4800 K), and we refine the determination of the parameters of the cool MILES stars. Methods: We use the ULySS package to determine the atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg and [Fe/H]), and measure the biases of the results with respect to our updated compilation of parameters calibrated against theoretical spectra. After correcting some systematic effects, we compute a new interpolator that we finally use to redetermine the atmospheric parameters homogeneously and assess the biases. Results: Based on an updated literature compilation, we determine Teff in a more accurate and unbiased manner compared to those determined with the original interpolator. The validity range is extended downwards to about Teff = 2900 K compared to 3500 K previously. The mean residual biases on Teff, logg, and [Fe/H], with respect to the literature compilation for the coolest stars (Teff <= 3800 K) computed using the new interpolator, are -15 K, -0.02 dex, and 0.02 dex respectively. The corresponding estimations of the external precision are 63 K, 0.23 dex, and 0.15 dex respectively. For the stars with Teff in the range 3800 - 4200 K, the determinations of Teff and [Fe/H] have been slightly improved. At higher temperatures, the new interpolator is comparable to the original one. The new version of the interpolator is publicly available.

We use published OGLE LMC/SMC data to present comprehensive Period-Color (PC) and Amplitude-Color (AC) relations for both fundamental and overtone stars. For fundamental mode stars, we confirm earlier work that the minimum light extinction corrected PC relation in V-I has a shallow slope but with considerable scatter (LMC: $[0.093 \pm 0.019]$ with a standard deviation about this line of 0.116, SMC: $[0.055\pm0.058]$ with a standard deviation about this line of 0.099). We note the high scatter about this line for both the LMC and SMC: either there is some source of uncertainty in extinction or some other physical parameter is responsible for this dispersion. We compare with previous results and discuss some possible causes for this scatter. In contrast, RRc overtone stars do not obey a flat PC relation at minimum light (LMC: $[0.604 \pm 0.041]$ with a standard deviation about this line of 0.109, SMC: $[0.472 \pm 0.265]$ with a standard deviation about this line of 0.091). The fact that fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars obey a flat relation at minimum light and overtone RR Lyrae stars do not is consistent with the interaction of the stellar photosphere and hydrogen ionization front. We compare these results with PC relations for fundamental and first overtone Cepheids. The fact that the PC relations change significantly as a function of phase indicates strongly that Cepheid and RR Lyrae relations can only be understood at mean light when their properties as a function of phase are determined.
