Direct atmospheric retrievals of exoplanets at high-resolution have recently allowed for a more detailed characterisation of their chemistry and dynamics from the ground. By monitoring the longitudinal distribution of species, as well as the varying vertical temperature structure and dynamics between the limbs of WASP-76b, across multiple transits, we aim to enhance our understanding of the 3D nature and chemical/dynamical evolution of such objects over the timescales of months/years. We present retrievals of three VLT/ESPRESSO observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b, including one not yet reported in the literature, from which we constrain the atmospheric abundances, vertical temperature structure, and atmospheric dynamics for both the leading and trailing limbs of the atmosphere separately, via novel rotational broadening kernels. We confirm the presence of VO recently reported in the atmosphere of WASP-76b. We find a uniform longitudinal distribution of Fe and Mg across the limbs of the atmosphere, for each of our transits, consistent with previous works as well as with stellar values. We constrain substellar Na/Fe and Cr/Fe ratios across each of our transits, consistent with previous studies of WASP-76b. Where constrained, V/Fe and VO/Fe ratios were also found to be broadly consistent between the limbs of the atmosphere for each of the transits, as well as with previous studies. However, for two of the transits, both V and VO were unconstrained in the leading limb, suggesting possible depletion due to recombination and condensation. The consistency of our constraints across multiple high-resolution observations, as well as with previous studies using varying modelling/retrieval frameworks and/or instruments, affirms the efficacy of high-resolution ground-based retrievals of exoplanetary atmospheres.

The use of Gaussian processes (GPs) is a common approach to account for correlated noise in exoplanet time series, particularly for transmission and emission spectroscopy. This analysis has typically been performed for each wavelength channel separately, with the retrieved uncertainties in the transmission spectrum assumed to be independent. However, the presence of noise correlated in wavelength could cause these uncertainties to be correlated, which could significantly affect the results of atmospheric retrievals. We present a method that uses a GP to model noise correlated in both wavelength and time simultaneously for the full spectroscopic dataset while avoiding the use of a 'common-mode' correction. To make this analysis computationally tractable, we introduce a new fast and flexible GP method that can analyse 2D datasets when the input points lie on a (potentially non-uniform) 2D grid - in our case a time by wavelength grid - and the kernel function has a Kronecker product structure. This simultaneously fits all light curves and enables the retrieval of the covariance matrix of the transmission spectrum. By testing on synthetic datasets, we demonstrate that our new approach can reliably recover atmospheric features contaminated by noise correlated in time and wavelength. In contrast, fitting each spectroscopic light curve separately performed poorly when wavelength-correlated noise was present. It frequently underestimated the uncertainty of the scattering slope and overestimated the uncertainty in the strength of sharp absorption peaks in transmission spectra. Two archival VLT/FORS2 transit observations of WASP-31b were re-analysed, with our method strongly constraining the presence of wavelength-correlated noise in both datasets and recovering significantly different constraints on atmospheric features such as the scattering slope and strength of sodium and potassium features.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance across various information-seeking and reasoning tasks. These computational systems drive state-of-the-art dialogue systems, such as ChatGPT and Bard. They also carry substantial promise in meeting the growing demands of mental health care, albeit relatively unexplored. As such, this study sought to examine LLMs' capability to generate empathetic responses in conversations that emulate those in a mental health counselling setting. We selected five LLMs: version 3.5 and version 4 of the Generative Pre-training (GPT), Vicuna FastChat-T5, Pathways Language Model (PaLM) version 2, and Falcon-7B-Instruct. Based on a simple instructional prompt, these models responded to utterances derived from the EmpatheticDialogues (ED) dataset. Using three empathy-related metrics, we compared their responses to those from traditional response generation dialogue systems, which were fine-tuned on the ED dataset, along with human-generated responses. Notably, we discovered that responses from the LLMs were remarkably more empathetic in most scenarios. We position our findings in light of catapulting advancements in creating empathetic conversational systems.

The characterization of exoplanet atmospheres has proven to be successful using high-resolution spectroscopy. Phase curve observations of hot/ultra-hot Jupiters can reveal their compositions and thermal structures, thereby allowing the detection of molecules and atoms in the planetary atmosphere using the cross-correlation technique. We present pre-eclipse observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter, MASCARA-1b, observed with the recently upgraded CRIRES+ high-resolution infrared spectrograph at the VLT. We report a detection of $\rm Fe$ ($\approx$8.3$σ$) in the K-band and confirm previous detections of $\rm CO$ (>15$σ$) and $\rm H_2O$ (>10$σ$) in the day-side atmosphere of MASCARA-1b. Using a Bayesian inference framework, we retrieve the abundances of the detected species and constrain planetary orbital velocities, $T$-$P$ profiles, and the carbon-to-oxygen ratio ($\rm C/O$). A free retrieval results in an elevated $\rm CO$ abundance ($\log_{10}$($χ_{\rm{{}^{12}CO}}$) = $-2.85^{+0.57}_{-0.69}$), leading to a super-solar $\rm C/O$ ratio. More realistically, allowing for vertically-varying chemistry in the atmosphere by incorporating a chemical-equilibrium model results in a $\rm C/O$ of $0.68^{+0.12}_{-0.22}$ and a metallicity of $[\rm M/H] = 0.62^{+0.28}_{-0.55}$, both consistent with solar values. Finally, we also report a slight offset of the $\rm Fe$ feature in both K$_{\rm p}$ and v$_{\rm sys}$ that could be a signature of atmospheric dynamics. Due to the 3D structure of exoplanet atmospheres and the exclusion of time/phase dependence in our 1D forward models, further follow-up observations and analysis are required to confirm or refute this result.

LLMs have shown promise in replicating human-like behavior in crowdsourcing tasks that were previously thought to be exclusive to human abilities. However, current efforts focus mainly on simple atomic tasks. We explore whether LLMs can replicate more complex crowdsourcing pipelines. We find that modern LLMs can simulate some of crowdworkers' abilities in these "human computation algorithms," but the level of success is variable and influenced by requesters' understanding of LLM capabilities, the specific skills required for sub-tasks, and the optimal interaction modality for performing these sub-tasks. We reflect on human and LLMs' different sensitivities to instructions, stress the importance of enabling human-facing safeguards for LLMs, and discuss the potential of training humans and LLMs with complementary skill sets. Crucially, we show that replicating crowdsourcing pipelines offers a valuable platform to investigate (1) the relative strengths of LLMs on different tasks (by cross-comparing their performances on sub-tasks) and (2) LLMs' potential in complex tasks, where they can complete part of the tasks while leaving others to humans.

Multi-camera multiple people tracking has become an increasingly important area of research due to the growing demand for accurate and efficient indoor people tracking systems, particularly in settings such as retail, healthcare centers, and transit hubs. We proposed a novel multi-camera multiple people tracking method that uses anchor-guided clustering for cross-camera re-identification and spatio-temporal consistency for geometry-based cross-camera ID reassigning. Our approach aims to improve the accuracy of tracking by identifying key features that are unique to every individual and utilizing the overlap of views between cameras to predict accurate trajectories without needing the actual camera parameters. The method has demonstrated robustness and effectiveness in handling both synthetic and real-world data. The proposed method is evaluated on CVPR AI City Challenge 2023 dataset, achieving IDF1 of 95.36% with the first-place ranking in the challenge. Recent progress in high-resolution transmission spectroscopy has offered new avenues in which to characterise the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets. High-resolution cross-correlation spectroscopy allows for the unambiguous detection of molecules/atoms. It has also been used to map both atmospheric dynamics and longitudinal variations in the abundance of species across the morning and evening limbs. We present multiple VLT/ESPRESSO observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b, from which we constrain relative abundances of various neutral metals consistently across all observations, whilst accounting for the distortion of the exoplanet's signal caused by traditional data processing techniques. We also constrain planetary orbital velocities and $T$-$P$ profiles. We compare our abundance constraints with previous constraints using VLT/UVES transmission spectroscopy of WASP-121b, and find our results to be consistent between observations, and also in agreement with stellar values for species previously detected in the atmosphere of WASP-121b. Our retrieval framework can also be used to identify potential exospheric species, resulting in extended absorption features beyond the transit equivalent Roche limit of WASP-121b ($R_{\rm eqRL}$ $\sim$ 1.3 $R_{\rm p}$). H$α$, Fe II, and Ca II were found to extend to high altitudes ($1.54\pm0.04$ $R_{\rm p}$, $1.17\pm0.01$ $R_{\rm p}$, and $2.52\pm0.34$ $R_{\rm p}$, respectively), which are broadly consistent with literature values. The consistency of our constraints across multiple high-resolution observations is a strong validation of our model filtering and retrieval framework, as well as the stability of the atmosphere over the timescales of months/years, and could allow for planet formation processes to be inferred from future ground-based observations of exoplanetary atmospheres.

Empathy is a vital factor that contributes to mutual understanding, and joint problem-solving. In recent years, a growing number of studies have recognized the benefits of empathy and started to incorporate empathy in conversational systems. We refer to this topic as empathetic conversational systems. To identify the critical gaps and future opportunities in this topic, this paper examines this rapidly growing field using five review dimensions: (i) conceptual empathy models and frameworks, (ii) adopted empathy-related concepts, (iii) datasets and algorithmic techniques developed, (iv) evaluation strategies, and (v) state-of-the-art approaches. The findings show that most studies have centered on the use of the EMPATHETICDIALOGUES dataset, and the text-based modality dominates research in this field. Studies mainly focused on extracting features from the messages of the users and the conversational systems, with minimal emphasis on user modeling and profiling. Notably, studies that have incorporated emotion causes, external knowledge, and affect matching in the response generation models, have obtained significantly better results. For implementation in diverse real-world settings, we recommend that future studies should address key gaps in areas of detecting and authenticating emotions at the entity level, handling multimodal inputs, displaying more nuanced empathetic behaviors, and encompassing additional dialogue system features.

Atomic-scale control of spins by electric fields is highly desirable for future technological applications. Magnetically-doped Aurivillius-phase oxides present one route to achieve this, with magnetic ions substituted into the ferroelectric structure at dilute concentrations, resulting in spin-charge coupling. However, there has been minimal exploration of the ferroelectric switching pathways in this materials class, limiting predictions of the influence of an electric field on the magnetic spins in the structure. Here, we determine the ferroelectric switching pathways of the end member of the Aurivilius phase family, Bi2WO6, using a combination of group theoretic analysis and density functional theory calculations. We find that in the ground state P21ab phase, a two-step switching pathway via C2 and Cm intermediate phases provides the lowest energy barrier. Considering iron substitutions on the W-site in Bi2WO6, we determine the spin easy axis. By tracking the change in spin directionality during ferroelectric switching, we find that a 90 degree switch in the polarization direction leads to a 112 degree reorientation of the spin easy axis. The low symmetry crystal-field environment of Bi2WO6 and magnetoelastic coupling on the magnetic dopant provide a route to spin control via and applied electric field.

Cu$_2$ZnSnS$_4$ is an earth-abundant photovoltaic absorber material predicted to provide a sustainable solution for commercial solar applications. One of the main limitations restricting its commercialization is the issue of cation disorder. Raman spectroscopy has been a sought after technique to characterize disorder in CZTS while a clear consensus between theoretical and experimental results is yet to be achieved. In the present study, via the virtual crystal approximation, we take into account the progressive nature of Cu-Zn disorder in CZTS: we obtain the phonon frequencies at zone-center within the density functional perturbation theory formalism, and further compute the Raman spectra for the disordered phases, achieving a consensus between theory and experiment. These calculations confirm the presence of complete disorder in Cu-Zn 2$a$, 2$c$ and 2$d$ Wyckoff sites. They also show that the Raman intensities of two prominent $A$ phonon modes characterized by motion of S atoms, also known to be experimentally significant, play a key role in understanding the nature of disorder in CZTS.

Increasing participation of prosumers in the electricity grid calls for efficient operational strategies for utilizing the flexibility offered by Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to match supply and demand. This paper investigates the coordination performance of a recently proposed coordination scheme for deferrable loads: Forecast Mediated Market Based Control (F-MBC). Enhancements are made to the simulation setup to enable an analysis of performance in realistic scenarios, with heterogeneous loads and an open-ended simulation horizon. Operational scenarios were formulated to showcase the ability of F-MBC to schedule heterogeneous populations of deferrable loads with dynamic load profiles, supported by a mix of renewable and flexible generation. Availability patterns of devices were generated to take into account varying user preferences. Simulation results indicate that F-MBC was able to achieve good distributed scheduling performance for devices with a high initial power consumption. However, performance for devices with low initial power consumption has been found to be less satisfactory. Several directions for further improvement of the F-MBC scheme and its applications are identified.

Feature attributions are a popular tool for explaining the behavior of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), but have recently been shown to be vulnerable to attacks that produce divergent explanations for nearby inputs. This lack of robustness is especially problematic in high-stakes applications where adversarially-manipulated explanations could impair safety and trustworthiness. Building on a geometric understanding of these attacks presented in recent work, we identify Lipschitz continuity conditions on models' gradient that lead to robust gradient-based attributions, and observe that smoothness may also be related to the ability of an attack to transfer across multiple attribution methods. To mitigate these attacks in practice, we propose an inexpensive regularization method that promotes these conditions in DNNs, as well as a stochastic smoothing technique that does not require re-training. Our experiments on a range of image models demonstrate that both of these mitigations consistently improve attribution robustness, and confirm the role that smooth geometry plays in these attacks on real, large-scale models.

The network structure of the communication graph resembled a tight crowd network, with Nature journals playing a major part. Information sources such as news portals and scientific organizations were mentioned more in tweets, than academic journal Twitter accounts. Journals with high journal impact factors (JIFs) were found to be prominent hubs in the communication graph. Scholarly communication has the scope to transcend the limitations of the physical world through social media extended coverage and shortened information paths. Accordingly, publishers have created profiles for their journals in Twitter to promote their publications and to initiate discussions with public. This paper investigates the Twitter presence of humanities and social sciences (HSS) journal titles obtained from mainstream citation indices, by analysing the interaction and communication patterns. This study utilizes webometric data collection, descriptive analysis, and social network analysis. Findings indicate that the presence of HSS journals in Twitter across disciplines is not yet substantial. Sharing of general websites appears to be the key activity performed by HSS journals in Twitter. Among them, web content from news portals and magazines are highly disseminated. Sharing of research articles and retweeting was not majorly observed. Inter-journal communication is apparent within the same citation index, but it is very minimal with journals from the other index. However, there seems to be an effort to broaden communication beyond the research community, reaching out to connect with the public.

To improve the understanding of this discrepancy we investigate the structural, dynamical, and dielectric of the three main phases of CZTS (kesterite, stannite, and PMCA) using density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). The effect of the exchange-correlation functional on the computed properties is analyzed. A qualitative agreement of the theoretical Raman spectrum with measurements is observed. However, none of the phases correspond to the experimental spectrum within the error bar that is usually to be expected for DFPT. This corroborates the need to consider cation disorder and other lattice defects extensively in this material.

A semi-quantitative explanation for large scale pattern formation consisting of small scale closely arranged droplets inside the large scale distorted ring of droplets is presented in this paper. The scale at which the influence of constraints become dominant is also determined in this study. It is seen that the underlying roughness has a larger impact than the nature of polymer on pore size. Comparative studies of pore patterns formed on smooth and constrained substrates are reported. Twitter as a micro-blogging platform rose to instant fame mainly due to its minimalist features that allow seamless communication between users. As the conversations grew thick and faster, a placeholder feature called as Hashtags became important as it captured the themes behind the tweets. Prior studies have investigated the conversation dynamics, inter-play with other media platforms and communication patterns between users for specific event-based hashtags such as the #Occupy movement. Commonplace hashtags which are used on a daily basis have been largely ignored due to their seemingly innocuous presence in tweets and also due to the lack of connection with real-world events. However, it can be postulated that utility of these hashtags is the main reason behind their continued usage. This study is aimed at understanding the rationale behind the usage of a particular type of commonplace hashtags - location hashtags such as country and city name hashtags. Tweets with the hashtag #singapore were extracted for one week duration. Manual and automatic tweet classification was performed along with social network analysis, to identify the underlying themes. Seven themes were identified. Findings indicate that the hashtag is prominent in tweets about local events, local news, users current location and landmark related information sharing. Users who share content from social media sites such as Instagram make use of the hashtag in a more prominent way when compared to users who post textual content. News agencies, commercial bodies and celebrities make use of the hashtag more than common individuals. Overall, the results show the non-conversational nature of the hashtag. The findings are to be validated with other country names and cross-validated with hashtag data from other social media platforms.

The subject area of this report is Linked Data and its application to the Government domain. Linked Data is an alternative method of data representation that aims to interlink data from varied sources through relationships. Governments around the world have started publishing their data in this format to assist citizens in making better use of public services. This report provides an eight step migrational framework for converting Singapore Government data from legacy systems to Linked Data format. The framework formulation is based on a study of the Singapore data ecosystem with help from Infocomm Development Authority (iDA) of Singapore. Each step in the migrational framework has been constructed with objectives, recommendations, best practices and issues with entry and exit points. This work builds on the existing Linked Data literature, implementations in other countries and cookbooks provided by Linked Data researchers. iDA can use this report to gain an understanding of the effort and work involved in the implementation of Linked Data system on top of their legacy systems. The framework can be evaluated by building a Proof of Concept (POC) application.
