We review the Alicki-Fannes-Winter technique to obtain a uniform continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy in states that are a mix of pure states with bounded energy, using this bound we conclude that for a Hamiltonian satisfying the Gibb's hypothesis such states cannot exist.

Abstract:
We show that the 1-h-minimal fields satisfy a property of naive compactness for decreasing definable families of closed bounded sets indexed by the value group. We use this to prove that a local topological definable group has a definable family of neighborhoods of the identity consisting of open subgroups.

A classical scenario suggests that ULIRGs transform colliding spiral galaxies into a spheroid dominated early-type galaxy. Recent high-resolution simulations have instead shown that, under some circumstances, rotation disks can be preserved during the merging process or rapidly regrown after coalescence. Our goal is to analyze in detail the ionised gas kinematics in a sample of ULIRGs to infer the incidence of gas rotational dynamics in late-stage interacting galaxies and merger remnants. We analysed MUSE data of a sample of 20 nearby (z<0.165) ULIRGs, as part of the "Physics of ULIRGs with MUSE and ALMA" (PUMA) project. We found that 27% individual nuclei are associated with kpc-scale disk-like gas motions. The rest of the sample displays a plethora of gas kinematics, dominated by winds and merger-induced flows, which make the detection of rotation signatures difficult. On the other hand, the incidence of stellar disk-like motions is ~2 times larger than gaseous disks, as the former are probably less affected by winds and streams. The eight galaxies with a gaseous disk present relatively high intrinsic gas velocity dispersion (sigma = 30-85 km/s), rotationally-supported motions (with gas rotation velocity over velocity dispersion vrot/sigma > 1-8), and dynamical masses in the range (2-7)x1e10 Msun. By combining our results with those of local and high-z disk galaxies from the literature, we found a significant correlation between sigma and the offset from the main sequence (MS), after correcting for their evolutionary trends. Our results confirm the presence of kpc-scale rotating disks in interacting galaxies and merger remnants, with an incidence going from 27% (gas) to ~50% (stars). The ULIRGs gas velocity dispersion is up to a factor of ~4 higher than in local normal MS galaxies, similar to high-z starbursts as presented in the literature.

In this work we perform a detailed theoretical and experimental investigation of an atomic memory based on recoil-induced resonance in cold cesium atoms. We consider the interaction of a nearly degenerated pump and probe beams with an ensemble of two-level atoms. A full theoretical density matrix calculation in the extended Hilbert space of the internal and external atomic degrees of freedom allows us to obtain, from first principles, the transient and stationary responses determining the probe transmission and the forward four-wave mixing spectra. These two signals are generated together at the same order of perturbation with respect to the intensities of pump and probe beams. However, during continuous excitation of the sample, they are detected in very different ways and the signal at the probe transmission appears to be considerably larger, being the main focus of investigation prior to this work. Moreover, we have investigated the storage of optical information in the atomic external degrees of freedom, which provided a simple interpretation for the previously-reported non-volatile character of this memory. The retrieved signals after storage reveal the equivalent role of probe transmission and four-wave mixing, as the two signals have similar amplitudes. Probe transmission and forward four-wave-mixing spectra were then experimentally measured for both continuous excitation and after storage. The experimental observations are in good agreement with the developed theory and open a new pathway for the reversible exchange of optical information with atomic systems.

We analyse the star formation (SF) relations in a sample of 16 nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with more than 2800 regions defined on scales of 90 to 500 pc. We used ALMA to map the distribution of the cold molecular gas traced by the J = 2-1 line of CO and archival PaαHST/NICMOS imaging to trace the recent SF. In four objects, we find two different branches in the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation at 90 pc scales, suggesting the existence of a duality in this relation. The two branches correspond to two different dynamical environments within each galaxy. One branch, which corresponds to the central region of these galaxies 90% of the regions are located at radii < 0.85 kpc), shows higher gas and star formation rate surface densities with higher velocity dispersion. The other branch, which shows lower molecular gas and SF rate surface densities, corresponds to the more external disk regions (r $\sim$ 1 kpc). Despite the scatter, the SF efficiency of the galaxies with a dual behaviour increases with increasing boundedness as measured by the b parameter (b $\equiv$ $Σ_{H_{2}}$/$σ^{2}$ $\propto$ $α_{vir}^{-1}$). At larger spatial scales (250 and 500 pc), the duality disappears. The rest of the sample does not show evidence of this dual behaviour at any scale.

In this work we use seeing-limited SINFONI H- and K-band spectroscopy to analyse the spatially resolved kinematics of the stellar component in the inner r<1-2 kpc of ten nearby (mean z=0.014) LIRGs. We compare the stellar kinematics with those for different gas phases, and analyse the relative effects of using different tracers when estimating dynamical masses. The stellar velocity and velocity dispersion maps are extracted in both near-IR bands by fitting the continuum emission using pPXF while we use the gas kinematics from previous works. We find that the different gas phases have similar kinematics, whereas the stellar component is rotating with slightly lower velocities (V$_*$~0.8V$_g$) but in significantly warmer orbits ($σ_*$~2$σ_g$) than the gas phases. These values indicate that stars are rotating in thick discs while the gas phases are confined in dynamically cooler rotating discs. However, these differences do not lead to significant discrepancies between the dynamical mass estimations based on the stellar and gas kinematics. This result suggests that the gas kinematics can be used to estimate M$_{dyn}$ also in z~2 SFGs, a galaxy population that shares many structural and kinematic properties with local LIRGs.

Ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are characterised by extreme starburst (SB) and AGN activity, and are therefore ideal laboratories for studying the outflow phenomena. We have recently started a project called Physics of ULIRGs with MUSE and ALMA (PUMA), which is a survey of 25 nearby (z < 0.165) ULIRGs observed with the integral field spectrograph MUSE and the interferometer ALMA. This sample includes systems with both AGN and SB nuclear activity in the pre- and post-coalescence phases of major mergers. The main goals of the project are to study the prevalence of multi-phase outflows as a function of the galaxy properties, to constrain the driving mechanisms of the outflows (e.g. distinguish between SB and AGN winds), and to identify feedback effects on the host galaxy. In this first paper, we present details on the sample selection, MUSE observations, and derive first data products. MUSE data were analysed to study the dynamical status of each of the 21 ULIRGs observed so far, taking the stellar kinematics and the morphological properties inferred from MUSE narrow-band images into account. We also located the ULIRG nuclei, using near-IR (HST) and mm (ALMA) data, and studied their optical spectra to infer the ionisation state through BPT diagnostics, and outflows in both ionised and neutral gas. We show that the morphological and stellar kinematic classifications are consistent: post-coalescence systems are more likely associated with ordered motions, while interacting (binary) systems are dominated by non-ordered and streaming motions. We also find broad and asymmetric [OIII] and NaID profiles in almost all nuclear spectra, with line widths in the range 300-2000 km/s, possibly associated with AGN- and SB-driven winds. This result reinforces previous findings that indicated that outflows are ubiquitous during the pre- and post-coalescence phases of major mergers.

Arp220 is the nearest and prototypical ULIRG, and shows evidence of pc-scale molecular outflows in its nuclear regions and strongly perturbed ionised gas kinematics on kpc scales. It is therefore the ideal system for investigating outflows and feedback phenomena in details. We investigate the feedback effects on the Arp220 ISM, deriving a detailed picture of the atomic gas in terms of physical and kinematic properties, with a spatial resolution never obtained before (0.56", i.e. ~ 210 pc). We use optical IFS observations from VLT/MUSE-AO to obtain spatially resolved stellar and gas kinematics, for both ionised ([N II]6583) and neutral (Na ID5891,96) components; we also derive dust attenuation, electron density, ionisation conditions and hydrogen column density maps to characterise the ISM properties. Arp220 kinematics reveal the presence of a disturbed, kpc-scale disk in the innermost nuclear regions, and highly perturbed, multi-phase (neutral and ionised) gas along the minor-axis of the disk, which we interpret as a galactic-scale outflow emerging from the Arp220 eastern nucleus. This outflow involves velocities up to ~ 1000 km/s at galactocentric distances of ~ 5 kpc, and has a mass rate of ~ 50 Msun/yr, and kinetic and momentum power of ~ 1e43 erg/s and ~ 1e35 dyne, respectively. The inferred energetics do not allow us to distinguish the origin of the outflows, i.e. whether they are AGN-driven or starburst-driven. We also present evidence for enhanced star formation at the edges of - and within - the outflow, with a star formation rate SFR ~ 5 Msun/yr (i.e. ~ 2% of the total SFR). Our findings suggest the presence of powerful winds in Arp220: they might be capable of removing or heating large amounts of gas from the host ("negative feedback"), but could be also responsible for triggering star formation ("positive feedback").

We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $σ= (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

(2019). The high-velocity gas component is identified by the detection of very broad emission wings in the Halpha line, with Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) > 850-1000 kms-1. Such gas kinematics are outstandingly high compared to other HII regions in local galaxies and similar to those reported in some star-forming clumps of galaxies at redshift around 2. The spatially resolved analysis indicates that the high velocity gas extends at least 90 pc and it could be compatible with an ionized outflow entraining gas at a rate 7 - 9 times larger than the rate at which gas is being converted into stars. We do not detect broad emission wings in other emission lines such as Hbeta, maybe due to moderate dust extinction, nor in [NII]6548, 6584 and [SII]6717, 6731, which could be caused by the presence of turbulent mixing layers originated by the impact of fast-flowing winds. The lack of spectral signatures associated to the presence of Wolf-Rayet stars points towards stellar winds from a large number of massive stars and/or supernovae as the likely mechanisms driving the high velocity gas.

These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are $N \to \ell^{\pm}_α π^{\mp}$ and $N \to \ell^+_α \ell^-_β ν(\barν)$ ($α,β=e,μ$). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heavy neutrinos to electron-, muon- and tau- flavoured currents ($U_e^2$, $U_μ^2$, $U_τ^2$) as a function of the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $U_e^2 < 10^{-9}$ at $90\%$ C.L. for a mass of $390$ MeV/c$^2$. These constraints are competitive with previous experiments.

We perform a search for light sterile neutrinos using the data from the T2K far detector at a baseline of 295 km, with an exposure of 14.7 (7.6)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. A selection of neutral current interaction samples are also used to enhance the sensitivity to sterile mixing. No evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 3+1 model was found from a simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon, electron and neutral current neutrino samples. We set the most stringent limit on the sterile oscillation amplitude $\sin^2θ_{24}$ for the sterile neutrino mass splitting $Δm^2_{41}<3\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2/c^4$.

Neutrino neutral-current induced single photon production is a sub-leading order process for accelerator-based neutrino beam experiments including T2K. It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the fine-grained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron-positron pairs, we achieved 95\% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738$\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of neutral current induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114$\times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ (90\% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of $\left<E_ν\right>\sim 0.6$ GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1 GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals.

In this document, we present the Technical Design Report of the Upgrade of the T2K Near Detector ND280. The goal of this upgrade is to improve the Near Detector performance to measure the neutrino interaction rate and to constrain the neutrino interaction cross-sections so that the uncertainty in the number of predicted events at Super-Kamiokande is reduced to about 4%. This will allow to improve the physics reach of the T2K-II project. This goal is achieved by modifying the upstream part of the detector, adding a new highly granular scintillator detector (Super-FGD), two new TPCs (High-Angle TPC) and six TOF planes. Details about the detector concepts, design and construction methods are presented, as well as a first look at the test-beam data taken in Summer 2018. An update of the physics studies is also presented.

We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner $\sim$200\,pc radius of NGC4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40-80pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t $\leq$ 50Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50Myr $<$ t $\leq$ 2Gyr) both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-like structure, surrounding the blob of young stars. Our results indicate star formation has occurred through multiple bursts in this source. Furthermore, the youngest stellar populations (t $\lesssim$ 2Gyr) are distributed along a circumnuclear star-forming ring with r$\sim$250pc. The ring displays star formation rates (SFRs) in the range of 0.002-0.14M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, favoring the `pearls-on-a-string' scenario. The old underlying bulge stellar population component (t $>$ 2Gyr) is distributed outside the two blob structures. For the nuclear region (inner $\sim$60pc radius) we derived a SFR of 0.43\,M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ and found no signatures of non-thermal featureless continuum and hot dust emission, supporting the scenario in which a LLAGN/LINER-like source is hidden in the centre of NGC4303. Thus, our results reveal a rather complex star formation history in NGC4303, with different stellar population components coexisting with a low efficiency accreting black hole in its centre.

With this work, the total number of QSO2 at $z<1$ with parametrized galaxies increases from $\sim$35 to 76. Our analysis is based on HST WFPC2 and ACS images that we fit with {\sc GALFIT}. HLSy2 and QSO2 show a wide diversity of galaxy hosts. The main difference lies in the higher incidence of highly-disturbed systems among QSO2. This is consistent with a scenario in which galaxy interactions are the dominant mechanism triggering nuclear activity at the highest AGN power. There is a strong dependence of galaxy properties with AGN power (assuming $L_ {\rm [OIII]}$ is an adequate proxy). The relative contribution of the spheroidal component to the total galaxy light (B/T) increases with $L_ {\rm [OIII]}$. While systems dominated by the spheoridal component spread across the total range of $L_ {\rm [OIII]}$, most disk-dominated galaxies concentrate at log($L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\odot})<$8.6. This is expected if more powerful AGN are powered by more massive black holes which are hosted by more massive bulges or spheroids. The average galaxy sizes ($\langle r_{\rm e} \rangle$) are 5.0$\pm$1.5 kpc for HLSy2 and 3.9$\pm$0.6 kpc for HLSy2 and QSO2 respectively. These are significantly smaller than those found for QSO1 and narrow line radio galaxies at similar $z$. We put the results of our work in context of related studies of AGN with quasar-like luminosities.

While the deformable mirror performing real-time correction of the atmospheric disturbances is located within the telescope itself, the instrument contains a suite of state-of-the-art and innovative wavefront sensor systems. Laser guide star sensors (LGSS) are located at the entrance of the instrument and fed by a dichroic beam splitter, while the various natural guide star sensors for LTAO and SCAO are located close to the science focal plane. We present opto-mechanical architecture and design at PDR level for these wavefront sensor systems.

We present new CO(2-1) observations of 3 low-z (~350 Mpc) ULIRG systems (6 nuclei) observed with ALMA at high-spatial resolution (~500 pc). We detect massive cold molecular gas outflows in 5 out of 6 nuclei (0.3-5)x10^8 Msun. These outflows are spatially resolved with deprojected radii of 0.25-1 kpc although high-velocity molecular gas is detected up to ~0.5-1.8 kpc (1-6 kpc deprojected). The mass outflow rates are 12-400 Msun/yr and the inclination corrected average velocity of the outflowing gas 350-550 km/s (v_max = 500-900 km/s). The origin of these outflows can be explained by the nuclear starbursts although the contribution of an obscured AGN can not be completely ruled out. The position angle (PA) of the outflowing gas along the kinematic minor axis of the nuclear molecular disk suggests that the outflow axis is perpendicular to the disk for three of these outflows. Only in one case, the outflow PA is clearly not along the kinematic minor axis. The outflow depletion times are 15-80 Myr which are slightly shorter than the star-formation (SF) depletion times (30-80 Myr). However, we estimate that only 15-30% of the outflowing gas will escape the gravitational potential of the nucleus. The majority of the outflowing gas will return to the disk after 5-10 Myr and become available to form new stars. Therefore, these outflows will not likely quench the nuclear starbursts. These outflows would be consistent with being driven by radiation pressure (momentum-driven) only if the coupling between radiation and dust increases with increasing SF rates. This can be achieved if the dust optical depth is higher in objects with higher SF. The relatively small sizes (<1 kpc) and dynamical times (<3 Myr) of the cold molecular outflows suggests that molecular gas cannot survive longer in the outflow environment or that it cannot form efficiently beyond these distances or times. This paper reports measurements of final-state proton multiplicity, muon and proton kinematics, and their correlations in charged-current pionless neutrino interactions, measured by the T2K ND280 near detector in its plastic scintillator (C$_8$H$_8$) target. The data were taken between years 2010 and 2013, corresponding to approximately 6$\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Thanks to their exploration of the proton kinematics and of kinematic imbalances between the proton and muon kinematics, the results offer a novel probe of the nuclear-medium effects most pertinent to the (sub-)GeV neutrino-nucleus interactions that are used in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation measurements. These results are compared to many neutrino-nucleus interaction models which all fail to describe at least part of the observed phase space. In case of events without a proton above a detection threshold in the final state, a fully consistent implementation of the local Fermi gas model with multinucleon interactions gives the best description of the data. In the case of at least one proton in the final state the spectral function model agrees well with the data, most notably when measuring the kinematic imbalance between the muon and the proton in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino. A clear indication of existence of multinucleon interactions is observed. The effect of final-state interactions is also discussed.

The T2K experiment reports an updated analysis of neutrino and antineutrino oscillations in appearance and disappearance channels. A sample of electron neutrino candidates at Super-Kamiokande in which a pion decay has been tagged is added to the four single-ring samples used in previous T2K oscillation analyses. Through combined analyses of these five samples, simultaneous measurements of four oscillation parameters, $|Δm^2_{32}|$, $\sin^2(θ_{23})$, $\sin^2(θ_{13})$, and $δ_{CP}$ and of the mass ordering are made. A set of studies of simulated data indicates that the sensitivity to the oscillation parameters is not limited by neutrino interaction model uncertainty. Multiple oscillation analyses are performed, and frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of the oscillation parameters with and without the inclusion of reactor constraints on $\sin^2(θ_{13})$. When combined with reactor measurements, the hypothesis of CP conservation ($δ_{CP}$$=0$ or $π$) is excluded at 90% confidence level. The 90% confidence region for $δ_{CP}$ is [-2.95,-0.44] ([-1.47, -1.27]) for normal (inverted) ordering. The central values and 68\% confidence intervals for the other oscillation parameters for normal (inverted) ordering are $Δm^{2}_{32}=2.54\pm0.08$ ($2.51\pm0.08$) $\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2 / c^4$ and $\sin^2(θ_{23}) = 0.55^{+0.05}_{-0.09}$ ($0.55^{+0.05}_{-0.08}$), compatible with maximal mixing. In the Bayesian analysis, the data weakly prefer normal ordering (Bayes factor 3.7) and the upper octant for $\sin^2(θ_{23})$ (Bayes factor 2.4).

We present near-infrared integral field spectroscopy data obtained with VLT/SINFONI of "the Teacup galaxy". The nuclear K-band (1.95-2.45 micron) spectrum of this radio-quiet type-2 quasar reveals a blueshifted broad component of FWHM~1600-1800 km/s in the hydrogen recombination lines (Pa$α$, Br$δ$, and Br$γ$) and also in the coronal line [Si VI]$λ$1.963 micron. Thus the data confirm the presence of the nuclear ionized outflow previously detected in the optical and reveal its coronal counterpart. Both the ionized and coronal nuclear outflows are resolved, with seeing-deconvolved full widths at half maximum of 1.1$\pm$0.1 and 0.9$\pm$0.1 kpc along PA$\sim$72-74 deg. This orientation is almost coincident with the radio axis (PA=77 deg), suggesting that the radio jet could have triggered the nuclear outflow. In the case of the H$_2$ lines we do not require a broad component to reproduce the profiles, but the narrow lines are blueshifted by ~50 km/s on average from the galaxy systemic velocity. This could be an indication of the presence of a nuclear molecular outflow, although the bulk of the H$_2$ emission in the inner ~2 arcsec (~3 kpc) of the galaxy follows a rotation pattern. We find evidence for kinematically disrupted gas (FWHM>250 km/s) at up to 5.6 kpc from the AGN, which can be naturally explained by the action of the outflow. The narrow component of [Si VI] is redshifted with respect to the systemic velocity, unlike any other emission line in the K-band spectrum. This indicates that the region where the coronal lines are produced is not co-spatial with the narrow line region.

The single $π^0$ production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water in a neutrino beam with a peak neutrino energy of 0.6 GeV has been measured using the PØD, one of the subdetectors of the T2K near detector. The production rate was measured for data taking periods when the PØD contained water ($2.64\times{}10^{20}$ protons-on-target) and also periods without water ($3.49 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target). A measurement of the neutral current single $π^0$ production rate on water is made using appropriate subtraction of the production rate with water in from the rate with water out of the target region. The subtraction analysis yields 106 $\pm$ 41 (stat.) $\pm$ 69 (sys.) signal events, which is consistent with the prediction of 157 events from the nominal simulation. The measured to expected ratio is 0.68 $\pm$ 0.26 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.44 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.12 (flux). The nominal simulation uses a flux integrated cross section of $7.63\times{}10^{-39}$ cm${}^2$ per nucleon with an average neutrino interaction energy of 1.3 GeV.

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^{2}_{32}$ governing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three flavor neutrino oscillation model. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, the parameters are measured separately for neutrinos and antineutrinos. Using $7.482 \times 10^{20}$ POT in neutrino running mode and $7.471 \times 10^{20}$ POT in antineutrino mode, T2K obtained, $\sin^{2}(θ_{23})=0.51^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ and $Δm^{2}_{32} = 2.53^{+0.15}_{-0.13} \times 10^{-3}$eV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$ for neutrinos, and $\sin^{2}({\overlineθ}_{23})=0.42^{+0.25}_{-0.07}$ and ${Δ\overline{m}^2}_{32} = 2.55^{+0.33}_{-0.27} \times 10^{-3}$eV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$ for antineutrinos (assuming normal mass ordering). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed.

A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study, both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT violating terms from the Standard Model Extension have been derived taking into account their correlations in this model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more than $10^{20}$ at the GeV scale.

The measurement of the direction of WIMP-induced nuclear recoils is a compelling but technologically challenging strategy to provide an unambiguous signature of the detection of Galactic dark matter. Most directional detectors aim to reconstruct the dark-matter-induced nuclear recoil tracks, either in gas or solid targets. The main challenge with directional detection is the need for high spatial resolution over large volumes, which puts strong requirements on the readout technologies. In this paper we review the various detector readout technologies used by directional detectors. In particular, we summarize the challenges, advantages and drawbacks of each approach, and discuss future prospects for these technologies.

Spectra extracted for each object in the two systems do not show any signature of the [O II]$λλ$3726,29Å$\,$ emission-lines, placing upper flux limits of $3.9$ and $2.5 \times 10^{-18}\,$${\rm erg\,s^{-1}\,\,cm^{-2} \,}$ for BR 1202-0725 and J1000+0234, respectively. Using the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the luminosity of the [O II] doublet from Kennicutt (1998), we estimate unobscured SFR upper limits of $\sim$ $10-15\,\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1} \,$ and $\sim$ $30-40\,\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1} \,$ for the objects of the two systems, respectively. For the SMGs, these values are at least two orders of magnitude lower than those derived from SED and IR luminosities. The differences on the SFR values would correspond to internal extinction of, at least, $3.4 - 4.9$ and $2.1 - 3.6$ mag in the visual for BR 1202-0725 and J1000+0234 SMGs, respectively. The upper limit for the [O II]-derived SFR in one of the LAEs (Ly$\alpha2$) in the BR1202-0725 system is at least one order of magnitude lower than the previous SFR derived from infrared tracers, while both estimates are in good agreement for Ly$α$1. The lower limits to the internal extinction in these two Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) are $0.6$ mag and $1.3$ mag, respectively. No evidence for the previously claimed (Ohta et al. 2000) [O II] emission associated with Ly$α$1 is identified in our data, implying that residuals of the K-band sky emission lines after subtraction in medium-band imaging data could provide the adequate flux.

We analyze new high spatial resolution (~60 pc) ALMA CO(2-1) observations of the isolated luminous infrared galaxy ESO 320-G030 (d=48 Mpc) in combination with ancillary HST optical and near-IR imaging as well as VLT/SINFONI near-IR integral field spectroscopy. We detect a high-velocity (~450 km/s) spatially resolved (size~2.5 kpc; dynamical time ~3 Myr) massive (~10^7 Msun; mass rate~2-8 Msun/yr) molecular outflow originated in the central ~250 pc. We observe a clumpy structure in the outflowing cold molecular gas with clump sizes between 60 and 150 pc and masses between 10^5.5 and 10^6.4 Msun. The mass of the clumps decreases with increasing distance, while the velocity is approximately constant. Therefore, both the momentum and kinetic energy of the clumps decrease outwards. In the innermost (~100 pc) part of the outflow, we measure a hot-to-cold molecular gas ratio of 7x10^-5, which is similar to that measured in other resolved molecular outflows. We do not find evidence of an ionized phase in this outflow. The nuclear IR and radio properties are compatible with strong and highly obscured star-formation (A_k ~ 4.6 mag; SFR~15 Msun/yr). We do not find any evidence for the presence of an active galactic nucleus. We estimate that supernova explosions in the nuclear starburst (ν(SN) ~ 0.2 yr^-1) can power the observed molecular outflow. The kinetic energy and radial momentum of the cold molecular phase of the outflow correspond to about 2% and 20%, respectively, of the supernovae output. The cold molecular outflow velocity is lower than the escape velocity, so the gas will likely return to the galaxy disk. The mass loading factor is ~0.1-0.5, so the negative feedback due to this star-formation powered molecular outflow is probably limited.

We present new maps of emission-line flux distributions and kinematics in both ionized (traced by HI and [FeII] lines) and molecular (H2) gas of the inner 0.7x0.7kpc2 of the galaxy NGC4303, with a spatial resolution 40-80pc and velocity resolution 90-150 km/s obtained from near-IR integral field specroscopy using the VLT instrument SINFONI. The most promiment feature is a 200-250pc ring of circum-nuclear star-forming regions. The emission from ionized and molecular gas shows distinct flux distributions: while the strongest HI and [FeII] emission comes from regions in the west side of the ring (ages~4Myr), the H2 emission is strongest at the nucleus and in the east side of the ring (ages>10Myr). We find that regions of enhanced hot H2 emission are anti-correlated with those of enhanced [FeII] and HI emission, which can be attributed to post starburst regions that do not have ionizing photons anymore but still are hot enough (~2000K) to excite the H2 molecule. The line ratios are consistent with the presence of an AGN at the nucleus.
The youngest regions have stellar masses in the range 0.3-1.5E5 MSun and ionized and hot molecular gas masses of ~0.25-1.2E4 Msun and 2.5-5 Msun, respectively. The stellar and gas velocity fields show a rotation pattern, with the gas presenting larger velocity amplitudes than the stars, with a deviation observed for the H2 along the nuclear bar, where increased velocity dispersion is also observed, possibly associated with non circular motions along the bar. The stars in the ring show smaller velocity dispersion than the surroundings, that can be attributed to a cooler dynamics due to their recent formation from cool gas.

The T2K off-axis near detector, ND280, is used to make the first differential cross section measurements of muon neutrino charged current single positive pion production on a water target at energies ${\sim}0.8$ GeV. The differential measurements are presented as a function of muon and pion kinematics, in the restricted phase-space defined by $p_{π^+}>200$MeV/c, $p_{μ^-}>200$MeV/c, $\cos θ_{π^+}>0.3$ and $\cos θ_{μ^-}>0.3$. The total flux integrated $ν_μ$ charged current single positive pion production cross section on water in the restricted phase-space is measured to be $\langleσ\rangle_φ=4.25\pm0.48 (\mathrm{stat})\pm1.56 (\mathrm{syst})\times10^{-40} \mathrm{cm}^{2}/\mathrm{nucleon}$. The total cross section is consistent with the NEUT prediction ($5.03\times10^{-40} \mathrm{cm}^{2}/\mathrm{nucleon}$) and 2$σ$ lower than the GENIE prediction ($7.68\times10^{-40} \mathrm{cm}^{2}/\mathrm{nucleon}$). The differential cross sections are in good agreement with the NEUT generator. The GENIE simulation reproduces well the shapes of the distributions, but over-estimates the overall cross section normalization.

Measurements of the excitation spectrum reveal the frequency comb structure, indicating that each individual mode is responsible for inducing a nonlinear process. The strong signal dependency on the atomic density is characterized by a sharp growth and rapid saturation.

Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso {\it et al.}, the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. This results contradicts the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region.

We present a 2D study of star formation at kpc and sub-kpc scales of a sample of local (z<0.1) U/LIRGs, based on near-IR VLT-SINFONI observations. We obtained integrated measurements of the star formation rate (SFR) and star formation rate surface density, together with their 2D distributions, based on Br_gamma and Pa_alpha emission. We observe a tight linear correlation between the SFR derived from our extinction-corrected measurements and that derived from 24 micron data, and a reasonable agreement with SFR derived from total IR luminosity. Our near-IR measurements are on average a factor 3 larger than optical SFR, even when extinction corrections are applied. We found that LIRGs have a median-observed star formation rate surface density of 1.72 Msun/yr/kpc^2 for the extinction-corrected distribution, whilst ULIRGs have 0.23 Msun/yr/kpc^2, respectively. These median values for ULIRGs increase up to 2.90 Msun/yr/kpc^2, when only their inner regions, covering the same size as the average FoV of LIRGs, are considered. We identified a total of 95 individual SF clumps in our sample, with sizes within 60-1500pc, and extinction-corrected Pa_alpha luminosities of 10^5-10^8 Lsun. Star-forming clumps in LIRGs are about ten times larger and thousands of times more luminous than typical clumps in spiral galaxies. Clumps in ULIRGs have sizes similar (x0.5-1) to those of high-z clumps, having Pa_alpha luminosities similar to some high-z clumps, and about 10 times less luminous than the most luminous high-z clumps identified so far. We also observed a change in the slope of the L-r relation. A likely explanation is that most luminous galaxies are interacting and merging, and therefore their size represents a combination of the distribution of the star-forming clumps within each galaxy in the system plus the effect of the projected distance.

We report the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon without pions in the final state at the T2K beam energy using 5.734$\times10^{20}$ protons on target. For the first time the measurement is reported as a flux-integrated, double-differential cross-section in muon kinematic variables ($\cosθ_μ$, $p_μ$), without correcting for events where a pion is produced and then absorbed by final state interactions. Two analyses are performed with different selections, background evaluations and cross-section extraction methods to demonstrate the robustness of the results against biases due to model-dependent assumptions. The measurements compare favorably with recent models which include nucleon-nucleon correlations but, given the present precision, the measurement does not solve the degeneracy between different models. The data also agree with Monte Carlo simulations which use effective parameters that are tuned to external data to describe the nuclear effects. The total cross-section in the full phase space is $σ= (0.417 \pm 0.047 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.005 \text{(stat)})\times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$ and the cross-section integrated in the region of phase space with largest efficiency and best signal-over-background ratio ($\cosθ_μ>0.6$ and $p_μ> 200$ MeV) is $σ= (0.202 \pm 0.0359 \text{(syst)} \pm 0.0026 \text{(stat)}) \times 10^{-38} \text{cm}^2$ $\text{nucleon}^{-1}$.
