We revisit the concepts of acyclic orderings and number of acyclic orderings of acyclic digraphs in terms of dispositions and counters for arbitrary multidigraphs. We prove that when we add a sequence of nested directed paths to a directed graph there is a unique polynomial such that the generatrix function of the family of counters is the product of the polynomial and the exponential function. We give an application, by considering a kind of digraphs arranged in rows introduced by the authors in a previous paper, called dispositional digraphs, in the particular case in which the digraph has two rows, to obtain new families of linear differential equations of small order whose coefficients are polynomials of small degree which admit polynomial solutions. In particular, we obtain a new differential equation associated to Catalan numbers, and the corresponding associated polynomials, which are solution of this differential equation; we term them Catalan differencial equation and Catalan polynomials, respectively. We prove that the Catalan polynomials obtained when we connect the directed path to the second vertex of the lower row of the digraph are orthogonal polynomials for an appropriate weight function. We characterize the digraphs that maximize the counter of connected dispositional digraphs and we find a new differential equation associated to these digraphs. We introduce also dispositions and counters in any multidigraph with non-strict inequalities in the dispositions, and we find new differential equations associated to some of them.

We refine and extend a recent construction of sets of black hole microstates with semiclassical interiors that span a Hilbert space of dimension $e^S$, where $S$ is the black hole entropy. We elaborate on the definition and properties of microstates in statistical and black hole mechanics. The gravitational description of microstates employs matter shells in the interior of the black hole, and we argue that in the limit where the shells are very heavy, the construction acquires universal validity. To this end, we show it for very wide classes of black holes: we first extend the construction to rotating and charged black holes, including extremal and near-extremal solutions, with or without supersymmetry, and we sketch how the construction of microstates can be embedded in String Theory. We then describe how the approach can include general quantum corrections, near or far from extremality. For supersymmetric black holes, the microstates we construct differ from other recent constructions in that the interior excitations are not confined within the near-extremal throat.

Entwinement was first introduced as the CFT dual to extremal, non-minimal geodesics of quotiented AdS$_3$ spaces. It was heuristically meant to capture the entanglement of internal, gauged degrees of freedom, for instance in the symmetric product orbifold CFT of the D1/D5 brane system. The literature now contains different, and sometimes inequivalent, field theory definitions of entwinement. In this paper, we build a discretized lattice model of symmetric product orbifold CFTs, and explicitly construct a gauge-invariant reduced density matrix whose von Neumann entropy agrees with the holographic computation of entwinement. Refining earlier notions, our construction gives meaning to the entwinement of an interval of given size within a long string of specific length. We discuss similarities and differences with previous definitions of entwinement.

We present several new results for the $N$-partite information, $I_N$, of spatial regions in the ground state of $d$-dimensional conformal field theories. First, we show that $I_N$ can be written in terms of a single $N$-point function of twist operators. Using this, we argue that in the limit in which all mutual separations are much greater than the regions sizes, the $N$-partite information scales as $I_N \sim r^{-2NΔ}$, where $r$ is the typical distance between pairs of regions and $Δ$ is the lowest primary scaling dimension. In the case of spherical entangling surfaces, we obtain a completely explicit formula for the $I_4$ in terms of 2-, 3- and 4-point functions of the lowest-dimensional primary. Then, we consider a three-dimensional scalar field in the lattice. We verify the predicted long-distance scaling and provide strong evidence that $I_N$ is always positive for general regions and arbitrary $N$ for that theory. For the $I_4$, we find excellent numerical agreement between our general formula and the lattice result for disk regions. We also perform lattice calculations of the mutual information for more general regions and general separations both for a free scalar and a free fermion, and conjecture that, normalized by the corresponding disk entanglement entropy coefficients, the scalar result is always greater than the fermion one. Finally, we verify explicitly the equality between the $N$-partite information of bulk and boundary fields in holographic theories for spherical entangling surfaces in general dimensions.

We implement a universal method for renormalizing AdS gravity actions applicable to arbitrary higher curvature theories in up to five dimensions. The renormalization procedure considers the extrinsic counterterm for Einstein-AdS gravity given by the Kounterterms scheme, but with a theory-dependent coupling constant that is fixed by the requirement of renormalization for the vacuum solution. This method is shown to work for a generic higher curvature gravity with arbitrary couplings except for a zero measure subset, which includes well-known examples where the asymptotic behavior is modified and the AdS vacua are degenerate, such as Chern-Simons gravity in 5D, Conformal Gravity in 4D and New Massive Gravity in 3D. In order to show the universality of the scheme, we perform a decomposition of the equations of motion into their normal and tangential components with respect to the Poincare coordinate and study the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the metric. We verify the cancellation of divergences of the on-shell action and the well-posedness of the variational principle.

The holographic entanglement entropy functional for higher-curvature gravities involves a weighted sum whose evaluation, beyond quadratic order, requires a complicated theory-dependent splitting of the Riemann tensor components. Using the splittings of general relativity one can obtain unambiguous formulas perturbatively valid for general higher-curvature gravities. Within this setup, we perform a novel rewriting of the functional which gets rid of the weighted sum. The formula is particularly neat for general cubic and quartic theories, and we use it to explicitly evaluate the corresponding functionals. In the case of Lovelock theories, we find that the anomaly term can be written in terms of the exponential of a differential operator. We also show that order-$n$ densities involving $n_R$ Riemann tensors (combined with $n-n_R$ Ricci's) give rise to terms with up to $2n_R-2$ extrinsic curvatures. In particular, densities built from arbitrary Ricci curvatures combined with zero or one Riemann tensors have no anomaly term in their functionals. Finally, we apply our results for cubic gravities to the evaluation of universal terms coming from various symmetric regions in general dimensions. In particular, we show that the universal function characteristic of corner regions in $d=3$ gets modified in its functional dependence on the opening angle with respect to the Einstein gravity result.

This is the simplest case for which the so-called splitting problem manifests itself, and we explicitly show that the two common splittings present in the literature - minimal and non-minimal - produce different functionals. We apply our results to the particular examples of a boundary disk and a boundary strip in a state dual to 4-dimensional Poincaré AdS in Einsteinian Cubic Gravity, obtaining the bulk entanglement surface for both functionals and finding that causal wedge inclusion is respected for both splittings and a wide range of values of the cubic coupling.

Within General Relativity, a minimally coupled scalar field governed by a quadratic potential is able to produce an accelerated expansion of the universe provided its value and excursion are larger than the Planck scale. This is an archetypical example of the so called large field inflation models. We show that by including higher curvature corrections to the gravitational action in the form of the Geometric Inflation models, it is possible to obtain accelerated expansion with a free scalar field whose values are well below the Planck scale, thereby turning a traditional large field model into a small field one. We provide the conditions the theory has to satisfy in order for this mechanism to operate, and we present two explicit models illustrating it. Finally, we present some open questions raised by this scenario in which inflation takes place completely in a higher curvature dominated regime, such as those concerning the study of perturbations.

We revisit the recently proposed mechanism of Geometric Inflation. On general grounds, we show that obtaining the right amount of inflation demands an exceedingly large initial energy density. We introduce a scalar field and study the combined action of both mechanisms. Besides fixing the aforementioned issue, a cascading process occurs whose last step seems undistinguishable from ordinary large field inflation. Strikingly, the scalar field remains approximately constant while Geometric Inflation rules the dynamics. This ultimately leads to the possibility of reducing the initial value of the scalar field and its excursion. We discuss the main features of this hybrid scenario.

A special case of this result gives the $α'$-correction to TsT transformations. In a suitable scheme the correction comes entirely from an induced anomalous double Lorentz transformation, which is needed to make the two vielbeins obtained upon the YB deformation equal. This should hold more generally, in particular for abelian and non-abelian T-duality, as we discuss.

These are such that the entire action is invariant under corrected T-duality rules, which we derive explicitly. Generically this action does not describe low energy string backgrounds except for isolated choices for the parameters. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that in this theory the entropy and the temperature of generic black hole solutions are T-duality invariant. This further supports the idea put forward in our previous work that T-duality might provide physical equivalences beyond the realm of string theory.

We show that the temperature and entropy of a BTZ black hole are invariant under T-duality to next to leading order in $M_\star^{-2}$, $M_\star$ being the scale suppressing higher-curvature/derivative terms in the Lagrangian. We work in the framework of a two-parameter family of theories exhibiting T-duality, which includes (but goes beyond) String Theory. Interestingly enough, the AdS/CFT correspondence enforces quantization conditions on these parameters. In the particular case of bosonic/heterotic string theory, our results extend those of a classical paper by Horowitz and Welch. For generic (albeit quantized) values of the parameters, it suggests that T-duality might be an interesting tool to constrain consistent low-energy effective actions while entailing physical equivalences outside String Theory. Moreover, it generates a new family of regular asymptotically flat black string solutions in three-dimensions.
