We give an alternative proof of a fact that a finite continuous non-decreasing submodular set function on a measurable space can be expressed as a supremum of measures dominated by the function, if there exists a class of sets which is totally ordered with respect to inclusion and generates the sigma-algebra of the space. The proof is elementary in the sense that the measure attaining the supremum in the claim is constructed by a standard extension theorem of measures. As a consequence, a uniquness of the supremum attaining measure also follows. A Polish space is an examples of the measurable space which has a class of totally ordered sets that generates the Borel sigma-algebra.

We explored quinary body-centered cubic (bcc) high-entropy alloy (HEA) superconductors with valence electron concentrations (VECs) ranging from 4.6 to 5.0, a domain that has received limited attention in prior research. Our search has led to the discovery of new bcc Ti-Hf-Nb-Ta-Re superconducting alloys, which exhibit an interesting phenomenon of phase segregation into two bcc phases with slightly different chemical compositions, as the VEC increases. The enthalpy of the formation of each binary compound explains the phase segregation. All the alloys investigated were categorized as type-II superconductors, with superconducting critical temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$) ranging from 3.25 K to 4.38 K. We measured the Vickers microhardness, which positively correlated with the Debye temperature, and compared it with the hardness values of other bcc HEA superconductors. Our results indicate that $T_\mathrm{c}$ systematically decreases with an increase in hardness beyond a threshold of approximately 350 HV. Additionally, we plotted $T_\mathrm{c}$ vs. VEC for representative quinary bcc HEAs. The plot revealed the asymmetric VEC dependence. The correlation between the hardness and $T_\mathrm{c}$, as well as the asymmetric dependence of $T_\mathrm{c}$ on VEC can be attributed to the simultaneous effects of the electronic density of states at the Fermi level and electron-phonon coupling under the uncertainty principle, especially in the higher VEC region.

Compared with adjacent microwaves and infrared frequencies, terahertz (THz) frequency offers numerous advantages for imaging applications. The unique THz spectral signatures of chemicals allow the development of THz imaging systems for nondestructive tests and the evaluation of biological objects, materials, components, circuits, and systems, which are especially useful in the security, medical, material, pharmaceutical, aeronautical, and electronics industries. However, technological advancements have been hindered owing to the lack of power-efficient and compact THz sources. Here, we use high-temperature superconducting monolithic sources known as Josephson plasma emitters (JPEs)-which are compact, chip-integrated coherent and monochromatic sources of broadly tunable THz waves-and report the art of non-destructive imaging of concealed metallic surgical blades, floppy disks, dandelion leaves, and slices of pork meat in the THz spectral range. The quality of the images, exhibiting high-contrast differentiation between metallic and non-metallic parts, making different features of objects visible, and targeting different powders, demonstrates the viability of this THz imaging system for nondestructive, contactless, quick, and accurate environmental monitoring, security, medicine, materials, and quantum science and technology applications.

We conduct deep optical integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) for the low-mass EMPGs with the medium high resolution ($R=7500$) grism of the 8m-Subaru FOCAS IFU instrument by the EMPRESS 3D survey, and investigate H$α$ emission of the EMPGs. Exploiting the resolution high enough for the low-mass galaxies, we derive gas dynamics with the H$α$ lines by the fitting of 3-dimensional disk models. We obtain an average maximum rotation velocity ($v_\mathrm{rot}$) of $15\pm3~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ and an average intrinsic velocity dispersion ($σ_0$) of $27\pm10~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for 15 spatially resolved EMPGs out of the 33 EMPGs, and find that all of the 15 EMPGs have $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0<1$ suggesting dispersion dominated systems. There is a clear decreasing trend of $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ with the decreasing stellar mass and metallicity. We derive the gas mass fraction ($f_\mathrm{gas}$) for all of the 33 EMPGs, and find no clear dependence on stellar mass and metallicity. These $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ and $f_\mathrm{gas}$ trends should be compared with young high-$z$ galaxies observed by the forthcoming JWST IFS programs to understand the physical origins of the EMPGs in the local universe.

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS2 on charge density waves (CDW) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM, STS), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT). We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to the single CDW site, with single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant, leading to band bending and affecting multiple neighboring sites. While only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging, all defects are easily resolved by local density of states (LDOS) mapping with STS. We correlate atomically-resolved STM periodicity of defect-free 1T-TaS2 to top sulfur atoms and introduce tiling of the surface using equiangular hexagon. DFT calculations (with included Coulomb interactions) are used to investigate the electronic structure by introducing sulfur vacancy or substituting sulfur with oxygen. The sulfur vacancy is characterized by metallic properties and is identified as an origin of one of observed experimentally defects. Whereas in the case of the latter, the oxidation of 1T-TaS2 is found to result in the loss of magnetic properties expected in defect-free material.

After 16 years of on-sky operation, Subaru Telescope's facility adaptive optics AO188 is getting several major upgrades to become the extreme-AO AO3000 (3000 actuators in the pupil compared to 188 previously). AO3000 will provide high-Strehl images for several instruments from visible to mid-infrared, notably the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS), and the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO). For this upgrade, the original 188-element deformable mirror (DM) will be replaced with ALPAO's $64\times64$ DM. The visible wavefront sensor will also be upgraded at a later date, but in the meantime we are adding a near-infrared Wavefront Sensor (NIR WFS), using either a double roof prism pyramid mode or a focal plane WFS mode. This new wavefront sensor will use for the first time First Light's C-RED ONE camera, allowing for a full control of the $64\times64$ DM at up to 1.6 kHz. One of the challenges is the use of non-destructive reads and a rolling shutter with the modulated pyramid. This upgrade will be particularly exciting for SCExAO, since the extreme-AO loop will focus more on creating high-contrast dark zones instead of correcting large atmospheric residuals. It will be the first time two extreme-AO loops will be combined on the same telescope. Finally, the setup AO3000+SCExAO+IRCS will serve as a perfect demonstrator for the Thirty Meter Telescope's Planetary Systems Imager (TMT-PSI). We will present here the design, integration and testing of AO3000, and show the first on-sky results.

The ultrafast response and broadband absorption of all-optical graphene switches are highly desirable features for on-chip photonic switching. However, because graphene is an atomically thin material, its absorption of guided optical modes is relatively low, resulting in high saturation thresholds and switching energies for these devices. To boost the absorption of graphene, we present a practical design of an electrically-biased all-optical graphene switch that is integrated into silicon slot waveguides, which strongly confine the optical mode in the slotted region and enhance its interaction with graphene. Moreover, the design incorporates a silicon slab layer and a hafnia dielectric layer to electrically tune the saturation threshold and the switching energy of the device by applying DC voltages of <0.5 V. Using this device, a high extinction ratio (ER) of 10.3dB, a low insertion loss (IL) of <0.7dB, and an ultra-efficient switching energy of 79fJ/bit at 0.23V bias are attainable for a 40um long switch. The reported performance metrics for this device are highly promising and are expected to serve the needs of next-generation photonic computing systems.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), like MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, WS$_2$, and WSe$_2$, feature direct bandgaps, strong spin-orbit coupling, and exciton-polariton interactions at the atomic scale, which could be harnessed for efficient light emission, valleytronics, and polaritonic lasing, respectively. Nevertheless, to build next-generation photonic devices that make use of these features, it is first essential to model the all-optical control mechanisms in TMDCs. Herein, a simple model is proposed to quantify the performance of a 35$\,$\textmu m long Si$_3$N$_4$ waveguide-integrated all-optical MoSe$_2$ modulator. Using this model, a switching energy of 14.6$\,$pJ is obtained for a transverse-magnetic (TM) and transverse-electric (TE) polarised pump signals at $λ=\,$480$\,$nm. Moreover, maximal extinction ratios of 20.6$\,$dB and 20.1$\,$dB are achieved for a TM and TE polarised probe signal at $λ=\,$500$\,$nm, respectively, with an ultra-low insertion loss of $<0.3\,$dB. Moreover, the device operates with an ultrafast recovery time of 50$\,$ps, while maintaining a high extinction ratio for practical applications. These findings facilitate modeling and designing novel TMDC-based photonic devices.

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$α$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$α$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($σ_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$α$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$.

Here we present deep Subaru NIR spectroscopy for 10 EMPGs. Combining the existing optical data, He/H values of 5 out of the 10 EMPGs are reliably derived by the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Adding the existing 3 EMPGs and 51 moderately metal-poor ($0.1-0.4 Z_\odot$) galaxies with reliable He/H estimates, we obtain $Y_\mathrm{P}=0.2370^{+0.0034}_{-0.0033}$ by linear regression in the $\mathrm{(He/H)}-\mathrm{(O/H)}$ plane, where we increase the number of EMPGs from 3 to 8 anchoring He/H of the most metal-poor gas in galaxies. Although our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ measurement and previous measurements are consistent, our result is slightly ($\sim 1σ$) smaller due to our EMPGs. With our $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and the existing primordial deuterium $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurement, we constrain the effective number of neutrino species $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and the baryon-to-photon ratio $η$ showing $\gtrsim 1-2σ$ tensions with the Standard Model and Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Motivated by the tensions, we allow the degeneracy parameter of electron-neutrino $ξ_e$ to vary as well as $N_\mathrm{eff}$ and $η$. We obtain $ξ_e = 0.05^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$, $N_\mathrm{eff}=3.11^{+0.34}_{-0.31}$, and $η\times10^{10}=6.08^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ from the $Y_\mathrm{P}$ and $D_\mathrm{P}$ measurements with a prior of $η$ taken from Planck Collaboration et al. (2020). Our constraints suggest a lepton asymmetry and allow for a high value of $N_\mathrm{eff}$ within the $1σ$ level, which could mitigate the Hubble tension.

The line profile and width of [O I] are employed to infer the ejecta geometry and the expansion velocity of the inner core. These two measurements are then compared with the SN sub types, and further with the [O I]/[Ca II] ratio, which is used as an indicator of the progenitor CO core mass. Based on the best fit results of the [O I] profile, the objects are classified into different morphological groups, and we conclude that the deviation from spherical symmetry is a common feature for all types of SESNe. There is a hint (at about 1 sigma level) that the distributions of the line profile fractions are different between canonical SESNe and broad-line SNe Ic. A correlation between [O I] width and [O I]/[Ca II] ratio is discerned, indicating that the oxygen-rich material tends to expand faster for objects with a more massive CO core. Such a correlation can be utilized to constrain the relation between the progenitor mass and the kinetic energy of the explosion. Further, when [O I]/[Ca II] ratio increases, the fraction of objects with Gaussian [O I] profile increases, while those with double-peaked profile decreases. This phenomenon connects ejecta geometry and the progenitor CO core mass.

The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity, such as high-temperature-cuprate, Fe-based, and heavy-fermion superconductors, has been studied as a central issue in condensed-matter physics. Spin fluctuations, instead of phonons, are considered to be responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs, and many efforts have been made to confirm this mechanism experimentally. Although a qualitative consensus seems to have been obtained, experimental confirmation has not yet been achieved. This is owing to a lack of the quantitative comparison between theory and experiments. Here, we show a semi-quantitative comparison between the superconducting-transition temperature ($T_{\rm SC}$) and spin fluctuations derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe, in which the FM fluctuations and superconductivity are tunable by external fields. The enhancement and abrupt suppression of $T_{\rm SC}$ by applied fields, as well as the pressure variation of $T_{\rm SC}$ around the FM criticality are well understood by the change in the FM fluctuations on the basis of the single-band spin-triplet theoretical formalism. The present comparisons strongly support the theoretical formalism of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, particularly in UCoGe.

Spectral observations of the type-IIb supernova (SN) 2016gkg at 300-800 days are reported. The spectra show nebular characteristics, revealing emission from the progenitor star's metal-rich core and providing clues to the kinematics and physical conditions of the explosion. The nebular spectra are dominated by emission lines of [O I] $λ\lambda6300, 6364$ and [Ca II] $λ\lambda7292, 7324$. Other notable, albeit weaker, emission lines include Mg I] $\lambda4571$, [Fe II] $\lambda7155$, O I $\lambda7774$, Ca II triplet, and a broad, boxy feature at the location of H$α$. Unlike in other stripped-envelope SNe, the [O I] doublet is clearly resolved due to the presence of strong narrow components. The doublet shows an unprecedented emission line profile consisting of at least three components for each [O I]$\lambda6300, 6364$ line: a broad component (width $\sim2000$ km s$^{-1}$), and a pair of narrow blue and red components (width $\sim300$ km s$^{-1}$) mirrored against the rest velocity. The narrow component appears also in other lines, and is conspicuous in [O I]. This indicates the presence of multiple distinct kinematic components of material at low and high velocities. The low-velocity components are likely to be produced by a dense, slow-moving emitting region near the center, while the broad components are emitted over a larger volume. These observations suggest an asymmetric explosion, supporting the idea of two-component ejecta that influence the resulting late-time spectra and light curves. SN 2016gkg thus presents striking evidence for significant asymmetry in a standard-energy SN explosion. The presence of material at low velocity, which is not predicted in 1D simulations, emphasizes the importance of multi-dimensional explosion modeling of SNe.

More than 20 crystalline and amorphous phases have been reported for ice so far. This extraordinary polymorphism of ice arises from the geometric flexibility of hydrogen bonds and hydrogen ordering, and makes ice a unique presence with its universality in the wide fields of material and earth and planetary science. A prominent unsolved question concerning the diversity is whether a hydrogen-disordered phase of ice transforms into only one hydrogen-ordered phase, as inferred from the current phase diagram of ice, although its possible hydrogen configurations have close energies. Recent experiments on a high-pressure hydrogen-disordered phase, ice VI, revealed an unknown hydrogen-ordered form ($β$-XV) besides the known ordered phase, ice XV, which would be a counterexample of the question. However, due to lack of experimental evidence, it has not been clarified whether $β$-XV is a distinct crystalline phase. Herein we report a second hydrogen-ordered phase for ice VI, ice XIX, unambiguously demonstrated by neutron diffraction measurements. The phase boundary between ice VI and ice XIX shows that ice VI contracts upon the hydrogen ordering, which thermodynamically stabilizes ice XIX in higher-pressure region than ice XV because of its smaller volume than ice XV. The pressure-driven phase competition between hydrogen-ordered phases, also theoretically suggested in other ice polymorphs, can induce hydrogen ordering of ice in different manners. Thus, this study demonstrates a hitherto undiscovered polymorphism of ice.

The layered perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+x demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magnetovolume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo2O5.5+x is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic metallic small-volume (FMSV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multiferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new pathway to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

Results demonstrated that such waveguide supports two waveguide modes such as fundamental and high-order TM-modes. The high-order TM-mode shows high field confinement, and it is sensitive to the geometry changes. By tuning the metal rod interspace, the spectral positions, bandwidths, and transmittances of the high-frequency band can be optimized. The investigation shows that a mode conversion between high-order modes occurs when the MRAs symmetry is broken via change the air interspace.

Free-standing structures that do not require any holder or substrate show high levels of flexibility and stretchability and hence are well-suited for THz applications. In this work, a free-standing THz metal structure consisting of metallic wire woven meshes is proposed and demonstrated. Experimental and numerical results exhibit that this metallic mesh achieves a sharp Fano-like resonance dip, which has not been found in previous studies. Investigation results indicate that the high Q Fano-like resonance dip comes from the single-layer metal bent wire because of its bending effect. The resonance field longitudinally covers the input and output end faces due to the large field volume of the woven meshes and benefits from near-field sensing applications.

The experiment revealed that spin fluctuations in ferromagnetic (FM) state of URhGe are robust against magnetic field below about 4 T, applied along any direction in the bc crystal plane. This is in clear contrast with the sister compound UCoGe, in which FM spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed by a tiny applied field along the c axis. We show that such a difference in the character of the spin fluctuations is reflected in their two distinct phase diagrams for the upper critical field Hc2, providing further support to the mechanism of superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in these materials.

Water freezes below 0 °C at ambient pressure, ordinarily to ice Ih with an ABAB... hexagonal stacking sequence. However, it is also known to produce "ice Ic" nominally with an ABCABC... cubic stacking sequence under certain conditions1, and its existence in Earth's atmosphere, or in comets is debated. "Ice Ic", or called as cubic ice, was first identified in 1943 by König, who used electron microscopy to study the condensation of ice from water vapor to a cold substrate. Subsequently, many different routes to "ice Ic" have been established, such as the dissociation of gas hydrates, warming amorphous ices or annealing high-pressure ices recovered at ambient pressure, freezing of $μ$- or nano-confined water. Despite the numerous studies on "ice Ic", its structure has not been fully verified, because the diffraction patterns of "ice Ic" show signatures of stacking-disorder, and ideal ice Ic without stacking-disorder had not been formed until very recently. Here we demonstrate a route to obtain ice Ic without stacking-disorder by degassing hydrogen from the high-pressure form of hydrogen hydrate, C$_2$, which has a host framework that is isostructural with ice Ic. Surprisingly, the stacking-disorder free ice Ic is formed from C$_2$ via an intermediate amorphous or nano-crystalline form under decompression, unlike the direct transformations that occur in the cases of recently discovered ice XVI from neon hydrate, or ice XVII from hydrogen hydrate. The obtained ice Ic shows remarkable thermal stability until the phase transition to ice Ih at 250 K; this thermal stability originates from the lack of dislocations, which promote changes in the stacking sequence. This discovery of ideal ice Ic will promote understanding of the role of stacking-disorder on the physical properties of ice as a counter end-member of ice Ih.

The data confirm a moderate Ising anisotropy for both the static (K) and dynamical susceptibilities (1/T1) in the paramagnetic state above about 20 K. Around 20 K, however, we have observed a sudden loss of NMR spin-echo signal due to sudden enhancement of the NMR spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T2, when the field is applied along the easy axis of magnetization (=a axis). This behavior suggests the development of longitudinal magnetic fluctuations along the a axis at very low frequencies below 20 K.

We performed deep spectropolarimetric observations of a prototypical starburst galaxy M82 with the Subaru Telescope in order to study the kinematics of the dust outflow. We obtained optical polarized emission-line spectra up to $\sim$4~kpc away from the nucleus of the galaxy along three position angles within the conical outflowing wind (superwind). The H$α$ emission line in the superwind is strongly polarized and the polarization pattern shows dust scattering of central light sources, being consistent with the previous works. The intensity weighted polarization degree of the H$α$ line reaches $\sim$30\%\ at maximum. There are at least two light sources at the central region of the galaxy; one of which is located at the near-infrared nucleus and the other resides at one of the peaks of the 3 mm radio and molecular gas emission. The outer (> 1 kpc) dust is illuminated by the former, whereas the inner dust is scattering the light from the latter. We investigated as well the dust motion from the velocity field of the polarized H$α$ emission line. The dust is accelerated outward on the northwest side of the nucleus. A simple bi-conical dust outflow model shows that the outflow velocity of the dust reaches $\gtrsim 300-450$ km/s at $\sim 4$ kpc from the nucleus, suggesting that some portion of the dust escapes from the gravitational potential of M82 into the intergalactic space. At some regions on the southeast side, in particular along the position angle of 138$^\circ$, the dust has radial velocity slower than the systemic velocity of the galaxy, apparently suggesting inflowing motion toward the nucleus. These components are spatially consistent with a part of the molecular gas stream, which is kinematically independent of the outflow gas, thus the apparent inflow motion of the dust reflects the streaming motion associated with the molecular gas stream.

To carry out prompt spectroscopy, we developed an optical-fiber integral field unit (IFU) and connected it with an existing optical spectrograph KOOLS. KOOLS with IFU, hereafter KOOLS--IFU, was mounted on the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory 188-cm telescope. The fiber core and cladding diameters of the fiber bundle are 100 $μ$m and 125 $μ$m, respectively, and 127 fibers are hexagonally close-packed in the sleeve of the two-dimensional (2D) fiber array. We conducted test observations to measure the KOOLS--IFU performance and obtained the following conclusions: (1) the spatial sampling is 2''.34 $\pm$ 0''.05 per fiber, and the total field of view (FoV) is 30''.4 $\pm$ 0''.65 with 127 fibers; (2) the observable wavelength and the spectral resolving power of the grisms of KOOLS are 4030--7310 A and 400--600; 5020--8830 A and 600--900; 4160--6000 A and 1000--1200; and 6150--7930 A and 1800--2400, respectively; and (3) the estimated limiting magnitude is 18.2--18.7 AB mag during 30-min exposure under the optimal condition.

CeRhIn$_{5}$ is a Kondo-lattice prototype in which a magnetic field B$\bf{^{\ast}\simeq}$ 30 T induces an abrupt Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction and pronounced in-plane electrical transport anisotropy all within its antiferromagnetic state. Though the antiferromagnetic order at zero field is well-understood, the origin of an emergent state at B$^{\ast}$ remains unknown due to challenges inherent to probing states microscopically at high fields. Here, we report low-temperature Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements revealing a discontinuous decrease in the $^{115}$In formal Knight shift, without changes in crystal or magnetic structures, of CeRhIn$_{5}$ at fields spanning B$^{\ast}$. We show that the emergent state above B$^{\ast}$ results from a change in Ce's 4f orbitals that arises from field-induced evolution of crystal-electric field (CEF) energy levels. This change in orbital character enhances hybridisation between the 4f and the conduction electrons (c.e.) that leads ultimately to an itinerant quantum-critical point at B$\bf{_{c0} \simeq}$ 50 T.

A popular social network in the political arena is Twitter, a microblogging service for posting messages of up to 280 characters, called "tweets," where influential politicians from various countries often use this medium to spread ideas and make public statements. In this work, an analysis was made of the connections of candidates for the presidency of the Republic of Brazil in the year 2018. Using the analysis of complex networks to measure influence and relevance, a metric was established able to quantify the importance of users in the network. We present optical and near-infrared observations of the nearby Type Iax supernova (SN) 2014dt from 14 to 410 days after the maximum light. The velocities of the iron absorption lines in the early phase indicated that SN 2014dt showed slower expansion than the well-observed Type Iax SNe 2002cx, 2005hk and 2012Z. In the late phase, the evolution of the light curve and that of the spectra were considerably slower. The spectral energy distribution kept roughly the same shape after ~100 days, and the bolometric light curve flattened during the same period. These observations suggest the existence of an optically thick component that almost fully trapped the γ-ray energy from 56 Co decay. These findings are consistent with the predictions of the weak deflagration model, leaving a bound white dwarf remnant after the explosion.

We report the initial result of an adaptive-optics assisted, optical integral-field-unit observation on IRAS04576+0912, the nearest (z=0.039) active galactic nucleus with a prominent blueshift/tail in [O III] emission from a sample of such objects that we have collected from the literature. We aim at addressing the putative quasar-mode feedback process with Subaru/Kyoto 3D II+AO188. The optical waveband (6400--7500 AA) enables us to measure the gas density via the [S II] doublets, in contrast to earlier Near-IR studies. Since the fast [O III] outflow happens only around rapidly growing central black holes, this object is suitable for investigating the black hole-galaxy coevolution. The obtained data cube exhibits blue tail in the [S II] emission at many lenslets. By fitting the spectrum with the high excess flux at the [S II] blue tail, we find the fast (~ 860 km/s), dense (>3000/cc), wide-angle and offset outflow in central 100-pc scales. Although the large opening angle and the high gas outflow-to-accretion ratio may favour the feedback hypothesis, the inferred kinetic power injection rate of this ionized gas outflow seems insufficient to influence the whole host galaxy. A conventional assumption of a low density must have overestimated the feedback process.

Polarization during a lunar eclipse is a forgotten mystery. Coyne & Pellicori (1970) reported the detection of significant polarization during the lunar eclipse on 1968 April 13. Multiple scattering during the first transmission through the Earth's atmosphere was suggested as a possible cause of the polarization, but no conclusive determination was made. No further investigations on polarization during a lunar eclipse are known. We revisit this mystery with an interest in possible application to extrasolar planets, if planetary transmitted light is indeed polarized, it may be possible to investigate an exoplanet atmosphere using "transit polarimetry." Here we report results of the first spectropolarimetry for the Moon during a lunar eclipse on 2015 April 4. We observed polarization degrees of 2-3% at wavelengths of 500-600 nm, in addition, an enhanced feature was detected at the O$_2$ A band near 760 nm. The observed time variation and wavelength dependence are consistent with an explanation of polarization caused by double scattering during the first transmission through the Earth's atmosphere, accompanied by latitudinal atmospheric inhomogeneity. Transit polarimetry for exoplanets may be useful to detect O$_2$ gas and to probe the latitudinal atmospheric inhomogeneity, and it is thus worthy of serious consideration.

We detected a compact H$α$-emitting (i.e., star-forming) region in the galaxy, which has a much smaller angular size [$< 0".57$ (1.9 kpc) at full width at half maximum (FWHM)] than the extended stellar continuum emission region determined by the Gemini/GMOS z'-band image [$\simeq 1".4$ (4.6 kpc) at FWHM with ellipticity b/a=0.45]. The spatial offset between the centroid of the H$α$ emission region and the position of the radio bursts is $0".08 \pm 0".02$ ($0.26 \pm 0.07$ kpc), indicating that FRB 121102 is located within the star-forming region. This close spatial association of FRB 121102 with the star-forming region is consistent with expectations from young pulsar/magnetar models for FRB 121102, and it also suggests that the observed H$α$ emission region can make a major dispersion measure (DM) contribution to the host galaxy DM component of FRB 121102. Nevertheless, the largest possible value of the DM contribution from the H$α$ emission region inferred from our observations still requires a significant amount of ionized baryons in intergalactic medium (the so-called `missing' baryons) as the DM source of FRB 121102, and we obtain a 90\% confidence level lower limit on the cosmic baryon density in the intergalactic medium in the low-redshift universe as $Ω_{IGM} > 0.012$.

A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg$^2$ in five broad bands ($grizy$), with a $5\,σ$ point-source depth of $r \approx 26$. The Deep layer covers a total of 26~deg$^2$ in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg$^2$). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey.

The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i~26.4, ~26.5, and ~27.0 mag, respectively (5sigma for point sources). All the layers are observed in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1-2 per cent PSF photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ~10 mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. Detailed descriptions of all the data can be found online. The data release website is https://hsc-release.mtk.nao.ac.jp/.

We consider the stochastic ranking process with space-time dependent unbounded jump rates for the particles. We prove that the joint empirical distribution of jump rate and scaled position converges almost surely to a deterministic distribution in the infinite particle limit. We assume topology of weak convergence for the space of distributions, which implies that the fluctuations among particles with different jump rates cancel in the limit. The results are proved by first finding an auxiliary stochastic ranking process, for which a strong law of large numbers is applied, and then applying a multi time recursive Gronwall's inequality. The limit has a representation in terms of non-Markovian processes which we call point processes with last-arrival-time dependent intensities.

We prove a law of large numbers in terms of complete convergence of independent random variables taking values in increments of monotone functions, with convergence uniform both in the initial and the final time. The result holds also for the random variables taking values in functions of $2$ parameters which share similar monotonicity properties as the increments of monotone functions. The assumptions for the main result are the Hölder continuity on the expectations as well as moment conditions, while the sample functions may contain jumps. In particular, we can apply the results to point processes (counting processes) which lack Markov or martingale type properties.

We compare the metallicity distribution of the low-redshift sample to the model predictions, and constrain the relation between metallicity and GRB occurrence. We take account of spatial variation of metallicities among star forming regions within a galaxy. We found that the models, in which only low-metallicity stars produce GRBs with a sharp cutoff of GRB production efficiency around 12+log(O/H) $\sim$ 8.3, can well reproduce the observed distribution, while the models with no metallicity dependence are not consistent with the observations. We also discuss possible sampling biases we may suffer by collecting long GRBs whose redshifts are known, presenting the photometric observations of the host galaxy of GRB 111225A at $z = 0.297$ whose redshift has been undetermined until $\sim$ 2.3 years after the burst.

In recent years, millisecond duration radio signals originating from distant galaxies appear to have been discovered in the so-called Fast Radio Bursts. These signals are dispersed according to a precise physical law and this dispersion is a key observable quantity which, in tandem with a redshift measurement, can be used for fundamental physical investigations. While every fast radio burst has a dispersion measurement, none before now have had a redshift measurement, due to the difficulty in pinpointing their celestial coordinates. Here we present the discovery of a fast radio burst and the identification of a fading radio transient lasting $\sim 6$ days after the event, which we use to identify the host galaxy; we measure the galaxy's redshift to be $z=0.492\pm0.008$. The dispersion measure and redshift, in combination, provide a direct measurement of the cosmic density of ionised baryons in the intergalactic medium of $Ω_{\mathrm{IGM}}=4.9 \pm 1.3\%$, in agreement with the expectation from WMAP, and including all of the so-called "missing baryons". The $\sim6$-day transient is largely consistent with a short gamma-ray burst radio afterglow, and its existence and timescale do not support progenitor models such as giant pulses from pulsars, and supernovae. This contrasts with the interpretation of another recently discovered fast radio burst, suggesting there are at least two classes of bursts.

The configuration is found to have high reflection efficiency (minimum 56%) and has a full phase modulation in a wide frequency range. Terahertz (THz) beam steering as large as 120 degrees ($\pm60^\circ$) is demonstrated in a broad frequency range (1.2 to 1.9 THz) by changing the Fermi levels of different graphene resonators accordingly. This metasurface can provide a new platform for effectively manipulating THz waves.

We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the central kpc region of the luminous type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with unprecedented high resolution (0.5$"$ $\times$ 0.4$"$ = 165 pc $\times$ 132 pc) at submillimeter wavelengths. Utilizing the wide-bandwidth of ALMA, we simultaneously obtained HCN(4-3), HCO$^+$(4-3), CS(7-6), and partially CO(3-2) line maps, as well as the 860 $μ$m continuum. The region consists of the central $\sim$ 1$"$ component and the surrounding starburst ring with a radius of $\sim$ 1.5$"$-2.5$"$. Several structures connect these components. Except for CO(3-2), these dense gas tracers are significantly concentrated towards the central $\sim$ 1$"$, suggesting their suitability to probe the nuclear regions of galaxies. Their spatial distribution resembles well those of centimeter and mid-infrared continuum emissions, but it is anti-correlated with the optical one, indicating the existence of dust obscured star formation. The integrated intensity ratios of HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) and HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6) are higher at the AGN position than at the starburst ring, which is consistent to our previous findings (submm-HCN enhancement). However, the HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) ratio at the AGN position of NGC 7469 (1.11$\pm$0.06) is almost half of the corresponding value of the low-luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 (2.0$\pm$0.2), despite the more than two orders of magnitude higher X-ray luminosity of NGC 7469. But the ratio is comparable to that of the close vicinity of the AGN of NGC 1068 ($\sim$ 1.5). Based on these results, we speculate that some other heating mechanisms than X-ray (e.g., mechanical heating due to AGN jet) can contribute significantly for shaping the chemical composition in NGC 1097.

The unprecedentedly bright afterglow of Swift GRB 130606A at z = 5.91 gave us a unique opportunity to probe the reionization era by high precision analyses of the redward damping wing of Ly alpha absorption, but the reported constraints on the neutral hydrogen fraction (f_HI) in intergalactic medium (IGM) derived from spectra taken by different telescopes are in contradiction. Here we examine the origin of this discrepancy by analyzing the spectrum taken by VLT with our own analysis code previously used to fit the Subaru spectrum. Though the VLT team reported no evidence for IGM HI using the VLT spectrum, we confirmed our previous result of preferring non-zero IGM HI (the best-fit f_HI ~ 0.06, when IGM HI extends to the GRB redshift). The fit residuals of the VLT spectrum by the model without IGM HI show the same systematic trend as the Subaru spectrum. We consider that the likely origin of the discrepancy between the two teams is the difference of the wavelength ranges adopted in the fittings; our wavelength range is wider than that of the VLT team, and also we avoided the shortest wavelength range of deep Ly alpha absorption (lambda_obs < 8426 A), because this region is dominated by HI in the host galaxy and the systematic uncertainty about host HI velocity distribution is large. We also study the sensitivity of these results to the adopted Ly alpha cross section formulae, ranging from the classical Lorentzian function to the most recent one taking into account fully quantum mechanical scattering. It is found that the preference for non-zero IGM HI is robust against the choice of the cross section formulae, but it is quantitatively not negligible and hence one should be careful in future analyses.

We report observations of the Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2012Z at optical and near-infrared wavelengths from immediately after the explosion until $\sim$ $260$ days after the maximum luminosity using the Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) program and the Subaru telescope. We found that the near-infrared (NIR) light curve evolutions and color evolutions are similar to those of SNe Iax 2005hk and 2008ha. The NIR absolute magnitudes ($M_{J}\sim-18.1$ mag and $M_{H}\sim-18.3$ mag) and the rate of decline of the light curve ($Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$=1.6 \pm 0.1$ mag) are very similar to those of SN 2005hk ($M_{J}\sim-17.7$ mag, $M_{H}\sim$$-18.0$ mag, and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim1.6$ mag), yet differ significantly from SNe 2008ha and 2010ae ($M_{J}\sim-14 - -15$ mag and $Δ$ $m_{15}$($B$)$\sim2.4-2.7$ mag). The estimated rise time is $12.0 \pm 3.0$ days, which is significantly shorter than that of SN 2005hk or any other Ia SNe. The rapid rise indicates that the $^{56}$Ni distribution may extend into the outer layer or that the effective opacity may be lower than that in normal SNe Ia. The late-phase spectrum exhibits broader emission lines than those of SN 2005hk by a factor of 6--8. Such high velocities of the emission lines indicate that the density profile of the inner ejecta extends more than that of SN 2005hk. We argue that the most favored explosion scenario is a `failed deflagration' model, although the pulsational delayed detonations is not excluded.

We report the late-time evolution of Type IIb Supernova (SN IIb) 2013df. SN 2013df showed a dramatic change in its spectral features at ~1 year after the explosion. Early on it showed typical characteristics shared by SNe IIb/Ib/Ic dominated by metal emission lines, while later on it was dominated by broad and flat-topped Halpha and He I emissions. The late-time spectra are strikingly similar to SN IIb 1993J, which is the only previous example clearly showing the same transition. This late-time evolution is fully explained by a change in the energy input from the $^{56}$Co decay to the interaction between the SN ejecta and dense circumstellar matter (CSM). The mass loss rate is derived to be ~(5.4 +- 3.2) x 10^{-5} Msun/yr (for the wind velocity of ~20 km/s), similar to SN 1993J but larger than SN IIb 2011dh by an order of magnitude. The striking similarity between SNe 2013df and 1993J in the (candidate) progenitors and the CSM environments, and the contrast in these natures to SN 2011dh, infer that there is a link between the natures of the progenitor and the mass loss: SNe IIb with a more extended progenitor have experienced a much stronger mass loss in the final centuries toward the explosion. It might indicate that SNe IIb from a more extended progenitor are the explosions during a strong binary interaction phase, while those from a less extended progenitor have a delay between the strong binary interaction and the explosion.

The Fe concentration dependence of $^{59}$Co-NQR spectra at low temperatures indicates that the first-order FM transition occurs at least above $x$ = 1%. The magnetic fluctuations along the $c$ axis detected by the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate $1/T_2$ exhibit an anomaly at $T_\mathrm{max}$ $\sim$ 20 K and enhance with increasing $x$. These results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and indicate the presence of prominent critical fluctuations at the TCP in this system.

We present ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared observations of SN 2012ap, a broad-lined Type Ic supernova in the galaxy NGC 1729 that produced a relativistic and rapidly decelerating outflow without a gamma-ray burst signature. Photometry and spectroscopy follow the flux evolution from -13 to +272 days past the B-band maximum of -17.4 +/- 0.5 mag. The spectra are dominated by Fe II, O I, and Ca II absorption lines at ejecta velocities of 20,000 km/s that change slowly over time. Other spectral absorption lines are consistent with contributions from photospheric He I, and hydrogen may also be present at higher velocities (> 27,000 km/s). We use these observations to estimate explosion properties and derive a total ejecta mass of 2.7 Msolar, a kinetic energy of 1.0x10^{52} erg, and a 56Ni mass of 0.1-0.2 Msolar. Nebular spectra (t > 200d) exhibit an asymmetric double-peaked [OI] 6300,6364 emission profile that we associate with absorption in the supernova interior, although toroidal ejecta geometry is an alternative explanation. SN 2012ap joins SN 2009bb as another exceptional supernova that shows evidence for a central engine (e.g., black-hole accretion or magnetar) capable of launching a non-negligible portion of ejecta to relativistic velocities without a coincident gamma-ray burst detection. Defining attributes of their progenitor systems may be related to notable properties including above-average environmental metallicities of Z > Zsolar, moderate to high levels of host-galaxy extinction (E(B-V) > 0.4 mag), detection of high-velocity helium at early epochs, and a high relative flux ratio of [Ca II]/[O I] > 1 at nebular epochs. These events support the notion that jet activity at various energy scales may be present in a wide range of supernovae.

Abstract:
We present a new type of quantum critical material YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$, having the largest quantum-critical pseudospin size ever. The YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$-type structure is new, forms in the orthorhombic $Cmcm$ system, and is related to the well-known ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure. Heavy rare earth (Tm,Yb,Lu, or Y) members are also possible to be grown. YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ possesses the Ising-type ground-state doublet…

YbCo$_2$Ge$_4$ possesses the Ising-type ground-state doublet, namely the simplest ones of uniaxially up or down, $|\pm \sim 7/2\rangle$. It is clearly manifested through comprehensive resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and NQR/NMR experiments. Large pseudospin state usually tends to order in simple magnetisms, or hard to be screened by Kondo effect. Therefore, the discovery of the quantum criticality of the fluctuating large spins opens a new door to new-material search and theoretical studies.

Abstract:
The nature of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at $T_s\approx90$ K in single crystalline FeSe is studied using shear-modulus, heat-capacity, magnetization and NMR measurements. The transition is shown to be accompanied by a large shear-modulus softening, which is practically identical to that of underdoped Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$, suggesting very similar strength of the electron-la…

The nature of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural transition at $T_s\approx90$ K in single crystalline FeSe is studied using shear-modulus, heat-capacity, magnetization and NMR measurements. The transition is shown to be accompanied by a large shear-modulus softening, which is practically identical to that of underdoped Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$, suggesting very similar strength of the electron-lattice coupling. On the other hand, a spin-fluctuation contribution to the spin-lattice relaxation rate is only observed below $T_s$. This indicates that the structural, or "nematic", phase transition in FeSe is not driven by magnetic fluctuations.

We have performed nuclear quadrupole resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on UCoAl with strong Ising-type anisotropy under $b$- and $c$-axes uniaxial pressure. In the $b$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel b}$) measurement, we observed an increase in the metamagnetic transition field with increasing $P_{\parallel b}$. In the $b$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel b}$) measurement, we observed an increase in the metamagnetic transition field with increasing $P_{\parallel b}$. In the $c$-axis uniaxial pressure ($P_{\parallel c}$) measurement, on the other hand, we observed a ferromagnetic transition in zero magnetic field along the $c$-axis above $P_{\parallel c}$ = 0.08 GPa. The anomaly of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by the temperature $\left[ (T_1 T)^{-1} \right]$ at $T$ = 20 K is suppressed by $P_{\parallel b}$ and slightly enhanced by $P_{\parallel c}$. The anisotropic uniaxial pressure response indicates that uniaxial pressure is a good parameter for tuning the Ising magnetism in UCoAl.

We have performed 59Co NMR experiments on the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe under magnetic fields (H) along the a- and b- axes to investigate the relationship between ferromagnetic properties and superconductivity. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature TCurie is suppressed and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 at 2 K is enhanced in H || b, although TCurie and 1/T1 are unchanged in H || a, indicating that the ferromagnetic criticality is induced only when H is applied along the b axis. We show the close relationship between the magnetic anisotropies and the superconducting ones reported by Aoki et al.: the superconductivity is gradually suppressed in H || a, but enhanced in H || b above 5 T. We strongly suggest that the enhancement of the superconductivity observed in H || b originates from the field induced ferromagnetic criticality, as pointed out by Aoki et al and Mineev.

Starting with the Nambu-Goto action of the braneworld embedded in a curved bulk, we derive the precise expressions for the quantum induced effects due to small fluctuations of the brane. To define the brane fluctuations invariantly, we introduce the Riemannian coordinate system for the subspace normal to the braneworld. It will turn out that we can systematically incorporate the effects of bulk curvature, and that the induced effects depend on the extrinsic curvature and the normal-connection gauge field as well as on bulk curvature components at the brane.
