The spin-down law of pulsars is generally perturbed by two types of timing irregularities: glitches and timing noise. Glitches are sudden changes in the rotational frequency of pulsars, while timing noise is a discernible stochastic wandering in the phase, period, or spin-down rate of a pulsar. We present the timing results of a sample of glitching pulsars observed using the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). Our findings include timing noise analysis for 17 pulsars, with seven being reported for the first time. We detected five glitches in four pulsars and a glitch-like event in J1825-0935. The frequency evolution of glitch in pulsars, J0742-2822 and J1740-3015, is presented for the first time. Additionally, we report timing noise results for three glitching pulsars. The timing noise was analyzed separately in the pre-glitch region and post-glitch regions. We observed an increase in the red noise parameters in the post-glitch regions, where exponential recovery was considered in the noise analysis. Timing noise can introduce ambiguities in the correct evaluation of glitch observations. Hence, it is important to consider timing noise in glitch analysis. We propose an innovative glitch verification approach designed to discern between a glitch and strong timing noise. The novel glitch analysis technique is also demonstrated using the observed data.

Pneumatic systems are common in manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, robotics, and many other fields. Failures in these systems can have very serious consequences, particularly if they go undetected. In this work, we present an air-powered error detector device that can detect and respond to failures in pneumatically actuated systems. The device contains 21 monolithic membrane valves that act like transistors in a pneumatic logic "circuit" that uses vacuum to represent TRUE and atmospheric pressure as FALSE. Three pneumatic exclusive-OR (XOR) gates are used to calculate the parity bit corresponding to the values of several control bits. If the calculated value of the parity bit differs from the expected value, then an error (like a leak or a blocked air line) has been detected and the device outputs a pneumatic error signal which can in turn be used to alert a user, shut down the system, or take some other action. As a proof-of-concept, we used our pneumatic error detector to monitor the operation of a medical device, an intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) device commonly used to prevent the formation of life-threatening blood clots in the wearer's legs. Experiments confirm that when the IPC device was damaged, the pneumatic error detector immediately recognized the error (a leak) and alerted the wearer using sound. By providing a simple and low-cost way to add fault detection to pneumatic actuation systems without using sensors, our pneumatic error detector can promote safety and reliability across the wide range of pneumatic systems.

This paper proposes a disturbance observer-based control (DOBC) method for frequency and voltage regulation of a solar photovoltaic (PV)-diesel generator(DG) based hybrid microgrid during islanding conditions. The DOBC is integrated as a feed-forward control to the synchronous generator based DG, which handles real-time power mismatches and regulates the microgrid frequency and voltage under islanding. To substantiate the operational robustness of the developed controller under real-time uncertainties arising due to variability in PV output and load, the controller has been tested under worstcase uncertainty conditions. The proposed controller has been developed as a MATLAB/Simulink model and the results are validated on the real-time simulator OPAL-RT. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has further been validated in the presence of communication delays and noisy load conditions. Results verify the dynamic performance of the controller in regulating the system frequency and voltage for low-inertia microgrids. Finally, the proposed control strategy has been implemented on laboratory scale microgrid setup in which synchronous generator based diesel generator regulates system frequency fast and efficiently under worst case uncertainty scenario.

In recent times, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has emerged as an important tool for distribution-level energy management systems owing to its potential for energy conservation and management. However, load monitoring in smart building environments is challenging due to high variability of real-time load and varied load composition. Furthermore, as the volume and dimensionality of smart meters data increases, accuracy and computational time are key concerning factors. In view of these challenges, this paper proposes an improved NILM technique using multi-head (Mh-Net) convolutional neural network (CNN) under dynamic grid voltage conditions. An attention layer is introduced into the proposed CNN model, which helps in improving estimation accuracy of appliance power consumption. The performance of the developed model has been verified on an experimental laboratory setup for multiple appliance sets with varied power consumption levels, under dynamic grid voltages. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed model has been verified on widely used UK-DALE data, and its performance has been compared with existing NILM techniques. Results depict that the proposed model accurately identifies appliances, power consumptions and their time-of-use even during practical dynamic grid voltage conditions.

We present a deep learning model to predict the r-band bulge-to-total light ratio (B/T) of nearby galaxies using their multi-band JPEG images alone. Our Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based regression model is trained on a large sample of galaxies with reliable decomposition into the bulge and disk components. The existing approaches to estimate the B/T use galaxy light-profile modelling to find the best fit. This method is computationally expensive, prohibitively so for large samples of galaxies, and requires a significant amount of human intervention. Machine learning models have the potential to overcome these shortcomings. In our CNN model, for a test set of 20000 galaxies, 85.7 per cent of the predicted B/T values have absolute error (AE) less than 0.1. We see further improvement to 87.5 per cent if, while testing, we only consider brighter galaxies (with r-band apparent magnitude < 17) with no bright neighbours. Our model estimates B/T for the 20000 test galaxies in less than a minute. This is a significant improvement in inference time from the conventional fitting pipelines, which manage around 2-3 estimates per minute. Thus, the proposed machine learning approach could potentially save a tremendous amount of time, effort and computational resources while predicting B/T reliably, particularly in the era of next-generation sky surveys such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Euclid sky survey which will produce extremely large samples of galaxies.

Uptake and trust in any new data product relies on independent validation across benchmark datasets and tools to establish and confirm expected quality of results. This work focuses on the medication extraction task, and particularly, ACM was evaluated using the official test sets from the 2009 i2b2 Medication Extraction Challenge and 2018 n2c2 Track 2: Adverse Drug Events and Medication Extraction in EHRs. Overall, ACM achieved F-scores of 0.768 and 0.828. These scores ranked the lowest when compared to the three best systems in the respective challenges. To further establish the generalizability of its medication extraction performance, a set of random internal clinical text notes from NYU Langone Medical Center were also included in this work. And in this corpus, ACM garnered an F-score of 0.753.

Despite the extensive usage of oxide glasses for a few millennia, the composition-property relationships in these materials still remain poorly understood. While empirical and physics-based models have been used to predict properties, these remain limited to a few select compositions or a series of glasses. Designing new glasses requires a priori knowledge of how the composition of a glass dictates its properties such as stiffness, density, or processability. Thus, accelerated design of glasses for targeted applications remain impeded due to the lack of universal composition-property models. Herein, using deep learning, we present a methodology for the rational design of oxide glasses. Exploiting a large dataset of glasses comprising of up to 37 oxide components and more than 100,000 glass compositions, we develop high-fidelity deep neural networks for the prediction of eight properties that enable the design of glasses, namely, density, Young's modulus, shear modulus, hardness, glass transition temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, liquidus temperature, and refractive index. These models are by far the most extensive models developed as they cover the entire range of human-made glass compositions. We demonstrate that the models developed here exhibit excellent predictability, ensuring close agreement with experimental observations. Using these models, we develop a series of new design charts, termed as glass selection charts. These charts enable the rational design of functional glasses for targeted applications by identifying unique compositions that satisfy two or more constraints, on both compositions and properties, simultaneously. The generic design approach presented herein could catalyze machine-learning assisted materials design and discovery for a large class of materials including metals, ceramics, and proteins.

A ring R is said to be VNL if for any a in R, either a or 1-a is (von Neumann) regular. The class of VNL rings lies properly between the exchange rings and (von Neumann) regular rings. We characterize abelian VNL rings. We also characterize and classify arbitrary VNL rings without infinite set of orthogonal idempotents; and also the VNL rings having primitive idempotent e such that eRe is not a division ring. We prove that a semiperfect ring R is VNL if and only if for any right uni-modular row (a, b) in R^2, one of the a or b is regular in R. Formal triangular matrix rings that are VNL, are also characterized. As a corollary it is shown that an upper triangular matrix ring T_n(R) is VNL if and only if n=2 or 3 and R is a division ring.
