We construct meronic black holes and solitons in the Einstein $SU(N)$-Yang-Mills theory in $D=4$ and $D=5$ dimensions. These analytical solutions are found by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the Euler parameterization of the $SU(N)$ group from which the Yang-Mills equations are automatically satisfied for all values of $N$ while the Einstein equations can be solved analytically. We explicitly show the role that the color number $N$ plays in the black hole thermodynamics as well as in the gravitational spin from isospin effect. Two remarkable results of our analysis are that, firstly, meronic black holes can be distinguished by colored black holes by looking at the spin from isospin effect (which is absent in the latter but present in the former). Secondly, using the theory of non-embedded ansatz for $SU(N)$ together with the spin from isospin effect, one can build fields of arbitrary high spin out of scalar fields charged under the gauge group. Hence, one can analyze interacting higher spin fields in asymptotically flat space-times without "introducing by hand" higher spin fields. Our analysis also discloses an interesting difference between the spin from isospin effect in $D=4$ and in $D=5$.

This requirement is implemented by defining the fields on a two-sheeted hyperbolic surface, which we term "the hourglass". It is a spacelike deformation of the complete lightcone. On it one approaches asymptotically (null) past and future infinity while remaining at a fixed (hyperbolic) time, by going to large spatial distances on its two sheets. The Hamiltonian formulation and -- in particular -- a conserved angular momentum, can only be constructed if one brings in both, the electric and magnetic BMS charges, together with their canonically conjugate "memories". This reveals a close interplay between the BMS and electric-magnetic duality symmetries.

We construct an analytic black hole solution in $SU(2)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions supporting a Meron field. The gauge field is proportional to a pure gauge and has a non-trivial topological charge. The would-be singularity at the Meron core gets shielded from the exterior by the black hole horizon. The metric has only one integration constant, namely, its ADM mass, which is shown to be finite once an appropriate boundary term is added to the action. The thermodynamics is also worked out, and a first-order phase transition, similar to the one occurring in the Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m case is identified. We also show that the solution produces a \mbox{\textit{spin from isospin effect}}, i.e., even though the theory is constructed out of bosons only, the combined system of a scalar field and this background may become fermionic. More specifically, we study scalar excitations in this purely bosonic background and find that the system describes fermionic degrees of freedom at spatial infinity. Finally, for the asymptotically $AdS_{5}$ case, we study its consequences in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

We present a new application of the Regge-Teitelboim method for treating symmetries which are defined asymptotically. It may be regarded as complementary to the one in their original 1974 paper. The formulation is based on replacing an asymptotic plane by the two--sheeted ``hourglass" shaped surface obtained by joining smoothly an incoming hyperboloid with an outgoing one. The hyperboloids have a fixed radius, and as one moves the center of the hourglass along the time axis one covers the whole of spacetime. The motivation is to study radiation, and the hourglass is well suited to the task because it is asymptotically null, and thus is able to register the details of the process. A simple parity condition for the fields on the hyperboloid is given. It specifies that as much radiation as is coming in as it is going out. With it, a Hamiltonian formulation of the symmetry of Bondi, van der Burg, Metzner and Sachs is developed fir both electromagnetism and gravitation. It is indispensable for the construction to have electric--magnetic duality asymptotically. For gravitation, a formulation for the linearized theory on the hourglass has not been explicitly constructed; but enough rudiments of it are given so that the main results can be established. A definition for angular momentum wish is conserved (for which the ``magnetic sector'' is essential) is given. It incorporates an interrelationship between spin and charge. For the gravitational field, Taub-NUT space appears as the analog of a magnetic pole.

In the last ten years, the technology of differential geometry, ubiquitous in gravitational physics, has found its place in the field of optics. It has been successfully used in the design of optical metamaterials, through a technique now known as "transformation optics". This method, however, only applies for the particular class of metamaterials known as impedance matched, that is, materials whose electric permittivity is equal to their magnetic permeability. In that case, the material may be described by a spacetime metric. In the present work we will introduce a generalization of the geometric methods of transformation optics to situations in which the material is not impedance matched. In such situation, the material -or more precisely, its constitutive tensor- will not be described by a metric only. We bring in a second tensor, with the local symmetries of the Weyl tensor, the "$W$-tensor". In the geometric optics approximation we show how the properties of the $W$-tensor are related to the asymmetric transmission of the material. We apply this feature into the design of a particularly interesting set of asymmetric materials. These materials are birefringent when light rays approach the material in a given direction, but behave just like vacuum when the rays have the opposite direction with the appropriate polarization (or, in some cases, independently of the polarization).

From the point of view of elementary particle physics the gravitational constant $G$ is extraordinarily small. This has led to ask whether it could have decayed to its present value from an initial one commensurate with microscopical units. A mechanism that leads to such a decay is proposed herein. It is based on assuming that $G$ may take different values within regions of the universe separated by a novel kind of domain wall, a "G-wall". The idea is implemented by introducing a gauge potential $A_{μνρ}$, and its conjugate $D$, which determines the value of $G$ as an integration constant rather than a fundamental constant. The value of $G$ jumps when one goes through a $G$-wall. The procedure extends one previously developed for the cosmological constant, but the generalization is far from straightforward: (i) The intrinsic geometry of a $G$-wall is not the same as seen from its two sides, because the second law of black hole thermodynamics mandates that the jump in $G$ must cause a discontinuity in the scale of length. (ii) The size of the decay step in $G$ is controlled by a function $G(D)$ which may be chosen so as to diminish the value of $G$ towards the asymptote $G=0$, without fine tuning. It is shown that: (i) The dynamics of the gravitational field with $G$ treated as a dynamical variable, coupled to $G$-walls and matter, follows from an action principle, which is given. (ii) A particle that impinges on a $G$-wall may be refracted or reflected. (iii) The various forces between two particles change when a $G$-wall is inserted in between them. (iv) $G$-walls may be nucleated trough tunneling and thermal effects. The semiclassical probabilities are evaluated. (v)~If the action principle is constructed properly, the entropy of a black hole increases when the value of the gravitational constant is changed through the absorption of a G-wall by the hole.

We use Lanczos-Gauss-Bonnet (LGB) theory with a positive cosmological constant as a toy model. This theory has two maximally symmetric vacua with positive (dS) and negative (AdS) constant curvature. We show that a phase transition from the AdS vacuum to a dS black hole geometry takes place when the temperature reaches a critical value. The transition is produced by nucleation of bubbles of the new phase that expand afterwards. We claim that this phenomenon is not particular to the model under study, and shall also be part of generic gravitational theories with higher-curvature terms.

We investigate a novel mechanism for phase transitions that is a distinctive feature of higher-curvature gravity theories. For definiteness, we bound ourselves to the case of Lovelock gravities. These theories are known to have several branches of asymptotically AdS solutions. Here, extending our previous work, we show that phase transitions among some of these branches are driven by a thermalon configuration: a bubble separating two regions of different effective cosmological constants, generically hosting a black hole in the interior. Above some critical temperature, this thermalon configuration is preferred with respect to the finite-temperature AdS space, triggering a sophisticated version of the Hawking-Page transition. After being created, the unstable bubble configuration can in general dynamically change the asymptotic cosmological constant. While this phenomenon already occurs in the case of a gravity action with square curvature terms, we point out that in the case of Lovelock theory with cubic (and higher) terms new effects appear. For instance, the theory may admit more than one type of bubble and branches that are in principle free of pathologies may also decay through the thermalon mechanism. We also find ranges of the gravitational couplings for which the theory becomes sick. These add up to previously found restrictions to impose tighter constraints on higher-curvature gravities. The results of this paper point to an intricate phase diagram which might accommodate similarly rich behavior in the dual CFT side.

We show that in general, it is not possible, but that the number of couples that do can be maximized. The problem turns out to be equivalent to finding the ground state of a spin glass system, which is known to be equivalent to what is called a weighted max-cut problem in graph theory, and hence it is NP-Complete.

It is invariant under the action of the two-dimensional conformal group, which, in the gravitational context, corresponds to the asymptotic symmetries of asymptotically AdS geometries. In the flat case, when the cosmological term is turned off, a theory describing gravity at the boundary is absent. In this note we show that, in the Hamiltonian setup, such a theory may be constructed. We set forth a new type of phase transition that might take place in gravitational theories whenever higher-curvature corrections are considered. It can be regarded as a sophisticated version of the Hawking-Page transition, mediated by the nucleation of a bubble in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. The bubble hosts a black hole in its interior, and separates two spacetime regions with different effective cosmological constants. We compute the free energy of this configuration and compare it with that of thermal AdS. The result suggests that a phase transition actually occurs above certain critical temperature, ultimately changing the value of the cosmological constant. We discuss the consistency of the thermodynamic picture and its possible relevance in the context of AdS/CFT.

Recently, the concept of dynamical extended charged events has been introduced, and it has been argued that they should play as central a role as that played by particles or ordinary branes. In this article we show that in the presence of a Chern-Simons coupling, a magnetically charged extended event emits an extended object, which geometrically is just like a Dirac string, but it is observable, obeys equations of motion, and may be electrically charged. We write a complete action principle which accounts for this effect. The action involves two Chern-Simons terms, one integrated over spacetime and the other integrated over the worldvolume of the submanifold that is the union of the Dirac world-sheet and the history of the emitted physical object. By demanding that the total charge emitted by a composite extended magnetic event be quantized according to Dirac's rule, we find a quantization condition for the Chern-Simons coupling. For a 1-form electric potential in D=2n+1 spacetime dimensions, the composite event is formed by n elementary extended magnetic events separated in time such that the product of their transverse spaces, together with the time axis, is the entire spacetime. We show that the emitted electric charge is given by the integral of the (n-1)-th exterior power of the electromagnetic field strength over the last elementary event, or, equivalently, over an appropriate closed surface. The extension to more general p-form potentials and higher dimensions is also discussed. For the case D=11, p=3, our result for the quantization of the Chern-Simons coupling was obtained previously in the context of M-theory, a remarkable agreement that makes the existence of events even more compelling.

A modified version of the double potential formalism for the electrodynamics of dyons is constructed. Besides the two vector potentials, this manifestly duality invariant formulation involves four additional potentials, scalar potentials which appear as Lagrange multipliers for the electric and magnetic Gauss constraints and potentials for the longitudinal electric and magnetic fields. In this framework, a static dyon appears as a Coulomb-like solution without string singularities. Dirac strings are needed only for the Lorentz force law, not for Maxwell's equations. The magnetic charge no longer appears as a topological conservation law but as a surface integral on a par with electric charge. The theory is generalized to curved space. As in flat space, the string singularities of dyonic black holes are resolved. As a consequence all singularities are protected by the horizon and the thermodynamics is shown to follow from standard arguments in the grand canonical ensemble.

The 2+1 black hole coupled to a Maxwell field can be charged in two different ways. On the one hand, it can support a Coulomb field whose potential grows logarithmically in the radial coordinate. On the other, due to the existence of a non-contractible cycle, it also supports a topological charge whose value is given by the corresponding Abelian holonomy. Only the Coulomb charge, however, is given by a constant flux integral with an associated continuity equation. The topological charge does not gravitate and is somehow decoupled from the black hole. This situation changes abruptly if one turns on the Chern-Simons term for the Maxwell field. First, the flux integral at infinity becomes equal to the topological charge. Second, demanding regularity of the black hole horizon, it is found that the Coulomb charge (whose associated potential now decays by a power law) must vanish identically. Hence, in 2+1 topologically massive electrodynamics coupled to gravity, the black hole can only support holonomies for the Maxwell field. This means that the charged black hole, as the uncharged one, is constructed from the vacuum by means of spacetime identifications.

In this paper we consider spacetimes in vacuum general relativity --possibly coupled to a scalar field-- with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. We employ the Isolated Horizons (IH) formalism where the boundary conditions imposed are that of two horizons, one of black hole type and the other, serving as outer boundary, a cosmological horizon. As particular cases, we consider the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, in both 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. Within the IH formalism, it is useful to define two different notions of energy for the cosmological horizon, namely, the "mass" and the "energy". Empty de Sitter space provides an striking example of such distinction: its horizon energy is zero but the horizon mass takes a finite value given by $π/(2\sqrtΛ)$. For both horizons we study their thermodynamic properties, compare our results with those of Euclidean Hamiltonian methods and construct some generalized Bekenstein entropy bounds. We discuss these new entropy bounds and compare them with some recently proposed entropy bounds in the cosmological setting.

We show that the cosmological constant may be reduced by thermal production of membranes by the cosmological horizon, analogous to a particle ``going over the top of the potential barrier", rather than tunneling through it. The membranes are endowed with charge associated with the gauge invariance of an antisymmetric gauge potential. In this new process, the membrane collapses into a black hole, thus the net effect is to produce black holes out of the vacuum energy associated with the cosmological constant. We study here the corresponding Euclidean configurations ("thermalons"), and calculate the probability for the process in the leading semiclassical approximation.

The action and the thermodynamics of a rotating black hole in the presence of a positive cosmological constant are analyzed. Since there is no spatial infinity, one must bring in, instead, a platform where the parameters characterizing the thermodynamic ensemble are specified. In the present treatment the platform in question is taken to be one of the two horizons, which is considered as a boundary. If the boundary is taken to be the cosmological horizon one deals with the action and thermodynamics of the black hole horizon. Conversely, if one takes the black hole horizon as the boundary, one deals with the action and thermodynamics of the cosmological horizon. The two systems are different. Their energy and angular momenta are equal in magnitude but have opposite sign. In either case, the energy and the angular momentum are obtained as surface terms on the boundary, according to the standard Hamiltonian procedure. The temperature and the rotational chemical potential are also expressed in terms of magnitudes on the boundary. If, in the resulting expressions, one continues the cosmological constant to negative values, the black hole thermodynamic parameters defined on the cosmological horizon coincide with those calculated at spatial infinity in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter case.

We compare our results with the bosonic sector of eleven dimensional supergravity and find that the Chern--Simons coupling constant in that case takes its corresponding minimal allowed value.

It is shown in this paper that a different, new, membrane nucleation process exists, which, in addition to lowering the cosmological constant, leaves a black hole behind. Once a black hole is present, the relaxation of the cosmological constant may proceed via an analog of the old process, which decreases the black hole horizon area, or via the new process, which increases it.

On group averaging for non-compact groups
Authors:
Andres Gomberoff
Abstract:
We review some aspects of the use of a technique known as group averaging, which provides a tool for the study of constrained systems. We focus our attention on the case where the gauge group is non-compact, and a `renormalized' group averaging method must be introduced. We discuss the connection between superselection sectors and the rate of divergence of the group averaging integral.

The D4-brane, which terminates on the D6-brane, can be equally well interpreted as a `pure multipole' configuration of NS5-brane wrapped tightly around the D6-brane. Such a transmutation is a "near-core" version (i.e., near the D6-brane) of the brane-creation that can occur when two branes pass through each other, as in the Hanany-Witten construction. The work below highlights certain charge non-conservation features of type IIA supergravity.

In particular, the Lorentzian theory with a positive cosmological constant is dual to the Euclidean theory with a negative cosmological constant. We use this duality to construct a mapping between apparently unrelated space-times. More precisely, we exhibit a relation between the Euclidean BTZ family and some $T^2$-cosmological solutions, and between De-Sitter point particle space-times and the analytic continuations of Anti-De Sitter point particles. We discuss some possible applications for BH and AdS thermodynamics.

We study fully localized BPS brane solutions in classical supergravity using a perturbative approach to the coupled Born-Infeld/bulk supergravity system. We derive first order bulk supergravity fields for world-volume solitons corresponding to intersecting M2-branes and to a fundamental string ending on a D3-brane. One interesting feature is the appearance of certain off-diagonal metric components and corresponding components of the gauge potentials. Making use of a supersymmetric ansatz for the exact fields, we formulate a perturbative expansion which applies to $M2 \perp M2 (0), M5 \perp M5 (3)$ and $Dp \perp Dp (p-2)$ intersections. We find that perturbation theory qualitatively distinguishes between certain of these cases: perturbation theory breaks down at second order for intersecting M2-branes and D$p$-branes with $p\le 3$ while it is well behaved, at least to this order, for the remaining cases. This indicates that the behavior of the full non-linear intersecting Dp-brane solutions may be qualitatively different for $p \le 3$ than for $p \ge 4$, and that fully localized asymptotically flat solutions for $p \le 3$ may not exist. We discuss the consistency of these results with world-volume field theory properties.

We discuss dyons, charge quantization and electric-magnetic duality for self-interacting, abelian, p-form theories in the spacetime dimensions D=2(p+1) where dyons can be present. The corresponding quantization conditions and duality properties are strikingly different depending on whether p is odd or even. If p is odd one has the familiar eg'-ge'= 2nh, whereas for even p one finds the opposite relative sign, eg'+ge'= 2nh. These conditions are obtained by introducing Dirac strings and taking due account of the multiple connectedness of the configuration space of the strings and the dyons. A two-potential formulation of the theory that treats the electric and magnetic sources on the same footing is also given.
Our results hold for arbitrary gauge invariant self-interaction of the fields and are valid irrespective of their duality properties.

Abstract:
Examples of the construction of Hamiltonian structures for dynamical systems in field theory (including one reputedly non-Hamiltonian problem) without using Lagrangians, are presented. The recently developed method used requires the knowledge of one constant of the motion of the system under consideration and one solution of the symmetry equation.

We investigate duality properties of N-form fields, provide a symmetric way of coupling them to electric/magnetic sources, and check that these charges obey the appropriate quantization requirements. First, we contrast the D=4k case, in which duality is a well-defined SO(2) rotation generated by a Chern-Simons form leaving the action invariant, and D=4k+2 where the corresponding ostensibly SO(1,1) rotation is not only not an invariance but does not even have a generator. When charged sources are included we show explicitly in the Maxwell case how the usual Dirac quantization arises in a fully symmetric approach attaching strings to both types of charges. Finally, for D=4k+2 systems, we show how charges can be introduced for self-dual (2k)-forms, and obtain the D=4k models with sources by dimensional reduction, tracing their duality invariance to a partial invariance in the higher dimensions.
