It was launched from New Zealand then, for 40 days, circumnavigated the globe five times at a latitude 40 to 50 degrees South. Attached to the telescope were four 'DRS' (Data Recovery System) capsules containing 5 TB solid state data storage, plus a GNSS receiver, Iridium transmitter, and parachute. Data from the telescope were copied to these, and two were dropped over Argentina. They drifted 61 km horizontally while they descended 32 km, but we predicted their descent vectors within 2.4 km: in this location, the discrepancy appears irreducible below 2 km because of high speed, gusty winds and local topography. The capsules then reported their own locations to within a few metres. We recovered the capsules and successfully retrieved all of superBIT's data - despite the telescope itself being later destroyed on landing.

This paper is devoted to the study of the spectral properties of the Weyl-Dirac or massless Dirac operators, describing the behavior of quantum quasi-particles in dimension 2 in a homogeneous magnetic field, $B^{\rm ext}$, perturbed by a chiral-magnetic field, $b^{\rm ind}$, with decay at infinity and a short-range scalar electric potential, $V$, of the Bessel-Macdonald type. These operators emerge from the action of a pristine graphene-like QED$_3$ model recently proposed in Eur. Phys. J. B93} (2020) 187. First, we establish the existence of states in the discrete spectrum of the Weyl-Dirac operators between the zeroth and the first (degenerate) Landau level assuming that $V=0$. In sequence, with $V_s \not= 0$, where $V_s$ is an attractive potential associated with the $s$-wave, which emerges when analyzing the $s$- and $p$-wave Møller scattering potentials among the charge carriers in the pristine graphene-like QED$_3$ model, we provide lower bounds for the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operators $|\boldsymbolσ \cdot \boldsymbol{p}_{\boldsymbol{A}_\pm}|+ V_s$. Here, $\boldsymbolσ$ is the vector of Pauli matrices, $\boldsymbol{p}_{\boldsymbol{A}_\pm}=\boldsymbol{p}-\boldsymbol{A}_\pm$, with $\boldsymbol{p}=-i\boldsymbol{\nabla}$ the two-dimensional momentum operator and $\boldsymbol{A}_\pm$ certain magnetic vector potentials. As a by-product of this, we have the stability of bipolarons in graphene in the presence of magnetic fields.

Magnetic monopoles have been a subject of study for more than a century since the first ideas by A. Vaschy and P. Curie, circa 1890. In 1974, Y. Nambu proposed a model for magnetic monopoles exploring a parallelism between the broken symmetry Higgs and the superconductivity Ginzburg-Landau theories in order to describe the pions quark-antiquark confinement states. There, Nambu describes an energetic string where its end points behave like two magnetic monopoles with opposite magnetic charges -- quark and antiquark. Consequently, not only the interaction among monopole and antimonopole, mediated by a massive vector boson (Yukawa potential), but also the energetic string (linear potential) contributes to the effective interaction potential. We propose here a monopole-antimonopole non confining attractive interaction of the Nambu-type, and then investigate the formation of bound states, the monopolium. Some necessary conditions for the existence of bound states to be fulfilled by the proposed Nambu-type potential, Kato weakness, Setô and Bargmann conditions, are verified. In the following, ground state energies are estimated for a variety of monopolium reduced mass, from $10^2$MeV to $10^2$TeV, and Compton interaction lengths, from $10^{-2}$am to $10^{-1}$pm, where discussion about non relativistic and relativistic limits validation is carried out.

Quantum parity conservation is verified at all orders in perturbation theory for a massless parity-even $U(1)\times U(1)$ planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) model. The presence of two massless fermions requires the Lowenstein-Zimmermann (LZ) subtraction scheme, in the framework of the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk-Hepp-Zimmermann-Lowenstein (BPHZL) renormalization method, in order to subtract the infrared divergences induced by the ultraviolet subtractions at 1- and 2-loops, however thanks to the superrenormalizability of the model the ultraviolet divergences are bounded up to 2-loops. Finally, it is proved that the BPHZL renormalization method preserves parity for the model taken into consideration, contrary to what happens to the ordinary massless parity-even $U(1)$ QED$_3$.

The Brown-Ravenhall operator was initially proposed as an alternative to describe the fermion-fermion interaction via Coulomb potential and subject to relativity. This operator is defined in terms of the associated Dirac operator and the projection onto the positive spectral subspace of the free Dirac operator. In this paper, we propose to analyze a modified version of the Brown-Ravenhall operator in two-dimensions. More specifically, we consider the Brown-Ravenhall operator with a short-range attractive potential given by a Bessel-Macdonald function (also known as $K_0$-potential) using the Foldy-Wouthuysen unitary transformation. Initially, we prove that the two-dimensional Brown-Ravenhall operator with $K_0$-potential is bounded from below when the coupling constant is below a specified critical value (a property also referred to as stability). A major feature of this model is the fact that it does not cease to be bounded below even if the coupling constant is above the specified critical value. We also investigate the nature of the spectrum of this operator, in particular the location of the essential spectrum, and the existence of eigenvalues, which are either isolated from the essential spectrum or embedded in it.

Unseen or out-of-domain data can seriously degrade the performance of a neural network model, indicating the model's failure to generalize to unseen data. Neural net pruning can not only help to reduce a model's size but can improve the model's generalization capacity as well. Pruning approaches look for low-salient neurons that are less contributive to a model's decision and hence can be removed from the model. This work investigates if pruning approaches are successful in detecting neurons that are either high-salient (mostly active or hyper) or low-salient (barely active or hypo), and whether removal of such neurons can help to improve the model's generalization capacity. Traditional blind adaptation techniques update either the whole or a subset of layers, but have never explored selectively updating individual neurons across one or more layers. Focusing on the fully connected layers of a convolutional neural network (CNN), this work shows that it may be possible to selectively adapt certain neurons (consisting of the hyper and the hypo neurons) first, followed by a full-network fine tuning. Using the task of automatic speech recognition, this work demonstrates how the removal of hyper and hypo neurons from a model can improve the model's performance on out-of-domain speech data and how selective neuron adaptation can ensure improved performance when compared to traditional blind model adaptation.

The rapid population aging has stimulated the development of assistive devices that provide personalized medical support to the needies suffering from various etiologies. One prominent clinical application is a computer-assisted speech training system which enables personalized speech therapy to patients impaired by communicative disorders in the patient's home environment. Such a system relies on the robust automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology to be able to provide accurate articulation feedback. With the long-term aim of developing off-the-shelf ASR systems that can be incorporated in clinical context without prior speaker information, we compare the ASR performance of speaker-independent bottleneck and articulatory features on dysarthric speech used in conjunction with dedicated neural network-based acoustic models that have been shown to be robust against spectrotemporal deviations. We report ASR performance of these systems on two dysarthric speech datasets of different characteristics to quantify the achieved performance gains. Despite the remaining performance gap between the dysarthric and normal speech, significant improvements have been reported on both datasets using speaker-independent ASR architectures.

We analyze the Schrödinger operator in two-dimensions with an attractive potential given by a Bessel-Macdonald function. This operator is derived in the non-relativistic approximation of planar quantum electrodynamics (${\rm QED}_3$) models as a framework for evaluation of two-quasiparticle scattering potentials. The analysis is motivated keeping in mind the fact that parity-preserving ${\rm QED}_3$ models can provide a possible explanation for the behavior of superconductors. Initially, we study the self-adjointness and spectral properties of the Schrödinger operator modeling the non-relativistic approximation of these ${\rm QED}_3$ models. Then, by using {\em Setô-type estimates}, an estimate is derived of the number of two-particle bound states which depends directly on the value of the effective coupling constant, $C$, for {\em any} value of the angular momentum. In fact, this result in connection with the condition that guarantees the self-adjointness of the Schrödinger operator shows that there can always be a large number of two-quasiparticle bound states in planar quantum electrodynamics models. In particular, we show the existence of an isolated two-quasiparticle bound state if the effective coupling constant $C \in (0,2)$ in case of zero angular momentum. To the best of our knowledge, this result has not yet been addressed in the literature. Additionally, we obtain an explicit estimate for the energy gap of two-quasiparticle bound states which might be applied to high-$T_c$ $s$-wave Cooper-type superconductors as well as to $s$-wave electron-polaron--electron-polaron bound states (bipolarons) in mass-gap graphene systems.

In this work, we investigate the joint use of articulatory and acoustic features for automatic speech recognition (ASR) of pathological speech. Despite long-lasting efforts to build speaker- and text-independent ASR systems for people with dysarthria, the performance of state-of-the-art systems is still considerably lower on this type of speech than on normal speech. The most prominent reason for the inferior performance is the high variability in pathological speech that is characterized by the spectrotemporal deviations caused by articulatory impairments due to various etiologies. To cope with this high variation, we propose to use speech representations which utilize articulatory information together with the acoustic properties. A designated acoustic model, namely a fused-feature-map convolutional neural network (fCNN), which performs frequency convolution on acoustic features and time convolution on articulatory features is trained and tested on a Dutch and a Flemish pathological speech corpus. The ASR performance of fCNN-based ASR system using joint features is compared to other neural network architectures such conventional CNNs and time-frequency convolutional networks (TFCNNs) in several training scenarios.

This paper introduces the Voices Obscured In Complex Environmental Settings (VOICES) corpus, a freely available dataset under Creative Commons BY 4.0. This dataset will promote speech and signal processing research of speech recorded by far-field microphones in noisy room conditions. Publicly available speech corpora are mostly composed of isolated speech at close-range microphony. A typical approach to better represent realistic scenarios, is to convolve clean speech with noise and simulated room response for model training. Despite these efforts, model performance degrades when tested against uncurated speech in natural conditions. For this corpus, audio was recorded in furnished rooms with background noise played in conjunction with foreground speech selected from the LibriSpeech corpus. Multiple sessions were recorded in each room to accommodate for all foreground speech-background noise combinations. Audio was recorded using twelve microphones placed throughout the room, resulting in 120 hours of audio per microphone. This work is a multi-organizational effort led by SRI International and Lab41 with the intent to push forward state-of-the-art distant microphone approaches in signal processing and speech recognition.

The measure of quantum entanglement is determined for any dimer, either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems in the presence of external magnetic field. The physical quantity proposed as a measure of thermal quantum entanglement is the distance between states defined through the Hilbert-Schmidt norm. It has been shown that for ferromagnetic systems there is no entanglement at all. However, although under applied magnetic field, antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 dimers exhibit entanglement for temperatures below the decoherence temperature -- the one above which the entanglement vanishes. In addition to that, the decoherence temperature shows to be proportional to the exchange coupling constant and independent on the applied magnetic field, consequently, the entanglement may not be destroyed by external magnetic fields -- the phenomenon of {\it magnetic shielding effect of quantum entanglement states}. This effect is discussed for the binuclear nitrosyl iron complex [Fe$_2$(SC$_3$H$_5$N$_2$)$_2$(NO)$_4$] and it is foreseen that the quantum entanglement survives even under high magnetic fields of Tesla orders of magnitude.

Unseen data can degrade performance of deep neural net acoustic models. To cope with unseen data, adaptation techniques are deployed. For unlabeled unseen data, one must generate some hypothesis given an existing model, which is used as the label for model adaptation. However, assessing the goodness of the hypothesis can be difficult, and an erroneous hypothesis can lead to poorly trained models. In such cases, a strategy to select data having reliable hypothesis can ensure better model adaptation. This work proposes a data-selection strategy for DNN model adaptation, where DNN output layer activations are used to ascertain the goodness of a generated hypothesis. In a DNN acoustic model, the output layer activations are used to generate target class probabilities. Under unseen data conditions, the difference between the most probable target and the next most probable target is decreased compared to the same for seen data, indicating that the model may be uncertain while generating its hypothesis. This work proposes a strategy to assess a model's performance by analyzing the output layer activations by using a distance measure between the most likely target and the next most likely target, which is used for data selection for performing unsupervised adaptation.

This paper explores the use of multi-view features and their discriminative transforms in a convolutional deep neural network (CNN) architecture for a continuous large vocabulary speech recognition task. Mel-filterbank energies and perceptually motivated forced damped oscillator coefficient (DOC) features are used after feature-space maximum-likelihood linear regression (fMLLR) transforms, which are combined and fed as a multi-view feature to a single CNN acoustic model. Use of multi-view feature representation demonstrated significant reduction in word error rates (WERs) compared to the use of individual features by themselves. In addition, when articulatory information was used as an additional input to a fused deep neural network (DNN) and CNN acoustic model, it was found to demonstrate further reduction in WER for the Switchboard subset and the CallHome subset (containing partly non-native accented speech) of the NIST 2000 conversational telephone speech test set, reducing the error rate by 12% relative to the baseline in both cases. This work shows that multi-view features in association with articulatory information can improve speech recognition robustness to spontaneous and non-native speech.

Unseen data conditions can inflict serious performance degradation on systems relying on supervised machine learning algorithms. Because data can often be unseen, and because traditional machine learning algorithms are trained in a supervised manner, unsupervised adaptation techniques must be used to adapt the model to the unseen data conditions. However, unsupervised adaptation is often challenging, as one must generate some hypothesis given a model and then use that hypothesis to bootstrap the model to the unseen data conditions. Unfortunately, reliability of such hypotheses is often poor, given the mismatch between the training and testing datasets. In such cases, a model hypothesis confidence measure enables performing data selection for the model adaptation. Underlying this approach is the fact that for unseen data conditions, data variability is introduced to the model, which the model propagates to its output decision, impacting decision reliability. In a fully connected network, this data variability is propagated as distortions from one layer to the next. This work aims to estimate the propagation of such distortion in the form of network activation entropy, which is measured over a short- time running window on the activation from each neuron of a given hidden layer, and these measurements are then used to compute summary entropy. This work demonstrates that such an entropy measure can help to select data for unsupervised model adaptation, resulting in performance gains in speech recognition tasks. Results from standard benchmark speech recognition tasks show that the proposed approach can alleviate the performance degradation experienced under unseen data conditions by iteratively adapting the model to the unseen datas acoustic condition.

During the EBEX2013 long duration flight the payload was free to rotate in azimuth. The observed azimuth motion consisted of a superposition of full rotations with a period of 10-30 minutes and oscillatory motion with an amplitude of tens of degrees, average period of 79 s, and period dispersion of 12 s. We interpret the full rotations as induced by slow rotations of the balloon and the shorter period oscillatory motion as due to torsional oscillations of the flight line. We derive the torsional stiffness of the flight line using the bifilar pendulum model and apply it to the flight line of the EBEX2013 payload. We find a torsional spring constant of 36 kg m$^2$/s$^2$ corresponding to a period of 58 s. We conclude that the bifilar model, which accounts for the geometry of the flight line but neglects all material properties, predicts a stiffness and period that are 45% larger and 25% shorter than those observed. It is useful to have a simple, easy to use, coarse approximation for the torsional constant of the flight line.

We reassess the problem of separability of the kinematic Hilbert space in loop quantum gravity under a new mathematical point of view. We use the formalism of frames, a tool used in signal analysis, in order to remove the redundancy of the moduli structures in high valence graphs, without resorting to set extension of diffeomorphism group. For this, we introduce a local redundancy which encodes the concentration of frame vectors on the tangent spaces $T_pM$ around points of intersections $p$ of smooth loops $α$ in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$.

In this letter we call into question the perturbatively parity breakdown at 1-loop for the massless QED_3 frequently claimed in the literature. As long as perturbative quantum field theory is concerned, whether a parity anomaly owing to radiative corrections exists or not will be definitely proved by using a renormalization method independent of any regularization scheme. Such a problem has been investigated in the framework of BPHZL renormalization method, by adopting the Lowenstein-Zimmermann subtraction scheme. The 1-loop parity-odd contribution to the vacuum-polarization tensor is explicitly computed in the framework of the BPHZL renormalization method. It is shown that a Chern-Simons term is generated at that order induced through the infrared subtractions -- which violate parity. We show then that, what is called parity anomaly, is in fact a parity-odd counterterm needed for restauring parity.

In the present paper, we intent to enlarge the axiomatic framework of non-commutative quantum field theories (QFT). We consider QFT on non-commutative spacetimes in terms of the tempered ultrahyperfunctions of Sebastião e Silva corresponding to a convex cone, within the framework formulated by Wightman. Tempered ultrahyperfunctions are representable by means of holomorphic functions. As is well known there are certain advantages to be gained from the representation of distributions in terms of holomorphic functions. In particular, for non-commutative theories the Wightman functions involving the $\star$-product, ${\mathfrak W}^\star_m$, have the same form as the standard form ${\mathfrak W}_m$. We conjecture that the functions ${\mathfrak W}^\star_m$ satisfy a set of properties which actually will characterize a non-commutative QFT in terms of tempered ultrahyperfunctions. In order to support this conjecture, we prove for this setting the validity of some important theorems, of which the CPT theorem and the theorem on the Spin-Statistics connection are the best known. We assume the validity of these theorems for non-commutative QFT in the case of spatial non-commutativity only.

We propose an alternative axiomatic description for non-commutative field theories (NCFT) based on some ideas by Soloviev to nonlocal quantum fields. The local commutativity axiom is replaced by the weaker condition that the fields commute at sufficiently large spatial separations, called asymptotic commutativity, formulated in terms of the theory of analytic functionals. The question of a possible violation of the CPT and Spin-Statistics theorems caused by nonlocality of the commutation relations $[\hat{x}_μ,\hat{x}_ν]=iθ_{μν}$ is investigated. In spite of this inherent nonlocality, we show that the modification aforementioned is sufficient to ensure the validity of these theorems for NCFT. We restrict ourselves to the simplest model of a scalar field in the case of only space-space non-commutativity.

We propose the extension of some structural aspects that have successfully been applied in the development of the theory of quantum fields propagating on a general spacetime manifold so as to include superfield models on a supermanifold. We only deal with the limited class of supermanifolds which admit the existence of a smooth body manifold structure. Our considerations are based on the Catenacci-Reina-Teofillatto-Bryant approach to supermanifolds. In particular, we show that the class of supermanifolds constructed by Bonora-Pasti-Tonin satisfies the criterions which guarantee that a supermanifold admits a Hausdorff body manifold. This construction is the closest to the physicist's intuitive view of superspace as a manifold with some anticommuting coordinates, where the odd sector is topologically trivial. The paper also contains a new construction of superdistributions and useful results on the wavefront set of such objects. Moreover, a generalization of the spectral condition is formulated using the notion of the wavefront set of superdistributions, which is equivalent to the requirement that all of the component fields satisfy, on the body manifold, a microlocal spectral condition proposed by Brunetti-Fredenhagen-Köhler.

This formalism, which includes a set of Grassmann parameters defined as the BRS variations of the gauge-fixing parameters, allows us to derive in a quick and unambiguous way the related Nielsen identities, which express the physical gauge independence, in a class of generalized 't Hooft gauges, of the effective potential. Considering the simple chiral fermion meson model when the chiral symmetry is explicitly broken, we show the validity of a trace identity -- to all orders of perturbation theory -- playing the role of a Callan-Symanzik equation and which allows us to identify directly the breaking of dilatations with the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. More precisely, by coupling the quantum field theory considered to a classical curved space background, represented by the non-propagating external vielbein field, we can express the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor through the Ward identity which characterizes the invariance of the theory under the diffeomorphisms. Our ``Callan-Symanzik equation'' then is the anomalous Ward identity for the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, the so-called ``trace identity''.
