A dichotomy on the self-similarity of graph-directed attractors
Abstract: This paper seeks conditions that ensure that the attractor of a graph directed iterated function system (GD-IFS) cannot be realised as the attractor of a standard iterated function system (IFS). For a strongly connected directed graph, it is known that, if all directed circuits go through a vertex, then for any GD-IFS of similarities on $\mathbb{R}$ based on the graph and satisfying the convex ope… ▽ More

Box-counting dimension in one-dimensional random geometry of multiplicative cascades
Abstract: We investigate the box-counting dimension of the image of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}$ under a random multiplicative cascade function $f$. The corresponding result for Hausdorff dimension was established by Benjamini and Schramm in the context of random geometry, and for sufficiently regular sets, the same formula holds for the box-counting dimension. However, we show that this is far from true in… ▽ More

Intermediate dimension of images of sequences under fractional Brownian motion
Abstract: We show that the almost sure $θ$-intermediate dimension of the image of the set $F_p =\{0, 1,\frac{1}{2^p},\frac{1}{3^p},\ldots\}$ under index-$h$ fractional Brownian motion is $\fracθ{ph+θ}$, a value that is smaller than that given by directly applying the Hölder bound for fractional Brownian motion. In particular this establishes the box-counting dimension of these images.

Intermediate dimensions -- a survey
Abstract: This article surveys the $θ$-intermediate dimensions that were introduced recently which provide a parameterised continuum of dimensions that run from Hausdorff dimension when $θ=0$ to box-counting dimensions when $θ=1$. We bring together diverse properties of intermediate dimensions which we illustrate by examples.

The fractal structure of elliptical polynomial spirals
Abstract: We investigate fractal aspects of elliptical polynomial spirals; that is, planar spirals with differing polynomial rates of decay in the two axis directions. We give a full dimensional analysis of these spirals, computing explicitly their intermediate, box-counting and Assouad-type dimensions. An exciting feature is that these spirals exhibit two phase transitions within the Assouad spectrum, the… ▽ More

$L^q$-spectra of measures on planar non-conformal attractors
Abstract: We study the $L^q$-spectrum of measures in the plane generated by certain nonlinear maps. In particular we consider attractors of iterated function systems consisting of maps whose components are $C^{1+α}$ and for which the Jacobian is a lower triangular matrix at every point subject to a natural domination condition on the entries. We calculate the $L^q$-spectrum of Bernoulli measures supported o… ▽ More

Minkowski dimension for measures
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to introduce and motivate the notion of Minkowski (or box) dimension for measures. The definition is simple and fills a gap in the existing literature on the dimension theory of measures. As the terminology suggests, we show that it can be used to characterise the Minkowski dimension of a compact metric space. We also study its relationship with other concepts in dim… ▽ More

Assouad dimension influences the box and packing dimensions of orthogonal projections
Abstract: We present several applications of the Assouad dimension, and the related quasi-Assouad dimension and Assouad spectrum, to the box and packing dimensions of orthogonal projections of sets. For example, we show that if the (quasi-)Assouad dimension of $F \subseteq \rn$ is no greater than $m$, then the box and packing dimensions of $F$ are preserved under orthogonal projections onto almost all $m$-d… ▽ More

Projection theorems for intermediate dimensions
Abstract: Intermediate dimensions were recently introduced to interpolate between the Hausdorff and box-counting dimensions of fractals. Firstly, we show that these intermediate dimensions may be defined in terms of capacities with respect to certain kernels. Then, relying on this, we show that the intermediate dimensions of the projection of a set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ onto almost all $m$-dimensional su… ▽ More

A capacity approach to box and packing dimensions of projections of sets and exceptional directions
Abstract: Dimension profiles were introduced in [8,11] to give a formula for the box-counting and packing dimensions of the orthogonal projections of a set $R^n$ onto almost all $m$-dimensional subspaces. However, these definitions of dimension profiles are indirect and are hard to work with. Here we firstly give alternative definitions of dimension profiles in terms of capacities of $E$ with respect to cer… ▽ More

Intermediate dimensions
Abstract: We introduce a continuum of dimensions which are `intermediate' between the familiar Hausdorff and box dimensions. This is done by restricting the families of allowable covers in the definition of Hausdorff dimension by insisting that $|U| \leq |V|^θ$ for all sets $U, V$ used in a particular cover, where $θ\in [0,1]$ is a parameter. Thus, when $θ=1$ only covers using sets of the same size are allo… ▽ More

Self-stabilizing processes based on random signs
Abstract: A self-stabilizing processes $\{Z(t), t\in [t_0,t_1)\}$ is a random process which when localized, that is scaled to a fine limit near a given $t\in [t_0,t_1)$, has the distribution of an $α(Z(t))$-stable process, where $α: \mathbb{R}\to (0,2)$ is a given continuous function. Thus the stability index near $t$ depends on the value of the process at $t$. In an earlier paper we constructed self-stabil… ▽ More

Self-stabilizing processes
Abstract: We construct `self-stabilizing' processes {Z(t), t $\in [t_0,t_1)$}. These are random processes which when `localized', that is scaled around t to a fine limit, have the distribution of an $α$(Z(t))-stable process, where $α$ is some given function on R. Thus the stability index at t depends on the value of the process at t. Here we address the case where $α$: R $\to$ (0,1). We first construct dete… ▽ More

A capacity approach to box and packing dimensions of projections and other images
Abstract: Dimension profiles were introduced by Falconer and Howroyd to provide formulae for the box-counting and packing dimensions of the orthogonal projections of a set E or a measure on Euclidean space onto almost all m-dimensional subspaces. A Hölder-type inequality on a regular rooted tree
Abstract: We establish an inequality which involves a non-negative function defined on the vertices of a finite $m$-ary regular rooted tree. The inequality may be thought of as relating an interaction energy defined on the free vertices of the tree summed over automorphisms of the tree, to a product of sums of powers of the function over vertices at certain levels of the tree. Attractors of directed graph IFSs that are not standard IFS attractors and their Hausdorff measure
Abstract: For directed graph iterated function systems (IFSs) defined on R, we prove that a class of 2-vertex directed graph IFSs have attractors that cannot be the attractors of standard (1-vertex directed graph) IFSs, with or without separation conditions. We also calculate their exact Hausdorff measure. Thus we are able to identify a new class of attractors for which the exact Hausdorff measure is known.

The horizon problem for prevalent surfaces
Abstract: We investigate the box dimensions of the horizon of a fractal surface defined by a function $f \in C[0,1]^2 $. Since a prevalent surface has box dimension 3, this does not give us any information about the horizon of surfaces of dimensi… ▽ More

The visible part of plane self-similar sets
Abstract: Given a compact subset $F$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$, the visible part $V_θF$ of $F$ from direction $θ$ is the set of $x$ in $F$ such that the half-line from $x$ in direction $θ$ intersects $F$ only at $x$. It is suggested that if $\dim_H F \geq 1$ then $\dim_H V_θF = 1$ for almost all $θ$, where $\dim_H$ denotes Hausdorff dimension. We confirm this when $F$ is a self-similar set satisfying the convex o… ▽ More

Dixmier traces and coarse multifractal analysis
Abstract: We show how multifractal properties of a measure supported by a fractal F contained in [0,1] may be expressed in terms of complementary intervals of F and thus in terms of spectral triples and the Dixmier trace of certain operators. For self-similar measures this leads to a noncommutative integral over $F$ equivalent to integration with respect to an auxilary multifractal measure.
