We present the results of near-infrared, follow-up imaging and spectroscopic observations at VLT, aimed at characterizing the long-period companions of the exoplanet host stars HD196885, HD1237 and HD27442. The three companions were previously discovered in the course of our CFHT and VLT coronographic imaging survey dedicated to the search for faint companions of exoplanet host stars. We used the NACO near-infrared adaptive optics instrument to obtain astrometric follow-up observations of HD196885 A and B. The long-slit spectroscopic mode of NACO and the integral field spectrograph SINFONI were used to carry out a low-resolution spectral characterization of the three companions HD196885 B, HD1237 B and HD27442 B between 1.4 and 2.5 microns. We can now confirm that the companion HD196885 B is comoving with its primary exoplanet host star, as previously shown for HD1237 B and HD27442 B. We find that both companions HD196885 B and HD1237 B are low-mass stars of spectral type M1V and M4V respectively. HD196885 AB is one of the closer (~23 AU) resolved binaries known to host an exoplanet. This system is then ideal for carrying out a combined radial velocity and astrometric investigation of the possible impact of the binary companion on the planetary system formation and evolution. Finally, we confirm via spectroscopy that HD27442 B is a white dwarf companion, the third one to be discovered orbiting an exoplanet host star, following HD147513 and Gliese 86. The detection of the broad Bracket gamma line of hydrogen indicates a white dwarf atmosphere dominated by hydrogen.

We report the discovery of companions to 5 nearby late M dwarfs (>M5), LHS1901, LHS4009, LHS6167, LP869-26 and WT460, and we confirm that the recently discovered mid-T brown dwarf companion to SCR1845-6357 is physically bound to that star. We present the results of multi epochs imaging observations of the companion to the planetary host Gliese 86. Associated to radial velocity measurements, this study aimed at characterizing dynamically the orbital properties and the mass of this companion (here after Gliese 86 B), but also at investigating the possible history of this particular system. We used the adaptive optics instrument NACO at the ESO Very Large Telescope to obtain deep coronographic imaging in order to determine new photometric and astrometric measurements of Gliese 86 B. Part of the orbit is resolved. The photometry of Gliese B indicates colors compatible with a ~70 Jupiter mass brown dwarf or a white dwarf. Both types of objects allow to fit the available, still limited astrometric data. Besides, if we attribute the long term radial velocity residual drift observed for Gliese A to B, then the mass of the latter object is ~0.5 Msun. We analyse both astrometric and radial velocity data to propose first orbital parameters for Gliese B. Assuming Gliese B is a ~0.5 Msun white dwarf, we explore the constraints induced by this hypothesis and refine the parameters of the system.

We present the results of a deep imaging survey of stars surrounded by planets detected with the radial velocity technique. The purpose is to search for and to characterize long-period stellar and substellar companions. The sample contains a total of 26 stars, among which 6 exhibit additional radial velocity drifts. We used NACO, at the ESO Very Large Telescope, and PUEO-KIR, at the Candian French Hawaiian Telescope, to conduct a near-infrared coronographic survey with adaptive optics of the faint circumstellar environment of the planetary hosts. The domain investigated ranges between 0.1 to 15" (i.e. about 3 to 500 AU, according to the mean distance of the sample). The survey is sensitive to companions within the stellar and the substellar domains, depending on the distance to the central stars and on the star properties. The images of 14 stars do not reveal any companions once the field objects are removed. 8 stars have close potential companions that need to be re-observed within 1-2 years to check for physical companionship. 4 stars are surrounded by faint objects which are confirmed or very probable companions. The companion to HD13445 (Gliese 86) is already known. The HD196885 star is a new close visual binary system with a high probability of being bound. The 2 newly discovered companions, HD1237 B and HD27442 B, share common proper motions with the central stars. Orbital motion is detected for HD1237 B. HD1237 B is likely a low-mass M star, located at 70 AU (projected distance) from the primary. HD27442 B is most probably a white dwarf companion located at about 240 AU (projected distance).

The derived binary fraction is different for individual star forming regions, suggesting a connection with the age and the environment conditions. The few studies that have investigated this connection do not provide conclusive results. To fill in this gap, we started the first detailed adaptive-optic-assisted imaging survey of early-type field stars to derive their multiplicity in a homogeneous way. The sample has been extracted from the Hipparcos Catalog and consists of 341 BA-type stars within ~300 pc from the Sun. We report the current status of the survey and describe a Monte-Carlo simulation that estimates the completeness of our companion detection.

We report new VLT/NACO imaging observations of the young, nearby brown dwarf 2MASSW J1207334-393254 and its suggested planetary mass companion (2M1207 b). Three epochs of VLT/NACO measurements obtained over nearly one year show that the planetary mass companion candidate shares the same proper motion and, with a high confidence level, is not a stationary background object. This result confirms the status of 2M1207 b as of planetary mass (5 times the mass of Jupiter) and the first image of a planetary mass companion in a different system than our own. This discovery offers new perspectives for our understanding of chemical and physical properties of planetary mass objects as well as their mechanisms of formation.

We report deep imaging observations of the young, nearby star AB Pic, a member of the large Tucana-Horologium as sociation. Abstract:
We present the discovery of a tight M8V binary, with a separation of only 1.2 astronomical units, obtained with the PUEO and NACO adaptive optics systems, respectively at the CFHT and VLT telescopes. The estimated period of LP 349-25 is approximately 5 years, and this makes it an excellent candidate for a precise mass measurement.

We report VLT/NACO imaging observations of the stars GSC 08047-00232 and HIP 6856, probable members of the large Tucana-Horologium association. During our previous ADONIS/SHARPII deep imaging survey, a substellar candidate companion was discovered around each star. Based on VLT/NACO astrometric measurements, we find that GSC 08047-00232 and the faint candidate companion near to it share the same proper motion with a significance of 3.1sigma. On the contrary, the candidate companion to HIP 6856 is probably a background object with a significance of 4.3sigma. We also detect a new fainter and closer candidate companion to HIP 6856, but which is likely a background object too with a significance of 4sigma. Recent VLT/NACO spectroscopic measurements of GSC 08047-00232 finally confirm the substellar nature of this young brown dwarf with a derived spectral type M9.5. GSC 08047-00232 B, with an estimated mass of 25MJup and an effective temperature of 2100K, is presently the third substellar companion identified among young, nearby associations.

We present deep VLT/NACO infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the brown dwarf 2MASSWJ1207334-393254, obtained during our on-going adaptive optics survey of southern young, nearby associations. This 25 MJup brown dwarf, located 70 pc from Earth, has been recently identified as a member of the TW Hydrae Association (age 8 Myr). Using adaptive optics infrared wavefront sensing to acquire sharp images of its circumstellar environment, we discovered a very faint and very red object at a close separation of 780 mas (55 AU). Photometry in the H, Ks and L' bands and upper limit in J-band are compatible with a spectral type L5-L9.5. Near-infrared spectroscopy is consistent with this spectral type estimate. Different evolutionary models predict an object within the planetary regime with a mass of 5+-2 MJup and an effective temperature of Teff=1250+-200K.

We present preliminary results of spectroscopic data obtained with the La Silla 3.6m TIMMI2 and the VLT-ISAAC instruments. We have obtained 23 TIMMI2 N-band and 18 Q-band spectra for our total sample of 36 stars in March 2003 to investigate the evolution of the grain properties in circumstellar disks. Our sample consists of Herbig stars, T Tauri stars and Vega-like stars, some of which have recently been identified to be members of nearby (<100 pc) stellar associations. Silicate and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features are detected and the spatial resolution of TIMMI2 allowed to place upper limits on the spatial extent of the emission. We also obtained ISAAC L-band spectra of 4 well-studied disks. For the Herbig Be star HD 100546, we detect spatially extended PAH emission at 3.3 micron which corresponds to a source with radius 11 +/- 3 AU in this line.

We present the results of an adaptive optics (AO) imaging survey of the common associations of Tucana and Horologium, carried out at the ESO 3.6m telescope with the ADONIS/SHARPII system. Based on our observations of two dozen probable association members, HIP 1910 and HIP 108422 appear to have low-mass stellar companions, while HIP 6856 and GSC 8047-0232 have possible sub-stellar candidate companions. Astrometric measurements, performed in November 2000 and October 2001, indicate that HIP 1910 B likely is bound to its primary, but are inconclusive in the case of the candidate companion to HIP 6856. Additional observations are needed to confirm the HIP 6856 companionship as well as for HIP 108422 and GSC 8047-0232.

We report adaptive optics (AO) observations of the young and nearby association MBM 12 obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our main observational result is the discovery of six new binary systems, LkHa 264, E 0255+2018, RX J0255.4+2005, S18, MBM 12-10, RX J0255.3+1915, and the confirmation of HD 17332, already known as a binary. We also detected a possible quadruple system. It is composed of the close binary LkHa 263 AB (separation of 0.41 ''), of LkHα262 located 15.25 '' from LkHa 263 A, and of LkHa 263 C, located 4.1 '' from LkHα263 A. A preliminary study of the binary fraction suggests a binary excess in the MBM 12 association as compared to the field and IC 348. Because of the high binarity rate, previous estimations of spectral types and measurements of IR excesses for several candidate members of MBM 12 have to be revised. LkHα263 C is a nebulous object that we interpret as a disk oriented almost perfectly edge-on and seen in scattered light. This object has already been reported by Jayawardhana et al. (2002). Scattered light models allow us to estimate some of the structural parameters (i.e. inclination, diameter and to a lesser extent dust mass) of the circumstellar disk. We find an inclination of 89^o and a outer radius for the disk, 165 AU if the distance to MBM 12 is 275 pc. With the present data set, we do not attempt to re-assess the distance to MBM 12. We estimate however that the distance to the candidate member RX J0255.3+1915 is d > 175 pc.

We present new, high angular resolution images of HD 199143 in the Capricornus association, obtained with the adaptive optics system ADONIS+SHARPII at the ESO 3.6m Telescope of La Silla Observatory. HD 199143 and its neighbour star HD 358623 (separation 5'away) have previously been imaged with adaptive optics. For each star, a companion has been detected in the J and K bands at respective separations of 1.1'' and 2.2'' (Jayawardhana & Brandeker 2001). Our new photometry of HD 199143 B suggests that it is a M2 star and that the presence of circumstellar dust proposed by Van den Ancker et al. (2000) is no longer necessary. We show that the 12 microns flux detected by IRAS previously interpreted as an IR excess, can be explained by the presence of the late-type companion.
