About the role

We are seeking a humble, enthusiastic and innovative Principal Engineer to join our team and lead on a programme of technology modernisation and engineering skills improvement.

The ideal candidate is eager to learn, works effectively with others, and has a proven track record in technical leadership, architecture, and modern engineering practices. You will drive technical excellence, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and guide our engineering teams in software craftsmanship and robust architecture design. As the most senior engineer in the organisation, you will be responsible for guiding technical decision making at the highest level whilst also capable of dropping down, whether pairing with engineers or a gnarly challenge or leading discovery investigations.

You will also be responsible for leading the tech lead community, driving adoption of engineering standards and principles and enabling effective decision making around the evaluation of technologies throughout their adoption lifecycle..

At present, our technology teams comprise over 20 engineers covering front-end, back-end, data and mobile (iOS) engineering. We presently use Python in a Google Cloud Platform environment.

About you

Technical leadership:

  • You will have experience leading engineering in a technical or architectural capacity for a system or service of significant size and complexity.

  • You will have worked with distributed architectures and cloud technologies and you are comfortable working with both front-end and back-end technologies, even if one of these domains is not your core expertise.

  • You are confident in your application design and architecture skills and have the right soft skills to facilitate effective and pragmatic technical decision making by engineers.

Coaching experience:

  • You’ll have experience developing the engineering expertise of engineers in adoption of modern engineering practices and principles through use of pairing, mobbing, community of practice, formal teaching and other methods.

Engineering Modernisation:

  • You’ll have experience working with legacy code and can show how you have applied various techniques to enable modernisation whilst delivering value to customers.

  • Expert in modern software development practices like TDD, CI/CD, and DevSecOps.

  • You’ll have a quality mindset and can demonstrate how you implement and uphold high standards throughout the software development lifecycle.

Technologies:

  • Whilst not essential, experience with Python and/or Typescript is desirable.

  • Google and AWS Cloud experience along with experience of serverless technologies is also desirable.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead on a programme of technology modernisation and engineering skills improvement.
  • Responsible for guiding technical decision making for the company
  • Hands on problem solving with the wider engineering team and leading discovery investigations
  • Leading the tech lead community, driving adoption of engineering standards and principles
  • Coaching team members using a variety of tried and tested methods
