About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in leading a transformation of the technology landscape and engineering culture as Artlogic moves into a new phase of growth. 

At present, our technology teams comprise over 20 engineers covering front-end, back-end, data and mobile (iOS) engineering. We presently use Python in a Google Cloud Platform environment.

About you

Essential

  • Leadership and management: Proven experience in a leadership role, demonstrating the ability to hire, motivate and inspire engineers to achieve their full potential and foster and further a culture of excellence through coaching and mentoring. You have a sound understanding of what makes an effective team, including a safe and inclusive environment, and can demonstrate how you've helped improve the performance of a team and transformed conflict into productive decision making.

  • Technical leadership: Strong technical background with full stack or back end engineering solutions, preferably within a large scale cloud based setting with solid engineering principles and modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, TDD and pair programming. You have a track record of helping teams make good technical decisions for complex problems and understanding the tradeoffs in that decision. You know what quality engineering looks like and how to cultivate that culture within your team.

  • Engineering culture change: Demonstrable experience of transforming the culture of delivery and engineering in a legacy environment introducing better ways of working and engineering practices for happier teams, happier teams and longer term commercial outcomes. leading the transformation of challenging legacy technology to modern engineering stack and practices with a focus on sustainable and predictable delivery, rapid feedback and reliable services.

  • Effective planning and execution: Working alongside a product manager, taking responsibility to identify and prioritise engineering improvements alongside product development ensuring overall alignment to company objectives. 

  • Relationship building: With a clear, concise and flexible communication style you can show how you have built strong working relationships with team members and other stakeholders, building trust, influencing and building a positive work environment.

  • Cross-functional working and agile delivery: You can show how you have formed highly effective partnerships with product managers, UX and principal engineers to ensure cross-functional team effectiveness. You will have solid experience working in a dual-track agile environment and can demonstrate how agile had a tangible impact on outcomes.

Desirable

  • Native mobile experience: Experience with managing native mobile (iOS) engineers.

  • SaaS experience: Experience working on a SaaS product with an appreciation for the challenges unique to that product domain and how they impact engineering decisions. 

Key responsibilities

  • Take direct responsibility for around 5-8 engineers in one or maybe two adjacent teams, fostering a culture of quality engineering and DevSecOps. You will champion the practices and principles of software craftsmanship such as TDD, clean code and pair programming. You will also cultivate a customer centric mindset in engineers and empower them to influence the direction of the product.

  • Be accountable for the success of your team using agile techniques to plan, estimate and assess risk of the work they will do, driving more frequent and predictable delivery, reducing support and incident frequency as well as improving overall team effectiveness.

  • Draw on your technical experience to understand the technology your team owns, as well as facilitate and critically appraise technical decisions as required.

  • Be responsible for the development of your team, through coaching and mentoring, supported by timely and compassionate but direct feedback.

  • Work closely with a Product Manager and be responsible for outlining, prioritising and advocating for the most impactful engineering improvements and communicating with stakeholders.
