Volunteering with Alberta Health Services (AHS) is a unique opportunity to support Patient and Family Centred Care.

AHS volunteers are individuals looking for a rewarding opportunity to share not only their time but provide meaningful support to patients and their families through a variety of roles.  Volunteers are a vital link in the important work of Alberta Health Services.

What is the Role of the Volunteer?

Accessing health care can often be an overwhelming and stressful experience.  Volunteers provide assistance to patients and their families in a variety of roles throughout a patient’s healthcare journey.  The majority of roles include direct patient support, requiring volunteers to be non-judgmental and adhere to AHS’s confidentiality standards.

Mission Statement

Are you interested in volunteering at the Canmore Hospital or for the Banff Community?

Alberta Health Services wants to engage community members and invites them to join the team in a meaningful way; through volunteering.

Canmore General Hospital and Banff Community volunteers extend and enhance the work of paid personnel in meeting the organization's goals for patients and their families through endorsed or sponsored programs and services.

What types of positions are available to volunteers?

  • Long Term Care: Volunteers assist the recreation staff in running fun, therapeutic programs. If you are energetic, outgoing, a self-starter, enjoy games, and can easily communicate in the English language, this may be an area of interest for you.  Volunteering on Long Term care is a great way to experience patient care and practice bedside manner alongside listening skills.
  • Acute Care: Volunteers visit patients, offer comforts like water, tea, warm blankets, someone to play a card game with or read a book, take the patient for a walk, and they also assist the nursing staff with supportive errands.  This is a great way to get acquainted with the workings of a hospital and practice bedside manner.
  • Community Care: There are many roles that volunteers support in the community with our health care programs.  The Adult Day Program (ADP) is a recreation therapy program focused on seniors with specific health care needs (such as dementia). Volunteers encourage participants to socialize and engage in the activities.
We also have volunteers visiting seniors at the Bow River Lodge and in their homes as part of our Friendly Visiting program.  These seniors are often isolated and don’t have much family in town, or perhaps they are in need of some extra attention as they have a lot of energy and need someone to walk and talk with.
  • Banff Community: There are a variety of role available in the Banff Community. These roles include Public Health Flu / COVID19 Vaccination Clinics, Home Care Mountain Connections (volunteers visiting isolated community members), and Driving support for medical appointments.
  • Hospital: Our Hospital gardens are completely maintained by a group of volunteers.  Volunteers should have some knowledge of gardening and be able to take direction well.  Must be physically able to dig, bend, and work on your knees.  Weeding is one of the main duties of the volunteer gardeners.
Volunteer Resources and the Unit Clerks utilize volunteer assistance in the office for tasks like filing and data entry; great options if you want to get some office experience.
The Hospital Tuck Shop is run by volunteers and we are always looking for new team members. Funds from the Tuck Shop go towards local health care.  Volunteers often get to meet patients and their families while volunteering in the Tuck Shop, so it is vital that volunteers be sociable. This volunteer role helps people gain experience in a simplified retail setting.

There are many other events and roles available to volunteers.  Please contact Volunteer Resources to discuss your interests and discover what role might work best for you.
