Oklahomans Against Puppy Mill Purveyors

On Monday, August 17, Oklahoma Alliance for Animals discovered that Petland, a retail store notorious for selling sick and dying puppies from puppy mills had been granted a building permit in the city of Tulsa near 71st and Highway 169. 

While the building permit has been approved and alterations to the site have begun, there is something that can be done to stop them. Our Mayor G.T. Bynum and Tulsa City Councilors can pass an emergency city ordinance banning the retail sales of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats in the city of Tulsa. 

The state of Oklahoma and Tulsa have a major pet overpopulation crisis, and thousands of dogs and cats are euthanized across the state in over-stuffed shelters every year. The last thing Tulsa and the surrounding area needs is a pipeline of un-healthy un-sterilized animals flooding the city. 

While Petland claims their dogs come from “licensed breeders,” we encourage you to remember the 84 puppy mill survivors we recently rescued from Sequoyah County. That breeder was licensed by the state, yet, she was charged with 84 counts of animal cruelty, and the dogs we rescued were in some of the worst states of neglect we’ve ever seen. 

WE NEED YOUR HELP

  • First, please sign this petition to show our Tulsa mayor and city councilors we are serious about stopping this puppy mill dog purveyor.
  • Second, email your city councilor (find their contact information here) and ask that they pass an emergency city ordinance banning the retail sales of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats in the city of Tulsa. You can use the text directly from our petition for your email. Just copy and paste! 
  • Third, spread the word to animal lovers across Tulsa and the metro area.

#GivingTuesdayNow: Double Your Donation!

You may have heard of #GivingTuesday, which occurs in December following Cyber Monday. This year, we will also celebrate #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving in response to the impact COVID-19 has had on organizations and nonprofits across the globe – including Oklahoma Alliance for Animals. #GivingTuesdayNow is Tuesday, May 5, 2020. 

To encourage participation on this day, while observing public health guidelines, we will be

  • Encouraging our supporters and volunteers to share pet parent “unselfies” – pictures of themselves with their furry friends – with a reason they support Oklahoma Alliance for Animals and our mission on their social media channels.
  • Sharing stories of how Oklahoma Alliance for Animals has positively impacted pets and pet parents before and during the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Asking all of our generous donors to contribute financially – big or small – to Oklahoma Alliance for Animals. Thanks to a “Double Dog Dare” matching grant, all donations up to $2,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. Our overall goal is to raise $10,000. 

We look forward to seeing how our community rises to this occasion to support our mission of reducing pet overpopulation across our state, encouraging responsible pet ownership and promoting the humane treatment of animals through community collaboration and education.

In times like these, let’s remember that the chaos and uncertainty will pass. Until then, we remain united in courage and hope for animals across our state.
