I’m a rancher who has carried this tool for 46 months, using it multiple times a day, until it broke.The good: heavy duty; good grip with pliers; reversible screw heads never lost their shape.The bad: scissors became problematic early on due to a dysfunction with the spring in the handle; the wire clipper in the jaws of the pliers lost it’s effectiveness after a few months (I could have bought replacement blades but never did); the knife blade dulled with use, but responded well to sharpening; pliers broke while trying to straighten some 9 gauge fence wire.

This is a lunker. It's got heft. It has the tools you want and if you threw it at somebody they would be seriously injured.

My old Leatherman Wingman served me well for many years but I decided it was time for an upgrade, and the Surge seemed obvious. The black looks sharp, it has all the tools, and dang is it sturdy.

I do recommend snagging a pocket clip for it. Get the official Leatherman one. I tried the Donk brand one and it did not fit and almost bricked a few of my tools.

I like having separate strait/serrated blades as opposed to a combo. I really like the interchangeable bits. I keep a couple kits in the sheath and it has come in handy. All of this comes at a price; its big and heavy. Not great for EDC but worth keeping in the truck.

This tool is so much fun. It has a vast set of high quality tools that always come in handy. I got this tool because I kept finding myself in scenarios in which someone would need a tool and I would think “man, I wish I could just whip out that tool and look like a cool, prepared, handy guy”, and now I get to look like a cool, handy guy quite frequently. I’ve gotten to cut the tags off of shirts on demand, unscrewed screws right after someone someone declared that they were going to go inside to get a screwdriver, cut open boxes while friends were digging in their drawers for keys. It’s great. Everyone thinks I am so handy.

I really recommend this particular model because it comes with an awl. Every now and then you need a tiny little pointy thing and the awl really does the trick. The best part is you can say something like “Oh, don’t worry, I have an awl” and you just know the whole room is saying “what the heck is an awl? This guy must really know his way around tools”. This absolute flex is 100% worth the extra $30 compared to the Wave Plus. There’s also other stuff that the $30 gets you. It’s bigger and heavier which is nice. Really sells the whole rugged no-nonsense tool vibe I’m going for. I’m also kind of poor do the fact that it’s heavy let’s me know immediately if it were to fall off my belt and really helps ease my mind. Pound for pound my favorite possession.
Two drawbacks, though. The first is the stiffness, which many people have commented on. Once you open it, you’ll be like “oh man, how does this close? Is there a button?” Nope. Just force it closed. I know it feels like you are about to break it, but that just means it’s working. The problem goes away with time. I have been opening and closing this tool while I watch TV and after a few hundred opens its super smooth. The second down side is the black finish. It isn’t very good at staying on, which is a shame because the black is super sleek. The fact that so much of it has peeled away is not all bad, though, because it makes it look like I’ve used it for a long time which helps sell the aesthetic that I bought it for.
Once again, I highly recommend this tool; it’s a total flex.

Was surprised at the quality. I thought it would feel somewhat lacking because of the multifaceted nature inherent in its’ design, however she feels solid as solid can be. Don’t listen to the naysayers who prattle endlessly about “right tools for the right job” and “it’ll work in a pinch”. Speaking as a mechanic; this thing won’t take apart a car but she is the right tool, fool. . . Not sure where I was going with that but . . . Yea. Surge is a beast and king for a reason.

Also the scissors DO have a spring so don’t listen to the guy in the video. He literally touched it.

And to the review that said it was too heavy and expensive . . . Buy a cheaper lighter model. Wow.

Any serious hobbyist would agree with the fact that this is one of the best pocket multitool out there. I ordered the black oxide coated surge. This specific surge needs to be washed with a brush and soap to get rid of the excess black oxide. Your hands will get messy if you dont do that. Then wash it down with some WD-40 to get rid of all the water from the joints. Apply some grease, but that is optional. The interchangeable blades are awesome. Also, it has got some weight to it which i really like to be honest. Rest assured this Leatherman surge is a beast and you cannot possibly go wrong with it.
