La Voz De M.A.Y.O: TATA RAMBO is based on the oral history of Ramon Jaurigue, an orphan and WWII veteran who co-founded the Mexican, American, Yaqui, and Others (M.A.Y.O.) organization, which successfully lobbied the Tucson City Council to improve living and working conditions for members of the Pascua Yaqui tribe. Thanks to this period of activism, the Yaquis were federally recognized as one of the remaining Native American tribes. Meanwhile Ramon's home life suffered as his focus was pulled from family to wider community, and from domesticity to the adrenaline of the campaign.

A resonant, neglected slice of American history is told for the first time with art by
J. GONZO, letter art by BERNARDO BRICE, edited by CLAIRE NAPIER, and LA VOZ DE M.A.Y.O boasts a script by HENRY BARAJAS the great-grandson of Ramon Jaurigue, a.k.a. Tata Rambo.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Barajas' 'Tata Rambo' shows us via his story that family is truly what gives Latinx superpower.” ―Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, La Borinqueña, Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico

"Barajas' heartfelt paean shows the value of shining a light on lesser known fighters for social justice." -
Booklist

“Unlike Marvel superheroes fighting villains, Barajas wants this comic book series to be more about documenting Latino and Arizona history―which he feels has its own superpower.” ―
NPR’s KJZZ Phoenix, Arizona

"In La Voz De M.A.Y.O: TATA RAMBO Gonzo's trademark alert, vibrant and kinetic visual storytelling skills powerfully place us in Ramon's consciousness and world." ―
Frederick Luis Aldama, Latinx Superheroes, Tales From la Vida: A Latinx Comics Anthology

“Henry Barajas’ powerful true story blends perfectly with J. Gonzo’s stunning art and electric colors making La Voz De M.A.Y.O. TATA Rambo a powerful and compelling graphic biography.” ―
Terence Dollard, host of PBS' Comic Culture

This is a great graphic novel, excellent true story that is well researched and beautifully told my Mr. Barajas. The art is not what I would personally like by itself but it fits the story well. The layouts and design in the panels is very well done - the artist is an excellent storyteller as well and pairs well with the writer. Great job guys!

What I loved about this book is the way Barajas waded into his great-grandfather's history with honesty, transparency, and humanity. It's a model of how to do history that's close to your heart. He didn't pull punches in pointing out that the hero of the story was a flawed human being--a flawed human being that still worked for change and for a better America. The art is fantastic and perfectly matched to the content. The influence of Maus and March can be seen, but the work is wholly its own.

This is an enjoyable read that makes history come alive; especially a part of history that, I'll admit, I didn't know much about. The author makes the story relatable but also provides great historical context.

This is a perfect book. It captures a generational struggle in a way that is at once poetic, heartbreaking, and beautiful. This should be part of any school’s curriculum.
