Love drinking rotten scum? Poor battery life? Excessive-mug-anxiety? This mug is for you!

Love drinking rotten scum? Poor battery life? Excessive-mug-anxiety? This mug is for you!
I'm one of those people that cannot STAND drinking even "kinda hot" coffee or tea. I'm also not a fast drinker. So, it's a constant microwave-drink-microwave-drink situation. As a teacher, I found that my drinks would get cold long before they were even a fourth of the way gone. And TEACHER NEEDS HER COFFEE/TEA. :D I'd used various mug warmers with special mugs to transmit heat, and they're not great. There's always a thick skin that forms on top, some of them make your drink so hot it burns, or it's still not hot enough. And you've also then got this hot burner plate on your desk. And, you have to have the plate everywhere you go (so, car/classroom/various house places are obviously not an option). Travel mugs, even the expensive Yetis and etc are OK. But they really still don't keep it hot enough, long enough. And I can't microwave them. THEN, there is the fact that I like a decent amount of half-and-half or table cream in my drinks... which at times cools my drinks down so much I have to heat them back up right away. Or, I've tried heating up the half and half/cream first. So freaking fussy and annoying.I discovered heated mugs, and I was very excited for my first purchase. I did a lot of review reading and analyzing what was most important to me before I purchased. In the end, I went with this Ember travel mug (purchased September 2021).The base has worked just fine. It heats it exactly to the temp that I want. However, the battery life is SO POOR that even when I have it on the charger (wall or car) it only keeps my drink hot for a max of about 3 hours. That's ON the charger. PS: I like my drinks at around 139-141 depending on the drink. Anyway. Really poor battery life, but, again, I've just been so incredibly happy to have a hot drink until I'm done drinking.Enter the LID for this mug. You cannot take it apart, you cannot clean out the interior. AT ALL. A little bit ago I noticed that it seemed like there was some "stuff" inside the tiny hole underneath (tiny meaning probably 1/4 of an inch, tops). When you push the top of the lid up and down to open and close, there's some little plastic parts inside underneath you can see flip back and forth. And inside there, there's all this room for.... MOLDY stuff.I'm not one of those people constantly leaving my old coffee in there for days. I can't say I've never done it, but this mug is so expensive that I've been ridiculously good about it. I clean it every day and put it up on the charger to charge until the next morning. Regardless, there it was --- pale brown stuff inside there. There was no way to clean it. I started wondering if it was really moldy old cream, and I was drinking all my drinks through that moldy crap.... and it was really grossing me out... So. I really got looking and knew that I was right about the gunk in there. First, I soaked it in a solution of very hot water with a little dish soap and a drop of bleach. Soaked overnight, then tried tapping the lid on the side of the sink. A few gross pieces came out - enough to corroborate my theory, totally gross me out, and show me that there was even MORE inside there that I couldn't get out. I tried using a pipe cleaner to gently swipe inside, nothing would come out - and this tiny tiny little plastic door thing then broke and the mug wouldn't push open and close. UGH. So, I realized that with the lid already broken, AND full of 6 months of rotten molding drinks, I decided I'd just break the interior of the lid out. That way at least I could put the ring back on and be able to still use the mug. (the rim of the mug without the lid at all is not really functional as a drinking cup). So, I got out my clippers and started the lid demolition. It took a fair bit of strength, time, clipping, and cursing for the stuff in side to come out. Then I got a few photos for you all to see what I'm talking about. GROSS. (*Side note, readers, my cup is NOT DEFECTIVE -- this is the way it is designed! If you use creamy drinks in your mug, it will happen to you!)So, now I have a very expensive mug without a lid. And, I am a big girl, I don't NEED a sippy cup. But it definitely reduces it's use outside of the home. Sad face.A few other issues: The travel charger is really inconvenient. No chargers are compatible with USB. You can only use their charger, even the car one (cigarette lighter end). The travel charger is challenging to have fit in most cup holders. The mug wants to kind of fall out and roll around while driving around corners, etc.Lastly, it's just plain really expensive for what you get. I've been incredibly happy having a hot drink for an hour, but seriously? It costs enough money that I'm always scared I'm going to drop it. Bang it. Crack it. It's like this "precious thing" ------- and I have a hard time managing my stuff as it is. I don't like the anxiety that comes with this. A $100 mug? I could likely deal. Even the travel charger is so much money, and such a PITA. The fit sucks, like I said, but you certainly can't use any other cups/etc in that cup holder while using the charger. So, I'm storing the travel charger in my car when it's not in use. And it was pricey enough, too, that I'm like, "Oh, jeez, crap, is that the cord hanging out?!" and etc. It's just another thing for me to stress about a kid stepping on, etc.I wouldn't purchase this mug again.

I wanted to like this mug, I really wanted this to be a great product... unfortunately my experiences with it have been lack luster and ultimately I'd recommend you spend less on something else. The Ember Travel Mug2 is sold at a premium price, however, it is NOT a premium product.

I bought my Travel Mug2 on February 12th 2021 (less than 2 months owning it at the time of this review). in that time I've discovered that the marketing on this product and the experience of actually owing it are in start contrast.

First let's talk about the battery life, their claim is that it will keep your hot beverage hot for 3 hours. I found this to be far from the truth.

Battery life claim: 3 hours
Actual: ~1.5 hours @ 140degrees

Ember's support confirms this experience is as expected, "With a set temp of 140 degrees, your Ember may have a slightly shorter battery life"

The next issue I had was finding that the mug would randomly turn off. The mug has an liquid sensing feature that detects if the mug is empty. The way it detects the liquid is through temperature differentials. If there isn't a significant enough delta between your coffee/tea and the desired temp set on your coffee then the mug will automatically turn off. so if you pour your coffee/tea into the mug and run out of the house there is a possibility that your mug may turn off and your coffee will be cold. It boggles my mind why they have not included an override for this so that an owner can turn the mug on and off manually so that they are in control and can be assured that the mug is indeed keeping their liquid at the desired temperature.

The last thing that I'll say is that after about a 2 months of owning this, the lid stopped functioning. The Travel Mug2 has a lid with a mechanical "plunger" that you push down to open and close. Press once it clicks open, press it again and the lid clicks shut. Unfortunately mine stopped opening, which is the straw that broke the camels back and is what prompted this review. I'm sure support will send me a new one, but that's beside the point. The fact that the lid broke after 2 months, the mug is very finicky and the battery life is roughly half of what they claim leads me to a point where I can say that this is a product that needs a lot more work. I personally would not buy it again nor can I recommend it to anyone. there are a lot of other cheaper heated travel mugs out there that you could buy 2-3 of knowing they will break before you get to spending $180.

If $180 is a drop in the bucket for your budget, then go for it. But for me, I viewed $180 as a luxury item I was buying myself. Keep in mind $180 is ~1/5th of what a new iPhone costs, 1/5th of the price of an item that has almost unlimited uses and brings immense value to my life. This mug has one job and it does it poorly.

I was always one who just made coffee and would drink it over about 2 hours. I could never instantly drink it straight from the Keurig or coffee pot, and always let it sit for 15 minutes or so before even touching it.
With the Ember I still let it sit, but I know that it will be the perfect temperature when I’m ready to drink it! I got this right after Christmas as a gift, and I haven’t had a cold sip of coffee since.

I have two, very small complaints - one with the mug design, and one with the app.

The mug itself is very easy to use. There is a power button on the bottom, and it also has a touch area to active the temp buttons, or to view the battery level. You just turn it on, and pour your hot drink in, and it will stay at your desired temperature for as long as you have battery.
The “default” temperature is 135F. So anything hotter than that will use the battery more, and obviously anything less will help the battery last longer. I keep mine around 130F and I can easily get over 2 hours with it. I usually finish mine around the 2ish hours mark, and I have battery to spare - guessing about another 30 minutes easily.
My only complain for the mug design is the charging coils on the bottom of the mug.
It states in the description that the mug is fully submersible - which is great. The charging dock that you charge the mug on, can NOT have any water on it. After my first time cleaning it, I noticed there were droplets of water stuck in where the coils are. I took some canned air and blew inside of them, and sure enough a decent amount of water came out. I may be over thinking this design, but I’m still concerned that the water stuck inside there would damage my charging dock. If Ember wanted to comment back so I know not to freak out, that would be great. ;)

Then my only other minor complaint is the app lay out. Unlike some users, I have had zero problems with the app! I was able to update my mug just fine. My request is that they display the battery level on the “Home” screen so you can see everything in one area. Or better yet, make an iPhone widget.

Anyway! That’s my review! I’ll update as needed if there are any issues later down the line.

My wife loves drinking tea, so I bought this for her for Christmas. Six days later, we're returning it. Why?

1. It's not an actual thermos. If you put hot water in a regular glass cup, you'll get the same level of thermal insulation. To test this, she put some tea in a regular thermos and some in the smart mug. An hour later, the smart mug's tea was cold and the thermos still kept it hot. This was with the power off.

None of this should be a problem if the mug keeps the liquid at the temperature you set it at when you turn it on, right? Correct, BUT IT WASN'T DOING THAT! Even while on and set at a specific temperature, it was dropping below. And since the insulation in the mug is terrible, it puts tremendous strain on the battery. Which leads me to point #2

2. The claimed three hour battery life. The battery was dying after an hour. Probably because since the insulation in the cup is so poor, the heater has to fight like the dickens right from the beginning to keep the liquid inside hot.

3. The amount of liquid it can hold. While it can hold a small mug's worth of liquid at 12 ounces, the reality is that since it's a travel mug and (supposedly) has a three hour battery life, it should hold enough liquid to make all of this worth-while. At an absolutely minimum, it should hold 16 oz, but I'd prefer 24 ounces. 24 ounces is enough space to last you a few hours. 12 ounces is what you can drink in one sitting.

But let's be honest: it wasn't able to keep 12 ounces hot. 24 ounces would probably be impossible with the technology they're using.

At the end of the day, the idea is great but the execution in many ways is poor. Save your money and just buy a good thermos!

[REVIEW REMARKS]

There is no doubt in my mind that this is a high-end product. However, the elephant in the room is the $249.99 price tag (at the time of ordering). Price/value is always subjective, so I am not going to dwell on this. I love coffee and the idea of maintaining a constant temperature, is appealing. I can only think of a couple of scenarios that this would be required, and most of the scenarios are not pressing. With that said, I would like to discuss what I like/love about this mug.

The look and feel of this mug is modern and sleek. The matte black finish really compliments the modern technology found within. The LED interface is really cool and I like that it displays your temperature (current) and you can change the temperature, up and down using touch based controls. The menu is accessed through touching the "EMBER" logo on the side. This makes it easy to access the menu, but also really easy to change the temperature unwittingly. This is addressable in the APP under 'Temperature Lock', activating this feature prevents the touch display changing the temperature. I like the listed battery life and the personalized message you can set in the APP. Both displayed in legible LED dots.

The mug pairs with the Ember APP found in the APP stores (IOS and ANDROID) I use Android and the download was quick and you need to create an account for the APP. The APP allows you to pair other Ember devices, should you have them. I like this. The APP also allows you to set the temperature, change between ℃ and ℉ as the unit of measurement, personalize the mug (I LOVE THIS), and access pre-sets for different temperatures for various drinks. The APP is slow at the beginning, it does not register touches after buttons are pressed. I can only assume it is processing the request with the mug?? At any rate, be patient.

The charging plate is handy, it makes the mug easy to recharge. It does not make this overly portable. I feel that the battery life will address this issue. If the battery is long lasting, then we are not going to have an issue. The mug has been using the initial charge and I have not used the charging plate since using it the first charge. The battery life is impressive, especially when you turn off the mug when not required.

The only design issue I have with the mug is the lid. It is plastic and it has a spring loaded plunger as the lock. If it were not plastic, and it was something a little more durable, it would add to the value of the mug, from my perspective. I am hoping that these lids are provided by the company, if it fails or stops performing.

All in all, this is a very technology rich mug and it makes my inner geek smile ear-to-ear. I love the concept of this mug and I like that it works really well. The size is perfect for Americano coffees and it keeps the coffee at optimal drinking temperature. I would like to see how this performs in the colder weather. The outer shell is slick, exercise caution while holding it. I do not think it would like being dropped. I LOVE the personalization. My concern is if this mug is locked to my account, can it be paired to another phone? If the mug is lost and someone finds it, can they used it? If it locks to the account, that is a feature that protects the users from theft.

Recommended to the coffee enthusiasts who demand only the most optimal temperature to drink their coffee. This recommendation omits price point and value (both subjective) and basis this recommendation on quality, modern design, tech rich application, use cases, ability to keep hot coffee hot (not intended to warm beverages - outside the scope of the mug), ease of use and aftercare is not difficult. Excellent product, with only minor improvements required in the APP.

In the event that experiences change or evolve, updates may be made to this review to address such developments.

Disappointed buyer
1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing product quality

While the product worked fine in the beginning, the "buttons" on the mug were clunky but worked after some touches. Not one year old, the mug seems to charge still, but the buttons are not lighting up anymore. Very disappointing as the mug was a pretty expensive gift for not working anymore within a year's use. Reached out to the manufacturer and no response. Disappointing.

This is my first item from Ember. I used it for several weeks every day at work to get a feel for it and here is my experience:

Prior to receiving this I felt like it was a really expensive investment for keeping your magical black bean juice hot while mobile.

On the other hand keeping my Java hot while mobile was a challenge. I had resorted to having multiple coffee warmers in different rooms at home and my office at work just to keep it hot because I have yet to find an insulated mug that keeps it truly hot for any length of time.

Once I received it I unpackaged it and I have to say the matte black finish and simple minimalist design is really really sleek and I love it way more than I ever expected.

The shape of the tumbler is graduated which makes it much easier for petite hands like mine to keep a solid grasp on it so kudos to Ember for that.

Once I read the manual I washed it and put it on for its first charge. That’s when the battery display lit up and I had my first glimpse of the pixelated front display.

I don’t know why (maybe because I grew up in the 80s lol) but the pixel display is just awesome and I’ll be honest, I spent more than a few minutes tapping the Ember logo to scroll thru the options because I just loved seeing it.

Add in the tactile audio when adjusting the temperature and I almost wonder if this was made for people like me who have SPD (sensory processing disorder) because I love it from texture to sound.

Despite loving the look and feel of this mug I was a bit biased and prepared to not be overly impressed because it is a cordless mug to keep your drink hot. Sounds so simple.

However once I started using it I quickly changed my stance. I really like being able to see the current temperature of the drink when I pour it in because then I know what temperature to set it to relative to that.

If it’s straight out of my espresso machine then it’s piping hot and I set it to maintain the temperature.

If it’s a take-put coffee I ordered and I am transferring it to my mug then I usually set the mug for a higher temp and it heats it up for me fairly quickly (note: the coffee is hot but usually has cooled a bit by the time I reach the office and transfer it so it’s going from almost hot to piping hot.)

I like that the mug lets you know when it needs charging via the display.

I find it lasts around the 4 hr mark with a full charge but it also depends on what temperature I have it set to.

Now that I have been using this daily fro several weeks I find myself really enjoying it and relishing that I can have hot coffee at my work bench in the shop as well as my office and in our HQ when I need to got there.

I have seen other reviews stating that it doesn’t last much longer than a year or two and I am really hoping with tender loving care that this mug lasts longer than that because I have grown to love it.

If it does stop working after a few years (or sooner) I would be in a pickle because I don’t know that I could buy another one but I am pretty spoiled by it now and will really mourn the loss of my hot coffee tumbler.

My hope is that once this has been out on the market longer that the price will come down a bit in case it does stop working sooner than later

One disappointment is that the car charger isn’t included despite the product page showing photos of it and implying it is. I travel extensively around the region by vehicle and most of the places I go are in the remote area of Northern Ontario and so do not have any coffee shops or drive thru. Being able to make coffee at home and keep it hot for hours while I travel would be glorious.

The next disappointment is that I went to the Ember home page on Amazon to see if I could order it and what the price was..but it isn’t there. There is a half listing of some sort for it (technical glitch?) but if you click on it nothing happens and a search of Amazon proved fruitless. I felt like they dangled the carrot and then took it away.

For the $312 price point I feel that the travel accessory should be included so I deducted one star for that. Ember if you are reading this PLEASE bring back the travel charger or consider adding it to the mug.

Overall this cup won me over and I sincerely hope it lasts a long time. If you are a serious Java or tea aficionado with cash to spare then I would recommend this. 👍🏻👍🏻

3.0 out of 5 stars Average travel mug, poor insulation capability, ~2.12 hr @59°C, touch control, rubbish app, pricey

This is an average (or below average if you take into account how much this thing costs) travel mug that's fairly well-made for the main body (but the plastic lid is just atrocious in my eyes) but it works poorly as a TRAVEL mug due to its poor insulation capability; however, it works just fine as an ordinary mug without issues if it's in the charging coaster all day or at least most of the time.

≡ Physical build
The physical build quality is fairly decent for the travel mug itself with the usual powder coating typically seen for most other travel mugs nowadays and it does have certain heft to it (i.e. batteries and all that) which is nice. Unfortunately, the same thing can't be said for the plastic lid which I just find to be out of place and doesn't necessarily belong; it has the same look and feel of $20 mug that I've seen so many floating around here.

≡ Performance
So how does it perform? Well, that really depends on your individual case and how this will be used. As a TRAVEL mug, its performance is below average and far below my expectations due to its poor insulation capability in comparison to most other thermo mugs out there including those that are a fraction (a fifth to sixth) of the cost of this, and its overall poor battery life (which to a certain degree is negatively impacted by its insulation capability).

As a travel mug (remember the operative word here is travel), it's imperative to me that it's able to keep my hot drink hot for the duration of the travel when I'm on the go, typically from 2 to 4 hours depending on the time of the day or the day of the week; you know the drill. I started by filing the travel mug with coffee at exactly 69°C (10°C above my preferred temperature) and off I went. It's able to maintain the temperature at around 62°C for about 2hr 7min before the battery died which isn't exactly great mind you (btw, that's roughly 71% of the advertised battery runtime).

The temperature of the coffee dropped to a lukewarm 43°C an hour after the battery ran out. Seriously, I have many $20 travel mugs that outperform this with respect to insulation capability; it's simply not capable of keeping the hot drink HOT without the battery and that's just unacceptable for something as premium as this.

On the flip side, it does work fairly well if it's mostly sitting in the coaster but then again if that's what this travel mug is god for, I might as well just get a mug instead, from Ember or otherwise.

≡ Features
With that being said, I do appreciate the ability to change the temperature without the app and it is indeed a neat future and works reasonably well coupled with the ability to see the temp in real-time etc. Though, accidental activation of the touch control can be annoying at times.

Speaking of the app, it's also poorly designed and a 3-star rating shows that; many times it'd freeze and stop responding and other times it seemed sluggish and unresponsive when navigating around the options etc. I'm not sure what it was but I had no intention of figuring out since I'm not particularly interested in yet another app on my phone.

Btw, it can be used to heat up cold (10°C) drinks but it took about 50 min to bring it up to around 47°C or so before the battery ran out. As such, this is only meant to keep the drinks hot and not necessarily heating anything up.

≡ Value
All things considered, this is an average travel mug that does NOT meet my expectation for what it claims to do (i.e. as a TRAVEL mug); however, it may or may not work for you depending you're your individual situation and use case so I'll just leave it at that. It's pricey at $200 for what it doesn't provide for me and its overall build quality, features, usability, and performance. Your mileage might vary.
