NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An unprecedented look into the personal and creative life of the visionary auteur David Lynch, through his own words and those of his closest colleagues, friends, and family

“Insightful . . . an impressively industrious and comprehensive account of Lynch’s career.”—The New York Times Book Review

In this unique hybrid of biography and memoir, David Lynch opens up for the first time about a life lived in pursuit of his singular vision, and the many heartaches and struggles he’s faced to bring his unorthodox projects to fruition. Lynch’s lyrical, intimate, and unfiltered personal reflections riff off biographical sections written by close collaborator Kristine McKenna and based on more than one hundred new interviews with surprisingly candid ex-wives, family members, actors, agents, musicians, and colleagues in various fields who all have their own takes on what happened.

Room to Dream is a landmark book that offers a onetime all-access pass into the life and mind of one of our most enigmatic and utterly original living artists.

With insights into . . .
Eraserhead
The Elephant Man
Dune
Blue Velvet
Wild at Heart
Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Lost Highway
The Straight Story
Mulholland Drive
INLAND EMPIRE
Twin Peaks: The Return

Praise for Room to Dream

“A memorable portrait of one of cinema’s great auteurs . . . provides a remarkable insight into [David] Lynch’s intense commitment to the ‘art life.’ ”The Guardian

“This is the best book by and about a movie director since Elia Kazan’s
A Life (1988) and Michael Powell’s A Life in Movies (1986). But Room to Dream is more enchanting or appealing than those classics. . . . What makes this book endearing is its chatty, calm account of how genius in America can be a matter-of-fact defiance of reality that won’t alarm your dog or save mankind. It’s the only way to dream in so disturbed a country.”San Francisco Chronicle

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of June 2018: With his aversions to linear storytelling and explanations of his often inscrutable films, a straightforward autobiography was probably never in the cards for iconoclast director and magnificent weirdo David Lynch. That’s why the call-and-response construction of Room to Dream is ingenious. For this hybrid biography/memoir, critic-journalist (and longtime Lynch friend) Kristine McKenna tackled the just-the-facts biographical bits, very standardly organized in chapters describing pivotal periods of Lynch’s life and career: childhood, art school, the making of Elephant Man, etc. Lynch read McKenna’s pieces and presented his own recollections in reply. Like his films, his memories are unconstrained by narrative, often dropping into peculiar moments that would appear later in his work, whether it’s a shocking moment from Blue Velvet or a seemingly inscrutable clue from Twin Peaks. Lynch’s singular voice and stream-of-consciousness style are transmitted faithfully to the page, and a reader might imagine Lynch dictating his comments from a dark basement studio, speaking into a vintage chrome microphone. For fans, this is damn fine reading. —Jon Foro, Amazon Book Review

This is a really cool little book. The format is fresh and innovative. There have been some really mind blowing passages from Lynch himself but beyond that it's a fairly standard biography. In some ways it must be difficult to write a deep biography about someone knowing 1. they have final say over what you write and 2. in the next chapter they can disagree, correct, or embellish what you just wrote. I liked reading about David's early life, but was surprised at his treatment of his romantic partners. All in all, an enjoyable read.

Well written and the perfect format for a Lynch bio. You have each chapter in his life split between the biographer's well researched and straight forward telling, and then you get Lynch's subject, off the cuff (it reads like he just sat down and spoke into a tape recorder) version of the same period. He goes off on any number of interesting and funny tangents and it all just works. I honestly can't recall ever reading a more interesting and engaging biography of anyone.

It's got just enough B&W photos sprinkled throughout to augment the text and it feels like the biographer literally talked to everyone Lynch ever knew or worked with (and if they were not alive then she talked to someone close to them).

Everything you didn't know you wanted to know about David Lynch, his life, art and films. This is a fascinating and enlightening book. It helps of course if you're familiar with his movies (and his music) but even if you're not you should get a lot out of this read. You may come out the other side of this book a different person (and I'm only half-joking about that). Worst case, only your doppelganger will come out. ;)
My love for and appreciation of his work have deepened, thanks to this reading experience. Kristine McKenna has a clear and engaging voice, and Lynch's chapters are --what else?-- Lynchian.
This is a wonderful book. I could say a lot more but this woodsman's at my door asking, "Gotta light?"

Inventive structural concept in combining a biography/autobiography. Unfortunately, for me, it stayed a little too much on the surface of things. Would have liked more technical, behind-the-scenes info regarding how Lynch explores his creative processes as well as more discussion regarding the dichotomy of his TM work and the darkness of his art/films. I found LYNCH ON LYNCH a more engaging and informative book but this is still interesting in terms of the opinions of those who have been close to and who've worked with Lynch.

The format of the book - alternating biography, autobiography/Lynch's commentary - works well. I liked the first 2/3 the best and most interesting, the last 1/3 got a little repetitive and "more of the same", but by no means a bad book. If you like David Lynch then read this!

Don't miss this book if you're a David Lynch fan. Better yet, listen to the audio version in his own voice. There's only one David Lynch. I love listening to his unique delivery. This autobiography and biography, half and half. Interesting format.

Originality. Used to greatly enhance my knowledge of the subject and appreciation of the writers talent. Also gave audiobooks version as a birthday gift. It too was very highly thought of. Ms. McKenna's well modulated reading is clear, concise and utterly bereft of the Umms, Aahhs and Youknows so pervasive in spoken word formats (radio. T.V. Public Speakers etc) heard today. Brava!

Having seen Eraserhead in a college theater many years ago (circa 1979.) I have been an avid fan of his film, music and art. The biography/autobiography provides a beautiful peek into DKL's creative process. While Ms. McKenna provides scholarly information about the artist's life, Mr. Lynch's approach is more like a conversation he is having with his reader.

Mr. Lynch is truly a National Treasure and the art world is a better place with his presence and work. "Everyone have a great day.."

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2021
I loved reading this book about David Lynch, particularly given the unusual format. Each chapter is written by the author and the following chapter by Lynch, dealing with the same content but in his own words. It's a very interesting way to not only understand the man better, but to get a feel for the events of his life, both from outside and within the individual themselves.

I was already a Lynch fan (of course I was, otherwise why bother reading a large autobiography on him, right? lol) and though it does tend to focus more on the positives whilst brushing past the more problematic parts of his personality, I felt like I was saying goodbye to a great friend as I finished the last page.

If you are intrigued by his work, be it TV, film, painting or music, there's a lot to love within these pages. I highly recommend giving it a go: it's addictive and inspiring stuff!
