Succession started out as a slow burn, which gradually ignited into a sharp, brilliant television series. I couldn't leave it alone and watched it over a few evenings recently. It portrays the Roy family, who own a media empire and are portrayed as a bunch of completely dysfunctional human beings in terror of their father Logan. The cast did an excellent job of portraying themselves as spoiled, horrible, over-privileged, unlikeable people. I loathed just about everyone, except perhaps Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) and Greg (Nicholas Braun). Matthew Macfadyen is brilliant as Tom, Logan's weak, highly strung son-in-law, while Kieran Culkin has the sharpest (nastiest) lines as Roman Roy, while playing a truly crazed character. Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) play the two most interesting siblings as they fight for their father's approval, competing to become the next boss of the media empire, Waystar Royco, while the fourth sibling, deluded Connor (Alan Ruck), has decided that, though he has never held a job, he's going to run for President. Brian Cox does a great job as Logan Roy and manages to come across as a truly horrible human being who manipulates his family as though he's an evil puppet master. This is a brilliant series, not to be missed.
