About the Author

Mượn Thị Văn loves to read books of all shapes and sizes. She first began reading yellow-spined hardbacks about a certain girl detective before graduating to longer novels and then picture books (it’s true, she doesn’t remember reading picture books as a young child). So few books reflected her formative experiences, though, that she desired to bring new and different stories into the world.

From her New York Times acclaimed debut, In a Village by the Sea, illustrated by April Chu, Mượn's books have received many distinctions, including a Northern California Book Award, a Golden Kite Award, a New York Public Library Best Book, a Kirkus Reviews Best Book, a Junior Library Guild Selection, and an Irma Black Honor Award.

When she's not writing, Mượn likes to roam the forests of California with her family. Visit her online at www.muonthivan.com.

What a brilliant, beautiful, quietly powerful and moving picture book. This is the story of a family leaving home and enduring a difficult journey, in search of something better. It is absolutely wonderful, with astoundingly gorgeous artwork. I’ll be reading this book both by myself and with my little one for years to come.

A beautiful Story, profound in its simplicity. Seventy-five words of heart-wrenching and soul-stirring wonder. Beautifully illustrated and tenderly rendered. A book that transcends time and should be part of every child's collection.

In just 75 words, this author managed to capture the feeling of leaving home as a refugee in simple but powerful terms. Appropriate for children of all ages.

Great book, but it came with without it’s cover sleeve

Picture books about personally and politically fraught topics like immigration often outsource their impact to an overtly moralizing storyline. This lyrical representation of a family's boat migration is comparatively so much more powerful because it respects kids and parents/teachers enough to allow them to infer the story. A must-read for my upper elementary students.

Inspired by actual events in Mượn Thị Văn’s life, Wishes looks at secret escapes through a different lens. The author packs this emotional story into only 75 words, and yet encapsulates so much more. (Back matter includes more on Muon’s own journey from Vietnam to the United States.)

"The night wished it was quieter.
The bag wished it was deeper.
The light wished it was brighter…"

Victo Ngai’s powerful illustrations are the perfect match for the lyrical text. The bold use of color, texture and perspective are as beautiful as they are haunting.

Wishes is a quiet, contemplative book that young — and old — readers will want to read again and again.

Wow, what a moving book— the understated, metaphorical text paired with illustrations that are at once graphic, and fanciful—

Another addition to any list of the incredible books about immigration that have been coming out over the past few years. This one is right up there, for me, with the wordless picturebook [book:The Arrival|920607], by Shaun Tan.

This tells a heartbreaking story in a way that makes sense for children. Readers of every age will truly enjoy this though. I have limited bookshelf space so I don't buy a book unless I absolutely adore it. This is one of those few. Made me sad, tearful, and yet, a bit inspired and hopeful for humankind.
