A summer getaway triggers a psychological game of cat and mouse in a novel about the frightening damages of love, family, and obsession by the bestselling author of Open House and We Were Mothers.

When Georgia rents her country home for the month of August, it’s off to the relaxing Connecticut shore for her; her husband, Tom; and their young daughter. It’s just what they need to ease family tensions and reconnect. All that’s left to do is leave behind their house keys―to a stranger.

For Anna, Georgia and Tom’s house in the cool woodlands is a dream break from the oppressive heat of a New York City summer―and from an increasingly ill-fated relationship with her lover. A month apart and Anna can clear her head and reassess her future. She’s found the perfect place to do it.

As the weeks wear on, Georgia and Anna discover that the pleasures of escape are as difficult to trust in as the comforts of home. And neither one can shake the feeling that something is about to go terribly wrong.

I was intrigued by this book from the start, but by the time opinion was halfway thru - you had to pry my kindle out of my hands to get me to stop!! This book was a fun, exciting read. Books that feature painfully human characters are so delightful to read, and this one delivers!

For the first half of the book, I was completely drawn in by the writing. All the character development and details, exquisite. These days, many authors seem to just throw words in to up the word count and turn it from a short story into a novel. Not here. There is no "had had" with everything in the past in the wrong tense just to eek out a few more words. There are no details tossed in that seem unimportant. Every little side note feels like a real glimpse into the character's personality instead of extraneous detail. The vocabulary and flow are great. I gobbled it all up. The writing is good.

And then ... *BOOM*. I was reading a Spanish soap opera. The plot twists were so many and so fast and so absurd and tawdry and so contrary to all the development of the characters to that point that I suddenly hated all these people I had been drawn into caring about and felt hoodwinked by the author. Even the writing lost its fluidity at that point. All in a few pages, this carefully constructed path to what looked like a believable and intricate story dissolved into a dime store plot of childish vengeance and impossible stupidity on the part of previously brilliant characters.

The true shame of it is not that I didn't care for the book. It's that someone who can write this well would waste it with cheap theatrics instead of seeing what she had written to that point and giving herself credit for where it could go.

I overall liked this book so I decided to give it 4 stars. It probably more like 3 1/2. The story is interesting and kept me reading. It was slow at the beginning and then everything started happening really fast. There were too many twist and it made the story feel impossible. All of the characters, including Millie, seem very psychologically messed up. The story might have been better some of the characters seemed normal. I guess it would be a good Lifetime movie.

This book was Amazing. The characters were fleshed out and well written, the story told from the opposing viewpoints of the main characters. Every time I thought I knew where the story line was going, a new plot twist popped up. It kept me on the edge of my seat, right up until the last page. It was a very satisfying ending, and the Epilogue tied everything together. I highly recommend this book, and will probably try others by this author.

I'm sort of torn. It was a good book and kept my interest pretty good but also seemed drug out. I wasn't crazy about any of the characters and Millie acted like a 4 yr old until the very end, her parents also treated her like she was 4. They just all fell flat for me in personality. I gave it 4 stars because it was a good plot and written good.

The audiobook was ok. The narrator was good but I didn't like the characters' voices. I think because it sounded just like the characters would in real life.

A novel about the frightening damages of love, family, and obsession by the bestselling author of Open House andA We Were Mothers.

As the weeks wear on, Georgia and Anna discover that the pleasures of escape are as difficult to trust in as the comforts of home. And neither one can shake the feeling that something is about to go terribly wrong.

My Thoughts:

When Anna searches for a Vacation Rental for the summer, she discovers more than she had anticipated. And when Georgia gives up her family home for the month of August, she is hoping to invigorate her family life.

But something else begins to happen to each of them as they make these changes. Slowly and unexpectedly, their lives are changed in horrific ways.

A delightful tale that kept me turning the pages. 5 stars.

I LOVED this book! 5 starts only because I couldn't give it more. The plot twists were unpredictable, which was awesome because you couldn't see where the story was going until it hit you. Was very well written, detailed where it needed to be but not too much to spoil the story. My first Katie Sise book, but absolutely will not the the last. I'm excited talking about this book to others, and its on my recommendation/book gift list.
