Product Description
Product Description
Work In the Front. All Comfort in the Back.
The M21 G10 series offers up unsurpassed cutting power featuring deep-bellied spear point blades in the front, and lightweight, insulating, tough G10 handles in the back. In the middle is you, happy, and ready to take on tasks.
Retired Sgt. Major and legendary custom knifemaker Kit Carson of Vine Grove, KY designed the M21 series. His knives have been a long-time staple of military forces worldwide and Kit wanted to create a premium knife that was everything you could ask for in a high quality work blade, but at a great price. He succeeded with a heavy-duty knife series that’s tough enough for whatever life throws your way.
Made of high carbon stainless steel blades this deep-bellied spear point-style is swedged and recurved. It’s like having a bulldozer with laser-like cutting precision. A non-reflective black titanium nitride finish offers maximum corrosion resistance. So they can still look good even after the messiest of jobs. We’re sure you’ve done a few of those.
The M21 G10’s feature the innovative and super strong automated liner safety. Automated liner safety is the locking liner safety innovation taken to the next level. The automated liner safety sets a pin between the locking liner and the frame. This pin acts as an additional layer of safety, so the locking liner is less likely to disengage during use.
To close the knife, pull the red buttoned safety lever back, slide the locking liner over, and fold the blade into the closed position. Want one of the most secure safety systems on the market? The choice is automatic.
The handle of the M21-04G is built as tough as the blade but that doesn’t mean we sacrificed comfort with it. An InterFrame build with stainless steel liners makes this baby virtually indestructible. Meanwhile the G10 scales give you lightweight, unparalleled, all weather grip. The handles also keep your hands cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s the best of all worlds in whatever corner of the planet you use it.
So grab hold of the M21 G10. When it comes to your list of favorite features, it checks them off, with authority.

The locking mechanism is superb. The liner lock gets pinned into the locked position until manually released. I feel I can use the knife and never fear that it will accidentally close on me. It also stays completely closed when folded. The blade was wickedly sharp out of the box, and easy to maintain in that condition, so it is comforting to know it is almost as as solidly safe as a non-folder when opened.
Closing it is neither difficult nor slow after a little practice. It does take two hands and you need to pay a little bit of attention to what you are doing. That's fine. I will gladly take a little trouble in closing it in return for a speedy and fully safe deployment.
Opening is literally a snap! Start the blade moving out of the handle using the Carson Flipper lever portion of the blade (and usually the index finger) and give it a flick of the wrist. It is opened and locked! Again, with a little practice, this can be done with either hand and has never failed to open the knife fully in the locked conformation. The thumb stud is ambidextrous, and for me a nice alternative and backup option. In contrast to another reviewer, I found the blade can started on its way to opening using the thumb stud and thumb from a fully-closed position. Then give it the flick. Lots of options for opening, and I can use any of them.
The red button AUTO form of the Autolawks safety can be mechanically disengaged by following the helpful instructions posted by another reviewer. While I agree that this is still a good knife when so modified, to me it then also becomes a knife that is like many others if I then can' t manage to manually lock the liner and blade. The knife I wanted -and found- here is special because opens in a flash, and AUTOMATICALLY locks solidly open, and yet closes with no trouble to practiced hands. The time spent in modification IMHO would be better spent practicing opening and closing the knife; but to each his own. If you are happier with a manual lock on the liner, by all means modify the knife. But think about it first, especially if you want to employ the other modification which will make the liner lock more accessible (and more exposed).
This knife can serve many functions:
-as a tool for the first responder (bravo for one-handed opening and locking)
-as a woods or hunting knife, or when boating or canoeing
-for police, military, or fire work
-for self-defense
-for EDC
-as a general-purpose folder in a bug-out bag
Personally, I like the combo edge because the serrated portion is sufficiently long for cutting thick rope, webbing, or fabric. But a fine edge will work as well if it is given a final few strokes cross a coarser stone to slightly rough up the edge. This will give it some "bite".
While it was smooth operating out of the box, it helped a bit to break it in by practicing opening and closing. After a hundred or so cycles of opening and closing, it was ready for re-lubrication with a light synthetic oil (Rem-Oil is one good choice). It helps to let a little oil flow through the pivot as the blade is worked, to flush out any debris (or rinse under hot running water). The finish holds up on the blade, but prudence suggests wiping regularly with a touch of oil or leaving a light coat of a buffed wax.
What else? It is usefully large at five inched closed, with a practical three inches of blade. Enough to do the job out of pocket or pouch and not raise eyebrows. In fact, enough for dressing a deer. Also legal in most (but not all!) places. The steel is a decent type and quite good for the price of the knife. Blade thickness and conformation are good, and the point is there but not too overwhelming. (In some pictures, the serrated portion fades out and makes it look like some sort of gut hook, which it isn't.). The scales are just right, neither slippery nor clinging. It might be textured to the point of being a little rough on the skin, but you won't need to worry about losing your grip with wet, oily, or sweating hands.
One of my sons will soon be trying his hand at career in firefighting, and he'll be getting this knife as a present. Can I say more? He will have several knives, but this will be the likely workhorse. After years of being a first responder myself, and in law enforcement as well as field biology, I have learned you can't judge a knife by the price tag alone. This knife is a bargain, and priced well-below its value as a working knife, as a knife for all seasons and many reasons. Just buy it: you will be pleased. Well-done CRKT!
First off, out of the box, it came razor sharp. It went through paper like it was hot butter when I was using nothing more than the knife's own weight. Now, that might not be saying much either, since this knife also feels beefy. And not really a bad thing either, I love it. It feels heavier than it actually is in your hand, it gives me a greater sense of security. Almost as if every ounce of this knife is a constant reminder on how this solid piece of steel will not ever break or fail on me.
Now while we're on the topic of security, let's talk about the Auto-lawks system. Keep in mind, I'm a fairly new knife guy. That's not to say that I haven't held my share of knives in my lifetime, nor is it to say that I don't know a thing or two about them either. I do know that I do not mind the Auto Lawks one bit. I know I've seen my share of people complaining about them,
1) how it's completely unnecessary,
2) how much of a hassle it is to disengage everytime, and
3) how it's really difficult to close the blade with one hand.
Now to share my opinion on each one of these complaints...
1) Yes. I agree that if you use this knife like you should use any knife, then the Auto Lawks is really unnecessary as the liner lock should never fail on you under ANY normal circumstances. However. At this point in your life, however old you may be, you should have already come to the realization that things do, in fact, happen. No matter how unexpected it might be, there is still a chance that you may be presented a situation in which your almighty liner lock WOULD fail. It would be unexpected and unintentional, but that's why it's called an accident.
With that said; I, for one, welcome the idea of the Auto Lawks. It grants you that extra peace of mind that you can have your blade secured in the open position, and NOT have any possibility of it ever closing on you. This is a fixed blade knife... That folds. What's not to love about it?
2) Considering the safety advantages I had just pointed out in the previous complaint, I would say that the Auto Lawks is NOT a hassle at all. It literally adds just a micro second for you to close your blade, as opposed to just closing it using the liner lock. Literally. ONE extra step that takes a micro second should NOT make any difference to you. The only reason I can imagine that speed should be a factor is if you're ever put in a life threatening situation and it would be more tactical to open your blade faster... Notice how it would only work for opening it..? This knife opens just as quick as any non-assisted folding knives, probably even faster than most (seriously, this thing is butter smooth). If you're having to close the blade already, however, I just do not see how you can be in that much of a hurry to do so.
3) No. This knife really does not require two hands to operate. You must have really poor dexterity to not be able to close it with one hand. I mean, I understand if you've owned and used dozens of regular liner lock knives before, so you're just so used to the motion of not having to deal with an Auto Lawks... But c'mon, be honest. It took me maybe an hour max to get used to having to deal with the Auto Lawks with one hand.. It is do-able.
Also, a very huge plus for me is the blade shape. The spear point with a slight recurve and belly just looks so amazingly cool to me. It makes it look bigger and beefier than it actually is. Not to mention the belly also gives you more cutting edge to work with.
Now that we've pretty much covered the reasons why I think this knife is awesome... Let's get to the main reason why I rated this product 1 star less than it should be:
First off, the biggest and main reason I took a star off is the blade centering on this thing when it's closed. Now when it's open, this thing is as sturdy as a fixed blade. Absolutely ZERO blade play. Side to side, or up and down, this blade does not give way at all... BUT, when it's closed I got really disappointed to find out that the blade leans to the side due to the strength of the liner pushing it there. Now normally I wouldn't really mind if it's not centered... I'm really not one of those collectors that need their blades completely centered so they look pretty and uniformed...
HOWEVER, the liner is pushing the blade to the side so much so that it actually left a tiny nick on the bottom left side of the logo on the blade. The liner actually has the blade making contact with the inside of the handle right where the grind starts, and after two weeks, it left a noticeable nick on the black titanium nitride finish. Now it's TINY, and it really shouldn't matter too much because it's not even noticeable until I point it out. However, I am quite a perfectionist, especially when it comes to things I collect. So every tiny unnecessary blemish on my items just come as a huge disappointment for me.
Also, while I'm criticizing the strength of the liner, I might add that it did take some getting used to as well. The scales only have a small indentation to grant access to the liner, which made it difficult to completely push aside at first. All I have to say is that if you do not have a callus on the tip of your thumb right now, expect it if you're going to use this knife as an EDC.
All in all, the beefy liner is the only thing that took a star off this otherwise perfect product. I would still highly recommend this to any of my friends and family. And if I lose this one, I might even still pick up two to replace it. Just in case.
UPDATE: After a couple weeks, I actually got used to the liner lock already and it's to the point where it's not even an issue. I love this completely now.
I highly recommend this BIG DOG FLIPPER! 💯
