Great fixed blade knife

Great fixed blade knife
I wanted a solid military-style knife for a great price. I’ll be using this in a farm/ranch setting.Good gripping handle and a thick blade, think of military issue knives from the 40’s till the 80’s.

Get this, if you want a stainless version it comes in san mai (cold steel's sandwiched stainless), and 3v both which will cost you 2 to 3 times the price. This is perfect for my needs, price is awesome, knife is awesome. I'm very happy

I have more expensive outdoor knives that I use more often (mainly a Fallkniven F1 and Casstrom No10 Forest knife), but was always curious about the Cold Steel SRK. I got a big gift card from work and for $40, I just couldn't pass this knife up since I've heard so many good things about it. I'll list the good and the bad below:

Good:
* The handle is very comfy and secure in the hand. When working for long periods of time, the SRK didn't create any hotspots, unlike my Fallkniven F1
* The steel: This is my first knife in SK5 and I'm impressed. I did a lot of cross-grain batoning and notch-making on a recent 3-day camping trip and I did not see any bends, chips, or other edge-deformation. Granted, where I live, we don't typically have many hardwood trees. This was done primarily on Douglas Fir and Big Leaf Maple wood. I had a good working edge even on the last day of the trip and the knife still shaved. Edge is easy to touch-up as well without needing fancy diamond stones.
* The blade: This SRK has a very very slight hollow grind. It is just barely noticeable. Before I got the knife in my hand, I was a bit worried that it would be too thin behind the edge and be weak. That is not the case. The hollow grind hasn't affected the performance of the knife at all. The tip of the knife is acute and pointy, but not too thin. I still wouldn't go around using it as a prybar though. Sharpness was great right out of the box, but a few passes on a fine stone followed by a strop really made it pop.

Neutral:
* The sheath is okay. If you pull the knife in and out of the sheath 100 times it will slightly dull the blade, but you'll still have a working edge. Check out Cedric & Ada's Youtube video about this. The retention and ability to lash the sheath into different positions is a plus. Honestly though, it's a better sheath than what you'll find on all other knives in this price range, and even better than some on more expensive knives.

Cons:
* Not really a con, but the blade comes packed in oil. I understand they do this to prevent rust during storage and shipping, but it's just a slight inconvenience to clean it out of the sheath.
* It's a fantastic all-around knife, but it's not the best knife for any one job. Not big enough to be a chopper (although it'll handle de-limbing small branches just fine), and too big to be a handy bushcrafty knife or good whittler. I knew that would be the case when I bought it though.

I have a lot f knives. A lot. For some reason, I just now got around to picking up a Cold Steel SRK. I LOVE THIS KNIFE. Best knife available at this price point as far as I'm concerned. Feels great in the hand with the rubbery grip which is also very comfortable in the hand, has a nice thick 6" blade, and feels light enough to handle really well and not pull your pants down due to weight, and yet is very solid and sturdy feeling enough that it can take anything you can dish out. I can see that we will have a great future together and is now my favorite for camping and everyday use. And that's saying something since there are many Ka-Bar, OKC, Buck, and others of which most were more money waiting on deck. It's a great looking knife but it's not so pretty that you are afraid to use it because you'll mess it up, and has a very utilitarian look and feel. Which means you'll actually use the heck out of it. Hopefully it will live up to expectations and I wish I would have pulled the trigger on this one long ago. It's perfect.

This knife is great! Feels solid in the hands, sheath works great, and it's pretty sharp out the box. Doesn't have the best grind I've ever seen but it'll cut that's for sure! My only minor gripe is how tight the knife fits in the sheath. I'll probably do some minor sanding to loosen it up a bit. It's hard to compare this knife to my others. Most of my knifes are pocket folders or moras. Compared to the morakniv garberg, I'd say this knife fits my needs better. I like the size better, I like the handle a bit more, and I much prefer this sheath. The moras sheath covers the handle halfway and is a bit too in the way. Overall, I love it!

"Wow" was what I actually said when I opened the package and held it in my hand. It's not large, but feels solid and substantial—good weight will help in many working situations too. I haven't used it for any serious work yet, but I feel that I can safely rely on this knife. The simple handle is also very comfortable and easy to hold and use, the texture feels great too, probably good at preventing slippage.
