I really like this pour over! And in the past six months that I’ve owned it, I’ve had almost no issues. However, the seller I purchased it from, BRAND SKILLFUL LIMITED, is very suspicious. They reached out to me asking for information that I had clearly provided to Amazon, and seemed to be probing me for personal info. Luckily, I didn’t engage with them and reported it to Amazon.
So be careful who the seller is.
But overall, I love this coffee maker! It does exactly what I need it to, and with milliliter/gram accuracy. The only thing I’ve noticed is, and only sometimes, the rotating head will make a louder noise as it cycles. I’m only using reverse osmosis water in the machine so I know that there isn’t any scale buildup. The noise will normally be there as it’s pumping for at most two cycles, and then the noise will disappear. Kind of sounds like it could be a pump issue or a bearing issue, but all in all it doesn’t affect the functionality of the machine, just maybe something that I’ll have to keep an eye on. Beyond that the build quality is amazing!
It produces a different style of coffee than a traditional pour over, don’t get confused. Yes it is a pour over, however that is a fairly broad term that could be applied to basically all standard coffee makers as well as they pour water over the coffee. While you use a courser grind for a traditional pour over, i’ve been finding that most coffees are happiest between 20 and 30 on the built in grinder. I’ve started using the grinder for manual pour covers as well, and typically I’ll grind coffees between 30 and 40 doing a traditional pour over. Of course, this is actually a very fine grinder, very little retention, and each notch is a fine adjustment. Between Settings 20 and 30, there’s very little variation in the grind size, so you are able to hone in your coffee very precisely. That’s definitely a positive! However I do recommend grinding coffee a little bit finer than you would for a traditional pour over. The machine guides you to start with 25, and that’s generally a good base to begin with. If you assess the grinds in your hand, you’ll likely think that it’s too fine, but it works for the machine.
All in all, I would recommend! I haven’t tried Chemex’s automated pour over machine, and there are a few Japanese ones out there. Can’t compare cause I haven’t tried those, but I do think that the rotation of the head is a better method than a showerhead like the Chemex. If this one broke tomorrow, I would likely replace it with the same.
